Under the starry night sky on the feast of the Transfiguration, just two weeks before his repose, Fr. Seraphim spoke these words to those who loved him:

“‘Beholding the majesty of God’s creation, we catch a glimpse, however vague and shadowy, of the beauty of God’s eternal Kingdom, for which we were all created. We must always remember that our home is in the heavens; we must shake off all the vain and petty passions and worries that keep us tied to the ground, to the fallen earthly world, that keep us from realizing the purpose of our creation. How easily we forget the very reason for our existence.... The end times are already here; we see clearly the preparation of the world for the Antichrist. Christians will be faced with an unprecedented trial of their faith and love for God. We will have to hide in the wilderness — in land like we see before us here. Of course, in the end they will find us even there. The purpose of hiding is not just for the preservation of our earthly life, but to gain time to strengthen our souls for the final trial. And this must begin even now. Let us therefore at least begin to struggle against the fetters of petty passions, and remember that our true home is not here, but in the heavens. Let us “strive towards our heavenly homeland,” as St. Herman used to say... Ad astera! Ad astera!’
“He finished and continued staring into the heavenly blue of the starry grandeur, oblivious of us who beheld before us a glimpse of the mystery of a man who, having long since prepared his soul, would be going there soon.”

Ad Astera is Latin for “To the stars”

The great preacher, St. John Chrysostom, admonishes parents in the ways to raise children not to merely become good citizens on the empire, but to be Saints, bringing honor to their parents both in this life and in the life to come.

“This is how to discipline and teach your child; this is the greatest of riches. Do not worry about giving him an influential reputation for worldly wisdom, but ponder deeply how you can teach him to think lightly of this lifes passing glories; thus he will become truly renowned and glorious. Whether you are poor or rich, you can do this; these lessons are not learned from a skillful professor but from divine revelation.”

“It is necessary for everyone to know Scriptural teachings, and this is especially true for children. Not knowing divine truths, they do know something of the pagan stories, learning from them about wondrous lives, about heroes in their sight, who served the passions and were afraid of death.”

Speaking of Hannah and her son Samuel: “She did not know if she would ever have another, yet she never said, I will wait until he grows up; he should have a taste of worldly pleasures, during his childhood at least. No; she rejected all these thoughts, for she had only one object: how from the very beginning she could dedicate her hearts delight to God. Be ashamed, you men, at the wisdom of this woman. She gave Samuel to God, and with God she left him, and thus her marriage was blessed more than ever, because her first concern was for spiritual things.”

“Do you think that Christ our God, the ocean of compassion and mercy, is incapable of lifting the weight of one sinful soul? What is a handful of sand when thrown in the ocean? It is nothing; it disappears. Does even a single grain remain visible on the surface of the water? Not at all. This is precisely what happens with all the sins of humanity. They are nothing in comparison to the abyss of God’s compassion. This is even more true with the sins of only one soul!” -Elder Ephraim

In this beautiful homily given toward the end of Lent (it appears), Elder Ephraim of Arizona encourages us to trust in the great mercy of the divine Bridegroom and shed tears of repentance that we might receive His forgiveness. May we all, by the prayers of Elder Ephraim, have a blessed Holy Week and a bright Pascha.

“Just as the Person of Christ the God-man is one and unique, so is the Church founded by Him, in Him, and upon Him…. The principal Tradition, the transcendent Tradition, of the Orthodox Church is the living God-man Christ, entire in the theanthropic Body of the Church of which He is the immortal, eternal Head. This is not merely the message, but the transcendent message of the holy apostles and the holy fathers.”

St. Justin Popović (+1979), the great twentieth century theologian of Serbia, masterfully expounds upon the truth that Christ, comprised of both Head and Body, is His Church, the Body of Christ, and specifically those four attributes the Holy Fathers of the Second Ecumenical Council handed down to us: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

The meaning of Theanthropic: divine (in Greek theos = God) and human (in Greek anthropos = man); the Theanthropos = the God-Man, i.e. Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

Troparion to St. Justin: “Let us honor with splendor the divinely inspired theologian, the wise Serb Justin, who by the scythe of the Holy Spirit hath thrashed the error of atheism and the insolence of the Latins, being a mystic of the God-man and lover of piety, crying out: Glory to Christ Who hath glorified thee, glory to Him Who hath crowned thee, glory to Him Who hath rendered thee a luminary to those who are in a state of darkness.”

According to St. Symeon, one must be distinctly aware of God’s presence in Holy Communion in order to truly participate in the Grace of the Mystery. Otherwise, “the fire warms you without touching you; the life overshadowed you but was not united with you.” This recording is presented here for the edification of Orthodox Christians and Catechumens. Prepare your soul to be united with your Lord, receiving him consciously and joyfully, with holy fear and trembling, unto the healing of soul and body and the celebration of the eternal Pascha, Who is Christ Jesus.

This recording is from the final section of Discourse 14 by St. Symeon the New Theologian, published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press. Purchase here: https://svspress.com/on-the-mystical-life-the-ethical-discourses-st-symeon-the-new-theologian-volume-i-the-church-and-the-last-things/

St. Symeon the New Theologian (+1022) is one of three saints of the Orthodox church to have been given the title of Theologian. Born in Galatia and educated at Constantinople, he became abbot of the monastery of St. Mamas and is known as one the most authoritative and charismatic (not Pentecostal) Saints of the Church. His feast day is March 12/25, or Oct 12/25 as his feast day often falls within Great Lent.

The text of this recording in full:

“Beloved, please do not make an uproar on hearing the truth made plain to you. For if you confess that the flesh of the Lord is bread which gives life to the world, and if you know His blood also gives life to those who partake of it, that it becomes in him who drinks it as a spring welling up into everlasting life, then how, tell me, do you in partaking of these not sense anything more added to your soul? Though you may probably feel a certain small joy, after a little while you are the same as you were before and feel in yourself no increase of life, or gushing spring, or see any light whatever. Because, while this looks like any fragment of bread to those who have not gone beyond the perception of their senses, yet, to the intellect, it is light uncontainable and unapproachable. So, too, is the wine in like manner light, life, fire, and living water. If therefore, on eating and drinking the bread and wine of gladness, you do not become aware that you live with an indestructible life, that the bread is in the form of light, or that you have received it like the prophet before as a burning coal within you, that you have drink the Master’s blood as water which wells up and speaks within you, if you have in no way arrived at the contemplation of and participation in these things, how do you fancy that you have become a communicant of the life? How can you think that you have touched the unapproachable fire; or how do you suppose that you partake of eternal light? In no way at all has this happened to you, you who have no perception of these matters! Instead, the light shines on you who are blind; the fire warms you without touching you; the life overshadowed you but was not united with you; the living water passed through your soul like [ordinary] water through a pipe because it did not find in you a worthy receptacle. Therefore, while you are thus receiving and thus touching the untouchable and thinking that you eat, you remain without receiving, without eating, without having anything at all within yourself. For the unapproachable Word, the bread which comes down from heaven, is not held by the senses. Instead, it is He Himself Who comprehends and touches, and Who is united without confusion to all who are worthy and well prepared for His reception.
If, then, you celebrate the feast and so partake as well of the divine mysteries, all your life with be to you one single feast. And not a feast, but the beginning of a feast and a single Pascha, the passage and emigration from what is seen to what is sensed by the intellect, to that place where every shadow and type, and all the present symbols, come to an end, and where we who are pure shall in purity rejoice eternally in the most pure sacrifice, in God the Father and the co-essential Spirit, always seeing Christ and seen by Him, ever being with Christ, reigning with Christ, than Whom nothing is greater in the Kingdom of God, and to Whom is due all glory, honor, and worship, together with the Father and His all-Holy and life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages without end. Amen.”

“The statements of Metropolitan Joseph, it is true, are extremely outspoken, absolutely uncompromising in principle, and unsparing of persons. But those who find ‘pride’ in such words are perhaps simply unaware of the critical urgency of the issues involved. When the Church is being betrayed and the faithful led astray, it is no time for compliments and polite ‘dialogues,’ not for placing ‘sympathy’ above truth.”

The bold confessor and shepherd of the Russian land, St. Joseph of Petrograd, is a witness for all who wish to live Godly in the face of persecution and secularism. His voice gave strength to many Russian Orthodox Christians who could not abide by the Soviet demands, and who opposed Metropolitan Sergius, his lamentable ‘Declaration’ in 1927, and his submission to the Soviet yoke. Metropolitan Joseph, along with a great number of Russian martyrs, was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in 1981.

Memorable words from the end of this text: “The prophecy of the holy and clairvoyant Elder Ignaty of Harbin, made some 30 years ago, no longer seems remote: ‘What began in Russia, will end in America.’ But if such terrible days be truly upon us, even Orthodox America – so weak, so inexperienced, so naïve – has all that is necessary to face these days in the example of Metropolitan Joseph and the True Orthodox Christians of the first land to experience the fearful yoke of satanic atheism. Holy New Hieromartyr Joseph and all the new martyrs of the Communist Yoke, pray to God for us!”

This recording comes from chapter 7 in “Russia’s Catacomb Saints” by I. M. Andreyev, published by St. Herman of Alaska Press in 1982. Fr. In notes found after his repose, Hieromonk Seraphim of Platina examines the philosophy of the Holy Fathers on science, evolution, secular knowledge, and theology. As he always does, he draws on various Fathers, including St. Gregory Palamas, St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, and the disciple of the Optina Elders, Ivan Kireyevsky, while referring to St. Basil the Great and other towering Saints. His perception is nearly unmatched as he shares many key principles that not only apply to Genesis and evolution, but also to our modern world that has transhumanism and bio-tech on the tip of many tongues. This is an antidote for those longing for truth in this age of apostasy.

“Modern science thinks it is “knowledge” par excellence, and before its prestige Orthodox believers waver, often apologizing for believing what seems “unscientific,“ remaining content with the pietism or “religious feeling” which is the place where the scientific establishment allows faith today.
But true Orthodox Christianity is quite different. It is not bound up with any current or modern thought; it is a knowledge superior to science, and it certainly need not apologize to a lower form of knowledge.” – Fr. Seraphim Rose

“‘The Fathers said nothing about evolution’—this is used by many Orthodox as an excuse for actually believing whatever one wants or whatever “science” says on the subject. But our attitude to the Fathers must be more serious and more profound than this. Being faithful to the Fathers does not mean merely being ready to quote them or feel “free” to think as one pleases if no quotes are available. Rather, it means entering into their thought, which is the thought of the Church of Christ, and having a coherent philosophy of life derived from our life in the Church in harmony with the thought of the Fathers.” –Fr. Seraphim Rose

St. Justin Popović gives the quintessential teaching on the Saints and the meaning of their Lives for us today. He writes, "The Lives of the Saints are in fact the life of the Godman Christ, which is poured out into His followers and is experienced by them in His Church." Everything good and holy in the Saints finds its beginning, middle, and end in Christ. St. Justin also points out that the Lives of the Saints are "applied dogmatics" and are nothing less than the continuation of the Acts of the Apostles. And at a basic, pastoral level, "If you are suffering for your faith in Christ, the Lives of the Saints will console you and encourage you and make you bold and give you wings, and your torments will be changed into joy."

Holy Father Justin, pray to God for us!

St. Justin Popović teaches us the centrality of Christ in Orthodoxy, apart from whom Orthodoxy does not exist. All other religions are based on man, but only Orthodoxy is based on the God-man. St. Justin writes, “Orthodoxy is Orthodoxy by reason of the God-man, and not by reason of anything else or anyone else. Hence another name for Orthodoxy is God-manhood. In it nothing exists through man or by man, but everything comes from the God-man and exists through the God-man. This means that man experiences and finds out about the fundamental eternal truth of life and the world only with the help of the God-man, in the God-man. And it means something else: man learns the complete truth about man, about the purpose and meaning of his existence only through the God-man. Outside of Him a man turns into an apparition, into a scarecrow, into nonsense. Instead of a man you find the dregs of a man, the fragments of a man, the scraps of a man. Therefore, true manhood lies only in God-manhood; and no other manhood exists under heaven.”

O holy Father Justin, pray to God for us!

A bold response to the Bolshevik tyranny in 1918 by St. Hermogenes, Bishop of Tobolsk. This excerpt comes from a leaflet he wrote and blessed for distribution to the Russian Orthodox faithful, exhorting them to stand firm in the Faith, free from fear, not letting anything compromise the Faith of Christ that their Fathers had passed down to them.

Let us in the 21st century take his witness and apply it with patient and loving discernment to our own days. May we overcome our own passions by God’s grace and be obedient, as St. Hermogenes was, in the face of evil.

Read the story of his life, including the full leaflet, here: https://www.orthodox.net/russiannm/hermogenes-bishop-and-hieromartyr-of-tobolsk-and-those-with-him.html

"Brother Christians! Raise your voices in defense of the Church's Apostolic Faith, the holy things of the Church, the Church's heritage. Defend your right to believe and confess your faith as you learned it in days of old, as you were taught it by the holy apostles, the holy martyrs, the God-wise fathers of the Church, the Christian ascetics. Take care of the holiness of your souls, the freedom of your consciences. Say loudly that you have been accustomed to pray and save yourselves in the churches, that the holy things of the Church are dearer to you than life itself, that without them salvation is impossible. No power can demand from you that which is against your faith, your religious conscience: 'We must obey God rather than men', said the holy apostles. That is what we, too, must say. The apostles joyfully suffered for the faith. Be you also ready for sacrifice, for podvig, and remember that physical arms are powerless against those who arm themselves with powerful faith in Christ. Faith moves mountains, 'the faith of the Christians has conquered the pagan boldness'. May your faith be bold and courageous! Christ destroyed hades. He will also destroy the snares of the enemies of our Church. Believe - and the enemy will flee from before your face. Stand in defense of your faith and with firm hope say: 'Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered!'"

In this talk, Fr. Seraphim gives insight and advice especially helpful for Orthodox Christians in America. He briefly shares the history of Orthodoxy in the US, examines the present state of the Church, and gives advice on how we can live out our Orthodox Faith. Being a convert himself, he knows the common pitfalls that new Orthodox believers fall into and how to avoid them. Any inquirer, catechumen, or baptized Orthodox Christian will gain much help from this talk.

Fr. Seraphim says in this lecture: "St. Tikhon, therefore, gives us a start in understanding what Orthodoxy is: it is something first of all of the HEART, not just the mind, something LIVING AND WARM, not abstract and cold, some thing that is learned and practiced in LIFE, not just in school."

Fr. Seraphim gave this talk at the Saint Herman Winter Pilgrimage, December 12/25, 1979, at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, New York.

First published by the St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood of Platina, CA in The Orthodox Word, vol. 16, no. 5 (94), Sept.-Oct., 1980, pp. 211-236.
