For this episode I show the final step of changing process the blade which takes place on the ice. After changing the blade to ensure the blade is level and cutting evenly across the conditioner the blade should be scrapped across the ice for several feet inspecting the snow shavings left behind. Then making adjustments to the blade bracket bolt to level the blade with the runners.

For this episode I do the impossible. Make a left handed turn while resurfacing the ice. Well I guess it is not impossible but defiantly not traditional. A few years back one day I was like…hey why not. I will give it a try and see what happens. If I am not mistaken there are machines out there with roller wheels on both sides the bumper for this very reason.

It is a different feeling turning the other way and not driving the blind side of the machine up the middle of the ice. As you turn up the middle the open side or left side of the machine is facing up the middle.

Although I was having fun at the beginning of the video I do not recommend this pattern unless you are an experience driver. Not so much the ice grooming part but the driving part. Making turns against the boards with no oh-shit wheel on the bumper to push you away if you missed time the turn is somewhat risky. The timing on the turns is critical. I don’t want to wake up one day driving an Olympia…but I guess I could never know better.

Remember…you didn’t learn this form me!!

In this episode I explain one of the most important ice maintenance routes; the cross cut. I do cross cuts every other week working figure eights in the other weeks.

I was never formally taught how to cross cut the ice I just heard about them years ago and it was something that needed to be done. What I do is what I think I should be doing. Seems to make sense. Let me know if you do anything different.

In this episode I go over how to set the down press settings for the leaf springs on the Zamboni’s conditioner and blade. The Zam has two sets of leaf springs that help keep the Zamboni’s conditioner on the ice. There are also leaf springs on the blade bracket to keep the blade from bouncing up and down.

I used the smaller ratchet for the conditioner leaf springs to get into the tight space. I should have used the bigger ratchet for blade leaf spring tension bolt. It would have made the job a little easier.

You gonna have to watch the video. In short someone drove the Zamboni’s conditioner off the ice on the metal grating. Dinged up the conditioner’s runner on both sides. Also destroyed a blade in the process.

In this episode I go over the grease points on a Zamboni 546. I show the daily, week, monthly, semi-annual, and annual grease and maintenance points. I first go over the maintenance log then I walk around the Zamboni and point out all the grease points.

Although the video is somewhat long I edited out as much as I could. Some things just take time to show.

Feel free to skip to 7:40 if you want to dive into all the grease points and skip the maintenance log overview.

** I need to correct myself regarding blade angle. Blade angle does change as you are moving the blade wheel. However the angle that the blade is set for initially when a new blade is put on does not. We can call that the bite angle. The angle when the blade bites the ice. So yes you move the blade up and down some, but the angle where the blade starts biting the ice remain relatively the same. That being said when the blade starting getting real dull it takes a little more on the blade wheel to get the blade to start shaving ice. Especially in the mornings when the ice is cooled than after a long day/night.

In this episode I switch out the propane converter on the Zamboni 500. The old one is going bad and the engine is running little lean. Off camera a week later I also replaced the fuel hose leading from the converter to the carburetor.

In this episode I mount a little camera I bought at Home Depot to the conditioner of the Zamboni. I did two takes. The first take did not show the snow going into the bottom auger very well so I re-shot the video from a different mounting point. However, I did show the beginning of the first video to demonstrate how the lift bar/yokes/leaf springs extend out when going down onto the ice.

Sorry for the bad sound so I added some tunes. Although it’s not the best camera, it did a decent job of getting footage for under the Zamboni. I will post a review of the camera and where it get it on amazon if you like it. $20…not bad.

In this episode I replace the wash water pump on the Zamboni as well as go over the basics of the wash water system. I replace the old black impeller with the a more expensive but higher quality blue impeller. The blue impeller is soaked in oil to last longer.

In this episode I change the blade on the Zamboni with a blade made by 32 Degrees. I demonstrate how fast and easy the 32 Degree blade is to change with the threaded holes on the blade. Not having to reach under and around the conditioner to put a nut and bolt on saves time and head aches.

In this episode we discuss the Zamboni towel and how it helps spread water evenly over the ice. As well as the two different types of towels Zamboni offers.

Show Notes: I said in the video that when laying water with the white cotton towel; that when you turn your water off the towel keeps laying water for a foot or so. It is more like 3-5 feet. Same but the opposite coming out of the turn and turning the water back on. It will be several feet driven before the cotton towel soaks up water again before laying it.

Also zip ties vs blots. The machine on the ice gets the black micro-fiber towel with the bolts. At times the towel hangs too low with zip ties and drags on the ground. I never preferred the zip ties for that reason. Plus not as sharp of a look. The white cotton towel with the zip ties is for our back up machine. Like it matters because when we swap machines, we use the back towel and rack.

We also replace our black towel 2-3x a year. The white cotton towel can be washed and reused. The black micro-fiber towel does not wash well.

In this episode I will cover how the propane fuel system works on a Zamboni 546 and a 500 via 2000. Although there are a variety of power sources we have a two propane fueled Zambonis. Other ice resurfacer power sources included gasoline, diesel, battery, natural gas, and propane. We operate indoors so propane is our best option. Battery operated machines are much more expensive and weight more.

In this episode we learn about the board brush and what it does. We also change the brush out for a newer one.

Zamboni does offer a newer style board brush that is called a Power Brush. It is taller and can brush higher up the side of the kick strip. It is a $400 retrofit kit (https://zamboni.com/power-board-brush/) with brushes costing $200 after that.

We will defiantly get this soon and when we do, I will make a video

In this episode I show a top down view of the Zamboni Ice Resurfacer controls.

I thought about doing certain parts of the video, while on the ice, in a fast speed or frame rate but I just left it normal speed.

I did misspoke in the video regarding when to turn wash water pump on. On the ice I did the right procedure but when going over the controls I was late when mentioning wash water pump switch. Generally I wait like 1/4 lap or so before turning pump on after opening wash water valve. Then with a 1/4 - 1/2 lap left the wash water valve gets closed then a few seconds later the pump gets turned off.

And yes that was chocolate on the zam. If you saw it. I noticed it later and cleaned it but not during filming. Lol, what a fool.

Please excuse my poor video and editing. This is all new to me and learning as I go. Over time when I am more prepared, honed my video editing skills and flat out have better equipment, my videos will greatly improve.

In this episode I show you how to check the deflection of the horizontal auger chain on the Zamboni as well as how to tighten the chain. I will also show how to tighten the wash water belt by removing a link.

The horizontal auger chain deflection should be checked once a week, tighten if needed, and lube chain. The wash water pump belt should also be checked at the same time.

In this episode I mounted an iphone6 to the front of the Zamboni with a self stick, zip ties, and painters tape for good measure. About 48 inches of the ground and center of the machine.

Do not tell my boss or my wife!! If she knew I strapped my phone to the front of the Zam…well…I just hope she does not watch it!

As with the top down video I thought about doing certain parts of the video in a fast speed or frame rate but I just left it normal speed.
