After reading an article about the high rate of mental health issues among 18-29 year old liberal white women, I share my theory about the role Tumblr played in these statistics. And I share my perspective as being part of that demographic not too long.

I use a Harper's Bazaar article on what it means to be "hyper feminine" as a jumping off point to ramble about how looking feminine and being feminine are not the same thing. Acting feminine versus masculine is something I think about frequently, and I share a couple of anecdotes from my own life. Enjoy this installment of The Eighth Square's Corner, where I share a less edited version of my thoughts on a range of topics.

This is an off the cuff follow up to my video about the "letter of intent" to not give book deals to any members of the Trump administration, aka #NoBookDealsForTraitors. In the final installment of my series on #ownvoices, I discuss an article by a Young Adult author named Kat Rosenfield, about the negative impact the #ownvoices movement has had on authors. I also share some perspective about the economics of publishing as a business, and how it's contributed to the popularity of this "movement," and why it's probably here to stay (at least for awhile).

Random ramble about why the Alias comics are better than the Netflix adaptation, Jessica Jones. At some point, I'd love to talk about the character in relation to the heroine's journey, but for now I figured I'd just compare the two and talk about why I like this comic series so much, and why I was so disappointed by the TV show to the point that I couldn't finish it.

#OwnVoices: what does it mean, what are the origins of the hashtag/concept, and why do people support it? Combining research and my own experience from inside the most "woke" sectors of publishing, I give an overview on this complex and confusing topic. Stay tuned for the next video, where I'll discuss the problems caused by #OwnVoices as well as important context about the publishing industry that puts everything into perspective.

Did you know that public libraries are just full of white supremacist ideas? Of course you didn't, because it's patently untrue. But because my mother is a public librarian, I often troll her by sending her articles like this one. Drawing on the knowledge I have from her stories and my own lifelong experience as both a library power user and library volunteer, I explain why this article (which is written by a true believer in the antiracist religion) is straight up nonsense.

Recently, Charisma Carpenter tweeted her complaints about Joss Whedon's unprofessional behavior, and she was supported by fellow Whedonverse stars. She framed it as a #MeToo / #TimesUp issue to give her complaints more weight, but she's simply describing a hostile work environment, which is a common experience across industries. I assert that waiting twenty years to speak up about unprofessional behavior does nothing to effect change and contrary to Charisma's claims, is not at all courageous. Listen to me rant about her lack of agency, victim mentality, and attention seeking.

I give my perspective as a former publishing industry insider on a story that hits close to home for me -- a woman being fired from a literary agency for having profiles on Gab and Parler (where she posted the same content as on Twitter). This was exactly what I feared would happen to me when I still worked in publishing but was going on my intellectual journey away from feminism and the left. The publishing industry is not a place that encourages free thinking or diversity of opinion. In the children's / YA and sci-fi / fantasy spaces, the atmosphere is downright chilling. They are hunting wrongthinkers. If this is news to you, let this be your introduction.

Trump Derangement Syndrome in the publishing industry is alive and well, even though he's out of office! Almost 600 people signed a letter stating that no member of the Trump administration should be allowed a book deal because they should not profit from their "crimes." Breath of the Wild's Zelda may be a good character, but her story arc is nothing new; in fact, it's one of the oldest archetypal stories. And yet, a woman who has a strong background in video games and pop culture and multiple literature degrees describes it as breaking the mold and credits it with helping her accept her bisexuality. I point out her general lack of knowledge of the Zelda franchise, the history of stories, and generally vent my frustration with these kinds of "articles" in general.
