Lee began his Detroit record store (Lee's Monroe Music… ca. 1959-1984 [Lee renamed it "Lee's" after taking over the store some years in {Lee started as its manager}]) four years after Charlie Parker (1920-1955) died. "Old Folks" by Charlie Parker was one of the songs that first turned Lee on to the genre of Jazz. Lee Canady would LOVE to record his own version of the song, "Old Folks," complete with his own personalized lyrics. I hope to get an arrangement and record him singing this timeless track as soon as possible. This video is my near, dear pal, Lee, listening to a song he asked me to print the lyrics from for him, because (just like Frank Sinatra's "My Way") Lee told me he had a strong urge to sing this song his own way just like Lee's "My Way" "Lee's way" (as I like to say). I hope you enjoy this video. Since Lee and I are commentating Charlie Parker (etc. in his way of life) over this wonderful tune by Charlie Parker, really the copyright claim ought to be lifted for Fair Use reasons, but hey, what could someone like me do up against the likes of whoever is claiming this video now as their own over this inclusion of a song not recorded by them?

Big Band is a 1954 album by Charlie Parker of sides recorded in 1950 and 1952.[3] In 1999 Big Band was reissued with bonus material and outtakes.[3]

Stacia Proefrock reviewed the reissue of the album for Allmusic and wrote that these "Though Joe Lipman's arrangements are stellar, the musicians assembled for the sessions are an odd mix of Popular Music big-band players and improvisers. The album en todo also suffers from the Popular Music style of the songs themselves: solos are kept short, and songs limited to a three-minute length that was both radio-friendly and compatible with the 78-rpm format. But when Parker does solo, it is just as magical as any of his earlier recordings. The songs also have a sweet smoothness to them that makes them eminently enjoyable although jazz variety is lacking. This record is not perfect, but it still musters up moments of brilliance".[3]

Lee Canady is an all-American man. Berry Gordy bought the house that became Hitsville USA in 1959, the same year Lee Canady started Monroe Music (later "Lee's Monroe Music" when Lee's boss left) with a Jewish lady from a rich New York family. Berry Gordy walked into Lee's record store and asked Lee advice on selling records, and Lee sold Berry's first albums. Berry personally invited Lee to the very first Motown concert. Oh, and Lee talks lots about Michael Jackson too. This video has it all!

What would Al Green want to do in a record store in Detroit? Meet pretty girls. Al Green hit on the pretty girls at Lee's Monroe Music EVERY Saturday.

Did you ever hear tell of the great lady, named Anita Baker? Well, she shopped at Lee's Monroe Music. She remains a legend and still resides in Detroit to this day.

I can say that Lee Canady was Michigan's first black record store owner. Others came before Lee, yes, but Lee's was the first LEGAL record store (Lee paid taxes and bought records direct from the manufacturer [Lee was the first black record store owner in America to buy records in bulk direct from the manufacturer {the Detroit City Council in 2011 issued a Testimonial Resolution declaring and confirming this historic fact about Mr. Canady}])

Also, record shops (what we might call not-above-board shadows of above-board record stores) often sold stolen records (one can imagine that rampant theft drove up the price of records worldwide)

Lee led a respectable business. Lee paid his dues and even paved new routes along his way. Yes, Lee might say, "I did it My Way."

We still need to record that together. As of the writing of this blurb or description or sneeze of words, Lee and I are soon planning to record us covering Frank Sinatra's "My Way." I hope that goes well!

The resultant gutted Detroit that continued worsening ever after is now a dark shadow of its former beaming glory. Detroit once was a major city that seriously rivaled New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and the rest of America's metropolises. Now Detroit hopes to be compared to any of those towns favorably at all. 1967 Detroit effectively ended its own life (to this day) with that riot.

At the time of the 1967 Detroit Race Riot, Lee had to get a new sport suit pressed at the dry cleaners around the corner from Lee's home. This sport jacket was the nicest Lee had ever bought to that point in his life, so he was eager to finally wear it. Lee heard about the riots kicking up and decided to rush to get his suit, pants, and several dress shirts (Lee had all his shirts in rotation at the cleaners) before the looters reached the cleaners. Alas, Lee came upon the dry cleaning business to find folks smashing it in and running out with everyone else's clothes, including Lee's brand-new, never-worn sport jacket!

You would not believe it—Lee lived through the 1967 Detroit Race Riot (and Lee has a story from the event to boot!)! Lee just wows and amazes. This is the first time Lee has said this story in Mexicantown (I guarantee it). It is fascinating digging back through Lee's life. Besides covering tales of music, Lee's life has sensational stories of historic proportions. The great thing about Lee's stories is that one would consider them all illusions if it was anyone else in them. Lee's life was wild, but the man himself more than matched the bounds of its ups and downs.

Lee Canady was the first black record store owner in all of the great nation of America to buy records in bulk direct from the manufacturer. This bulk buying gave Lee a seat at the table with record companies as well as radio stations, so that meant Lee could say what played on the radio and what tracks were A-sides or B-sides.

In addition to all of that, Lee was also an amateur artist, painting a self-portrait in oil.
