I recently spent a weekend in Phoenix and took the opportunity to explore some driving routes in the Driveline App. This one was a very chill, relaxing road that I ran backwards because of the previous two routes, it just made sense.

I recently spent a weekend in Phoenix and took the opportunity to explore some driving routes in the Driveline App. This one was a very technical, one-lane, dirt road with sweeping vistas (for your passenger, not you) and some stunning overlooks to catch your breath.

I recently spent a weekend in Phoenix and took the opportunity to explore some driving routes in the Driveline App. This one was a very tight, technical road with a lot of load speed corners. A car in front of me learned all about understeer as they missed the corner and went into the ditch.

This is a great backroad blast along the Little Spokane River. Find this drive on the Driveline App.

This is a short, scenic overlook cruise along the rim of the South Hill in Spokane. Find this drive on the Driveline App.

From the Spokane Valley up Forker Road and then Highway 206 to the top of Mt. Spokane. Discover Pass is required for the three or so short months the entire route is open. The last couple of miles are closed when snow is present as they are part of snowmobile and ski runs.

Find this route on the Driveline App. From Plummer, ID toward St. Maries and then north on Highway 97 to Harrison, ID. This is a nice combination of sweep curves and tight, technical corners with some stunning scenery.

Find this route on the Driveline App. From Harrison Idaho on Highway 97 toward St. Maries and then north on Highway 3 toward I-90 following the St. Joe River and along Rose Lake and Blue Lake. This is primarily a route with sweeping curves and short straights as it winds through the valley following the river and skirting lakes.

From I-90 just east of Coeur d'Alene Idaho, south on Highway 97 to Harrison Idaho. A tight corner, curving technical road along the lake with gorgeous scenery and smooth asphalt. Find the full route on the Driveline App for iOS.

Some scenes while searching Silver Mountain, Idaho for geocaches and just enjoying the beauty.

This is another one of my favorite roads, the White Pine Scenic Byway (Hwy 3) in North Idaho. Running south from I-90 between Fourth of July Pass and Kellogg Idaho, this rural highway runs a valley in the foothills of the Rockies and hugs several lakes. It is not only scenic, but also a really good rivers road with very little traffic.

A random thought about rally cars and roads, just because.

The Car Confidence Factor (CCF - I really need to figure out a catchy name for this) is my attempt at standardizing claims of how cars perform. It’s not super-scientific, it’s more engineered-guesstimate, however, I’m trying to take what reviewers say, and what I would think of a car, and apply certain factors to know how good it is. Check out my previous video on the calculation, this is about the driving route.

Thanks to David Fesliyan for the background music titled The Chase of My Life

What makes a car confidence inspiring? Can it be boiled down to key design features such as which are the drive wheels or where the engine is? Even if these don’t control confidence, what impact do they have on that sense of confidence that builds in your gut? I’ve been wondering about this and how to take a subjective thing like the feeling of confidence and making it more objective and being able to compare that across cars. Here are my first thoughts on this.

Designed, engineered, tested, refined and then manufactured resulting in a very well balanced, finely tuned performance machine; the factory built car is a known quantity and is consistent. At the other end of the spectrum is the home-built kit car, drawing drivetrain and other parts from a donor car and marrying it to a kit chassis and body panels. This car is almost anything you want it to be, but well balanced and finely tuned is all up to you. In between are the modified cars, taking something really good and making it better suited to what you want. Where do you sit in this spectrum? I’m trying to answer that very question as I get ready to purchase my first fun sports car.

The Constitution of the United States of America guarantees our access to sports cars, SUV’s, trucks, sedans and hot hatches! What you say? No it doesn’t? Oh most assuredly it does in that it protects our private property rights and sets forth the foundations of a free market economy. But with this great privilege there is also great responsibility, both financially in owning, operating and maintaining the car but it behaving responsibly. Let’s celebrate the rights enumerated in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights this Independence Day, but let’s also celebrate our freedoms which allow each gear head and enthusiast to pursue their passion.

The STAR (Spokane Trails and Railroads) Challenge, a geocaching challenge sponsored by Cache Advance. This was the summer 2018 challenge which I just picked up and did. The problem with doing a challenge this late is that some of the caches are now deactivated. Good practice for their upcoming FUN Challenge though. I hope you enjoy this video and all the cool caches they placed. Follow me on Instagram (@roadcache) for realtime updates.

Combine dual hobbies of geocaching and a love for driving. Geocaching has been a way to document the cities and states I’ve visited. Now I hope to expand this into more intentional road trips. These trips will include geocaching games as well as discussions about what car would be ideal for the trip.

Am I crazy to even consider building a kit car? I’m considering a kit car that’s described as less refined than a Lotus Elise? How much would this cost to build after configuring the kit for my intent, buying the donor car and then buying upgraded parts to replace worn items or make the car handle well? Let’s take a look.

Am I crazy to even consider building a kit car? I’m a GT car type of guy; performance with great handling that can go the distance. So why even consider a kit car that’s described as less refined than a Lotus Elise? Well, my son who is studying to be a mechanic at UTI came up with the idea. What do you think, compromise on what I really want or build the project car?
