What is the appeal of mass movements and what attracts people to them? What type of person gets sucked into one? Are there underlying ideas or themes that are shared by all mass movements?

In 1951, Eric Hoffer published a book called "True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements." In it, he argues that mass movements are broadly interchangeable even when their stated goals or values differ dramatically.

In this video essay, I apply some of his insights to modern social justice movements.

The non-stop humor and entertainment the Trump presidency continues. Trump’s Department of Education has opened up an investigation Princeton University to determine whether it has made misrepresentations with regards to its compliance with title VI of the civil rights act of 1964. In other words, every year or however often it is, Princeton university has to warrant and represent to the united states government that it has complied with title VI which declares that “no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Well, Princeton university has received 10s of millions of dollars in federal taxpayer funds so it must comply with title VI. Now what is the problem you might ask? Sure Princeton is not engaging in racial discrimination in its hiring and in its admissions process. What the hell are we talking about here?

Well, the department of education is simply taking the university’s president at his word. Because Princeton university president Christopher Eisgruber has written an open letter to the Princeton community declaring that racism persists at Princeton and that racism remains embedded in the structure of the university itself.

Last week, President Trump directed OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund racial sensitivity training if they involve concepts of "white privilege" and "critical race theory" which he says is "anti-American propaganda,"

In a two page memo, the director of the OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET directed all agencies to identify all contracts or other agency spending related to QUOTE any training on "critical race theory, "white privilege," or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either (1) that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or (2) that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil

What is critical race theory and why did Trump ban it from federal agencies?

With each passing day, Trump's characterization of the Media as the "Enemy of the People" is proving more and more accurate. Just look at the coverage of the riots and the Kyle Rittenhouse situation.

A few months back, it looked like Donald Trump was in serious trouble, but looking at the polls and anecdotal evidence at this point, it really seems like Democrats' endorsement of BLM could cost them the election.

On November 18, 2016, a YouTuber by the name of Akilah Obviously, posted a 10 minute video titled We Thought She Would Win to her YouTube channel. The video consisted of footage of Akilah at Hillary Clinton’s campaign party at the Javits in NY on the night of the 2016 presidential election. In the video, Akilah discussed the night’s events and the implications of Secretary Clinton’s defeat by Donald Trump.

The next day, Akilah discovered that another YouTuber, Sargon of Akkad, had posted a video titled SJW Levels of Awareness to his YouTube channel. His video consisted entirely of six clips from Akilah’s video totaling two minutes, spliced together.

Akilah responded by submitting a “takedown notice” to YouTube pursuant to the “DMCA” which led to YouTube disabling access to Sargon’s video. Sargon immediately emailed Akilah and politely asked her to withdraw the takedown notice, asserting that his video fell within the fair use exception to the Copyright Act as parody or satire. Three days later, after she refused to withdraw her notice, Sargon sent YouTube a DMCA counter notification, asserting that his video
was “entirely transformative and intended for parody.” Thereafter, YouTube reinstated public access to Sargon’s video.

In what would become one of Akilah’s first of many missteps, she sued Sargon for copyright infringement and lost after Sargon filed a motion to dismiss, which the court granted on the grounds that his use of Akilah’s material constituted fair use.

Throughout the course of the litigation, Akilah made references to the ongoing suit on her Twitter, defaming Sargon and being generally vengeful and malicious. She made baseless and inflammatory remarks about Sargon, referring to him as a white supremacist and boasting about trying to get Sargon banned from GoFundme which Sargon was using to fund his legal costs. Her invective on Twitter reached astronomical heights when she gloated that she was going to take hundreds of thousands of dollars from Sargon. When it was pointed out to her that her frivolous lawsuit was putting the financial position of Sargon’s family at risk, she laughed off the concerns and said Sargon’s kids weren’t her problem.

Akilah’s diatribes on social media would later come back to bite her. After losing in her copyright infringement lawsuit, Sargon then sued Akilah in the District Court for the Southern District of New York to recover the attorney’s fees he incurred as the cost of defending himself in litigation.

Lackadaisical, limp and listless Billie Eilish is "literally" fighting for her life. Can you tell?

A panoply of mega-privileged celebs said we're fighting for our lives so we have to get Trump out and vote for Biden. It was weird because they seemed pretty calm for people who are *literally* fighting for their lives.

A couple days ago, I watched Barack Obama's speech that he delivered at the democratic national convention. He spoke a fair amount about the constitution and about the principle of democracy and it got me thinking that most people, even educated people, don’t understand what exactly the framers of the constitution were trying to achieve and they don’t understand the form of government that the constitution codified.

The simply incorrect conception that people have about the American form of government is that they think the foundational principle of it is democracy. The reality is that the framers of the constitution were deeply afraid of a democracy and put in a tremendous amount of thought into how to tame it and guard against its ill effects. Now, The American system of government undoubtedly has democratic features, but they were only adopted begrudgingly and after the founders of the country were able to agree on a rather ingenious method for minimizing the negative effects of it and only because the alternative types of government such a monarchy or an oligarchy are, as the framers witnesses firsthand so prone to devolving into oppressive tyranny and despotism. In other words -- and this is something I spoke about a recent video on how to think about political issues in a non-ideological way -- whatever elements of democracy we do have in the united states is only due to the recognition that it is a less miserable state of affairs than the alternatives.

The main weakness inherent in democracy is the tyranny of the majority (or tyranny of the masses) in which the majority of an electorate pursues exclusively its own objectives at the expense of those of the minority factions.

Ah...the familiar uproar before the facts are in. Joe Biden released a nonsense statement about the need to dismantle systemic racism and so on. Forget about waiting for all the facts before weighing in on this. No. Joe Biden has to release the most inflammatory statement possible as soon faster than he can say malarkey.

Of course, more footage has now come in and, unsurprisingly, there was more to this story than police brutality and cops hunting down black people. We now know that Jacob Blake physically assaulted the officers before this altercation seen in the original footage. If you only had the first piece of footage, you wouldn't know that. So rather than this simplistic story of "cops shoot unarmed black man in the back 7 times" without any other context, we now know that Blake was a wanted felon, that he is a violent convicted rapist with multiple domestic violence counts against him, he was in the commission of a crime and wanted at the time the cops showed up and he attacked them physically before the altercation shown in the original footage which is why their guns were drawn.

Then, as they are attempting to arrest him walks around his car, opens the door and reaches for something at which point one of the officers shoots him multiple times in the back.

Woman describes her BIZARRE experience in "equity, diversity and inclusion training" with Robin DiAngelo

If you haven’t seen my previous video on this book white fragility by Robin DiAngelo, I suggest you check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvW4S...

Full "Blocked and Reported" episode can be found here https://barpodcast.fireside.fm/bonus2 and you can support them on Patreon here http://patreon.com/blockedandreported

White Fragility is a best-selling book which is more a less a lecture to white people about how they refuse to acknowledge their participation in racism. The book essentially places people which one critic of the book described as “any response to being told by DiAngelo that one is complicit in racism, apart from agreeing with her, is evidence of white fragility”. It is a truly awful, pseudoscientific garbage heap.

Anyhow, there’s a great podcast which I recommend checking out called Blocked and Reported, hosted by Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal. They recently published a great bonus episode which is conversation between one of the podcast hosts, Katie and a woman who was required to go through a year’s worth of equity, diversity and inclusion training with none other than Robin DiAngelo.

We look at some of the crazy, astonishing and absurd things that happened this week, including:

- the voice actor for Cleveland stepping down because characters of color should be voiced by people of color
- the Houston Association of Realtors is replacing “master” with “primary” on its online property database
- the Dixie Chicks renaming to "The Chicks"
- the Cambridge professor who says "White Lives Don't Matter"

Robin DiAngelo's book "White Fragility" has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year now. She's enriched herself by telling white people they are irredeemably racist. The methodology she uses to arrive at her theses are flaws and unscientific.

Our society and politics appear to be on the edge of a precipice. I don't know what tool we have out our disposal other than dialogue and conversation.
