High cost of regulation makes housing in Canada unaffordable
Hardly anyone disagrees that housing prices and rents have been unaffordable in Canada for decades, but there’s agreement about why housing prices have moved out of step with incomes.
A recent report by think-tank C.D. Howe Institute analyzed housing prices and construction costs and concluded that excessive regulatory burden contributes to prices being much higher than the cost of producing new dwellings. The gap should not exist or be small in competitive markets with little or no undue regulatory burdens, but that’s not the case in Canada.
The report estimated that the price of single-family detached housing in Vancouver was $1.3 million more than the cost of producing the same house in a market without excessive regulatory barriers. In Toronto, the gap was $350,000. Stated differently, single-family detached housing prices in Vancouver were 60 per cent higher than the cost to build such homes.

Here’s who will get the one-time payment and when Canadians will receive the one-time grocery rebate as early as July 5, the federal government said Thursday.
In a statement, the government said the grocery rebate will be delivered to eligible Canadians on that date, by direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency.

The idea is laid out in a new bill being considered by lawmakers, which was written in response to the deadly mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school where 19 kids and two teachers were killed last year.
House Bill 13 would pay teachers or other school staffers to start packing heat at public and open-enrollment charter schools, but they would be required to take firearms and mental health training as well as learning first aid.

Alberta granted permission to intervene in gun lawsuits against Canada
The fight over gun laws in Canada will see Alberta go to court against Ottawa as intervenors in half a dozen lawsuits against legislation that bans hundreds of models of firearms.
In September, the province made the application to intervene in six ongoing cases on non-constitutional issues.
That request was not opposed by the federal government, and on Wednesday, it was granted by the court.

It collects $1.7 billion each year from the federal government to promote its left wing ideological objective which most definitely does not reflect the views of most Canadians. It does so, even though the Broadcasting Act, which was updated in September, 2018, specifically states in Section 3(l)(i) that broadcasters are required to provide a balance of information and in Section 3(l)(iv) that the CBC must provide a reasonable opportunity for the Canadian public to be exposed to differing views on matters of public concern. The CBC is operating outside its mandate.

Province passes Sask. Firearms Act unanimously
On Thursday, the province passed the Saskatchewan Firearms Act, a law that will make it harder for police to seize firearms.
The act passed its final reading at the legislature unanimously with all members present voting in favour. The act is now law.
Firearms enthusiasts were at the legislative building to join the provincial government in opposition to the federal ban on assault style firearms, which is supposed to take effect this fall.
