Sloane Freemont - Create What You Speak Podcast

How often do we say the phrase, “have a great day”? Have you ever really thought of what it takes to actually have a great day? How can you set yourself up to make sure you have a great day? And what that might entail?

In this episode, we are going to find out exactly how to do that. Joining me today is Jarrett Robertson, author of the book; "Make It a Great Day – How to Feel Awesome So That You Can Help Others". There are so many “how to” books out there that involve time, energy, money, resources, memberships, coaches, etc., that you can become intimidated by it all, and it can be hard to follow through. Jarrett makes the process simple and fun and shows how easy it can be to take control of our days.

Jarrett and I cover how we can make small changes in our daily routines to ensure we make it a great day. We touch on how the "news" and social media impact us and the brain's response to this (the research he found is fascinating!),  how hormones impact how we feel, what amygdala hijacking is and how our emotions get involved.  We talk about the importance of setting yourself up for success with sleep (actually treating it as a bigger deal than most of us probably do),  how that voice in your head holding you back is usually wrong and what it really takes to make it a great day. Jarrett offers amazing insight and a quote that will really help keep you centered and making better decisions.

Many of us talk about being happy & think about being happy, but are we really taking the steps to get there? I know in my own life, I can look at times where I wanted nothing more than to be happy, but my thoughts and actions were the opposite of that. It's easy to get caught up in the negativity and that negativity takes up a lot of space energetically. I wonder if we realize the cost of that energy taking up space?

I had an experience over the holidays that I wanted to share with you this week. It was an epiphany I had about separation and how I purposely choose separation as a form of protection, and then get mad, angry, upset, etc. that I'm separate.
Once I was able to see what was happening in this particular experience, I could see the patterns across all areas of my life with my relationship with my partner, my friendships, co-workers, etc. Additionally, this awareness that I uncovered is also another layer of healing I thought I was done with. Funny how that works, just when we think we are done, there are always other layers!
In this episode I share my story of choosing separation, and what I've done to soften that belief so I can choose something better. As a bonus in this episode, I share some thoughts on how you can disassociate yourself from those thoughts that want to come up so you don't become them. Instead, you get to easily choose something different. Repeatedly choosing something different will give you a new experience and one I know we are all in need of in 2022!

I talk a lot on the show about what we experience as humans. What we go through, the questions we ask the universe and the journey life takes us on. It's an ongoing process where we are always learning and my goal with the show is to continue to explore the journey and encourage that growth. Life is messy. Yet, through many of the challenges we face, we often find our strength, our perseverance, and our resilience to overcome the difficult times.

Here we are at the end of another year, which seemed to somehow go both slow and fast at the same time. How that happens, I will never know.

In this episode, I do a short recap of some of the bigger things I was both surprised by and proud of in 2021 on a personal level. I think you will find that you have some of the same when you look back over the past year.

I also share my experience of free-falling, or letting go of control, and making the decision to not have all the answers but still move ahead anyway. And surprisingly, I’ve found relief in that!

You’ll hear about some easy things you can do to leave the old behind (like really easy, some just take a minute or two) and also some suggestions on how to get clear on what you want to bring in for the new year. Instead of focusing on the “things”, what if we focused on ourselves first? And by ourselves, I mean our energetic self and lining up with that first?

My intention with this episode is to help you think out of the typical “new year’s resolutions” box and set (and then be able to stand) in meaningful intentions. What is synchronicity and how does it show up in our lives? This week my guest is Etan Ilfeld, the creator of The Synchronicity Oracle Deck. Etan and I have a lively & fun discussion about really understanding what synchronicity is and how we can use it to our advantage to tap into our unconscious mind. Inventions are one of the most exciting examples of creating what you speak. Taking an idea that started as a thought form and going through the process to bring that idea to life is an amazing example of the power of directing our thoughts! On this episode, my guest is Christine Brown, founder of the Kind Cup. The Kind Cup is a menstrual cup, and if you are not familiar with what that is, we get into that on the show!

Christine shares her experience of having an idea that just wouldn't stop tugging at her, going through the process of bringing the idea to life and what that experience was like. Christine has some great advice for anyone who has an idea and isn't quite sure what to do with it (hint: go for it!). As a fellow inventor, this conversation with Christine was so fun and also a great reminder of how we all have something pulling at us and that you only get one life, so why not go after it!

More About Christine: Kind Cup designer and founder Christine Brown launched the company with a vision of creating a menstrual cup that sets a new standard for quality, sustainability, and accessibility. Christine was driven to design and develop a form-fitting cup to better fit the natural curves of our bodies and movements. Christine’s design has dramatically improved the menstrual cup by making it ergonomically correct, more trusted, and comfortable. The Kind Cup also makes periods more green and sustainable, not to mention affordable, for all people.

An institutional design specialist and lifelong design hobbyist, Christine is passionate about optimizing the world for inclusivity as a queer, hard-of-hearing, and non-binary individual. They started Kind Cup while working as an American Sign Language instructor at Ventura College in Ventura, California, using their teaching earnings to fund the company. In teaching and international education administration roles, Christine was committed to creating intersectional learning environments that supported curiosity and empowered students to think critically.

Christine successfully applied their accessibility-focused design thinking to design and development roles at institutions as varied as the Siena School for Liberal Arts in Siena, Italy, and Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. At both institutions, they focused on increasing accessibility through Deaf Studies partnerships and programming. Christine also spent over ten years working as a research and development consultant for the family’s generations-old Rincon Del Mar Ranch, purveyors of specialty produce, and a patented variety of cherimoya - a family specialty of subtropical fruits.

Christine, born into a long line of farmers and stewards of the land, has a deep appreciation for nature and lives in the middle of an avocado orchard in Carpinteria, California. This week my guest is Daniel Hodge from Thrive Lot and we are talking about autodidactism, entrepreneurship and empowerment. Daniel and I have an expansive conversation about thinking outside of the box, how learning doesn't have to come from an institution and how you can learn things faster than you might think that makes a difference in your life. You are never too old to start learning something and you don't have to get a degree to do something and then have a career from it! Entrepreneurship is a true example of taking an idea and bringing it to life; creating what you speak!

Daniel grew up training his autodidactism from a young age. His notion of reality and its malleability were manifested through homeschooling and a free-range childhood. Whether through drawing, inventing, reading, writing, playing music, singing, and finding infinite ways to stoke his creative fire, he never experienced boredom until attending public school. In high school, Daniel decided he wasn’t interested in status games, and instead focused on developing his athletic prowess, balanced with a pursuit of the arts. His undergraduate studies led him to explore Philosophy, Economics, and Political Theory. Obsessed with why humans think the way we do, and what cultural, socioeconomic, and political priors serve to influence and underpin our thinking, he worked on developing his analytical and critical thinking skills.

Fast forward to now, Daniel has designed and built over 30 websites and apps, along with a half dozen architectural installations and projects, including a 30,000 Sq. Ft. Coworking facility in the heart of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He founded three businesses and helped friends and clients catalyze another ten. His love of systems led him to work briefly with the Tennessee Valley Corridor, a nonprofit focused on STEM-focused public-private partnerships. While all of these projects and experiences were important to growing his skill stack, business acumen, and design accolades, none of them presented the opportunity to synthesize his various talents into a streamlined purpose. Creating "our" reality by changing your thoughts has been the focus of my show over the past 4 years. What is the full experience of being yourself, without all the distractions? Isn't that an interesting question to think about? Many times I have these great conversations with my friends and after we are done talking I say, "that should have been a podcast!". So this week, I invited one of my very best friends Shannon to come on the show and do what we do best, talk things out! I'm calling this "unscripted conversations with friends" because we don't have a script for this show. The only thing we decided on was our topic - Breaking Out of Mental Quarantine Habits and the rest is a real life conversation between two friends!

One of the things I love about my friendship with Shannon is I can be 100% authentic and real with her and while we do vent it out when needed, we are both solution oriented. We don't just leave it at the vent session, we come up with a plan to help each other out, no matter what this situation is.

In this conversation, Shannon and I share some of our struggles with moving on with life post quarantine and we talk about solutions to move past the struggle and on to the life we want to live. I hope you enjoy this unscripted conversation with friends!
