Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans are American citizens but don’t have congressional representation and do not vote in federal elections. And since there can be no taxation without representation, Puerto Rico does not pay U.S. Federal #taxes.

This strategy isn’t new: Boeing’s HQ was lured from WA to IL with the promise of zero state taxes (which is probably partly why Illinois had legalized cannabis), Google’s European headquarters is in Ireland. The “double Irish with a Dutch sandwich”- a tax avoidance technique employed by certain large corporations.

Puerto Rico previously offered incentives to the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industry, which has left a number of #GMP (Good Manufacturing Process) facilities available on the island.

#PuertoRico tax benefits for #crypto should be on your radar as well as #Act60 “The Individual Investors Act.” The gains in both your stock & crypto portfolios are considered Puerto Rican sourced income and taxed at a 0% capital gains rate.

Act 60 states that individuals and businesses will pay zero capital gains taxes on assets acquired AFTER moving to Puerto Rico.

This makes Puerto Rico the only place in the world where US citizens can avoid paying overburdening U.S. federal income taxes.

Farm automation technology addresses major issues like a rising global population, farm labor shortages, and changing consumer preferences. The benefits of automating traditional farming processes are monumental.

Labor is over 50% of the cost to grow a farm and 55% of farmers say they are impacted by labor shortages. Because of this, 31% of farmers are moving to less labor-intensive crops.

There is a misconception that mechanization displaces farm labor and encourages rural– urban migration, but the opposite is true: mechanization improves well-being and increases decent work opportunities.

Indoor cannabis cultivation has always been intimately bound to the technology supporting it.

For growers, the most urgent technology needs and compelling cost-savings opportunities are harvest-related. Despite mechanized seed-to-bud efficiencies, the post-grow clipping and trimming of leaves and stems is largely done by hand.

Ideally, growers wouldn't have any humans involved in post-harvest because of the higher risk of contamination. If farms could it would completely automate the post-harvest phase and reassign employees to inspection duties. But most can't. Not yet, anyway.

In modern cannabis production, our biggest motivator for technological advancement is no longer secrecy: it is profitability. By 2020, innovation in horticultural technology was dedicated almost exclusively to operational efficiency.

Looking specifically at automation in cultivation, commercial growers are using computers, robots, machines, and more to increase profitability on several fronts.

I visited 20 stores in Seattle on 4/20 for the 6th year in a row. I've started to notice the 4/20 deals generally become the everyday low price at discount retailers approximately two years later.

Since 2017 we've noticed other various trends and anomalies including #butdenter and customer favorites (they still prefer flower).

April 20th, 2022 should have been a big day for US cannabis companies. However consistent weekly sales equivalent to the discounts seen on 4/20 weren’t compelling enough to draw out the large crowds typically seen during the 420 holiday.

I'm wondering if COVID ruined 4/20 for retail cannabis shops who had to offer steep discounts and merchandise in order to draw in more shoppers during the pandemic?

Last Prisoner Project emerged from a kind of ugliness of the cannabis industry: Depending on which state and which year (as well as what color your skin is, in many cases) you ate an edible, lit a blunt, or hit a bong, doing that exact thing could give you a jail sentence or be a complete nonissue.

Legalization criss-crosses the country, thousands sit in jail cells for nonviolent marijuana offenses, some even for life sentences, because they bought or sold the stuff, transported it across state lines, or possessed it before legalization.

Imagine sitting in a cell for years, decades, or even for life, convicted of an activity that is no longer a crime, while thousands of other people build intergenerational wealth doing exactly the same thing.

That is the situation that over 40,000 cannabis prisoners face today in the United States alone, while countless others languish in jails and prisons worldwide.

The Last Prisoner Project has one singular mission: to set them free.

The Last Prisoner Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform. As the United States moves away from the criminalization of cannabis, giving rise to a major new industry, there remains the fundamental injustice inflicted upon those who have suffered criminal convictions and the consequences of those convictions.

Through legal intervention, public education and legislative advocacy, we work to redress the past and continuing harms of our country’s unjust and ineffective approach to drug policy.

Washington State, for example, had almost $1.5 Billion in cannabis sales last year, however sales figures have declined 6 months in a row, with the exception of a Christmas boost thanks in part to the holidays with the in-laws and New Years Eve.

What’s the Significance?:
Some analysts are claiming there’s a correlation between cannabis sales and COVID restrictions easing.

The theory is that people had more idle time at home during the lockdowns, with extra income from stimulus checks, so many of those people turned to cannabis products.
Now that lockdowns are over, the theory goes that those people are now using less cannabis.

So What Happened?:
Total Sales= $103.9
YOY Sales Growth= -7.0% (Sales growth topped 28% prior to Covid)
Avg Basket= $33.47
Basket Count= 3.1
Brand Concentration= 22%

Sales patterns were similar to other states, with declines starting right before the summer in May.

The Impact:
The prevailing theory of attributing lower sales to the end of the lockdowns might be part of the reason, however, I believe the impact of inflation can not be overstated.

The same economic factors hitting other business sectors are also affecting the cannabis industry. Cannabis sales aren’t falling just because people are trying to enjoy the outdoors, it’s also falling as inflation and gasoline prices are rising.

Inflationary Pressures:
Decreased average basket size trend continues, while the number of transactions continues to increase- indicating consumers are still going to #potshops more often, but spending less per transaction. This could mean consumers are trying to avoid higher minimum delivery requirements and opting to go to dispensaries and buying only what they need instead.

Consolidation:
Brand concentration has remained relatively steady, however, it's anticipated that consolidation will pick up as Canadian companies and private equity and venture capitalists come into the space in anticipation of U.S. Federal legalization to snap up under-valued cannabis prospects in hopes of a legalization rally that'll spark the next wave of cannabis stock speculation.

Has COVID ruined 4/20 for retail cannabis shops who had to offer steep discounts and merchandise in order to draw in more shoppers during the pandemic?

April 20th, 2022 should have been a big day for US cannabis companies, but after visiting 20 stores on 4/20 for the 6th year in a row, I’m anticipating disappointing numbers.

After two years of social distancing and canceled events due to COVID-19, the industry was expecting a huge celebration on the biggest cannabis holiday of the year.

After all, 420 has been the largest single day of retail cannabis sales each year since legalization- EXCEPT during the pandemic!

Strictly looking at the data, you’d expect to see the same consistent patterns on 4/20 when sales surge as customers enjoy massive discounts.

Historically, the increase in total sales was largely driven by an increase in total transaction volume, as there were more people shopping during the 4/20 holiday.

However, with consistent weekly sales equivalent to the discounts seen on 4/20, it looked like people weren’t compelled to come out and deal with the madness surrounding the 420 holiday.

In the past we’ve seen total basket volume in Canada increase by 52% on 4/20/21 and 86% in the US.

I think more people stayed home, utilized delivery services when possible, and bought their cannabis on their regular shopping day, avoiding the congested parking lots and long lines.

Retail shops used to use 420 as their black friday event to reach profitability for the year.

But it looks like CFOs & CPAs will be busy recalculating balance sheets and proforma financial statements if/when New Years Eve takes the number one slot again.

There has been a significant shift in cannabis debt issuance from equity-linked debt to straight debt.

In the early debt days of 2018, nearly all cannabis debt issues were convertibles, and many issues had additional attached warrants to achieve total coverages of over 100%.

As the U.S. MSOs became EBITDA positive in 2020, issuance of straight coupon debt began in earnest. Most of the top MSOs have now completed straight coupon issues in $100M+ sizes at rates between 8% and 10%.

This shift reflects the industry's growing maturity and profitability.

Summary

*Sin clauses, SRI and ESG may come at a financial cost
*Sin stock’s benefits in addition to being recession proof, generating strong and consistent earnings, and having limited competition
*Historical evidence on the performance supports sin stock’s higher alpha
*Sin stocks plausible underperformance due to “shunned-stock hypothesis”

The likelihood for several new cannabis markets to legalize by 2030 will drive combined U.S. legal sales past $72 billion in that year, according to New Frontier Data’s latest analysis of state legalization efforts.

Last year, the U.S. legal cannabis market was worth an estimated $26.5 billion, and this year it is expected to top annual sales of $32 billion.

And yet, Canadian cannabis producer Eve & Co receives creditor protection, while Cannabis producer CannTrust just emerged from creditor protection.

A new study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that 30% of those who use marijuana may have some degree of cannabis use disorder.

The study claims patients could depend on cannabis to keep their issues under control, like chronic back pain and anxiety. In 2015, the same group found about 4 million people in the United States met the diagnostic criteria for a marijuana use disorder.
