Having finished the ‘Top 100 Greatest Eurodance Hits’ countdown, I wanted to make my own favorites list from it as there were plenty that I didn’t agree with. And, yes, no matter how much I might have wanted to expand on things (like, where’s C+C Music Factory, Sonique, Rednex, Waldo's People, etc?), I did stick to just what was on that list already. To keep things fair though, I only allowed myself one song per artist/group to prevent the list from being overrun by songs from the same handful of acts. Also, just as a reminder: this numbering is not set in stone as is the case with all my personal lists.

Three songs were placed lower on my list than their original spots, but usually only by a few spaces. Most songs jumped several spots up though, with seven going 40 or more spaces higher than their original placements. My top pick went up 52 spots, the fourth highest increase, while the biggest jump was 76 - from 81 to 05.

Hello, all! No video last time because it’s tax and planting season, but all of that’s done/started now so it’s time to relax! To help with that, I decided to enjoy some outstanding instrumental tracks by Adrian Von Ziegler. He creates amazing songs with a wide variety of styles and genres, including Celtic, fantasy, pirate, Japanese, Nordic, Roman, emotional, and more.

The ones I’ve included here are not a “top ten list”, so they’re not in any order; rather, they are just a random collection of songs by him that I enjoy. I did try to balance things out though, with some old and some new, different styles, etc. Think of it as simply a small preview of his large body of work and definitely go check out his channel for more! Personally speaking, my favorite styles/genres of his are Celtic and emotional music, while my favorite song so far is Spheres.

On a side note, not only is he composer, he’s also created his own language (linked below). And, not just something basic either; he release an entire book featuring a dictionary, grammar, proverbs, and more, which I just think is so great being a world builder myself. He’s mentioned in his Q&A videos that his songs and albums do tell stories and/or correspond with tales he has in his head that he’d like to write down some day, but just hasn’t had the chance. You can still feel that in the music though; like, he’s mentioned not always wanting to put a name to a song because it can be really hard to convey things properly with just a short title and I definitely felt the same while trying to clip some of these song to just 20 seconds, so I greatly encourage you to check out the full songs as well!

Note: All images are directly from the corresponding videos on his channel. He provides linked credit in the description of each video, but for the sake of this video credit is as follows (in order of appearance): anndr, Z.W. Gu, Nat Vitchayed, Sakimori, Skyrim (the game), Peter Lee, Carina Grimm, Chris Cold, Aelathên, and Anato Finnstark.

This medley features Taehee’s solo album and is the last in my series on M.Pire (엠파이어), unless another member does some solo work or, by some miracle, they decide to release something again like M.Peror did recently.

The album was released on 180514, which before I started writing this all up, was several years after any real, concrete evidence that M.Pire was still together could be found. However, I have since been able to access their official fancafe (no clue why I forget to check it before lol) and found a post from 180601 that implies the group was still very loosely together at that point, but that members Red and T.O did official leave the group back in 2015 (to promote in China and to promote in Japan with B.Crown, respectively). It also stated that Haru was taking a break from the group to focus on other things and that, because Taehee was the first to be discharged from the military, he was granted this solo project.

But, given that 2018 was four years ago, nothing else mentioned by the company ever came to fruition (such as a sub-unit called Get2 featuring Jerry and Useung/Yooseung), and that Taehee (who has since changed his name to Ha Taebin) is the only member still listed on the company’s official website (and even that info is clearly outdated), I still maintain that it’s safe to assume they’ve 100% disbanded at this point. Like, Taehee announced he was changing his name via his instagram on 200803 and it has been updated on the company’s website, yet the last fancafe announcement was the 180601 post mentioned above. Clearly, the company has moved on.

Anyway, as for the album itself, while it does have five tracks, it only truly includes two songs. The title track ‘The Light’ comes in both Korean and Japanese with a regular and EDM Mix for both. The second song is called ‘사랑하는 게’. No music video was ever released for the title track as far as I’m aware and it also doesn’t seem like Taehee/Taebin got very far in a solo career either as this is his only release. The last update to his official youtube channel was only a little over a month later on 180626. Glancing thru his instagram, it does appear that he appeared on the show Mr. Trot in early 2020, but didn’t make it past the first audition. Aside from that, I can’t really be sure what he’s been up to lately.

Tracks Included:

1. The Light - There’s no MV, so here’s the Stage Mix included on his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngNgTmS6BfE
2. The Light (EDM Mix)
3. 사랑하는 게
4. The Light (Japanese)
5. The Light (Japanese EDM Mix)

Unfortunately, outside of the main title track, I could not find these songs uploaded anywhere.

Generally, I don’t make medleys where one already exists (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJfOu5bRw1o), but I’m biased on this one to the point that I actually helped fund both of these projects (you’ll find my name inside each album booklet), so I’m doing this to help Jeonyoul’s music reach as many people as possible. And, with that out of the way, let’s get into the actual music!

Her debut single, funded via the crowdfunding platform Makestar, was Mamacita and features a Latin vibe that very much fits with its title. The song is impressive, not only because it really showcases her talent/voice in a way that her former company never utilized while she was a member of Stellar, but also because of the message it sent being made in the first place.

For those who don’t know anything about the history of her group, Stellar, let’s just say their company was… nothing even remotely close to good. But, Jeonyoul still wished to continue and make music for the fans; and said fans supported her in droves, raising almost $8,500 more than her original asking goal. Part of it was to show that the fans (called Twinkles) still loved and supported Jeonyoul/Stellar and the other part was just a big middle finger to her/their former company. Basically, “You failed her, but we won’t.”

That sentiment (along with the sound of her first single) cared over into her second Makestar project, the Like It EP. This project gained almost $5,800 over her asking goal and gifted the world with 4 new songs that further demonstrated her abilities in not only singing, but song making as well (remember, she’s doing this on her own now, without a company behind her). While Mamacita is still definitely my favorite song of hers, Dangerous and Find the Light are both jockeying for second, with Bad and then Like It finishing things off.

My wish for the future is simply for Jeonyoul to be happy; and, if that means making more music, than you can be sure I’ll be there to show my support!

Sometimes referred to as ‘Let Go B-Sides’, depending on who you ask, this is either 1) a limited release promotional album put out in December of 2001 before her official debut with Let Go; or 2) a leaked demo tape that was used to preview Avril’s music between industry insiders before said debut. But, whatever its origins, this “album” features a lot of different and/or “unreleased” material. Some of the tracks serve as alternate versions of songs that would appear later in her discography, others were used as B-Sides to singles or on movie soundtracks, but most (11 of the 17 songs) were originals that never made it past this stage of production.

The 6 songs that did later get a proper release are I Don’t Give, Why, Get Over It, Take Me Away, Falling Down, and Things I’ll Never Say. The version of I Don’t Give on this album is an explicit one that was later “cleaned up” and used as a B-Side on her Complicated single, but this original version would also get its own official release later as part of the soundtrack to the movie American Wedding. Why was also sometimes used as a B-Side for the Complicated single and was the only B-Side included on her first live album, which makes sense as it’s an acoustic song. This album’s version of Get Over It, meanwhile, shared a similar fate to I Don’t Give - except, rather than being explicit, it was more… let’s say “direct” and reminds me of how Chic’s Freak Out was originally called Fuck Off. A more “refined” version would appear on her Sk8er Boi single as a B-Side.

Take Me Away, which fans will recognize as a song from the Under My Skin album, first appeared here in a very different manner. This album’s version, while similar in the chorus, sounds like two completely different tracks mashed together. Things I’ll Never Say (Matrix), on the other hand, is basically the same song that appears on the Let Go album proper, just with the music tweaked (Matrix here refers to a production team she was working with at the time). And, finally, while Falling Down never got released on an Avril album, it was included as part of the Sweet Home Alabama movie soundtrack.

But, as interesting as it is to here demo versions of songs, it’s the other 11 unused tracks that make this “album” unique. Released or leaked, it’s always fascinating (to me anyways) to see what artist’s work on that never makes the final cut. Headset, for example, wouldn’t be out of place mixed in with the summery pop songs on her self-titled fifth album, but that’s also probably why it was cut here. Likewise, Falling Into History, Tomorrow You Didn’t, Once and For Real, Not the Only One, Stay - Be The One, Move You Little Self On, and Let Go are all good tracks that could’ve easily been polished up and used on an album but weren’t for whatever reason.

On the other hand, there are also songs here that you can see (or hear, in this case) why they were dropped. You Never Satisfy Me is a perfect example of a similar song to the Take Me Away mentioned above that did not get a reworking into a more cohesive song. With Make-Up, though good song, it doesn’t really fit with the “image” they were pushing during her earlier years - aka a song about how she is comfortable in her skin and not wearing makeup doesn’t really work when her image was an angsty teen in a lot of makeup. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it very likely better describes her at that time, but corporate gonna corporate. Lastly, while All You Will Never Know is a really good song, it’s just much more of a country sounding song than anything pop-rock - like, I can easily see this as a Carrie Underwood song, you know?

Wrapping up, my personal favorites are Falling Into History (easily the best), I Don’t Give, Why, Get Over It, Falling Down, Tomorrow You Didn’t, All You Will Never Know, Stay - Be the One, and Move You Little Self On - Things I'll Never Say would technically go in here too, but I like the other version better. Headset and Once And For Real would follow them, with Make-Up, Not the Only One, and Let Go falling at the bottom of my likes list. You Never Satisfy Me and Take Me Away were the only ones I really didn’t take too, but that was largely because they came off as bad mashups to me (her other song titled Take Me Away is far superior to this one, so I’m glad they went with it instead).

Note: As this is a promotional/demo/leaked/whatever album rather than anything official, I just used random images for each song as well as the thumbnail since it’s more interesting than the original text list of songs that came with the album (which you can see in the video).

Track Listing: see comment section!

I remember when Head Above Water was released - the great comeback… that, unfortunately, featured far more discussion on how Avril was now loved (Head Above Water) and then hated (I Fell in Love with the Devil) by Christians, how she was “pulling a Kesha”, and so on than anything to do with her battle with Lyme Disease. And, even when they did talk about it, news channels called it a “health scare”, which to me, feels like downplaying things. Like, suffering from a debilitating chronic illness and having to literally fight with your doctors to be heard to the point that you’re ready to die is way more than a “hoo hoo you had a little health scare there didn’t you?” Now, my own issues with chronic illness is definitely coloring my perspective here, but I just really hate that term.

Anyways, this album feels like a proper follow up to Goodbye Lullaby. It doesn’t feel like Avril is trying to “reclaim” anything here or that the label is forcing her to do a bunch of random stuff - which makes sense as this is under a different label group than her earlier works. It also features way more of the growth that you can see starting to blossom in Goodbye Lullaby to the point that this whole album features a very different feel to it than her earlier works, a sense of maturity and depth of life that one would expect to see after someone has faced such a life changing illness/event.

As for the individual songs, anyone who more prefers her non-commercial pop stuff (as I do) will like this album. To me, there are no bad songs here. Sure, they’re not all perfect, but at the same time, a lot of that is simply personal taste. Like, a vocalization that I don’t like might be perfection to someone else. And, there are a lot of different styles on here too, so I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out just for that reason alone.

My personal favorites are Tell Me It’s Over (I adore this song) and Dumb Blonde. Following those two, in no particular order is Head Above Water, Goddess, Souvenir, It Was In Me, Crush, and Bigger Wow. I Fell in Love with the Devil almost fell into that grouping, but I like the first half a lot more than the second. Lastly, Birdie, Love Me Insane, and Warrior are all still good songs, but something had to be at the bottom and I simply preferred the other songs more.

M.Pire’s third single album, Rumor, was released on 140515. The title track is called “그런 애 아니야” and is usually written in English as “She’s Not Like That” or “Not That Kind of Person” (I couldn’t find a solid source one way or the other). The second track is called ”별이 되어...(0324)” and I’ve seen it listed in English most often as either “Becoming a Star” or “Be a Star”, but more official sources use “Even When I Close My Eyes”, so that’s what I went with. It was composed by member Lumin.

The last two songs in this medley are from 2 OSTs done by some of the members. The first, 사랑병 (Love Sick), was released for the drama ‘Hotel King’ on 140711 and featured members Lumin and T.O. There’s an ‘original’ and a ‘drama’ version for the song, but I only used the ‘original’ one for the medley as the ‘drama’ one is pretty much just an acoustic version. And finally, the last song, 좋은 날이야 (It’s a Good Day), was released for the drama ‘My Unfortunate Boyfriend’ on 150522 and featured Lumin along with Yoo Haenghoon of 7942 (칠구사이).

Aside from that, there really isn’t much more to include that wasn’t already mentioned in the first medley video I made on them. They did largely just fade away during this time period. Member Taehee went on to release a solo album in mid-2018 (which I will do a separate medley for), but that’s well after I feel the group had already disbanded. In the write-ups included for his album on Genie and Melon though, both do list him as a member of M.Pire and that the album was released during the time of the boy’s military enlistments. Does that mean M.Pire might still be together? Perhaps they might have “technically” still been together at that point (or it could have just been media play), but I very much doubt they still are now some 6 years after any concrete evidence of the group being together has been seen.

Note 1: While putting this video together, I saw that Lumin released a new single, 너를 담다, on 220112 that’s listed as ‘Black House's 2nd Project Album’. I didn’t include it in this medley because, if he is starting more of a solo career, than that should be in its own medley, but you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibETNXtwD0I

This album is in a weird spot for me chronologically; I think its fine on its own, but I also feel it would have worked better if released before Goodbye Lullaby. Let Go was full of teen angst and viewed things thru a more simplistic lens, Under My Skin was reality setting in and life getting complex, Best Damn Thing was scattered and unsure of what direction to go so it tried everything - like a midlife crisis, and finally, Goodbye Lullaby was stepping back and refocusing on the basics and positivity again. This album should be the next step of that journey, a new/fresh start, but instead it’s very nostalgia heavy (especially at the beginning) and has a strong “I want to be a summer pop queen” vibe (which doesn’t match the cover/booklet photos or its release date at all), yet at the same time, there’s also songs (especially at the end) that show clear growth and that the whole journey has had an impact.

But, despite the attempt to recapture the past and what made it great, that ‘edge’ and uniqueness from her other albums isn’t really there and, coming after an album like Goodbye Lullaby, it also feels like a step back as I feel that that one showed much more growth and depth than most of what is offered here. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people who complains when artists try new things or “change their sound”, I just feel it’s a bit off and kind of out of place when you’re listening to them all in a row like I am.

Moving on to the songs though, of the first four, Rock n Roll is my favorite. The others aren’t bad, but they specifically feel like 20-something summer campfire party songs, which is totally fine, but that does place them more on a specific playlist rather than a general one. Two songs further down, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet and Sippin’ on Sunshine, would have been better suited for this grouping as well.

The middle is the more “cooperate” stuff and it’s a jumbled mess of badly placed, but overall fine, songs. Let Me Go is great, but Avril’s vocals in the chorus are much, much louder than Chad’s and it sounds kind of weird. On a similar note, Bad Girl has Avril’s vocals echo-y as all hell and it ruins what could have been a really good song. Give You What You Like is fine, I just don’t see myself listening to it that often given the context. And then there’s Hello Kitty, which received a lot of hate from idiots who didn’t understand Avril or the purpose of the song and just labeled it at face value, but they’re ignorant pricks and, not only is it totally fine, but it’s also loved by those it was meant for - her Japanese fans.

Wrapping up the album is three final songs which are my favorites of the whole thing. Truly, if Avril released a whole album with songs like Hello Heartache, Falling Fast, and Hush Hush, I would be in heaven. Sure, I love a lot of her more pop stuff too, but these songs that really show off her vocals are just so much better in my eyes.

M.Pire (pronounced ‘empire’; a combination of ‘music' and 'vampire', signifying the need for the group to live off of music) debuted under Benjamin Entertainment (a sub-company under CMG Chorok Stars, which is sometimes listed as their company instead) on 130801 with the single album Carpe Diem and six members: Taehee, Useung/Yooseung, Haru, Red, T.O, and Jerry. A seventh member, Lumin (formerly LeeU of F.Cuz), join in October of the same year. Their fandom name was originally Fan.Pire, but due to negative feedback from fans, it was later changed to Muse (뮤즈), an acronym for ‘Mind, Understand, Special, and Encourage’.

They had their first official performance several months before they debuted at Dream Concert on 130511. Former member Kangon (see note below) is seen in that performance, but he left the group on 130615 and T.O was added in his place. The group also has two members (Taehee and Yooseung) of the disbanded group BB.BOYS.

The title (and only) track of Carpe Diem was ‘너랑 친구 못해’ (‘Can’t Be Friend With You’ is used official, but it’s sometimes listed as ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ or ‘I Can’t Be Friend With You’ unofficial). Their next album, New Born, was released on 131030 and featured three songs: ‘까딱까딱’ (I’m Better), ‘On My Mind’ (written by JYJ’s Jaejoong), and ‘너랑 친구 못해’ (which is the same song as before just rerecorded with Lumin’s voice). The last album featured in this video is T.O’s solo debut, 거짓말 (Lie), which was released on 131230.

Overall, M.Pire seemed to have gotten off to a strong start, winning several rookie awards and gaining buzz from their collaboration with JYJ’s Jaejoong, but nothing much happened next. I’ll finish off their discography in another video, but they basically just fizzled out thru 2014-2015 and then completely disappeared. In 2015, CMG Chorok Stars apparently announced M.Pire would be moving to LUCE Entertainment (another sub-company under them) and were actively denying disbandment rumors while several members started their military service and T.O promoted with a project group (B.Crown) in Japan. While fans were divided at the time over what was happening to the group, I think at this point, it's safe to say they quietly disbanded sometime in mid-late 2016 (based on T.O posting on his IG about the group making it to 900 days in January 2016).

Note 1: Kangon both left and then went back to the same group, M.Peror (엠페로 / ‘emperor’). Now, obviously, these two groups have long been confused with each other given their similar names, Kangon technically being a member of both, and apparently (although I’m not sure yet if it was official or not) M.Peror’s fandom name was M.Pire. But, seeing as Kangon was only in one performance with the group and it was before they officially debuted, I decided to just save M.Peror for a later video instead of trying to shove them in here.

Note 2: I’m not quite sure when the photos used for the two New Born songs were taken, but I had a really hard time finding good quality/decently sized pictures for this time frame of the group, so forgive me if they’re a bit off timeline wise.

BB.Boys, or Best of Best Boys, was a group under GilStar Entertainment (later moving to R.S Entertainment) that debuted on 110825 with three members: Taehee, Jino, and Siwoo. They only ever released one album, ‘First Album’ (sometimes listed as ‘Best of Best’ or ‘Best of Best: First Album’ because the album cover is confusing), with the title track ‘We Will Be Okay’ featuring G.Na (who was a big name at the time). They only went on to do one other song, for an OST, before disbanding sometime in 2012. I couldn’t really find any particular reason as to why, but I’m disappointed as both tracks on their debut were good and the one member who didn’t go on to do anything else, Siwoo, is the voice I liked most (you’re pretty much just hearing his voice in this medley as he does the choruses).

The other two members, Taehee and Jino, went on to join M.Pire, which was the group I was originally focusing on to do next, but I decided to give BB.Boys their own video because they had more than two songs.

This was the first album by Avril were I legit didn’t know any songs from it going in. Overall, the album is good (definitely better as a whole compared to her last album) and I do tend to like more of her toned down stuff, but I didn’t really connect with a lot of the songs on first listen for whatever reason. However, more than half of the songs did grew on me after that and some very rapidly, including Push, Wish You Were Here, Stop Standing There, I Love You, Everybody Hurts (my favorite song on this album), Not Enough, Darlin, Remember When, and Goodbye.

The more pop/commercial songs, What the Hell and Smile, both have great choruses, but I’d take Girlfriend any day of the week over the rest of those two. 4 Real is the only song I’m really middle of the road on, and Black Star is an intro track, so it kinda doesn’t count. Alice, the bonus track, was the only song I really didn’t like.

I was going to post this yesterday, but we lost power... such is my luck right now... ugh.

Girls Girls released their first song on 151208, but celebrate their anniversary on 151209 as it marks their first appearance on a music show. That’s not the only bit of confusion that surrounds their beginnings though. Given how the text is written on the cover of their first album, the title has been listed as ‘Strong Girls’, ‘Deal’, or all together as ‘여자여자 Deal first single album Strong Girls’. Along with that, there is also some confusion over their first title track as well given that there’s an original and a ‘new version’; but, from what I can find, the only thing different about them is some lyrics changes. I couldn’t find why they changes things up, but as the only MV that exists is for the new version and it was released much later on 160328, my guess is they simply changed a few things up when they were finally able to shooting the MV.

As for the group itself, I don’t actually know a lot about them other than they didn’t get very far and I have a sneaky suspicious it may have been a case of favoritism for member Miso. Around late 2018-early 2019, fans knew something was up based on several of the member’s instagram activities, but the final nail in the coffin was when the company’s new website became a Miso solo page not long after she announced her departure from the group, which was in February and she then came back with another solo release just nine days later (she had already had two prior solo releases as a member of Girls Girls in 2017). Rina had also announced she would be debuting as a soloist a few months before that, but a couple months after Miso’s release, she said she was “starting anew” and fans took that to mean she had left the group and the company.

Gyurang was the first to announce her departure from the group though, leaving between the first and second single. She went on to become the soloist Budy. And, while I generally include solos with the group’s medley, Gyurang/Budy and Miso have done enough songs each to warrant their own, so look out for those in the future!

Here’s round 2 of KPop groups that only released one song - all girls again because they’re just more likely to be in this category unfortunately. Purplay suffered from a (confirmed) plagiarized choreo controversy and extremely lackluster results. The Ark’s disbandment was most likely due to a lack of funds and is considered one of the biggest wastes of talent in KPop - side note: the MV is a homage to the Sewol Ferry disaster. 4L received extreme backlash for their overtly sexual concept and queerbaiting, which caused one of the member’s to quickly exit. She later stated that they were not forced into anything by the company, but rather were just doing what they needed to in order to survive (in the oversaturated market). I-Ren just sort of fell off the map, I couldn’t really find anything about them. Ye-A presumably disbanded because their company was bought by another and like half the members had their contracts terminated (or something like that).

Before doing this medley, I only really knew 3 songs from this album (Girlfriend, When You’re Gone, and Keep Holding On). I might have heard the others once or twice, but for the most part, this was basically my first listen. And, after hearing it, I’m not really impressed with this as an album. It’s not that it’s bad per se (the songs are still generally fine overall), it just seems scattered and definitely not one of her best, even though two of her best songs (according to me) are on it. The track listing has powerful ballads, clearly manufactured by corporate “basic bitch” pop songs, “I’m the best/don’t mess with me” punk, and some other things all thrown together with seemingly no rhyme or reason and it just doesn’t feel like it flows very well to me.

As for the songs themselves, Keep Holding On and When You’re Gone will always be my favorites, with Girlfriend coming in third. Runaway and Innocence are new the songs I enjoyed the most as they touched most on what I liked about her first two albums. Contagious, One of Those Girls, and Alone are also good. I Will Be wasn’t bad, but I didn’t quite like it as much as the previous three. The Best Damn Thing and Hot were too “corporate” for me on first listen, but they’ll probably grow on me later. And, lastly, I Can Do Better, Everything Back But You, and I Don’t Have to Try just weren’t for me.

I admit I know nothing about this group outside of what I’ve read on fan blogs, but apparently they’re known as “welfare-dols” for their work with children, students, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and other underprivileged groups - which is pretty awesome. They started out with a couple cute songs and then announced plans to enter the international market with a completely revamped look and sound, but ultimately things ground to a halt for them because of everything surrounding covid. Whether or not they’re actually disbanded though seems to be a bit of a gray area. At first, the news was that they had, but then the company said “no no, we just dissolved their contracts, but they’re totally still a group and stuff…” As it stands right now, three of the members are apparently still “promoting” as a group (though not under any contract as far as I know), but I haven’t seen or heard anything more about them actually coming back yet so who knows…?

Recently, I went thru my backlog of “top 100 rap songs for insert year” and I… only gained a headache lol so, for this video, I thought It would be fun to explore some of my old favorite rap/hip hop songs growing up. Now, I’m sure I can already guess the comments: “basic”, “mainstream”, “that’s ‘whatever’, not rap!” blah blah waa waa you’re right I don’t care. Just enjoy the songs that my… 12? 13? 14? year old mind latched onto and thought was great rap/hip hop lol xD
