The true crime story of Forrest Ray Colson, the Man From Mars Bandit, a fired cop who went on an armed robbery spree in 1950 and 1951, hitting a series of Los Angeles area supermarkets and terrorizing shoppers—all while wearing a bizarre disguise foreshadowing the "Mad Max" movie poster 18 years in the future.

Summer 1597. Prior to launching their inland thrust into Cholla (Jeolla) Province, the Japanese set out to destroy the Korean navy, which had caused them so much trouble in Hideyoshi’s first Korean invasion. Fortunately for them, supreme commander Yi Sun-sin is no longer in command of that formidable force. Admiral Yi has been removed from office and replaced by his erratic and incompetent nemesis, Won Gyun. What follows is the epic destruction of almost the entire Korean navy in the Battle of Chilchon Strait.

January 1597. Japanese forces are returning to Korea in preparation for Hideyoshi’s second invasion. But they don’t advance inland. Not yet. The Korean navy, which had caused them so much trouble in the first invasion, first has to be destroyed. Fortunately for the Japanese, they have an ally this time: the Korean government itself. Factional fighting in Seoul will result in supreme naval commander Yi Sun-sin, Korea’s greatest war hero, being thrown into prison and replaced by his incompetent rival, Won Gyun.

Late summer 1592. The Japanese advance on China has ground to a halt and Hideyoshi’s daimyo commanders are trying to subdue Korea. Kato Kiyomasa and his second contingent have been assigned the northeastern province of Hamgyeong. Kato will march all the way north through Hamgyeong and cross the Tumen River into Manchuria—actually into the outer reaches of the Ming Chinese empire—to take on the Jurchen.

The story of Lee Bible, who crashed in the White Triplex (aka Triplex Special) on Daytona Beach in 1929 while trying to reclaim the land speed record for the United States. This is the first episode of an ongoing series on the Imjin War, based on my book “THE IMJIN WAR: Japan’s Sixteenth-Century Invasion of Korea and Attempt to Conquer China.” To kick things off, I give some background on the three main contenders in the conflict: Japan in the sengoku civil war era, as it is conquered / unified by Oda Nobunaga and his successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi; Korea in the Joseon dynasty, focused on Jurchen tribesmen to the north and wako pirates to the south and oblivious to the emerging threat posed by Hideyoshi; and Ming dynasty China, the Middle Kingdom, the center of the East Asian world. The Chinese are dealing with problems of their own in the Ming dynasty’s declining years and, like the Koreans, are not paying much attention to what is going on in Japan.

A new series on the legends of land speed, names like Craig Breedlove, Art Arfons, Walt Arfons, Nathan Ostich, Athol Graham, Mickey Thompson, Glenn Leasher, Gary Gabelich and more. Brought to you by Samuel Hawley, author of "Speed Duel: The Inside Story of the Land Speed Record in the Sixties," and "Ultimate Speed," the authorized biography of motorsports giant Craig Breedlove.
