High drive working dog, mindset work

Cayde is a perfect example of the majority of dogs we work with. He’s HIGHLY trained, he’s titled in competition, and yet, in the REAL world, he’s having a hard time.

He’s high strung, explosive, and yet his owner has an amazing skillset. She’s spent the first two years of his life raising and training Cayde to be a performance dog. He’s a machine.

But unfortunately the 5% of Cayde’s life that he’s on the field isn’t transferring to the times he’s not. That’s called reality as he is a pet dog 95% of the time. And we know he can do better than that.

This is why we are always stressing how obedience and behavior are NOT the same.

A well trained dog will do what you tell him to do, but a well behaved dog will choose to make good decisions on his own.

Right now, Cayde doesn’t know how to function outside of a well choreographed routine, and that’s why he’s here.

He’s electric around pretty much any stimuli. He whines and pants and drools pretty much any time he “tries” to relax, and for a dog to be worked up around the clock like that, let’s be real, it’s not healthy.

It took a bit to see his reactivity come out because we’ve been implementing so much structure with him. We were actually wondering if we ever would! But he did show us this week, and we were able to work him through it

This is a huge win for Cayde because prior to training with us, corrections or redirection of any sort only ramped him UP more

He’s now deescalating when told to do so, and his recovery time is much faster than before too.

So even though he exploded on a dog, we don’t consider this a “setback” at all. It’s a huge win because we were able to finally address the issue and teach him what we DO want in situations like this.

Cayde has a long way to go still. And we’re documenting his entire rehab and state of mind training.
