The garden gazebo with its home-made trellis panels and posts is now about to take shape and provide us with an elegant outside dining area, far from the madding poultry. There is a blog post to accompany this film with more details and photos: http://thegreenlever.blogspot.fr/2015/09/diy-garden-gazebo-from-pallet-wood-part.html#.VgQ77OSli1E

This was a project for a friend who had an existing UPVC set of drive gates that she wanted replacing. As she lives on the beach, these needed to be of robust build and also with solid fixtures and fittings to withstand both the Westerlies from across the Atlantic and the heavy salt spray in the Winter. As the drive itself was uneven and the existing granite posts and hinges old but serviceable, I also intended to fit a set of support wheels to the gates in order to both facilitate opening and to prevent sagging. 'J' Rocket stove made from steel pipe scrap and recuperated steel bar with additional decorative touch to turn it into a rooster. Makes coffee in 8 minutes by burning general garden prunings or the sort of twigs you could find on a walk. The 'J' configuration means the stove self-feeds, giving you time to relax. Fun project and working prototype for space-heating a tiny house - which will be one of our future projects. My cousins found this beautiful vintage chandelier in a dumpster/skip in Manhattan and carried it all the way over to us in rural France. I've only ever seen one other similar light fitting - it was on line, on Etsy, where it was described as 'French Farmhouse Style', so it looks like this particular rooster has come home to his native roost. If you are going away for a few days, your chickens can be kept safely enclosed in this split level coop. Your friends or neighbours can feed and water them and even close them up at night without the risk of them escaping. For everyday use it forms a home base for free-range poultry. It also makes a secure area for brooding chicks. Written article https://thegreenlever.blogspot.com/2019/03/diy-pallet-wood-week-end-chicken-coop.html#.XIJ7eblG2kA

This is a very interesting alternative energy project in that although it is used to heat an individual dwelling, in this case a farmhouse, it actually lies at the heart of what future energy conversion may be all about. There is an ever growing sense that energy and food production needs to be based around small communities. Written article: https://thegreenlever.blogspot.com/2014/03/heat-from-hedges-wood-chip-boiler.html#.VDQ7WNZDt0w The fields surrounding the farm are divided with hedges of deciduous wood. The hedges are trimmed every 15 years and the wood is used for fuel. This cycle has been going on for centuries, maintaining the hedgerows being an essential part of the farm calendar. Traditionally, the bigger branches were cut or split into logs for the fire and the thinner twigs would be collected, tied into bundles (faggots) which could be used in the bread oven. After WW2 many bread ovens fell into disuse, resulting in most farmers/landowners burning these smaller twigs in the fields where they were cut. This amounts to about one third of the total amount of combustible material being wasted. The solution Michael and Lydie have adopted is to heat their large farm house using a wood chip boiler, the chips are produced from ALL of the hedge trimmings. Ironically over the last decade with the return in France to traditional artisan bread-making coupled with the restoration of bread ovens, faggots have become in high demand but thankfully there is enough coppiced wood to go around!

Detailed step-by-step - How to make a viable spin dryer from a broken washing machine, a discarded bicycle and a pallet. We can achieve a spin cycle of between 320 and 400 rpm, which gives us 'non-drip' laundry, something we could never achieve with our bicycle washing machine. This is a two part film with accompanying written and photographic details. I'll take you through the designs, problems, tools, fixes and assembly step-by-step. All you'll need is an old washing machine, a 'dead' bicycle and a wooden pallet. Our first pedal powered machine was just our own which we converted when the electronics failed beyond repair.
