Raised in the South Side of Chicago mostly by his grandparents, he was surrounded by trauma and the crack epidemic. His musical tastes evolved in two different, yet congruent directions with hip-hop and alt-rock. Those come together in his own musical style that doesn’t always take itself too seriously and blends together indie rock, soul, funk & R&B. That humor is found notably on tracks like “Headass.”

His new album is an amalgamation of all of that with some very personal tales of love, loss and divorce. The song “The Black Mirror Episode” in all of its ridiculousness is semi-autobiographical in that a Black Mirror episode did help plant the seeds to push his relationship off a cliff. “Trauma” deals with trauma from his childhood that is often at the root of a lot of problems in his life.

Not everything personal is really heavy though. Just like being a headass, on “Sweatpants Spiderman” he explores trying to do life on his own again, like finding an apartment and the scary part of actually looking at prices. Meshed throughout the record are references to various anime, often JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

The Red Pears’ founding members, Henry Vargas (vocals and guitar) and Jose Corona (drums), draw their sound from the spectrum between the early 2000s New York indie rock scene and grunge to the cumbia and corridos that soundtracked their childhoods in El Monte, a sleepy suburban town just east of Los Angeles. After cycling through an assortment of lineups, mutual friend and bassist Patrick Juarez stayed on and expanded their operation. Now a solid three-piece band, these emerging alt-rockers, have come a long way from meeting at a local Battle of the Bands, practicing in their garages, and naming themselves after their favorite color and a pun on the word “pair”— a subtle nod to sonic inspirations The White Stripes and The Black Keys.
The Red Pears first got on the map with self-releases For Today, For Tomorrow, For What Is, For What Could’ve Been and We Bring Anything to the Table... Except Tables We Can't Bring Tables to the Table, touring behind them and learning the ins-and-outs of being on the road. The Red Pears North Star continues to be their undying honesty and commitment to the craft. “It all boils down to effort and humility,” says Vargas. “We just want to do our best and make the music we want to make. Now we have more help and resources, but it’s about continuing to push and keeping that humility.” With a release this fall, keep an eye on these up-and-comers of the Angelino music scene.

George Clanton ("the David Bowie of Vaporwave") and Nick Hexum from legendary band 311 release their first collaborative self-titled LP.

Critical Praise:

"It’s got a woozy, hard-slapping beat that makes me think an aurora summer must be similar to a deadbeat summer...It’s a vibe for sure." - Stereogum on "Aurora Summer"

"..Wavy... psychedelic and immersive as f**k. Sweet To the ears...surreal..." - The Needle Drop on "Aurora Summer"

"...Fusing elements of wonky electronica, ambient, shoegaze and acid house, Clanton’s production has seen him become an underground darling on the internet, but it’s this unlikely new collaborative tape with 311 singer Nick Hexum that might just prove to be his mainstream breakout moment." - MIXDOWN

“A breezy shot of aural sunshine.” - Stereogum on "Topanga State of Mind”

"Hexum’s signature staccato and fuzzy guitar melts into Clanton’s ethereal electronic backdrop to create the ultimate musical getaway." - Billboard on “Crash Pad”

“It’s a surprising collaboration, but it also makes sense.” - The FADER on “King For A Day”

"Way more awesome than anyone could’ve predicted." - Stereogum on “Out Of The Blue”

"Beautiful vaporwave number, featuring Hexum’s reverb-soaked vocals." - Uproxx on “Crash Pad”

“Sounds like the product of a totally mutual bond, Clanton finding inspiration in his muse and Hexum sounding reinvigorated by dipping his toes into an entirely new genre.” - Flood on “Under Your Window”

"Quality songwriting" - The Needle Drop on "Crash Pad" & "King For A Day"

Here's what Jaar stated on his website on the creative process during out the making of this ambient masterpiece

"The music comes from a desire to feel everything -- a few years ago, I stopped drinking alcohol, smoking, consuming caffeine, eating animals, etc., and, for a period of time, I also quarantined myself alone somewhere on the other side of the world to be able to work on music for months on end. I didn’t want to keep feeding the system. Its hunger, its past. I didn’t want to work from ambition. Where I would work to impress first, and love second. I wanted presence first. Love first. I thought that if I had this privilege and this luck, to be able to talk to people through sound, then I better work on myself &get rid of negative shards within me. I didn't want to unwittingly throw them back into the world.

Of course, this didn't happen. (Sorry..!) The more I tried to get away from negativity, the more it kept piling up in a dark room, but as shards of sound. A lot of these shards can be heard in the last Against All Logic album, and countless things you'll never hear (thank goodness!). It made no sense to me that the more I tried to escape negativity, the more it could surface in the creative process. But the shards kept piling up and I had to accept the fact that the darkness that I was trying to get away from would always rear its head. Regardless of what I abstained from. And even more so when trying to orient myself towards the positive. Hopefully Cenizas only shows darkness so as to show a path out of it. I want this music to heal and help in thinking through difficult questions about one’s self, and one’s relationship to the state of things. We are living in a time of complete transformation, a metamorphosis— and the transformations are happening within as well. There is potential for great healing and great destruction. "

What do you do when pain blots out joy? How do you learn to take care of yourself? What happens when the things you think are helping end up doing the most harm? 'Auto-Pain' is the Sophomore album from Deeper, a record that finds the band embracing open space, using synths to create shadows where bricks of guitars once would’ve blocked out the sun. The group — singer and guitarist Nic Gohl, bassist Drew McBride, and drummer Shiraz Bhatti — were all graduates of Chicago’s rich DIY scene who came together around their love of Wire, Devo, Gang of Four, and Television. While the new record is still within the Great Lakes post-punk tradition of their debut, the album isn’t as insular as its predecessor; it’s less interested in pile-driving and more willing to dwell in liminal spaces. Guitars enter the picture precisely, locked bass grooves propel things forward. Drummer Shiraz Bhatti, who is half-Pakistani and half-Native American, embraced the drumming patterns he’d heard growing up at pow-wows, channeling the anxieties of his heritage into his playing and keeping the group grounded when they switch into all-out percussive attack. The result is an album both more nuanced and catchy.

Auto-Pain represents the constant wave of depression felt by many in everyday life. Stemmed from Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, Auto-Pain is a concept meant to be an inverse to soma, a pill in the book which makes everything numb. The idea of auto-pain is to epitomize the desire to return to a connection with thoughts and clarity, which comes at the expense of feeling everything simultaneously. The album artwork features the now-demolished Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago capturing the band’s rounded-off brutalism, and the album title appears in Urdu, a nod to drummer Shiraz Bhatti’s Pakistani heritage. The record was recorded and mixed by Chicago scene luminary Dave Vetraino (Lala Lala, Dehd) and mastered at Chicago Mastering by Greg Obis (Ne-Hi, Melkbelly).

One thing you won’t be able to avoid on Bambara’s Stray is death. It’s everywhere and inescapable, abstract and personified – perhaps the key to the whole record. Death, however, won’t be the first thing that strikes you about the group’s fourth – and greatest – album to date. That instead will be its pulverising soundscape; by turns, vast, atmospheric, cool, broiling and at times – on stand out tracks like “Sing Me To The Street” and “Serafina” – simply overwhelming.

Bambara – twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh, singer/guitarist and drummer respectively, and bassist William Brookshire – have been evolving their midnight-black noise into something more subtle and expansive ever since the release of their 2013 debut Dreamviolence. That process greatly accelerated on 2018’s Shadow On Everything, their first on Wharf Cat and a huge stride forward for the band both lyrically and sonically.

Now 50 years after it began, Omni is boldly carrying the post-punk torch into a current array of modern challenges with Networker, their third record and first for the legendary Sub Pop label. While the biting guitar leads throughout Networker bring Omni’s sound to the border of punk, singer Philip Frobos’ nonchalant vocal delivery acts as a cooling agent, leading the band back into calm territories.

"Secrets & Escapes" is a compendium of Brother Ali's time spent with Evidence, over the course of three trips to California, recording in a Venice garage with no regard for pleasing the internet or competing with the music industry. Evidence chopped up records on old-school samplers and ran them through a compressor (2 track) so they couldn’t be re-arranged or mixed. Brother Ali sat with the mic and spit rhymes as they came to him, without writing or organizing them into songs. Ev smoked a lot of weed, Ali prayed extensively, and their influences on each other can be heard in the recordings. Any time they made something that reminded them of what they’ve become known for, they threw it away and started something new. Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and CS Armstrong came through to bless the project with contributions, too.
"Secrets & Escapes" is the result of two friends making rap music for no other reason than because it’s what they love to do.

The Shivas are a rock and roll band from Portland, Oregon formed in 2006. In the years since forming they have brought their raucous dance party to almost all 50 states, and over 25 countries worldwide.
There’s a ritualistic quality to the way the band whips themselves into a spectral sonic frenzy on every track, regardless of tone or tempo. Though the Shivas are here for the party, there are no sunshine sounds to be found, even when the band is proclaiming the joys of listening to the radio (“Playing on the Radio”) with lots of “Ba ba ba’s” in the chorus for everyone to sing along with.

Incidental Music offers insistent, driving, pulsing rhythms across long songs. Marching synthesisers move those songs along, picking up the pace and tying it all together. There are wails of guitar, a high, slightly quavering lead voice and a sense that this is psychedelia reconfigured for modern times: anxious, not beatific. It is, to be frank, not a million miles from what Hookworms were doing before their split.

Heaven Surrounds You is a coming of age epic, inspired by the many cult films Surf Curse has cherished through out their young adulthood that are referenced across the album’s tracklist. Surf Curse’s songwriting and instrumental orchestration has matured on their third full length LP, adding layers of polish to their traditionally rough and visceral sound. Rattigan and Rubeck worked with veteran indie producer Jarvis Taveniere, carefully crafting their most lush and vulnerable record to date, during the fall of 2018. Heaven Surrounds You, satisfies the energy and passion that old fans would expect from a Surf Curse record, but expands the band’s songwriting to envelope new audiences into their cinematic sound.
