In this video I take a look at a movie duel between a Chinese swordsman with a miaodao (two-handed saber) and a Japanese swordsman with a katana. Although realism was clearly not what the director focused on I'll be commenting on which parts of the choreography would be possible or reasonable in real life, and which not so much.

Hope you find it entertaining and informative. :)

This is my first impression of the Kenshin (replica of Uesugi Kenshin's katana) and the King Slayer (sword of the Chinese emperor ZhuDi). Not a final review yet, will have to test them first.

From fantasy dwarves to vikings (historical or not), the two-handed axe is one of the most iconic badass fighter / barbarian weapons. Like other long handled polearms it is not the easiest to wield, so in this video I'm showing some basics, based on historical European martial arts.

How much realism can you really expect from animations / fight choreography in videos games and movies? There are certainly limitations, depending on the genre, setting, and artistic vision.

Sometimes realism would make the story or gameplay less epic and engaging, or even boring or tedious. I sure don't want too much of that in my Castlevania games, for instance. :)
But sometimes it can spice things up by deviating from standard RPG tropes. Or it can be right at home in gritty dark fantasy.

Either way, in this video I give you some examples of the difference between exaggerated fictional moves and real historical combat techniques, for visual reference. And yeah, also because I just felt like rambling a bit about this topic. :)

Sword 'n board, the old classic in Dungeons & Dragons, other fantasy RPG's, historical games / movies, LARP, SCA fighting, etc. Why would you ever not use a shield or buckler? Well, it's great but no perfect...

So here are five advantages with a corresponding disadvantage each, based on martial arts techniques from medieval and renaissance manuscripts. Nothing good ever comes with zero strings attached, right? :)

Moving across all of Canada, from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia, was quite a trip...

From crazy pickup truck drivers and majestic mountains in British Columbia to the flat, windy plains of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, to the over-regulated, bumpy roads of northern Ontario, the somewhat alienating French-ness of Quebec, to pizza in the middle of a storm in New Brunswick, to our final destination.

An interesting and exhausting experience for sure. Hope you enjoy the travel footage and commentary.

The term comes from a famous judicial duel in France in 1547, between Guy Chabot de Saint-Gelais, baron de Jarnac and François de Vivonne, seigneur de La Châtaigneraye. It's often used in a derogatory manner, implying that it's a "dirty trick" or some sort of backstab. As my HEMA instructor Erik Bailey and are demonstrating based on our interpretation of different accounts of that duel, it's not so unusual, nor outrageous.

"Which is better, katana or longsword?" "Your thoughts on Chinese swords?" "What is the best sword"? - These are common questions, and they can be a little frustrating at times. :) Why? Because there is a lot more complexity involved...

What type of longsword are you talking about? Which Chinese Dynasty (i.e. time period)? Dao (saber) or jian (straight sword)? Best for what? Battlefield? Armored judicial duel? Unarmored civilian self-defense? Open field? Confined space?

So in this almost 20 min banter video I address a lot of the factors involved in discussing the effectiveness of sword designs. I also compare different Oakeshott types to illustrate the substantial variety. And we're taking a look at katana/longsword hybrids to see how a fusion of different designs works (or doesn't).

The two most favorite swords in my collection:

The Knecht by Albion (Kriegsmesser / "war knife")

The Gallowglass by Albion

Taking a look at the historical accuracy, fit & finish, handling, and blade quality of the Ashdown, a "battle-ready" sword inspired by 9th century Viking designs.

There are good and bad things about it. It's not exceptionally well made but not what I'd call poor quality either. Sort of middle of the road, which is fairly common on the reproduction market in the sub-$300 range. This however is priced at over $300, so that makes me take a harder look at the flaws...

You're probably aware of the High Ground meme from Star Wars: Episode III, where Obi-Wan boldly declared "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground."

If you've ever wondered how decisive that would actually be in a real life fight with historical swords, this video is for you.

Thanks to my good friend Swordsage for helping out with this video while he was on a visit.

This time I wanted to clear up the confusion around the term "claymore", which is most often incorrectly applied to two-handed swords with the characteristic quatrefoil tipped quillons. The word more accurately refers to the basket-hilted broadsword (or backsword in case of a single-edged blade) which became popular later in Scotland's history.

So next time someone calls something a "claymore" that is not a baskethilt sword you can go full nerd and be like "akshually...". ;)

How to defend against a spear thrust with a staff and a dagger? What to do if you only have two "cudgels" (i.e. wooden branches) and are attacked by a spearman? Is there any chance to ward off a longsword attack with just a dagger? The late 14th century Italian knight and fencing master Fiore de'i Liberi has some answers that my HEMA instructor Erik Bailey and I demonstrate and comment on in this video.

Swordsage brought a number of LK Chen swords to try out. They are reproductions of Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) designs. I was surprised by how light they felt, while retaining plenty of cutting power.

You can also see the difference in technique when cutting tatami mats. He learned sword handling through Chinese martial arts and utilizes somewhat different body mechanics than what I'm used to from my practice of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).

Definitely interesting, and a lot of fun!

In this video I'm discussing some of the available evidence for Viking Age berserkers. Both the archaeological material and the written sources have certain limitations and leave plenty of uncertainties. Interpretation and speculation can conjure different possible historical scenarios, and we have to keep in mind that it's impossible to know with complete certainty who these warriors were and exactly how they operated before and during battles.

Here is my impression of this historically inspired but unusual custom sword (not a full review by my standards due to limited testing).

The asymmetrical handle is quite strange, although more comfortable than it looks. The blade seems to be a longer version of the one on his single handed Thorpe falchion, which I reviewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEFdZv7tFh0

August is crazy busy... Moving is always hectic and sucks, and certainly even more so when going from one side of a continent to the other. It looks like I'll be able to keep the regular video uploads going though, I've finished quite a number ahead of time.

So... finally finding out that you have ADD at the age of 37 is weird. Explains a lot though, and it's good to eventually have a clue of how to tackle the particular challenges you've been dealing with all your life but haven't really understood.

If you haven't seen the review of this sword:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onrdVgijjkI

I decided to remove the brass flower ornament on the grip, since I found it uncomfortable and irritating. After some polishing to get rid of epoxy underneath the visible difference irked me enough to decide to polish and re-darken the entire thing. Totally unnecessary but it turned out pretty well in the end. Ammonia vapor creates a nice patina on brass.

I recommend Renaissance Wax for sealing the surface and preventing rust or tarnishing in long term storage. It seems expensive for the amount but it lasts a long time, you only need a very thin coat.

Great design, both functionally and visually. But the material needs some improvement. Fortunately I've gotten a reply from Leon Paul saying that they are planning to improve the steel quality.
