Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 7: A Trap is Sprung, part 2
Mako Reactor 5 is guarded by the Airbuster robot, which looks kind of scary, so Avalanche try to find some countermeasures to tilt the odds in their favor. Barret also hatches a Grinchy plan. This is the second major dungeon in the game, although it's fairly straightforward. There are also a lot of embellishments compared to the original FF7 in this part.

This is a Let's Play of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Normal difficulty with no commentary. The goal is to find hidden content, important details in the environmental storytelling, and interesting material related to fan theories. Any interesting material found will be grouped into smaller Discoveries and Extras videos. Hopefully by the end we will better understand the story, lore, and world building.

This playthrough will be baseline reference material for a future commentated Hard playthrough. The Hard playthrough will focus on story, lore, game design, fan theories, and whether or not Remake part 2 is going to be worth the wait after certain plot twists. You know which ones.

The playthrough is on a PS4 Pro with an SSD.

Thanks for watching!

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum
The dialogue from the Shinra Middle Manager in chapter three. His arc starts a bit earlier in chapter 2, but initially he's a riddle. He seems to be a good nuclear family man, yet he's caught in a hard place and encountering a lot of pressures. He's working for the evil Shinra corporation; he faces the various demands from such a job; he's trying to climb the corporate ladder in a large company; he is responsible for a spouse and daughter and at least two employees; he can seemingly only afford to live in the poorest part of town; and extremists are threatening his livelihood for reasons he doesn't understand.

For now, this manager is not sure what to do and trying to put on a brave face, to project a confidence he may or may not actually feel for those he's in charge of looking after. However, you know that old adage about what people are really like... People reveal their true selves when under pressure, and, if anyone is under plenties of pressures, it's this guy.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum
What Johnny's Father (yes, that's also really his name in the game), has to say in Chapter 3. He may be the source of the grappling hooks that Avalanche use. A lot of these NPCs have character stories that turn into mini plotlines throughout the game. Rather than directly influencing the plot, they're mostly for worldbuilding. Usually they turn into complete character arcs. My guess is that this is inspired by the Trails series of JRPGs.

Johnny's parents go a long way towards explaining how extra Johnny is. His father is an optimist, bombastic, (speaking at great length about things he knows little or nothing about), misses obvious things, thinks everything naturally works out well, seems to be relatively unsuccessful, may be some short of shady businessman or con man, may be involved with organized crime (which would most likely mean Wall Market), and seems to always assume the best of people, even when he really probably should not.

In contrast, Johnny's Mother is a worrier and appears to be overly limiting. No wonder Johnny is out of control, rebellious, and a thrill seeker... and no wonder he's not so good with life decisions or money. Who was he going to learn those things from?

Both parents may be based on common tropes of an Industrial Revolution family.

0:13 Johnny's Father: What I'm trying to say is, you and me, we're not so different--and certainly not complete strangers.
0:20 Johnny's Father: In fact, I want you to think of me as family. You know, an uncle or maybe a distant relative.
0:29 Johnny's Father: Oh, while I have you here, you wouldn't happen to be interested in grappling guns, would you? Great for getting up or down in a jiffy!
0:37 Johnny's Father: I ordered some for a client, but I accidentally added a zero, and now I have a ton to spare.

1:28 Johnny's Father: Oh. I don't think I've had a chance to introduce myself yet. I'm Johnny's father.
1:33 Johnny's Father: I'm sure you're terribly worried about him too--aren't you, Tifa?
1:37 Johnny's Father: That's my boy. I'll have to remember to tell him that when he finally comes back home.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 7: A Trap is Sprung, part 1
Cloud, Tifa, and Barret enter Mako Reactor 5. Remember, this is a sneaking mission. However, unless Avalanche are very careful, they are going to get busted. Is it time for the hammer to fall? Or can they evade all of Shinra's traps?

There's a lot of level design homages to the original FF7 in this section as well as some references to the Underwater Reactor. Another thing to note is that Sony California did a lot of changes to Tifa, but... left underage Tifa untouched. We'll call that a mix of "interesting oversight" and "oh, Square-Enix..." there.

This episode ends at an unusual-seeming place because of a small capture problem. It was caught quickly, so only a few seconds were lost.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 6: Light the Way, part 1
Welcome to the Sector 4 Underplate. This is the first full-fledged dungeon in FF7 Remake. It's pretty short, but it's a maze which can artificially extend the length. Perhaps it is also somewhat Zelda-influenced? There's also some lore about Sector 4, concerning how sectors under the upper plate get an artificial day/night cycle, and some new enemies with slightly more advanced mechanics (baby steps).

This episode and the next are both going to end at strange-seeming points because of small technical difficulties, although if I wasn't pointing it out here, I wonder how many would notice?

Crab Battle! The conclusion of Chapter 5. After the end of Chapter 5, part 2, the party was split into two -- East and West. Also, look at the size of that thing! Those massive claws could tear a knife to shreds. It looks almost as deadly as a Kenyan Mangrove Crab, which can take out tanks and snakes for breakfast.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 5: Dogged Pursuit, part 3
Time for an interlude: What happens if Cloud goes the wrong way in the Corkscrew Tunnels? Turns out it's a lot like taking the stairs. Tired of constantly being told what to do, Cloud snaps and decides he's going to go for a jog to clear his head. The only problem is that his little jaunt is going the wrong way. It's also a semi-decent EXP grinding route (well, for this game), but grinding isn't required to quickly get max level.

This is a full episode and not an extra because this is what I did for the playthrough. Otherwise the party's EXP totals would have gotten an unexplained boost after the last episode.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum
This is a proof of concept and a quick guide. The trick is to use the Doomrats side quest in Chapter 3. The Stagger Effect Part 3 is commonly gotten by fighting the Fat Chocobo in chapter 9. The game gives you credit for doing things ahead of time, so I think it is possible to complete part 3 in chapter 3, even before ever completing part 1 or part 2, although you won't get the reward until you can turn in part 3 to Chadley. The reward is the Parry materia, one of the best materia in the game.

Common problems I've seen some players run into:
1) The game doesn't make it clear that using Tifa is the easiest way to increase Stagger above 200%.
2) By the time you get the quest for part 3, Tifa isn't in your party.
3) Most enemies die too quickly to get to 200%.

Description:
"Report 12
The Stagger Effect Pt. 3
While analyzing the stagger effect, I verified the existence of a peculiar behavior presumed to be an acute response to stress. Theories suggest this effect can be harnessed as materia.
Further field data required before pursuing.

Conditions: Increase stagger damage bonus to 200%.

New Materia: Parry Materia"

Other thoughts:
1) "Doomrats" is up there for silliest monster name in recent memory. "Doom rats" isn't much better.
2) Sorry about some of the text being hard to read. I'm brand new to video editing but slowly improving. The instructions are repeated in my comment below the video, unless Bitchute deletes it, which seems to happen.

0:00 Location of the Doomrats
0:22 They're weak to Ice, but Ice is not not needed or optimal, IMO. You want the rats alive and fairly full health until staggered.
0:39 Power up Tifa's special attack to "Rise and Fall".
0:53 Tifa's regular attacks will now quickly increase enemies' stagger meters.
1:09 Cloud's "Focus Thrust" helps build up the Stagger meter, but Tifa is faster at it. It's better to use Cloud to heal.
1:40 I'm building up the stagger meters of all 3 enemies to make the demo easier.
1:50 Once a Doomrat is staggered, use Rise and Fall, then spam Omnistrike and/or Whirling Uppercut until you reach 200%.

It turns out the Junk Dealer will, in fact, update his stock of items like he says. I thought it was cut content or a lie. This is a way to get some discounts and an Elixir. The main things you have to do are buy out whatever special item he has, and then enter combat. As far as I can tell, his inventory first resets after Nuisance in the Factory and then again for every battle other than the one for the Johnny quest. You do not ever have to buy any of the Potions from him.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 4: Mad Dash, part 6
The conclusion of Chapter 4. The Sector 7 Slum residents all have new dialogue again. Avalanche has made their plans and apparently sent some kind of threatening manifesto to the press. Shinra has issued a counter-statement and started up the trains again. Something strange happened in front of 7th Heaven, but most people apparently couldn't see the spectres, and, even those who could, like Avalanche, aren't sure what was going on. What does it mean for the future? There's only one way to find out.

Cloud Strife, a hard-hearted, crotchety man obsessed with money is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and then 3 spirits: the ghosts of Sector 7 waifus past, present, and future. They warn him to change his ways because this is his last hope for redemption. Cloud learns that others have been suffering worse than him, particularly Jessie, Barret's underpaid technical expert, and Barret's daughter Marlene. Despite this, Jessie and Marlene still choose to find happiness in their lives. ...with apologies to the spectre of Charles Dickens.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum
This is a narrative recap of night 1 in the slums. This is probably more how the developers imagined the player would play through this section, without any dilly dallying, shilly shallying, zuru zuru zuru zuru, or dragging weights around. Custom subtitles have been added to the crowd scene at the beginning, since there weren't any subtitles there.

These bonus discovery videos are interesting things I find in my Let's Play, or extra dialog options, or hidden content, or similar.

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Chapter 3: Home Sweet Slum
There's some dialogue at the beginning of Chapter 3 that doesn't have subtitles. I've recreated the game's font and added subtitles of my own. This is not guaranteed to be correct, since it's probably meant to be crowd noise and is only what I can make out. Recreating the font took a lot of time. This is only an alpha version of the font, but it's good enough for now.

These bonus discovery videos are interesting things I find in my Let's Play, or extra dialog options, or hidden content, or similar.

Cloud sets off on Jessie's secret mission. Along the way we'll learn what happens when a 2020-style Final Fantasy character meets the old 1997-style. Also, I really do think there's an uncanny resemblance to both Seifer (an FF8 character) and Sephiroth.

I make weeby videos about Final Fantasy VII with obsessive attention to details others miss, because I can. I'm a longtime fan, data miner, and modder of the original FF7PC (1998). For now I'm doing content related to Final Fantasy 7 Remake part 1 (2020), since that just came out.

The Remake has a Fight Club-style plot twist, which is the key focus here. The original game had a legendarily complex plot which was well thought out, for the most part, and I'm trying to use existing information from the game to figure out if future installments in the plot are going to be similarly worth my time, ...or if it's going to end in "they have no idea what they're doing" disappointment like Lost, Game of Thrones Season 8, the Disney Star Wars sequels, the Battlestar Galactica reboot, any number of Stephen King novels, most recent Final Fantasy games, and similar. I'm definitely hoping it's going to be good.
