About the former National Anthem of Kazakhstan:

The National Anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazakh: Қазақстан Республикасының Мемлекеттік Әнұраны / Qazaqstan Respwblıkasynyŋ Memlekettik Änurany) is the title of the former national anthem of Kazakhstan used from 1992 to early 2006. Upon independence in December 1991, the melody of the Kazakh SSR anthem – composed by Muqan Tölebaev, Yevgeny Brusilovsky and Latıf Hamıdı – was retained; and new lyrics were adopted in 1992 after a lengthy competition. The lyrics were written jointly by four people including poet Jadyra Daribaeva, one of only a handful of women to have ever been involved in writing a national anthem.

About the current National Anthem of Kazakhstan:

Menıŋ Qazaqstanym (Менің Қазақстаным | English: 'My Kazakhstan') is the national anthem of Kazakhstan, adopted on 7 January 2006. It is based on a homonymous song written in 1956 composed by Shamshi Kaldayakov and written by Jumeken Najimedenov. This replaced the former anthem used after independence, which followed the melody of the anthem of the Kazakh SSR. The original lyrics were modified by president Nursultan Nazarbayev before the decree was issued. This song is based on a Kazakh patriotic song of the same name written in 1956 in response to the Soviet Virgin Lands program. There is debate over whether it was to celebrate the program or to insist Soviet authorities should not turn Kazakhstan into Russia's corn belt.

Tavisupleba (Georgian: თავისუფლება | English: Freedom) is the national anthem of Georgia. It was adopted as the Georgian national anthem in May 2004, along with a new national flag and coat of arms. The symbols' change was brought about upon the successful overthrow of the previous government in the bloodless Rose Revolution. The music, taken from the Georgian operas Abesalom da Eteri (Abesalom and Eteri) and Daisi (The Nightfall), by the Georgian composer Zacharia Paliashvili (ზაქარია ფალიაშვილი), was adapted to form it by Ioseb Kechakmadze (იოსებ კეჭაყმაძე). The lyrics were composed by David Magradze (დავით მაღრაძე).

Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm (My Fatherland, My Happiness and Joy) is the national anthem of Estonia. It was adopted as the national anthem in 1920.
The lyrics were written by Johann Voldemar Jannsen and are set to a melody composed in 1848 by Fredrik (Friedrich) Pacius which is also that of the national anthem of Finland: Maamme (Swedish: Vårt Land, which was the unofficial anthem of The Grand Duchy of Finland). The only difference between the two anthems is the key signature they are in. It is also considered to be an ethnic anthem for Livonian people with text Min izāmō, min sindimō (My Fatherland, my native land).

The State Anthem of the Republic of Belarus (Dziaržawny himn Respubliki Bjelarusj / Дзяржаўны гімн Рэспублікі Беларусь), better known as My Belarusy (Мы, беларусы | English: We Belarusians), is the national anthem of Belarus. It was originally written in the 1940s and adopted in 1955 for use in the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. The music of the Byelorussian SSR's regional anthem was composed by Niescier Sakałoŭski and the lyrics were written by Michas Klimkovič. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the music composed by Sakalowski was kept and the lyrics were discarded. New lyrics, which were written by Klimkovič and Uladzimir Karyzna, were adopted by a presidential decree issued on 2 July 2002. The lyrics now speak of a friendly Belarus, honoring past military battles and looking forward to the future.

Azərbaycan Marşı (Azerbaijan March or March of Azerbaijan) is the national anthem of Azerbaijan (The Republic of Azerbaijan). The music was composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, with lyrics by poet Ahmad Javad. The government officially adopted the anthem in 1920 with the passage of the decree, "On the State Hymn of the Republic of Azerbaijan." In 1992, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan's government officially restored Azərbaycan Marşı as the national anthem.

The government of Azerbaijan has also officially declared the national anthem to be "the sacred symbol of the Azerbaijan state, its independence and unity."

Since 2006, a fragment of the lyrics from the national anthem is depicted on the obverse of the Azerbaijani 5 manat banknote. In 2011, to mark the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence from Soviet rule, the government issued a stamp celebrating the anthem.

Mer Hayrenik (Մեր Հայրենիք | English: Our Fatherland) is the national anthem of Armenia. Barsegh Kanachyan composed the music, while the lyrics were authored by Mikayel Nalbandian. First adopted in 1918 as the anthem of the short-lived First Republic of Armenia, it was subsequently banned after the country was invaded and incorporated into the Soviet Union. Following the dissolution of the USSR and the restoration of sovereignty in 1991, the song was re-adopted as the national anthem of the newly independent state, albeit with slightly modified lyrics.

The State Anthem of the Soviet Union, also known as the State Anthem of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Gosudarstvenny Gimn Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik) was the national anthem of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the regional anthem of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic from 1944 to 1991, replacing "The Internationale". Its original lyrics were written by Sergey Mikhalkov (1913–2009) in collaboration with Gabriel El-Registan (1899–1945), and its music composed by Alexander Alexandrov (1883–1946). Following a two-decade interval in which the anthem was performed without lyrics, a second set of lyrics, also written by Mikhalkov, was adopted in 1977.

Although Russia adopted a new anthem in 1990 and the Soviet Union was dissolved in December 1991, the Soviet-era melody was restored with new lyrics (once again written by Mikhalkov) in 2000, and has been used since in the second version of the Russian anthem.

The State Anthem of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Rupublic
(Uzbek: O'zbekiston Sovet Sotsialistik Respublikasi Davlat Madhiyasi | Russian: Gosudarstvennyy Gimn Uzbekskoy Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika) was the national anthem of Uzbekistan when it was a republic of the Soviet Union and known as the Uzbek SSR.

The anthem was used 1947 to 1992. The music was composed by Mutal Burkhanov, and the words were written by Timur Fattah and Turab Tula. This anthem (like the anthems of the Tajik SSR and the Turkmen SSR) opens with a salute to the Russian people, while the Uzbeks themselves are not actually mentioned until the fourth line. The melody is used in the current national anthem of Uzbekistan, with different lyrics. It is one of the four remaining post-Soviet countries, along with Russia, Belarus, and Tajikistan, to continuously use their Soviet-era anthems with different lyrics.

The State Anthem of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen: Türkmenistan Sowet Socialistik Respublikasy Döwlet Gimni) was adopted in 1946 and used until 1991 by the Turkmen SSR as a regional anthem. When Turkmenistan became an independent state in 1991, the regional anthem became the national anthem of Turkmenistan, and was used as such until late 1996, although without lyrics, as the Soviet-era lyrics were discontinued upon Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union.

It was used from 1946 to 1996. The music was composed by Veli Mukhatov, who also composed the current national anthem of Turkmenistan; and the lyrics were written by Aman Kekilov and a group of authors. On 12 April 1978, the original lyrics were changed to remove mentions of Joseph Stalin. After Turkmenistan's independence was declared, its melody was still used until late 1996. Except, there were no lyrics in the new version.

The State Anthem of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik: Surudi milliji Çumhurii Şūravii Sotsialistii Toçikiston; Russian: Gimn Tadžikskoj Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika) was the national anthem of Tajikistan until 1994. It was also the regional anthem of the Tajik SSR, a constituent republic of the Soviet Union.

The anthem used from 1946 to 1994. The music was composed by Suleiman Yudakov, and the lyrics were written by Abolqasem Lahouti. The melody is used in the current national anthem of Tajikistan, with different lyrics. It is composed in minor. In 1977, the lyrics were changed to remove mentions of Joseph Stalin. This is the version presented here for the Tajik stanzas, but the Russian version given here is the old one.

Unlike other former Soviet states like Belarus, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan that appropriated their old Soviet-era regional anthems as national ones but did so without the Soviet lyrics, Tajikistan retained the Soviet lyrics for a time before replacing them in 1994.

It is also one of the six countries to continuously use their Soviet-era anthems; the other five being Uzbekistan, Russia (since 2000), Kazakhstan (until 2006), Turkmenistan (until 1997), and Belarus.

Fun Facts: The Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was also commonly known as Soviet Tajikistan.

The State Anthem of the Moldavian SSR (Romanian: Imnul de Stat al Republica Sovietică Socialistă Moldovenești) was the regional anthem of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, a constituent republic of the Soviet Union.

Originally, the anthem began with the words, "Moldova cu doine străbune pe plaiuri" and was composed by Ștefan Neaga, with lyrics by the poets Emilian Bukov and Bogdan Istru (Ivan Bodarev) in 1945.

Ivan Bodiul, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Moldova, authorized composer Eduard Lazarev to modify the anthem in a "Musical Renovation". (Second Edition of the Anthem).

The lyrics were rewritten, removing all references to Joseph Stalin. The music was also altered, removing the original three-stanza structure in favor of a single-stanza three-part structure.

The beginning words of the anthem were changed to "Moldova Sovietică".

The State Anthem of the Lithuanian SSR (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Tarybų Socialistinės Respublikos himnas) was the regional anthem of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, a constituent state of the Soviet Union.

During the Soviet rule in Lithuania, the song was adopted by the Lithuanian SSR government in 1950, substituted for the Tautiška giesmė, which was used briefly as a national anthem of Lithuania in 1944 until 1950. In 1988, the official anthem of the Republic of Lithuania (Tautiška giesmė) was once again openly utilized as the Lithuanian anthem, and its status as the national anthem was restored by the independent Lithuanian government in 1992 and is still used today.

The music was composed by Balys Dvarionas and Jonas Švedas, and the original lyrics authored by Antanas Venclova. After Joseph Stalin's death, Vacys Reimeris changed the second stanza of the lyrics to remove mention of Stalin. The second stanza lyrics were changed to state that Lenin had lit the path to freedom, helped by the Russian people, led by the party (Reimeris changed the word "Stalin" to "party") and exhorted the Lithuanian people to work with peoples of the other Soviet Republics.

The State Anthem of the Latvian SSR (Latvian: Latvijas Padomju Sociālistiskās Republikas himna; Russian: Gimn Latviyskoy Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika) was the anthem of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic under the Soviet Union.

During Soviet rule, the previous anthem, "Dievs, svētī Latviju!", composed by Kārlis Baumanis was illegal and the anthem was approved by the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic on 19 July 1945. The original lyrics had references to Joseph Stalin until its replacement in 1977 when the references of him were removed. After Latvia regained independence in 1990, Dievs, svētī Latviju! was restored as its anthem on 15 February 1991.

The music was composed by Anatols Liepiņš, and the lyrics were written by Fricis Rokpelnis and Jūlijs Vanags.

The State Anthem of the Georgian SSR (Georgian: Sakartvelos Sabch’ota Sotsialist’uri Resp’ublik’is Sakhelmts’ipo himni) was the regional anthem of the Georgian SSR. The anthem was used from 1946 to 1990. The music was composed by Otar Taktakishvili, and the words were written by Grigol Abashidze and Alexander Abasheli. All three stanzas (not including the refrain) in the original lyrics have references to Joseph Stalin, a native Georgian and leader of the Soviet Union at that time. These words were completely removed after Stalin's death as part of Nikita Khrushchev's de-Stalinization program. It is then replaced with new lyrics with no reference to Stalin itself. The last line of the refrain on the original version (Aq’vavdi, t’urpa kveq’anav — Ilkhine, kartvelt mkhareo!), which once existed on all refrains, was removed completely and replaced with also new lyrics.

It is one of three Soviet republic national anthems that does not mention the Russian people, the others being the anthem of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic and the anthem of the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic.

The "State Anthem of the Estonian SSR" (Estonian: Eesti Nõukogude Sotsialistliku Vabariigi hümn) was the regional anthem of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (under the Soviet Union) from 1945 to 1990. During the decades of the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the official Estonian anthem was strictly forbidden. Throughout the years of prohibition, Lydia Koidula's poem, Mu isamaa on minu arm, with a melody by Gustav Ernesaks served as means of expressing national feelings, and was regarded as an unofficial anthem of Estonia. With the restoration of Estonian independence in 1991, the official national anthem from 1920 by Fredrik Pacius with lyrics by Johann Voldemar Jannsen was restored.

Along with the Anthem of the Armenian SSR, it is one of the only two SSR anthems without an intro. The anthem was presented to the government of the USSR on May 1944, three months after the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on February 3, 1944, "On the State Anthems of the Soviet Republics."

The music of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic's anthem was composed by Gustav Ernesaks, and the lyrics were written by Johannes Semper. It, the anthem of the Karelo-Finnish SSR, and the anthem of the Georgian SSR were the only ones not to mention the Russian people. When Stalin died in 1953, during the De-Stalinization, the State Anthems were muted by Nikita Khrushchev alongside with the ESSR Anthem. On July 21, 1956, the third stanza of the lyrics was changed to remove mentions of Joseph Stalin.

The State Anthem of the Byelorussian SSR was the regional anthem of the Byelorussian SSR, a republic of the Soviet Union. It was used from 1952 to 1991. It took 11 years to create lyrics for it, even producing a version that mentions then-Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The music was composed by Nestar Sakalowski, and the lyrics were written by Mihas' Klimovich.

In 1991, when the Byelorussian SSR became independent from Soviet rule as Belarus, it retained the Soviet-era regional anthem as its national one, albeit without lyrics until 2002, when new lyrics were created (this version is still in use today).

The State Anthem of the Azerbaijan SSR was the anthem of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic in the former Soviet Union. It was created in 1944 and was used from 1945 to 1992. In 1930, after 10 years of establishment of the Soviet republic (and while it was part of the within the Transcaucasian SFSR), Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov wrote the lyrics and composed the music for the new anthem. Hajibeyov also conducted its first premiere in Baku on 28 April 1930; however, little to no information about the anthem's adoption as the State anthem was given. It was composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, who also composed the current national anthem of Azerbaijan. Suleyman Rustam, Samad Vurgun and Huseyn Arif wrote the lyrics which were altered in 1978 to remove mentions of Joseph Stalin. Like many national anthems of the republics of the Soviet Union, this song praised Vladimir Lenin (and formerly Joseph Stalin as well), the October Revolution and Communism. It also praised the friendship of the republics of the Soviet Union. It was also the anthem of Azerbaijan when it gained independence until 1992 when the March of Azerbaijan was restored.

The State Anthem of the Armenian SSR (Armenian: Հայկական ՍՍՀ օրհներգ / Hajkakan SSH orhnerg) was the national anthem of Armenia when it was a republic of the Soviet Union and known as the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. It was used between 1944 and 1991. Its music was composed by world-famous Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian and the lyrics were written by Sarmen. Along with the Anthem of the Estonian SSR, it is one of the only two SSR anthems without an intro.

One of the heroic themes heard in the III Act of Gayane (1942) was later used by Khachaturian in music of this National Anthem. Upon independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia adopted the anthem "Mer Hayrenik" in its place.
