Anne Webster happily listening along to Ebbi Baldursson of Eyjatours (https://www.eyjatours.com/) share on the puffins that visit Storhofdi on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. Heimaey is the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. The archipelago is also known as the Westman Islands. Ebbi leads a popular tour there called 'Puffin and Volcano' (https://www.eyjatours.com/puffin-and-volcano-tour).

On a recent visit to Deauville, France in Normandy, we were fortunate to spend time with Gilbert Hamel, who spent an afternoon sharing World War II stories from Deauville with us. At the end of WWII, he was a boy of 14. Here he shares his memories with us of the Canadian soldiers, who came in the sweep for mines.

We've been researching the World War II and the Normandy Campaign for a documentary project, and are very appreciative to Gilbert Hamel for taking the time to share with us, and to inDeauville for setting up this meeting for us, and to Sandrine Chardon for taking us on a tour of Deauville's WWII history and translating for us.

Deauville is a seaside resort town and port on the English Channel rich in culture, history, and sport. You can lean more about it here: https://www.indeauville.fr/

This box breathing exercise, also known as square breathing, is meant to be followed along and breathed to, but can be done by drawing or imagining your own 'air square' wherever you are. A slow and mindful breath helps to slow down the pace of an anxious mind.

Let the slow motion of floating balloons bring about a zen-like lightness for yourself. This video is meant to be watched in a few different ways. First, watch this meditative balloon drop for its own immersive quality. Next, watch it again while slowly counting how many white balloons you see. Then watch it again to count how balloons you see with confetti inside, and finally, watch it to count how many gold balloons you see. In this way, you bring about a single minded focus for your mind, giving it a break from being so busy!

Embarrassed to share that this year marked our first ever adventures at the Vancouver Christmas Market, but after discovering vendors from around the world, we've now enjoyed a few adventures around the globe at the Vancouver Christmas Market. Our first tale from the 2018 Vancouver Christmas Market is Part 1 on the Wood Crafts of Seiffen in the German Erzgebirge in Saxony, Germany.

These tales of the talented wood crafts people of Seiffen, Germany were shared with us by Charmain Lardner at Das Nutcracker Haus at the 2018 Vancouver Christmas Market. This stall is hosted by the Hoffman Company, featuring folk art from the German Erzgebirge. The wood craftsman that Charmain mentions in this video is Christian Ulbricht.

Following the Grease Trail: BC's Nass Valley - Then & Now, is the latest story that has been titillating of synapses. As such, we are pitching it in the Storyhive Documentary Edition.

------------------------------------------

For more of a tease on what's to come, here is the synapsis:

Sparked by the oil of one small fish, the Pacific Northwest’s first highways and settlement corridors were established. This was a fish (the eulachon) that on occasion held the balance between the life and death of communities in it’s oil, and it now struggles for it’s own survival, listed as endangered in many of it’s once rich spawning grounds in the Pacific Northwest, in turn impacting the cultures of the indigenous communities whose way of life evolved around this fish and it’s valuable oil that created the Grease Trails of the Pacific Northwest. Travelling those routes today, we exploring BC’s indigenous knowledge and culture, and see how the First Nations communities along the Grease Trails have changed. We begin our journey starting with one of the healthiest eulachon spawning grounds in the heart of the Nisga’a territory in BC’s Nass Valley. Here the Seasons revolve around the traditional harvest cycles, and the Nisga’a New Year, Hobiiyee, is kicked off every year in February with the return of the eulachon to spawn in the mighty Nass River. It is here that our story begins.

Happy Holidays! With love from our family to yours.

We hope you are getting a chance to unwind, slow down and relax this holiday season.

Nothing like undressing, kissing and hugging to get to know something better, especially when that 'something' is nature. Nature and natural healing on Salt Spring Island is exactly what Cornelia Krikke introduced me to in Episode 4 of Season 1, #NaturallySaltSpring, of Naturally Ours (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpV4uIM1kg4&list=PL3A91ZSWvSVUcu8R38xrg9Foc4I5id-5b)-5b)!

In this episode of Naturally Ours, Erica is in a state of relaxed bliss as she gets a little more intimate with the natural world on Salt Spring Island, thanks to Cornelia Krikke. Cornelia teaches Erica all about our connections with nature from meditating in trees to grounding in the Earth. Erica may even get a little carried away, sharing more than one kiss with a tree.

In this episode of Naturally Ours, Erica is in a state of naturalist bliss as she gets to discover more about one of her favourite forest creatures on Salt Spring Island the owl. She is not alone in this love, as the owl is featured in many Salt Spring Island artists' work and Erica is fortunate enough to be invited into the studio of Salt Spring Wool Arts, and watch Aki Otsu craft his beautiful birds. The night wouldn't be complete though, without a little owl prowl of her own with Glen Tremblay at Cusheon Lake. They might even teach you how to call a Barred Owl.

In this episode of Naturally Ours, we visit British Columbia's oldest work farm, Ruckle Heritage Farm, where we are met with beauty of place, love of the residents, and depth of understanding from farmer and caretaker, Mike Lane. Mike's understanding of ecosystems, carbon cycles, and maintaining a sustainable footprint on Ruckle Heritage Farm far exceeds that of many who study the environmental science. Why? Because he is intimately familiar with the land and the animals he works with and cares for everyday. We learned so much from him, in our brief visit.

Hwiemtun welcomes us to the Coast Salish Territory and shares the importance of reconnecting with the land, because as his Uncle reminds us, we are all Indigenous to somewhere in the world. This connection to the land is something Briony explores from the perspective of the member of a family who were settlers on Salt Spring Island and the need for reconciliation to move forward.
