Great Britain 1979, the two biggest bands on the skinhead scene were given an ultimatum by the uni kid run, music media mafia : “denounce your skinhead following or face a black list and be cast into the rock wilderness.”
Jimmy Pursey the limped wristed singer of Sham 69, known for arriving at his concerts in baseball boots and American college boy attire (Roi Pearce anyone? ) before changing into DMs and braces for his performance, turned his back on the struggles of the white working class, bottled out and joined the media darlings of Rock Againgst Racism: immediately feeling the wrath of skinheads all over Great Britain, his band was literally battered off the stage wherever they showed their faces.
In September of 79 after playing 5 songs and coming out with a few dodgy comments at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, the massed ranks of skinheads smashed the band to pieces along with any lefty in attendance, Sham called it their “last stand” and called it a day.
In the same month Skrewdriver led by Ian Stuart, took the stage at the 100 Club on Oxford Street dressed all in black with red braces, real skinheads playing to their own. The venue was packed to the rafters with skinhead firms from every section of London.
Ian Stuart gave an opening speech telling the music press, politicians and police who were all trying to bring Skrewdriver into line to “go fuck yourselves, we stay true to those who support us and always will”, the band then launched into their song “White Power”, the skinheads went mental and a legend was born.
Ian Stuart was killed in very mysterious circumstances in 1993, which as time passes and more information is released, increasingly looks like he was taken out by the State, in an attempt to silence the greatest skinhead band the scene has ever witnessed. They failed.
This is the story of how a skinhead legend unfolded.
