The Battle for Caen - 1944

July 23rd

We arrived about two miles south of Caen at 0230 hrs, after a march of four miles, ankle deep in mud, and we rested at this position throughout the next three days.

July 25th

Bombed during the night by enemy planes.

July 27th

Our orders to move were cancelled.

July 29th

Still resting two miles east of Caen. We’ve now been informed, that the reason we are resting in this position is because we are in full view of the enemy. They had to keep their crack Panzer Division on the opposite hill, thus not being able to move them to assist against the Americans at St Lo.

July 30th

We moved to a position one mile south of Bayeux. Still resting.

July 31st

We’ve received orders to move, this time into the Caumont Sector. We travelled in troop carriers for about fifteen miles and then we dug slit trenches to sleep in during the night.

August 1st

We moved off again at 0500 hrs going into the attack. We travelled in troop carriers for the first ten miles and then began marching. Five miles on and the roads became within the range of the German guns and mortars. There were a few casualties to X Company whilst marching along. Corporal Barbour was killed. I remember he was promoted to Corporal in the M.T. at the same time that I moved from the M.T. to 14 Platoon.

We marched a further distance of seven and a half miles then formed up to attack. The objective being a hill. The hill was captured in twenty minutes, there was no opposition. We dug in on top of the hill. Later in the day, we moved off again to attack the village of Le Courneur. Once again there was no opposition. The attack beginning at 2215 hrs and finishing at 2315 hrs. We dug in once again and were ordered to hold the village until dawn when we were informed that tanks would arrive to relieve us.

August 2nd

The tanks arrived at dawn.
Reconnaissance units reported the enemy to be twenty miles away. About noon we moved off again and captured the village seven miles ..

The Witching Hour is the darkest time of night.

In the ancient folklore, The Witching Hour is the entire period from midnight to 4:00am. All historical church records list that most occurrences of supernatural activity happen at this time, reaching a peak between the hours of 3:00 to 4:00am

Yet of all the creatures the common people feared, Witches were feared the most.
Able to hide in plain sight with no distinct recognizable features the church saw them as their biggest threat, especially during the Devils Hour.

Sorry for the delay uploading new content, my monetisation with YouTube has finally been sorted out and this will be a little three part series (forgive me as it seems something I have to do) showing the basic drawing, colouring/texturing and then video editing. Hope these are not too much of an irritation.

They will be short clips showing the process.

This room is not made in a 3D rendering program like a lot of creators, rather it is all hand drawn in GIMP (like Photoshop)

Thought I would try something different just for fun, went to explore a castle for a relaxing walk around.

The Manzanares El Real Castle was built in the 15th century by the 1st Duke of the Infantado, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. The building work was continued by his son Íñigo López de Mendoza, who enlisted the help of the architect Juan Guas, one of the leading exponents of the Late Gothic style in Castile, and architect to the Catholic Monarchs.

The Castle holds a strategic position overlooking the Segovia Cañada Real (or royal drovers’ road), which was used by the Mesta (the first cattle breeder guild in Europe that was operational from the 13th to the 19th centuries) to move livestock around Spain on a seasonal basis. The whole building is enhanced by the robust curtain walls and wall-walk. An imposing gatehouse protected by flanking towers gives way to the interior after crossing the old moat, which is filled in today

The castle was used by the Mendoza family for a little under a century, and was abandoned from 1530 onwards. The area gradually deteriorated over time and was used as a storehouse, stable and even as a cinema and school during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).
