One thing I often get asked about with my seascape paintings is how do you paint the translucency of a breaking ocean wave? Well it is not as difficult as you might think.

In this video I give you some tips on painting ocean waves and how to achieve that magical translucency in the water as the sunlight shines through it. I also give you some general tips for painting seascapes.

This video follows on from my recent video on my painting process where I was painting en plein air in a place called Taupo Bay. Normally where I begin a painting project I start with a plein air painting.

Having returned to the studio I began sketching. After the first sketch I did which I showed in the first video I decided that I could do better and so I redesigned the composition and used some reference photos from a different time of day.

In this video I show you how I sketched a scene of Taupo Bay on grey card and a range of pencils. The advantage of sketching on grey paper is that the darker value allows the highlights to really stand out especially if you use a white pastel pencil.

I also explain how values in the landscape work and how we can apply it to drawing.

In this video I show you how to paint a countryside scene that features trees, rolling hills and reflective water.

This painting originally started off as a field painting that I painted en plein air in a place along the Kawakawa river in Northland, New Zealand. It sat on my shelf in my studio for a year when I decided to add some details to it.

The cool thing about plein air paintings is they look great as they are, loose and impressionistic but there is also loads of opportunities to add more details to them.

Check out the written notes that accompany this video. Please feel free to use the reference photos if you would like to have a go at painting this.

If you found this video interesting and helpful and you lik..

In this video I show how my painting projects start from the very beginning. This involves taking a trip to the location that will be the subject of a future painting, taking reference photos and in most cases doing a plein air painting on location.

In this video I take you on a journey to a beach in northern New Zealand called Taupo Bay. It's a stunning spot and I most definitely want to paint a studio art work of this location. I spent the day there taking photos and doing a plein air painting which I demonstrate in this video.

I demonstrate the painting process of the coastal scene I painted en plein air at Taupo Bay. I also show you some of the gear and and materials I am using.

In the last part of the video I am back in the studio going through my photo reference and designing compositions in my sketch book. So far I have only got as far as doing a final sketch so there is still a colour study to do before I begin the final studio painting. Stay tuned as I will be making videos on this part of the painting process also.

This is a speeded up video of me painting a landscape, outdoors en plein air in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.

Painting outdoors is known as painting 'en plein air', a French term for painting outside. I love painting outdoors especially when I get to visit some epic locations within New Zealand.

In this speeded up video I painted a view of Mt Talbot and Mt Crosscut in Fiordland National Park. This is one of my favourite places to paint outdoors and one of my favourite views to paint.

I have painted this view many time and I have done several studio paintings of this scene.

Painting en plein air is a great way of really capturing the atmosphere and mystique of a location. For me, my plein air paintings are becoming like a diary of my life...but in paintings.

Whilst my studio paintings are detailed my plein air painting is much more loose gestural, a style that painting outdoors lends itself so well.

This is a speeded up video of me painting a mountain landscape, outdoors in Paradise, New Zealand. I paint outdoors a lot, I love being outside in the fresh air and painting from life and I have found that painting outdoors has really improved my studio work and my painting skills overall. I have had many lightbulb moments from painting outdoors.

When I paint outdoors I often use the paintings as colour studies for more detailed studio paintings.

Painting outdoors in known as painting 'en plein air', a French term meaning to paint outside.

In this video I painted the view of Mt Chaos and the Dart River that meanders through the mountain valley. I am painting with oils on an 8" x 10" canvas panel.

Whilst my studio paintings are detailed my plein air painting is much more loose gestural, a style that painting outdoors lends itself so well.

The subject of colour theory can seem daunting and a bit dry but it doesn’t need to be. Just learning a few basic principles of colour theory and values can help you to set an easy to remember structure in your head that can really make a difference to your painting.

In this video I briefly cover the basics of the colour wheel, colours and values and some tips on how you can apply these basic principles to your painting.

In this video I recreate the colours I normally use for painting using only red, yellow, blue and white and then I paint a landscape using those three primary colours and white. However the landscape I am creating is the exact same scene I painted in my previous YouTube video on mixing greens. I wanted to see if I could if I could recreate this landscape using red, yellow, blue and white. At the end of the video I compare the two paintings.

Check out the written notes that accompany this video.

One of the trickiest colours to mix in a landscape painting is green and its one that causes artists the most problems. Mix your greens right and they can look amazing and vibrant but get the wrong and they can look acidic and harsh.

In this painting tutorial I will show you how to mix some basic greens that you can use in a landscape painting. But instead of me spending the whole video in front of my paint palette, I've mixed the greens as I paint a landscape that features rolling hills and trees from the Northland region of New Zealand.

Whilst this art work is painted in oils you can use acrylics also.

In this painting tutorial I cover the step-by-step process on the following:

Colours
Palette footage of me mixing some greens
Blocking in the painting
Adding details
Final details

Mountains are one of my favourite subjects to paint and it’s also a good subject to paint if you are learning to paint landscapes as it’s much easier to see the different tones and values in the scene you are painting.

I normally paint art works in oils but I’ve had a few requests for me to do a painting tutorial using acrylics so this is for the acrylic painters. However if you are an oil painter you still may find this painting tutorial useful as the principles of colour and tone are the same.

For some people painting in oils is not practical, so I wanted to show you that you can still get some good results with acrylics. Also the fact that they dry very quickly can be an advantage.

In this painting tutorial I cover the step-by-step process how I painted this mountain landscape in acrylics. I will also cover the following:

Composition
Colours
Brushes
Blocking in the painting
Adding details
Final details

Have you ever been sat in your art studio feeling uninspired and like you’ve hit a wall? Well this sometimes happens to me when I’ve spent too much time in the studio and that's when I know I need to get outside in nature and either paint en plein air, or take reference photos or both.

In this video I will show you how to get inspired by getting out in the landscape and painting outdoors.

I will show you how I painted a landscape of a view of the Bay of Islands, New Zealand which started off as a plein air painting and the was completed in the studio where I added more details.

In this painting tutorial I cover the step-by-step process how I painted this art work en plein air and then the details added in the studio. I will also cover the following:

Composition
Colours
Brushes
Plein air painting gear
Plein air painting process - painting the landscape
Studio additions - final details

Time Lapse Video - EN PLEIN AIR Painting at the Matukituki River, New Zealand

This is a speeded up video of me painting a landscape, outdoors en plein air at the Matukituki River, New Zealand.

Painting outdoors is known as painting 'en plein air', a French term for painting outside. I love painting outdoors especially when I get to visit some epic locations within New Zealand.

In this speeded up video I painted a view along the Matukituki River, which is located near the town of Wanaka in the south island of New Zealand. This scene caught my eye as I was driving past as I loved the poplar and willow trees juxtaposed against the high mountains in the background. The cows drinking from the stream adds to the overall story of the scene.

In this video I show you how to paint water, trees and mountains. The painting depicts a very familiar view in Queenstown, New Zealand and the view features willow trees growing on the foreshore of Lake Wakatipu, with The Remarkables Mountains in the background.

This painting was a commission and as the view is so well known in Queenstown, I was limited on being able to change the landscape to improve the composition. However I looked at some old 19th century paintings and got some composition ideas from them.

I painted this article t work in oils but you can also use acrylics as the principles of colour and tone are exactly the same.

In the video I will explain the following:

1. Composition
2. Colours and brushes
3. Blocking in the painting
4. Tips on painting water, trees and mountains
5. Adding final details

In the video I show you how to paint a seascape feature the coast of Wellington in New Zealand. This is just a small painting, but I love painting small art works and you can use them as colour studies to refer to if you are going to paint a large art work. I nearly always paint a small painting before doing a big one and sometimes a small painting is as far as it'll go but often i'll develop the idea and do a large painting.

In this video I discuss the idea behind the composition, I go over the colours and brushes I am using, I explain the principles behind the tonality of the painting and I explain how to mix some of the colours I am using. Also there are lots of tips for painting seascapes in general.

If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

If you have any questions about painting seascapes or anything art related please leave them in the comments section below and I will do my best to answer them :)

In this video I will show you my design process I use for creating a painting. I want to paint a seascape of the coast of Wellington in New Zealand, but before I get into the painting I need to plan and design it first.

I never just start a painting, I've had too many disasters with paintings where I didn't do any prior planning so I always at least do some pencil sketches but very often a colour study too.

Colour studies are small paintings in their own right and in this video I will show you my sketching process and a step by step tutorial on painting the small seascape colour study of the coast of Wellington.

In the video I will explain the following:

1. Composition
2. Pencil drawing technique
3. Colours and brushes
4. Painting technique
5. Colour mixing
6. Step by step painting tutorial

If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

In this video I travelled went to Phuket, Thailand and I brought my paints with me. I wanted to paint a tropical beach and some palm trees I went to Kata Beach and I decided to paint the beach outdoors, known as painting 'en plein air'.

As well as studio painting I also love painting outdoors as I think its a great way of documenting the places I've been to...but in paintings. Outdoor painting known as painting 'en plein air' really captures the atmosphere and feeling of a place and it'll help you improve your painting skills.

It was a hot, sunny and hazy day and what with Thailand being in the tropics, it's very humid. I painted this tropical beach scene at Kata Beach, I'll show you how I painted it.

If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

In this video I show you how to paint a coastal seascape featuring cliffs and the ocean around the south coast of Guernsey, a small island located in the English Channel.

In the video I will explain the following:

1. Composition
2. Colours and brushes
3. Blocking in the painting
4. Adding detail
5. Adding final details

I explain how to paint the cliffs and how to make the foliage on the cliffs recede in the distant landforms. I show you how to paint the sea and simplify the complexities of the moving water in a manner that still gives the appearance of a realistic ocean. I explain how to get the tonality of the painting correct, show you how to mix a few colours and much more.

A special thanks to my mother Wendy Pratt who gave me some footage of Icart Point as I forgot to film the area when I visited Guernsey last year!
