"Smile, you son of a bitch!"

I try to shoot "The Helsby Rifle" every year of the Cabin Fever Challenge. The M1 Garand is a rifle that I have adored since I was a kid but have never successfully mastered. The M1 Garand made a GIANT impression on me when Roy Scheider wielded one in the 1975 movie JAWS.

I haven't been feeling great lately but the fresh air and sunshine did me good. Maple Leaf Up

"To Live is to Die" Metallica (Justice for All)
I found a moment of solace during the weekend. I haven't been feeling well with back to back flu bugs and fevers. The house was quiet and I've had this song occupying my thoughts for the last two or three weeks. I had to put a stop to it by forcing myself to learn this guitar riff. This recording is after a 30 minute learning session. I'm basically stumbling through through the song but at least now I'm motivated to install a new set of strings on the old 1980's Yamaha G-255-SII. I've let the strings go far too long and they're dark.

The G-255 has a two piece mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, rosewood back and sides, solid cedar top and her second set of after-market tuning knobs. I think this line of Yamaha classical guitar comes from the mid-1980's and the quality of the materials is excellent.

This guitar has had a bone nut and saddle fitted and both were hand-filed to perfect intonation using an oscilloscope. A tiny lace pickup has been installed under the saddle (with no pre-amp).

I'll say this about Metallica... They are the last of the "Super Bands".

I've had this old Yamaha for 27 years now and I feel very fortunate to be her custodian. One day I'll be nothing but dust but hope another worthy soul will eventually get to be this G-255's care taker.

Thank you and have a great safe year everyone!

We lost Perry to a Coyote. She was getting old, her hips weren't working like they used to and she spent most of her time in bed. An old cat but an excellent mouser. Perry wasn't a particularly loving cat but she was an amazing hunter. Good bye Perry. You were a good cat.

It's a good time

Opportunities come from the strangest places and at the most unexpected times. I always grow the most as a person when I have dared to try something new. People with knowledge tend to have less fear because their comprehension of the world comes from a broader experience base. Experienced people usually chomp at the bit to expand their knowledge and they certainly don't try to shut people up because someone said something offensive.

Those without worldly experience, a desire to learn or to improve their situation typically become bitter, entitled and malevolent. This describes a growing trend of civil unrest in society that causes everyone widely accepted concern.

Seizing: To take hold of suddenly or forcibly; grasp: to grasp mentally; understand clearly and completely: to seize an idea. to take possession of by force or at will: seized the crowd.

There are some elite marksmen out there and it is no mistake why they own that reputation. I am proficient enough to recognize how much personal investment they have dedicated to this craft.

What I discuss in this video is a breakdown the dataset procured through the management of seven years of Cabin Fever Challenge Competitions. How do participants know where their marksmanship measures within any specific population? This video attempts to identify some key considerations within the confines of a small but international competitive shooter population.

I'm please to say that the Cabin Fever Challenge is doing what it was designed to do. CFC was created to inspire people to develop and improve their marksmanship and this has now been proven mission successful time and time again over the last seven years. The competition is now international with competitors from USA, SWEDEN, FINLAND & CANADA.

Thank you for watching.

An early view into BREDA Garand #274 henceforth known as 'THE HELSBY RIFLE'. 'THR' will now be a regular cast member on the Riflechair.com Channel.

In this episode we take on the 2021 Cabin Fever Challenge (closes March 31st 2021) https://www.facebook.com/cabinfeverchallenge

If you're in Canada and you're interested in your own M1 Garand build contact Richard and he will set you up. This guy is brilliant.

The biggest problem with buying a used M1 Garand is that you don't really know what you’re going to get. The headspace might be bad, there may be dangerous pitting under the wood (Which is quite common) or the springs might be completely work out.

Even with good headspace, there’s the question of Muzzle and throat erosion. How bad is it? Garands used ammo that was corrosive, and there are a lot of barrels out there that are worn excessively. Heslby tries to use USGI barrels when he can and he won't use anything worse than Throat or Muzzle Erosion reading of 2. There are so many that are 6 and 7.

Like most surplus firearms Garands tend to get neglected and abused. It is still fairly common to find ¼” of cosmoline under the wood and a completely worn out barrel. Some are so badly pitted they are dangerous to shoot.

IF you buy used I recommend you find someone who can look it over and recondition it so these nasty little surprises don’t raise their ugly head after you get it home.

With new builds like this (or a reconditioned rifle) you know exactly what you’re getting. Helsby sells completely rebuilt Garands with Italian receivers and this is far cheaper than you can get a USGI Garand for in rough shape. Mainly because of the price of receivers. 650-850 US for a USGI receiver, vs 50-100 CDN for an Italian receiver. In the case of those built by Richard Helsby they have been completely gone through and gauged, and refinished before they are offered for sale.

As far as performance, the Italian guns are far better built.
Something to Ponder.

You can contact Richard Helsby at [email protected]

Get away from your computer for a few days. The world is a crazy place so it's OK to unplug.

Maybe read a book, play a board game, cook some wieners over a campfire, play a board game, listen to some music and then play another board game.

We only have one life.

Unless you're a Benchrest shooter why zero from a bench?

These are amongst the first rounds out of this M1 Garand and I frequently glance up to visually verify the lugs are properly seated. I always do this with gas guns until I start to build more confidence. This serial is part of a break in process for a newly refurbished Italian Beretta M1 Garand. The rifle smelled good too.

This video might help people to choose what kind of steel they need for the desired type of shooting. It unfortunately won't be of much use to Cimerian Barbarians trying to interpret the teachings of Crom.

Shooting at steel is not only a convenient way to determine your zero at various distances but it's also fun for new shooters who get immediate feedback when they connect.

As I've discovered dumping a truckload of birch wood on your heavy steel gong is a bad idea. I've been without this steel gong for 1.5 years and I'm pretty relieved to have this piece of steel back and in working order.

This video is dedicated to the chap that donated and mailed this piece of steel to me. The cost alone to ship this steel had to have been high. My marksmanship has definitely benefited from having access to steel and it has helped to remain inspired to continue making these shooting videos.

I would also like to recognize my Patreon supporters because it is through their support that I have been able to acquire components needed to manufacture my own shooting accouterments. Without this 'stuff' making musketry videos would be difficult.

If you need a REFURBISHED No4 magazine that hasn’t been hacked by Bubba then what are you waiting for? This mag has what appears to be a brand new spring in it and I suspect the spring was manufactured in Italy perhaps. It works perfectly well but it is not a Commonwealth made spring.

Also the interesting phosphate finished follower is attached to the spring using slightly larger than normal rivets. The magazine body is definitely ROF Fazakerley (Royal Ordnance Factory) Liverpool UK. I wager you might possibly find LONG BRANCH, Savage, POF, BSA mag bodies from the Italian supply as well (but can’t verify that).

The bottom line is this...
Without a good magazine your Enfield will not run well. The mag is the Achilles Heel of the Lee Enfield. Good Enfields won’t run with bad mags.

The magazine is super cool
Thank you ITALY but more importantly Maple Leaf Up to the folks at TEC Tradex Canada Inc. and the other innovative companies that brought these in!

The powerful .348 Winchester is an American rifle cartridge that was introduced in 1936 and developed for the Winchester Model 71 lever action rifle.

The Model 71 was conceived as a replacement for both the Model 1886 and Model 1895 as a complement to the Winchester Model 70 bolt-action rifle and to replace a raft of cartridges (the .33 Winchester, the .45-70, the .35 Winchester, and the .405 Winchester) with just one (the .348 Winchester).

In this video my long time pal Blowback gives us an introduction to this fantastic specimen.
NOTE: Those Nosler 220gr monolithic solids are hitting low on the 6" steel - not where indicated in the video. Hots are the copper coloured smudges on the steel.

This might be the shortest review ever but I made a huge leap today and I did my homework.
This MS-391 is configured with a 24" bar with STD 3/8" chain
This saw sure pulls you into the wood compared to that old STIHL MS-170.

My production has, at a minimum, doubled and the saw's extra weight is balanced nicely by the longer bar.
I'm not leaning over anymore and although the 391 is heavier my back isn't hurting as much after a few tanks of fuel.
The chips are also cast / dispersed way back compared to the old MS-170.

After several years of not checking my own emergency response gear I decided to run a drill. Murphy's Law says that if something can go wrong - it will. Test your equipment - Mine failed.

Not only was my emergency food expired but my MS Whisper-lite was leaking fuel. Thankfully I have a local source for MSR parts. I'm not sure if this MSR should be relegated to second tier reliability but It was super handy when I rucked all my winter gear in and out. It's definitely not met this particular test. They are tricky stoves and practice makes perfect.

The old Coleman never seems to fail but you can hear it is having trouble breathing until it got hot. Once that happened it ran like a top. I should probably test my gear more frequently. Good test . My redundancy plan is now my #1 plan.

My forecast is that the 2020/21 winter is going to involve a lot of snow in the Pacific Northwest of BC. It has essentially rained for four months straight and we had no forest fires. 60% of BC's forest fighting forces are currently helping our brothers and sisters in the USA. When they return they will need to remain isolated for 14 days. Then the next wave goes over. The situation is very strange indeed but not particularly rare up here.

Firewood burning technology however has come a very long way and we should be looking at it differently now. If we actually want to build a green society then we need to cut fire breaks within urban / forest interface areas. Why not use wood heat as a modern mechanism and give that wood a market value? We facilitate strategic level fire breaks, make home heating more affordable and lower fossil fuel emissions? This might not work in all situations but why not look to the past to rediscover the future?

Particulate discharge for new wood stoves, equipped with a secondary combustion chambers have dramatically reduced due to this new technology. When burning good quality fuel combined with the cleanest emissions of any stove of its size I say HELL YEAH! We have been a client of Blaze King wood stoves for many years now.

Of the 767 Enfield Enforcers that were manufactured only about 380 survive today. Those rifles that were not surplused were destroyed. That makes the Enfield Enforcer one of the most collectible and rare enfields in existence today.
