This is an introduction to the fundamentals of stance and movement in HEMA (historical European Martial Arts). It's directed mainly at beginners, but some advanced students might find it helpful too.

Not as exciting as swinging swords, but crucial. If the foundation is weak, everything else falls apart.

0:00 Intro
0:55 Basic stance
2:25 Passing step
3:02 Foot position
4:25 Advancing / retreating step
5:24 Gathering step
6:40 Triangle step (lateral movement)
7:23 Crossing step
8:17 Practice drills
9:51 Core engagement

Deathstroke (DC), Baiken (Guilty Gear), Guts (Berserk), and a number of other elite warriors from movies and video games have only one fully functional eye. How much of a disadvantage is that in swordsmanship?

In this video I talk about the issues of depth perception and peripheral vision, how they may be less limiting than you think, and what that means for historical or fantasy combat.

When comparing sword designs it's easy to go full nerd and over-analyze every little detail. But how much of a difference is it really in practical terms? Is one sword objectively better than another just because it's more versatile, i.e. offers more options for the martial toolkit?

Here is my current, rambly take on it. :)

0:00 Intro / Single-edged vs. double-edged blades
1:28 Hilt Symmetry and grip styles
2:24 Longsword and Kriegsmesser compared
3:42 Half-swording and murder stroke
5:40 The versatility of the Nagel (nail guard)
6:27 The martial toolkit
7:31 Reasons for a single-edged blade
8:05 When versatility doesn't matter
10:32 European buckler vs. Chinese Gou-Rang
12:56 Single-handed messer: Most versatile?

The video of the first test:
https://youtu.be/6itn84Iiuss

Obviously it's a problem that part of the hilt broke. But what about the blade, cutting performance, and handling? How good would this reproduction be if the issue was fixed? Here is my opinion on it.
Sort of an incomplete review, since I'm missing some close-up pictures and video footage. Should still be useful though.

So, have you ever wondered what armed Street Fighter would be like? I have, and here are my ideas for which historical sword / polearm / etc would suit the individual characters. I'm limiting it to the original roster from Street Fighter 2 (Turbo), to not make the video overly long.

The background music is the remixed character themes, from OC Remix:

I've been wanting to try out a Hussite flail for a while. Simple concept, just a weaponized agricultural flail. How effective is it? Well, it sure hits hard...

And did you know how sturdy hard disk drives are? You could probably make armor out of the disks... quite impressive!

Fun game to mess around with. The skeletons are pretty badass, and surprisingly agile. The other undead dudes are quite lively for their apparent age, but not the brightest... Combined with the traps that makes for some comedic moments. :)

And yes, experience with real-life historical martial arts does come in handy. It doesn't translate perfectly to virtual reality, but knowing measure, timing, and basic parries sure helps.

This is a well made felling axe with curved handle that Baryonyx sent to me for testing and review. It showed some impressive power in the wood chopping tests, although there was one problem, as you'll see in the video.

Keep in mind that the delivery time may be quite long, depending on how many orders they have to catch up with.

The awesome mod that I'm showing in this video:
https://www.nexusmods.com/bladeandsorcery/mods/1144

The attention to detail is impressive, these models look exactly like the real thing, down to every little line. Even the handle wrap is done perfectly, with the grooved texture and each riser captured accurately. The mod also adds the ability to grip the blade for half-swording and the infamous Mordhau (murder stroke).

The next best thing to owning these swords in real life is to wreck some fools with them in virtual reality. :)

I had one ZGB zombie head left and gave in to the curiosity about how well the Principe would do against it... that was a mistake. But so was the one bad cut with terrible edge alignment on a thick branch that I did when testing the strength of the blade. Those two didn't go well together...

In this video I also try blunt weapons, an axe, and the Mordhau ("murder stroke") with a sword on poor old Ivan.

In the sub-$500 (and especially sub-$300) range there are many reproductions of the Hellenic kopis on the market that are only loosely inspired by historical originals. This one here is a direct replica of a specific find, displayed at a museum in Korfu, Greece.

The only other reproductions of this particular kopis that I'm aware of are high-end, meaning well above 500 or even over 2000 dollars. Of course you can't expect the same level of quality, but this sword definitely impressed me, especially considering the constraints of offering a historical replica for a bit over $300 (upper budget or lower mid-range).

It did better than I expected when cutting tatami and a ballistic gel torso. Also held up beautifully in hard chopping tests on wooden branches and particle board. Overall easy to recommend.

This an updated discussion of sword throwing, as mentioned by the 14/15th century Italian sword master Fiore de'i Liberi. I made a video about it back in 2015 and figured that revisiting it might be interesting.
https://youtu.be/wTC_1HRgbuo

So in this video I talk about the potential risk and reward involved in such a tactic, and try out a few different ways of throwing a longsword.

These two were interesting to test out. Surprisingly mixed bag... So far I've seen very good quality from LK Chen, but there were some odd flaws with the fit and finish that I didn't expect. The blades are great and can cut very well (although they aren't the most forgiving with regards to edge alignment).

In the video I do testing cutting on tatami and a ballistic gel torso, as well as harder testing on branches and particle board, to figure out how sturdy the construction is. I also talk a bit about their historical background. I hope you find the review interesting and informative.

This is a common question, considering how difficult it is to fight a spear/halberd/poleaxe/etc with a sword: Can't you just cut the wooden haft? Well, you can try... But is the opponent going to let you?

And if it succeeds, what sort of damage to the pole can you expect? In this video I talk about my opinion on the video, demonstrate a few techniques, and test a sharp longsword against an ash and hickory pole.

I hope not... :)

This video was inspired by two comments on the previous video, where I used an apparently flawed interpretation of a technique from Fiore de'i Liberi's manuscript as an example.

It's always good to receive constructive criticism and have an open discourse about different points of view. I also use the opportunity for a little rant about situations where people take their personal preference too far and shame others for theirs. Including calling any Westerner with an interest in Japanese swordsmanship a "weeb", or arrogantly dismissing certain historical martial arts systems altogether.

Here is an opinion / rant about some general tendencies I've seen in martial arts demonstrations (be it armed or unarmed). Obviously you need some degree of compliance for a clean, easy to follow technique demonstration, but some people take it to the extreme. When the training partner remains a passive passive for 3-6 consecutive actions, that's not very realistic. And learning a Killer Instinct style ultra combo won't benefit anyone in sparring with a fully resisting opponent.
