There are a number of fungi and mycobacteria (a.k.a. opportunistic fungi) that grow naturally on tobacco. Tobacco Control Studies have shown fungal and mycobacterial (opportunistic fungi) spores in the exhale of smokers. Fungi, mycobacteria, bacteria and oomycetes grow naturally on tobacco. The tobacco leaves containing these pathogens are not discarded. Instead they are cured and ground up and used in the production of cigarettes.
When a smoker inhales smoke into their lungs they inhale these spores. Some are embedded in the patients lungs where they begin proliferating very slowly. It generally takes decades before causing serious medical issues thereby resulting in the diagnosis of COPD.
