Brass Eye Special (2001) - Paedogeddon *Controversial

A British television comedy series parodying the current affairs news programming. A series of six episodes aired on Channel 4 in 1997, and a further episode in 2001. The series was created and presented by Chris Morris.
Michael Grade, then chief executive of Channel 4, repeatedly intervened to demand edits to episodes of Brass Eye. In this the final episode a 'single-frame' 'subliminal message' was included reading "Grade is a cunt". (Removed for the DVD version).

This 2001 Special episode tackled paedophilia and the moral panic in parts of the British media following the murder of Sarah Payne, focusing on the name-and-shame campaign conducted by the News of the World in its wake. This included an incident in 2000 in which a paediatrician in Newport had the word "PAEDO" daubed in yellow paint on her home.[6] News of the World's then Editor Rebekah Brooks would years later discuss this campaign at the Leveson Inquiry.

Around 3,000 complaints were received concerning "Paedogeddon!", making it reportedly the most objected-to episode in British television history at the time.

The Daily Star decried Morris and the show, The Daily Mail ran a headline describing Brass Eye as "Unspeakably Sick" (quoting Beverley Hughes).
The Observer accused both papers of hypocrisy; it noted that the Star article was positioned adjacent to an article about the developing bust of 15-year-old singer Charlotte Church, and that the Mail's coverage was preceded by "close-ups" of the "bikini princesses" Beatrice and Eugenie, who were 12 and 11 at the time.

The episode won a Broadcast magazine award in 2002

Chris Morris' brilliant 'Brass Eye', a satire on tabloid television and sensationalist news programs. The current culture of the celebrity class where TV presenters act as crusaders in search of 'the truth' but all the while skirt real issues such as drugs, animal welfare and most controversially paedophilia; they mindlessly churn out 'the party line'.
This is arguably the most subversive television comedy ever made, and one the funniest. If satire exists to provoke moral reform 'To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable' (HL Mencken) then Brass Eye's blurring of the distinction between 'real' and 'fake' allows him to play both celebrity and politicians as fools.
Seeing celebrities humiliated is one of the primary joys of Brass Eye. In every episode we're confronted with their stupidity, their need for attention and their unthinking desire to promote 'good' causes. It's amazing that not one of them listens to what they're saying.
More convincing than Paxman. More ruthless than Sasha Baron Cohen. More intelligent than Stephen Hawkins - Absolute genius. Thank you Mr Morris!

"The supposed satire, presented by Chris Morris, was almost universally condemned and provoked a record 3,000 complaints when it was shown in July and controversially repeated a day later. Among those disgusted by it were Britsh Home Secretary David Blunkett, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell and Home Office minister Beverley Hughes - who branded it 'unspeakably sick' - Review in UK Tabloid
"About halfway through the final episode of Brass Eye (Channel 4), it began to occur to me that Chris Morris might possibly be God". - Review in The Guardian Newspaper

This is with thanks to the makers of this documentary by Brett Gaylor. It is not my own work AT All. In the spirit of the Manifesto though I totally ripped it from 'da-toob' because I cannot find the ripremix.com website mentioned in the intro. This video has a green line at the right because I want to include Brett's intro and was the only one I could find ... ... like or loathe the style, this is creativity ... If only I had the skills to do something of my own with it ... maybe you can? Be inspired.
With great thanks and respect to Brett Gaylor and 'Girl Talk'
