Night means no cloud shadows :wigglyomg: Don’t take a close look at the thumbnail’s background.

How many gahps are there? Some were short and easy, some were long and very difficult. Some are filled perfectly, some to the best of my abilities but not very well. If only there weren’t so many factors: The sky, cloud shadows behind Fang, one of three eye emotions, Rosie, cloud shadows behind Rosie, three different positions of her head and slow transitions between them and of course unimportant extras walking through the scene. This song will probably haunt my dreams now.

Filling the gaps could not be done very nicely this time as there were no similar instances from where I could have taken the background and especially since the background overlaps with Rosie in the first gap. I thought it was terrible, but apparently Amarizo didn’t notice the gaps this time either. He should have put his glasses on.

It might not look like it but editing this took quite some time. I put a high quality rip of the original song into the editing programme to align the footage to it and the low quality ingame song was not hearable anymore, the high quality version and the singing voice however were. That eventually gave me the idea to just leave it like this as it sounds much better.

Amarizo recorded this with the Switch’s recording feature, meaning it consists of multiple 30-second clips. Unfortunately, the Switch seems not to record a couple of frames between subsequent recordings as there’s still the same average amount of missing frames in a different character’s recording where Amarizo pressed record more frequently. I filled the gaps with multiple parts: Filbert doing the same movements with the same background from a different part of the song and either a similar cloud shadow or, when there was no similar one, the shadow’s frames around the gap repeating. The gahps in one’s ’oops are at 0:29 and 0:59 and especially the second one with a similar cloud is closed pretty well, at least if you don’t pay close attention to the cloud shadow and leaves. And, as Amarizo said, why would you when there’s a singing blue squirrel to look at?

There are so many uses of the Coconut Song
I counted them myself, there are thirty-one.

Finally it’s done. I thought I could just quickly cover this simple song and draw some slutty anime shit and get it out on April 1st as well, but here we are, more than two months later. Hopefully, it has been worth the weight. As you might have noticed, I’m the Link-Riolu of the Past. But if you followed me on Twitter or Discord (or read my description novels and paid attention to easter eggs in fideos), you already know that I changed my name. There will be a novel about it on my website soon (hopefully), here is a very short Twitter quote:

My quest for the Holy Name has not led me to love at first sight but I’m committing to the best one now. I hope I can get used to this new name, which is mine, which belongs to me, which I possess the ownership of, which I conceived but which is of course already taken.

This fideo is quite different from my other 8-bit stuff but I hope it’s still enjoyable. Either way, the next one will be a "proper" one again (probably a Mystery Dungeon), so don’t freak out, as Jeff would say. But it’s not the only thing that’s finally done, as you might have noticed as well.

When I made Introducing Ganondorf, I decided that I wanted to do Link again. It was my first fideo and the general idea is great, but the fideo itself is horrible in every aspect. Even the sound is horrible, but that’s a problem of the editing programme I used back then. It would be a waste if I wouldn’t add all the new things from the later updates like better abilities, story, maps and more gameplay in Overwatch itself rather than from the original game, especially since Link perfectly fits into the current story events I made up. For the first version, I didn’t even write a script or plan it in any way and just made Jeff say stuff as I went along. The upside of that method is time over quality of course. But despite the quality, it was my first attempt at fideos and as such, it holds a special place in my heart. And that also means that this remake had to be worthy of being the remake of my first fideo and of a great idea.

Animal Crossing: Wild World, along with Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, was my first game for my first console, a white DS lite. I played it a lot and have many good memories of it. I remember playing it in bed sometimes and falling asleep while doing so, waking up the next day not only to an empty DS with all progress lost, but to be greeted by Resetti as well. The museum was my favourite place and I loved gathering exhibits. Fossils were the most interesting to me, followed by fish. Insects were alright but I didn’t care about the paintings. These old paintings, that are indeed quite impressive from a technical view, were the only topic in art class at school, so until a couple of years ago I thought I hated art and found it boring. But then, thanks to the interwebs, I realised that there are many other forms of drawing arts and I do actually like some of them a lot. If only I had realised that earlier. The museum’s music is very great and nostalgic as well, my favourite versions are fossils and paintings. Blathers was one of my favourite characters, I always enjoyed talking to him and related to his sleep cycle and sleepiness. The observatory was amazing as well, I was really sad that they removed it in New Leaf. Also, I always thought it would be great to have a flora museum to collect all flowers, trees etc. in one place. The insect area is a little like that, but I would like a proper one. For New Horizons, I wish that they bring back the observatory and add a flora section.

Beach Cave. The very first dungeon. The beginning of an incredible journey. This song makes me especially nostalgic. It reminds me of the first hours spent in a dungeon. Back when the game was new and magical and I explored every floor completely instead of trying to get to the stairs as quickly as possible before I die, starve or run out of PP. And this song, partly because of the nostalgic factor, is one of my favourites from the game.

After Canalave City, I finally started learning HTML and CSS. Though I didn’t get that far, I dont’t know why. I guess partly because I had to waste a lot of time to research, think about and do something for the two baby tortoises my mum apparently spontaneously bought but that’s a different story. My plan was to spend one week learning web development stuff and the next week making the next fideo. I was listening to music when I was learning and Dragonspiral Tower started playing. Why not cover that next, I thought, it sounds great and rather simple. Then again, I felt guilty for choosing a song that is simpler and shorter. After all, everything I do has to be better than last time.

Finally I covered this song, it’s one of my favourites from the game. Two months ago, when I first mentioned wanting to cover Aegis Cave, I said that I apparently haven’t been there yet in the games as I didn’t remember the Regis and Unowns and just know the song because I’ve listened to the soundtrack a lot. When I was sick in December, I dusted off my game, saw the Regigigas symbol on the save file and found Unown stones in the Kangaskhan Storage and immediately remembered. And apparently only a couple of different Unowns can spawn on each floor and you can check which ones exactly in the menu. Knowing that definitely would have made things easier.

📒 Mʏ Tʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛs
The potential topics I had in mind for this year’s Jeff Christmas song were toxicity or, to change things up and bring something positive in, saying thanks to Jeff and the Overwatch team for the good things they’ve done. But then they announced Overwatch 2 and I just had to make Jeff sing about that. The new stuff looks great (and they are finally continuing the story, I care a lot about stories) and I’m looking forward to it but my first thought was that they just mostly stopped updating the game to save everything up for one giant update that they’ll call a sequel for attention and money. Usually, games are either updated or they are not and keep getting sequels instead. This seemed to me as if they suddenly switched from one to the other but they also haven’t because Overwatch 1 gets everything except for the new PvE modes as well and all other modes are played together by players of both games. This makes it sound like they are making a giant update and the PvE part of it is a paid DLC. Though, I’ve read that OW 2 was supposed to be a real sequel but Jeff had to convince Blizzard that people would keep their things in OW 2 and that people from both games could play together in the PvP modes so that OW 1 players who expected to be able to keep playing the game as it used to be continually updated could still play it and I guess that made it mandatory to put the new things except for PvE in the old game as well. So we should be thankful to Jeff that it’s less of a sequel and more of an update than it used to be, it’s just a bit strange to keep calling it a sequel after those changes. Still, thanks and merry Christmas to you, Jeff! And, of course, the Overwatch team and everyone reading this as well. :)

Last update, we gave you balance / fixes / new skins / new heroes / new maps / events
But the very next day you put it away.
This time, to save us from tears
We’re gonna call it a sequel.

No update could satisfy.
We’ve been working hard, but you just do not care
Tell me, people, do you play the game, still?
Well, it’s been three years, it doesn’t surprise me.

Wonderful Patch
I wrote to you and sent it
Singing about balance, fixes, new content, I meant it
Now I know what a fool I’ve been
But if we made a sequel, we know we’d fool you again

Desperate devs, can’t please the community
No matter what we do, can’t do it right
No use, we need some way to keep the game alive

I couldn’t decide which PMD 2 song to cover next. There are so many great songs but I also have to have an idea for a drawing. Initially, I was nearly certain that I wanted to do the Aegis Cave next, since I love the song and it’s not as "mainstream" as Treasure Town, Dialga’s Fight to the Finish, Don’t Ever Forget and such (at least I think). Apparently, I haven’t been in the Aegis Cave though as I can’t remember a dungeon with the Regis and Unowns. I’ll dust my game off (that I never finished completely, the last thing I remember was Manaphy) and actually finish it before I will cover that song. Then I had the idea to animate Spinda shaking a shake in the beat of the bar’s amazing music and I decided to do that next.

Let me tell you the grand tale of Riolu and Chimchar from Team Fire.

⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅs
http://riolu.link/rezawrces/music

Very creative team name, I know. Back then, I couldn’t think of a better name and wanted to continue playing. PMD2 Sky is one of my most favourite games and so is the soundtrack. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to experience this wonderful game as a child and to this day I get very emotional when I listen to the soundtrack or even see scenes of the game. That’s quite useful actually, whenever I have something in my eye I can just listen to some especially emotional or sad songs and it will be removed in no time.

The game has so many great songs that I couldn’t decide which one to cover first, so I just took the first song to begin the PMD 2 covers and to get some more practice before I do the best songs. At first, I finished the cover only using the 2A03 channels. I put up that initial version for download as well. However, I didn’t like the sound of the noise-only base drums at all but the triangle channel was entirely used up by the bass and juggling base and drums in the same loud triangle channel doesn’t sound good either. I also had the idea to use additional channels to attempt to create an echo, so I added the VRC6 channels, moved the base to the sawtooth channel, added triangle sounds to the base drums and had two more pulse channels to use for the echo or other things. I wasn’t sure if using the sawtooth channel as base is a good idea though as it doesn’t sound as good and the loud triangle base is certainly a very distinct feature of 2A03 music. Because I used an odd number of lines per beat, I had to add Gxx in every single line of the first echo channel to make it start half a beat later. Using more than 1 effect column with 7 channels however wouldn’t fit my video layout and I didn’t want to half the resolution just for a couple of pixels, so I edited the second effect column of VRC6’s Pulse 1 channel out. Just pretend the echo notes in that channel all have G04 behind them.

A year ago, I tried to draw a BotW landscape to use as my outro. It was supposed to have signs next to a pathwaytrailroutetrack with previous videos and everything. Unfortunately though, my pixel art abilities were not nearly good enough and after a couple of days, I gave up because it looked horrible. Then I had the idea of the stage that the video is being showed on and the standing signs turned into hanging signs. Now, with a lot more pixel art experience, I attempted to draw a landscape again and to my surprise it looked great. I’m always afraid to draw at higher resolutions because then one can see my non-existing drawing abilities in greater detail. I proceeded to draw Wigglytuff and it looked great, so did Riolu and Chimchar. I couldn’t believe that something I drew looked that great. I guess I did indeed improve and I shouldn’t be scared. Saying this feels very familiar.

Then I drew Chatot though and it looked horrible. At first, I thought that was because I had reference poses of the other 3 Pokémon in SFM and apparently I could only draw something that looks good with a perfectly posed reference. Next was Grovyle and it looked just as good as the first 3 but there was no Grovyle model for SFM as well, so I guess it wasn’t the missing reference. Apparently, birds are just as impossible to draw as hands. I considered removing Chatot because it’s ruining this otherwise beautiful piece (I call it "Cover Cover"), but Chatot just fits perfectly in Shaymins spot being looked at by Wigglytuff and I can’t have Wigglytuff without Chatot. In the end, I gave up on improving Chatot and the ugliness is kind of needed, it would look too good for a drawing by me otherwise.

Using the NES colour palette was once again fun and looks great, it just doesn’t have enough colours to nicely shade things. I considered using dithering but sometimes the only fitting colour is the same as the outline and I also don’t know if dithering would look good with my coloured lines in general. Maybe I should just try it some time. This time though, I settled for no shading since I also like flat unshaded styles.

I have no idea why I finished the fideo this late. It only took 60 hours to make, this would finally have given me some time before the next fideo to start working on my website and to finish the channel revolution. Apparently, the once again unusually large amount of RL stuff that happened during the last two weeks consumed the remaining time I had. Some big, positive and greatly needed things have happened recently though, so that’s good. There will be 2 more 8-bit covers before the obligatory annual Christmas fideo. I hope that I will be able to finish them quickly and finally have time for said things without having to stop regular uploads again. Until then, have a wonderful day and if you actually read all of this, have a delicious Toast Hyrule :)

The Night 𝙃𝙚 Came to Termina!

⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅs
http://riolu.link/rezawrces/music

At the beginning of the year, I had the idea to make an 8-bit version of this song and I was really excited to recreate the high ticking noise and everything else. But I put it on my fideo list to make it for Halloween, hoping that by then I would have a lot of FamiTracker experience and would be able to do the song justice.

Now I’d say I’ve just had enough experience to make it good enough. The base drum actually sounds like one unlike the terrible attempt I made in the GoT theme. Apparently 3 Triangle wave ticks are enough. During the creation process and when I was done I actually liked and was satisfied with how it sounded. In fact, I liked it so much that I listened to it for hours while drawing the pixel art. Maybe that’s why I’m not sure if it’s good anymore now as I usually don’t like a song anymore when I’ve listened to it too many times consecutively. I just couldn’t resist because I was so surprised that I actually for the first time made an 8-bit cover that I liked. Now however, I think it just sounds good because the song is so simple that it’s impossible to make a bad sounding cover. The only thing I’m still satisfied with is the percussion.

I’ve actually not watched the film before, I just knew the great music from Dead by Daylight but to get something for the visuals of the fideo, I watched it. I expected a scene of Laurie looking ouf of a window and seeing Michael Myers outside in the dark that I could recreate in a top-down video game style but I only found one potential scene: Michael Myers standing menacingly on top of the stairs, only his silhouette being visible in the dark and Laurie or rather the camera looking up to him. While I could barely see anything during that actual scene, in my head I had all kinds of ideas how a scene like this could look amazing. Myers, or as a Zelda reference the Skull Kid with Majora’s Mask and Myers’s’s knife, could be standing up there, his dark silhouette in front of a window that gives a bit of light to the top floor and lets us see the beautiful stars, but also Majora’s Mask’s eerie moon, the main focus lying on the mask’s glowing eyes. Of course, the Skull Kid has to be accompanied by Tael.

Unfortunately, the end result doesn’t even come close to the incredible scene I had envisioned in my mind. I had to redraw the interior of the house many many times, especially the stairs and railings to get the perspective right. There were also other things I wanted to add like maybe a generator or some other DbD reference and a pumpkin glowing in the bottom left corner behind the railing similar to the film poster I animated but I ran out of time. I really need a lot more pixel art experience, the visuals for these fideos take way too long to make and are not at all to my standards.

Regarding the integration of the film into my mind, I was disappointed by it. Amarizo watched it last year on Halloween and already told me that it was boring and apparently he was right. To me it just consisted of meaningless and boring scenes. Occasionally, Michael Myers shows up to do nothing or when he actually does something, he just kills people in unspectacular ways who to me were just actors pretending to be killed and not actually dying characters with interesting personalities that I learn about and get close to during the story. Another big part of the non-existing story that bothers me is the fact that Michael’s motive and backstory is just: He is evil. That’s it. He has been evil from birth for no reason and will forever be evil. In my opinion, this is just boring and unimaginative and really shows that the entire film has no content at all, just a couple of scary scenes that were not really scary. The only good thing about it is the music. And I guess a couple of nice sounding quotes by Michael’s psychiatrist. Maybe it’s a good thing though that it wasn’t more scary or brutal, I actually don’t like horror or violence at all. Instead of nightmares, I got some alright iconic scenes, great music and great quotes. I love quotes. Quote me on that.

I briefly started working on this 5 months ago and I wanted to get it done before season 8 ends. But of course things went differently.

This is my first attempt at percussion in FamiTracker. I used both the triangle and noise channel with volume slides, pitch slides and arpeggio envelopes. At first I thought the triangle drums sounded a bit weird but when there are other sounds playing at the same time it sounds alright.

There are multiple reasons why it took 4 weeks to get this fideo done. Some were out of my control like real life stuff and the troubles I had trying to make the animation. Clip Studio Paint is amazing and can do a lot of the things I always dreamt of but quite a few of them don’t always work, at least the way I need them. For a pixel art animation I of course needed nearest neighbour interpolation which is amazingly possible in a canvas setting. Unfortunately, this applies only to moving raster images, not to file objects inside an animation folder (but outside of animation folders it does?!) and not to camera movements. I love file objects, the ability to add a seperate file as layer is amazing and what I always wanted and so I use them whenever possible in animations. It took a long time to figure all these strange things out and to make it work the way I wanted it to. Adding every single one of the many 60 fps-frames that I animated and exported in Aseprite to their respective frames in Clip Studio Paint was annoying and time consuming as well. Actually, at first I wanted to animate the camera movements in Video deluxe since it has good position keyframing but of course no way to change the scaling interpolation. After the finished animation was exported in Clip Studio Paint, I had to resize every one of the 5900 frames to 3840p in Aseprite. I tried it multiple times but every time Aseprite (and other programmes) crashed because it ran out of memory. So I had to import the images into multiple Aseprite files and export them separately. The resizing alone took 4 hours. But I’m still incredibly glad that I can now use Aseprite to do this.

The biggest reason in my control were my usual self-doubts. A lot of the time I wasn’t motivated to continue because I thought the song and the animation will be terrible. Some times I actually liked my progress and had fun but in the next moment I changed my mind again. I’m not sure if this is good or good enough but I tried to convince myself that it might be terrible now but I need to continue if I want to improve. Just like my Developer Updates and Jeff Sings improved. Though it seems like people only watch my old and bad fideos. First the old DbD bug fideos and now Introducing Link was suddenly watched by six thousand people. I should be honoured that people actually watch it but it’s just really terrible quality-wise and content-wise and unfortunately these people don’t seem to take a look at or are interested in my better fideos.

This is the first actual song cover I’ve created using FamiTracker and I’m surprisingly pretty happy with how it turned out. For the main voice I used the triangle channel because it sounds kind of like a flute at high octaves, the downside is that it doesn’t allow many modifications or decorations except for vibrati which is why I considered using the FDS expansion with a triangle wave at first. In order to simulate the sound of the supporting voice, I used a volume envelope that starts loud, becomes quieter quickly and then slowly fades along with a bit of a tremolo. This creates an interesting sound with an initial attack that lingers a bit afterwards, just like in the original. Both pulse channels play the supporting voice alternately to make the most out of the lingering sounds and to prevent the overlapping lingering of the last two notes from causing a dissonance I added a faster fade as release in the volume envelope that is used on the second to last note of longer notes. (I wrote this paragraph a year ago when I made the song)

In regard of the integration of the drawings into the fideo, this was my first time drawing hair. For the first time it turned out acceptably I think, partly thanks to Amarizo’s helpful suggestions.

Song: http://riolu.link/rezawrces/music
Game: http://riolu.link/tlok (playable in web browsers or as download)

It all started a year ago in New Jersey, I mean in Ordon, when I wanted to make an 8-bit version of Ilia’s Theme to use in my outro and while I’m at it a high quality version of the Overworld Theme to use in my intro. I started by recreating the already 8-bit Overworld Theme to learn how to use FamiTracker and to learn about 8-bit music in general. After I made Ilia’s Theme as well, I realised I really enjoyed making 8-bit music and that I should start making 8-bit covers of songs I love. In fideo form there had to be some sort of visuals as well, so I came up with the idea of making short pixel animations fitting to the songs along with the pattern and oscilloscopes from FamiTracker for those interested. Originally I didn’t want to upload the Overworld Theme as it’s almost the same as the original, but I liked the idea of making an animation of Link-Riolu in a first-Zelda-style environment killing an enemy with a sword. Link-Riolu was supposed to kill an enemy, then move a room to the right where the animation would loop and the same room with the enemy would appear again. But then I thought, why not make a couple of different rooms? Or why not a whole area? Or why not a whole game with a big map, interesting characters and an interesting story?

So I started drawing terrain textures which I have never done before. The rock walls were especially difficult. I tried many different versions and colours but I just couldn’t get something that actually looks like a rock wall. The current version was the best but then the next big obstacle appeared: Making many versions of this texture for all possible angles that all perfectly fit together in any combination. This was very tiring to do and I was very glad when I was done. The water animations turned out surprisingly well I think, considering I’ve never drawn or animated water before. Then I drew the walking animation for Link-Riolu and it was again a new challenge to draw a character in very few pixels. I couldn’t get something even close to acceptable at first, so I took a look at older Pokémon sprites for reference and proceeded to make the body very wide with barely any legs. It was good enough for my first attempt, so next I spent a lot of time creating the map, outlining the story and thinking of interesting characters. I’ve always wanted to write stories and create characters and I enjoyed doing so a lot. This was also the birth of Zelda-Kirlia. Unfortunately, you won’t be seeing the story or characters yet as I will stop working on the game to make other things for now.

When it came to implementing the ideas into the game, I had to spend days to get the transition between maps right. In TLoZ, enemies are not visible during the transition, so I created the entire map in one game map and then created lots of screen sized maps that each have a part of the whole map in them. When transitioning, first the player would be teleported from the screen sized map they are currently on to the relative position on the big map, making all enemies disappear. Then the player would be moved by one tile to the next part of the map, triggering the Map Scroll script. After the camera is centered on the next part of the map, the player would be teleported to the relative position on the respective screen sized map, making the enemies of that map part appear and completing the transition. However, there were multiple problems.

Firstly, the Map Scroll script starts the camera transition when the bottom right of the player’s sprite leaves the screen. This results in an instant start of the camera movement on bottom and right transitions, but on very delayed movements on top and left transitions. So I came up with the solution of making the player invisible as soon as the top and left transitions start and moving them at maximum speed to the next tile, activating the camera movement as soon as possible. To create the illusion of the player moving regularly, a copy of Link-Riolu’s sprite appears and moves 1 tile up or left at regular speed.

Secondly, there are no native ways (at least to my knowledge) in RPG Maker MV of triggering player teleports upon attempting to leave the map at the edge of the screen. Usually, teleports are triggered upon touching the tile on the edge of the screen. However, I wanted the player to be able to stand on the tiles on the edge of the screen without triggering the transition, instead triggering it only when leaving that tile in the direction of the next map. So I tried many different things for days until I found a looping check for button inputs that starts when touching the tile on the edge of the screen, ending the input check when pressing the movement key that leads back and triggering the transition steps upon pressing the movement key that leads out of the current screen. This worked nearly perfectly, exc

Ministeck Mosaic in Time Lapse – Episode 5: Blaziken

I actually made this (and anoner one that will be uploaded soon as well) in August last year for my brother’s 12th birthday but didn’t edit and upload it until now as I didn’t want to upload anything until the channel rework is done (which it still isn’t, I’m still working on the banner and reworking the profile picture) but I want to start uploading regularly now. To do so, I chose to edit the Blaziken Ministeck footage as one of the videos that I already started but haven’t finished yet. The next Ministeck video will be the last one for now since I don’t have enough parts left for another one and they are quite expensive. When I decided to edit the Blaziken video just to upload something as filler while I’m finishing the banner, I wasn’t sure if a Ministeck time lapse is still appropriate to upload. I mean, what is that compared to Wonderful Patch and Introducing Ganondorf? Just a dirty, filthy, smelly piece of moving image. I will upload it anyway now because I’ve worked on it for two weeks and to please the YouTube algorithm. The DbD bug videos don’t have enough views.
I used this video as an opportunity to learn DaVinci Resolve, which took longer than I expected as I had to look up even the simplest things in the beginning. It took one whole day alone to figure out why putting a png image with no transparency would create a black background around it and I didn’t find anything on the web about it, it was pure luck that I found the solution myself by doing something that I thought I already tried. Resolve is amazing and can do a lot of things more and better but there is one fundamental thing it for some reason can’t do: Smooth position keyframes. Apparently many people have complained about this for years but it’s still not there. So while I love Resolve, if I want to animate the position of something like the annotations and overlay images in this video, I have to render it in Resolve, import it in Video deluxe to animate the position of images, render it in Video deluxe, import the video in Resolve and render the final version there as it has better render options and if I have to put something on top of the animated things like the text in this case. This is very annoying but apparently there is no other way.
Another thing I did was inform myself more about file formats and codecs, settling for .mov with h.264 200 mbps and LPCM for lossless audio. Originally I wanted to use DNxHR but apparently Windows’s’s default programs don’t support it. Also, for some reason, h.264 video exported by Resolve has strange big artifacts when played back by Windows’s’s default programs or VLC but not when played back by the QuickTime Player or imported to Resolve or Video deluxe. I have no Idea what causes this and found nothing on the web. I can’t put the file on my website like this if it can’t be played back without huge artifacts.
Next to learning Resolve, I also tried to do some new things like annotations in the style of game dialogues which is an idea I had a long time ago and making the background dark and blurry while showing an overlay image and meanwhile slowly transitioning the background unnoticably. It might not look like it but this video took two weeks to edit. Most of the time of course was spent on learning how to do what I wanted to do in the first place but I for example cut the pauses between nearly every single placed part when my arm is not visible to make the action more compact.
After test watching the uploaded video I saw that the artifacts are visible on YouTube as well. I guess I have to render it again and use DNxHR after all. Now the video will be postponed again. It was supposed to go live on friday two weeks ago, two weeks after Introducing Ganondorf. I expected the editing to take no more than two days.

In this Developer Update, our favourite Game Director Jeff Kaplan introduces Ganondorf along with the first real story progression since launch. He is currently available for testing on the PTR. Have a nice March 32nd!

Ganondorf’s Stats:
Role: Tank
Health: 600
Primary Fire: Sword of the Sages (65 damage per shot, 2 shots per second, 13 shots before reload, arcing projectile, 60 m/s projectile speed (the same as Ana’s sleep dart or Genji’s shuriken))
Alternate Fire: Puppeteer (take control of a dead teammate or enemy until they respawn or Ganondorf’s body or puppet dies, start with 50% health, can’t use or charge the puppet’s ultimate ability, damage and healing as puppet charges Ganondorf’s own ultimate, Ganondorf’s body loses 50% of his current health and can’t be healed while he controls someone, 1 s cast time, 8 s cooldown after he returns to his body, press interact on Ganondorf’s body to return to it early, receiving damage during cast time cancels the ability and activates the cooldown, the puppet cannot be resurrected as it is considered a living player, but if he leaves the puppet the corpse can be resurrected again)
E: Shadow Barrier (deploy a cylindrical barrier with 7 m radius and 5 m height, enemies touching it are slowed down to 25% movement speed and take 100 damage/s, going through takes 1 s for slim charakters like DPS heroes, does not block enemy shots, 6 s uptime, 13 s cooldown after ability activation, the barrier parts are connected by 6 pillars with 300 HP each, destroying a pillar removes the parts of the barrier connected to it)
Shift: Twilight Portals (create 3 portals 7 m apart from each other at a distance of up to 25 m, after 1 s you can press shift again on one of the portals to teleport to it, the portals stay up for 6 seconds or until you use one, 6 s cooldown starting when the portals close)
Ultimate Ability: Dark Beast (transform into the Dark Beast Ganon at 1000 HP for 8 s, hold primary fire for 1 s to start a ramming attack that deals 80 damage, can be used to instantly cancel Puppeteer from any distance by using it as puppet)
Passive Ability: Triforce of Power (for every 2 received damage, 1 HP is converted to armour, after 1 s of not receiving damage, each second 15 armour are converted back to regular health)
Melee: Sword of the Sages

I set 2 personal records with this video: Longest time to finish and most Magix Video deluxe crashes. I’ll try DaVinci Resolve next, hopefully it can handle more complex projects without crashing all the time and lagging terribly. For this Developer Update I wanted to take some more creative liberties in the story instead of mostly copying the story from The Legend of Zelda and putting it in the Overwatch universe. I also tried to make good looking SFM animations, for example in the intro Ganondorf was supposed to be impaled by the sword and then pull it out and make a gesture with the sword similar to the one in the final battle in Twilight Princess, but it looked so terrible that I eventually changed it for just another idle animation from a TF2 character. During my time in SFM and Blender I learned that I can’t model or 3D animate and that I’m not interested in learning it either. I wish I could pay a 3D animator to animate some scenes for videos like this. Another idea I had was to use a green screen as floor so that the character’s shadows would be on the greenscreen and could then be visible in the finished product, but the green screens I tried didn’t have shadows on their surfaces and I didn’t have enough time to find a way around this. As usual, I barely finished it in time and had no to barely no sleep the last nights, I think I’ve never been awake for as long as right now. Actually, I planned to finish the banner and a couple of half-done videos first to release until the April video would come out, but I couldn’t even finish the banner and had to stop working on it to start the April video, apparently barely in time. There’s just too much to do and not enough time.

Now, after 6.5 hours, the fideo is rendered but as it was bound to happen errors sort of took over my fideo and there were 9 major errors in it, 2 things I forgot, 4 things i messed up and 3 SFM green screen clips that were invisible for some reason. I had to copy the files and put the copies into the timeline to get them to be visible again. I’m rendering it with a low bitrate now to get it on YouTube before March 32nd ends in UTC. Will I get the fideo up in time? Will I ever be able to go to bed again?

This Christmas, it’s Jeff who sent out an important letter with a promise for the Overwatch community.

I keep pushing my PC and Video Deluxe to their limits with these videos. The thousands of just a few frames long video and sound snippets made the programme react extremely slowly, just using ctrl z took 40 seconds each time. It was really a pain working like this. Additionally, after the fun part of writing the script with the visuals and lyrics is done, there’s just hours upon hours of putting Jeff’s words together, autotuning them and then adjusting the visual Jeff to the changed audio. It’s very monotone and repetitive work that requires a lot of concentration but the thought of the finished video made me keep going. Maybe it wouldn’t be such an issue if I didn’t have to rush an event video for once.
This video was once again way too close to being finished too late. The plan was to start working on it early in November and to release a lot of videos before the year ends, but the channel revolution that is still not completely finished took months instead of weeks and since October I’ve been very busy with RL stuff.
Now that the RL stuff is mostly solved and the channel revolution almost done, I will start releasing videos a lot more frequently very soon. There’s a lot to come, from continuations of existing series to miscellaneous videos and new series.
Also, there is unfortunately no event intro this time. I’ve already prepared a pixelated snow animation for the new intro but unfortunately I can’t properly put it in Video Deluxe because it’s not at all suited for extremely low resolution and fps editing and rendering. More on that later.
There’s only one thing left to say: All I want for Christmas is time. And sleep.

After I rendered the final version, it had a clicking sound in the right ear so I rendered it again. The next time the controller symbol over Winterfell set in too late and after a look in Video Deluxe I realised that it’s still there, its just invisible at the beginning for no reason. I tried taking the animated controller image from the episode 1 intro but that one changed the exact same way. The only way to correct it was to use a part of an older already rendered version of episode 2 where the controller wasn’t invisible. 6 hours later that was done as well but in the controller part the sound sounded weird and the clicking sound was back again. Then I gave up and just used the version with no clicking sound but with the controller appearing too late. I hope you don’t mind. Just remember that it’s actually there, you just can’t see it.

Once again I planned things I’ve never done before and I had no idea if I were capable of doing for this video. Some of the improvements compared to last year’s April Fools’ video that I wanted to make are: Creating an actual backstory for the character that is a mixture of Overwatch’s and The Legend of Zelda’s stories, showing every ability in Overwatch with Source Filmmaker animations, making Jeff talk about more than just the charakter like the creation process (which was actually how I created Zelda’s design), future changes, perfectly animating and recreating the intro and outro scene with the hero and increasing the overall length and quality.
Unfortunately, I was running out of time and couldn’t refine the SFM animations to the extent I wanted to, for example, I planned to make a summoning animation that would be used in the intro scene and in first person to actually summon fairies and the Phantom, to add a lot to the intro scene like the fairy flying around Zelda before hovering next to her, the Phantom awakening and putting its shield and sword up and to have Zelda and the Phantom actually walk around in some cases instead of just standing around in the same spot. I thought 1 month would be enough for the video but a lot of time was lost due to sleep problems, PC problems and my family visiting me.
Nonetheless, creating this video was fun and I’ve learnt a lot, especially about SFM. Nothing beats the feeling of having the finished product in front of me after weeks of hard work and doubts whether I could accomplish what I had in my mind. But this feeling is always mixed with seeing every single frame and pixel I’m not entirely happy with. In addition, I’ve heard and watched every single frame so many times that I’m kind of tired of them.

I had to render the video 4 times because every time it had mistakes by me and render errors. Each rendering took about 4 hours and 20 minutes. In the final version I still noticed a mistake by me, can you find it?

As I’m writing this the video is finally uploading. Unfortunately in my time zone it’s already April 2nd, sorry for the late upload. Also, I havent slept last night and only a couple of hours the 3 nights before that to get the video done in time, so my writing skills might not be on point. What is sleep? Good question, 10 points for Gryffindor. When it’s about the order of the Cossack Tails of the integration of the Cossack Tails into the order, I can’t take a joke.
