JOHANNESBURG - Not millions, but at least R1000 000 000 is stolen from Eskom EVERY month - according to outgoing - fleeing for his and his family's life, CEO André de Ruyter.

André De Ruyter says his attempts to stop the scourge could be behind last year's attempt on his life…

On 12 December 2022, De Ruyter tendered his resignation as the CEO of Eskom. The following day at work, he consumed a cup of coffee that had unknowingly to him been laced with cyanide. After he received medical treatment, a case of attempted murder was opened with the South African Police Service.

In December 2022, power cuts reached their severest levels ever. That same month, it emerged that de Ruyter had been criticized by Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy and Chairperson of the ruling African National Congress. Mantashe called De Ruyter a 'policeman' and accused Eskom of 'agitating for the overthrow of the state'. After these remarks were reported, De Ruyter resigned, citing a loss of support from 'the broader political economy'.

Ghaleb Cachalia, Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises of the Democratic Alliance, South Africa's official opposition, accused Mantashe of a 'relentless campaign against a man who despite having one hand tied behind his back' attempted to fight corruption. He further said that Pravin Gordhan, the Minister of Public Enterprises, had been 'powerless in the face of Mantashe'. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa welcomed his resignation, citing his 'incompetence'; it further called for Gordhan's resignation.

In January 2023, de Ruyter stated power cuts would continue for two years.

On 22 February 2023, de Ruyter resigned with immediate effect, chief financial officer Calib Cassim has been appointed as interim CEO.

Last year, I travelled to Pretoria to meet energy minister Gwede Mantashe. It’s become a tradition for Mantashe to summon me to his office, albeit after I’ve done the begging for a one-on-one interview.

On that day, the minister, who was already facing a barrage of criticism for his handling of the energy crisis, slipped in that Eskom chief executive Andre de Ruyter was “not the fixer” that Eskom needed to rescue it from the crisis.

What Mantashe was saying was that De Ruyter might have the necessary skills to be a competent chief executive, but the power utility needed a super-chief executive. It needed a person who was innovative, daring and brave enough to pull the utility out of the grave.

I had come to Mantashe to talk about the ANC. He — the chairperson of the party running for re-election — was the story, but I left with something even better, needless to say, it was the story on everyone’s lips that week.

It’s incredible to think that now, months after the minister made this statement, he could have been on to something.

Prior to the Battle of Blood River, a Boer diplomatic group led by Piet Retief as well as Voortrekker women and children were massacred by Zulu forces. On 16 December 1838, angered by the attack, 470 Boers led by Andries Pretorius defeated +20 0000 Zulus in Battle.

Die Zoeloes het herhaaldelik die laer onsuksesvol aangeval, todat Pretorius ná twee uur 'n groep perderuiters beveel het om die laer te verlaat en die Zoeloes aan te val. In die struweling het Pretorius ook 'n assegaaiwond aan sy linkerhand opgedoen.

Van die Voortrekkers is uiteindelik slegs drie Voortrekkers gewond en nie een dood nie; dit teenoor meer as 3 000 Zoeloekrygers wat omgekom het. 16 Desember is 'n openbare vakansiedag in Suid-Afrika; voor 1994 was dit as Geloftedag bekend - tans as Versoeningsdag. (Wat 'n skande is!)

Chief Justice Mogoeng said people should be spared any vaccine that sought to ‘advance a satanic agenda of the mark of the beast’.
South Africa’s chief justice has dismissed concerns that he may be endangering people’s health by linking corona virus vaccines to a “satanic agenda”.

Mogoeng, who frequently displays his Christian faith while performing his duties, prayed at a public event on Thursday that people should be spared any vaccine that sought to “advance a satanic agenda of the mark of the beast”.

Addressing questions about this at a news conference on Friday to release a judiciary report, he said: “If there is any vaccine that is deliberately intended to do harm to people, that vaccine must never see the light of day. I cry unto God to stop it.”

Mogoeng added: “I don’t think the vaccine must ever be compulsory … You can’t impose a vaccine on people. Why should you?”

The Sunday Times Daily news site quoted Barry Schoub, a virology professor at Wits University and head of a ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19, as saying: “It is unfortunate that someone of that stature is misleading people because vaccines are such a major part of controlling this epidemic and it is unfortunate that someone with such influence is opposing efforts to control it.”

But Mogoeng said he would not be silenced: “I don’t care about the consequences. We’ve been quiet for far too long, toeing the line.”
