Fighting zombies with a pickaxe is not a good idea in Minecraft, and it sure isn't in real life either... I mean, if the undead existed and that. As far as improvised defensive tools are concerned I'd reach for a shovel instead.

Where to find the zombie head analog:

"Winds Of Stories" by HorrorPen
https://opengameart.org/content/winds-of-stories..

Still one of the most frequently asked questions on my channel. People are looking for the ultimate sword of perfection, superior to everything else... Which does not exist.

The same weapon may excel in one situation but be a major disadvantage in another. Two-handed greatsword in the jungle? Terrible idea. Gladius without shield in a one-on-one duel on an open field? Good luck. Katana without armor against archers? You get the idea.

So in this video I talk about some of the many factors that we have to consider when asking such a broad question. I also warn against over-stating the point that all swords were flawlessly design to be 100% efficient at their intended purpose in a given culture and time period. Humans aren't perfect, and their creations aren't either.

You can just sense the sadistic pleasure that the game developers had when designing this nightmarish arrangement of enemies, traps, and pitfalls.

If you think Dark Souls is hard and makes you die a lot, you haven't played this. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts will numb your thumb and crush your spirits. xD

Good old Super Nintendo... gotta love some retro gaming every now and then.

This time I felt like spontaneously rambling about the what goes into a sword review, the challenge of objectivity, and other observations. The more you work on improving your methods for testing and evaluating quality the more you realize how much human subjectivity can get in the way. Or maybe that's just me, who knows.

Recently I've been going back to classic games and noticed some pretty amusing designs. Fantasy is great and there is plenty of badass artwork. Sometimes it's reasonably immersive, other times no so much.

So let's take a look at some examples of armor that would be amazingly ineffective or inconvenient to use in real life. I've narrowed the choices down to games that came out before 2000 and that I've played at some point. Mostly fighting games. Some arcade, some Neo Geo, and some Super Nintendo.

10. Charlotte, Samurai Showdown

09. Sophitia, Soul Calibur

08. Arthur, Ghosts ‘n Goblins / Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts

07. The crown (various RPGs)

06. Simon Belmont, Super Castlevania IV

05. Percival, Knights of the Round

04. Zhang Fei, Dynasty Warriors

03. Horned Reaper (Horny) from Dungeon Keeper

02. Shao Kahn, Mortal Kombat

01. Jen-Tai, Weaponlord

This video is for beginner students in historical armed martial arts and anyone else who is interested in the bio mechanics of sword fighting. It's about core engagement, the most fundamental way to increase striking power and transfer more kinetic energy.

It also helps maintain good edge alignment when cutting tatami mats for example.

Let's take a look at the oldest swords that we have evidence for. This weapon has its humble origins in relatively crude copper daggers, almost 6000 years ago. As ancient metalworkers developed their skills the blades grow gradually longer, eventually transitioning into copper swords.

Adding materials to copper and thereby creating alloys then led to the development of bronze swords, which were far more effective for fighting.

Where to find these Han Dynasty shield reproductions:
https://lkchensword.com/engimatic-gou-rang

Ancient China had some interesting and (to European eyes) unusual weapons. The hook shield is somewhat comparable to the medieval buckler but unlike anything that was used in the West during that time period (which saw the rise and height of the Roman Empire).

So in this video we experiment with the Gou-Rang to see how it could be used and how it compares to other types of shields. It seems to be useful even against polearms. I currently don't have a practice jian, so I had to use the closest equivalents I own: A sidesword and a Viking sword. Not terribly close, but what can you do.

This time we're looking at some Youtube reviewer first-world problems... I can't keep up with all these swords. Believe it or not, there is indeed such a thing as too many swords. Testing and reviewing them takes a while, and winter has been throwing a snowy, frosty monkey wrench into my progress.

So the least I can do right now is show you what I've got and talk a bit about the stuff. It's mainly Chinese reproduction swords, which is nice for a change. I'm always interesting in trying out something new and getting a feel for arms and armor from different eras and parts of the world.

These are mostly from the Han Dynasty, so throughout the same time period as the Roman Empire during its rise and peak.

http://theslantedroom.weebly.com/

Inspired by a statement in a podcast on the Daily Wire that "zero women can fight with a sword" I decided to have a video discussion with Nicole Smith, the co-founder and senior instructor of Blood & Iron Burnaby, and Brittany Reeves, founder of the Mordhau Historical Combat school.

We talk about issues like strength disparity and how to deal with it, women in the HEMA community and the particular challenges they sometimes face, as well as the fact that people jump to conclusions about "special treatment" even when nobody demands any such.

Overall the community is quite welcoming because of efforts to be inclusive and the successes that female fighters have carved out for themselves through hard work, and because we all speak the "language of the sword". :)

Blargedy, one of my highest tier supporters on Patreon, deviously tricked me into playing Monster Hunter World... by just flat out sending me the game. xD And you know what? This is ridiculous over the top fantasy done right. Believe it or not, I like it.

We had lots of fun moments, like when we were supposed to sneak past a bigass dragon and I shot it in the face before the NPC even had a chance to tell me to stay quiet. :D

It was a 1-1/2 hour play, streamed to the "Elite Duelist" ($25 tier) Patreon Discord server. This is the condensed video version.

I rarely do compilation videos but they can be a lot of fun, and I've been steamrolled by the worst cold (or flu or whatever it is) that I can remember, so I haven't been able to record anything.

Hopefully you'll have fun with this, and let me know what you think.

It's easily one of the most realistic depictions of plate armor I've seen... it actually protects the wearer, can you imagine that. :D Tempered steel that can deflect and absorb even powerful sword cuts, instead of silver painted cardboard that the hero or villain just slices wide open.

Sometimes you randomly stumble upon some real comedy gold on the internet... A friend of mine typed "Skallagrim" into the search for fun, to see what would come up, and the result was hilarious. Incomplete biography is one thing, but entirely made up stuff, while claiming "various newspapers" and other vague "sources", that's pretty funny.

Also yet another good reminder of how important skepticism and source critique are, especially for random information you find online. I do wish some of this was true though...

This made me laugh so much I got a supervillain cough. :D

Another quick demonstration and commentary about differences between fantasy sword fighting and historical techniques. Dual swords are of course quite popular for style, and although the use of two full sized blades is rare in historical European martial arts it did occur. It's more challenging to learn but can be useful against a single weapon (although not as useful as sword & shield in my opinion).

If you're interested in elements of realism in fantasy and like over-analyzing of fight scenes, you'll probably enjoy this. Just a geeky rant about how Geralt (Henry Cavill) moves and what is plausible for him to get away with, considering his enhanced reflexes, speed, etc.

Of course the multiple attackers are politely waiting their turn instead of ganging up on him at the same time, that's just a standard movie trope. The epic hero wouldn't look so badass if he got knocked over the head by one dude while trying to defend against three others coming at him from the front and sides.

There's crossbow bolt deflection, reverse grip sword handling, spinning, and other shenanigans to comment on.

This thing is quite enjoyable for recreational target practice. The self-cocking design with integrated lever is easy and fun to use, and the build quality seems good overall, with the exception of the stock and the red dot sight that come with it.

The sight is cheap and flimsy, but otherwise it's well made from what I can tell (don't know about long-term durability yet). It's pretty powerful considering the small, compact size. Excellent ergonomics and light weight.

It's also just about the shortest crossbow that's legal in Canada (3 cm above the requirement to not be classified as prohibited pistol crossbow).
