The time has come to once again look back at a game which made such a massive impact on pc gaming that it changed how games were made. This time we're looking at a game which completely changed how adventure games were made. Maniac Mansion from Lucas Arts completely changed how point and click adventures were made. The interface and writing on the game were totally innovative and the work done on the games engine allowed Lucasarts to dominate the adventure game market

As we round into a new decade, PC gaming goes from strength to strength. The PC game landscape sees the introduction of the big budget release and the birth of a company that would go on to change the whole video gaming landscape. Inbetween that we have a titan of a point and click adventure showing how story and characters were just as important to a good game as graphics and gameplay.

Oh boy oh boy. Truly we are entering a golden age of PC gaming. Some incredible games came out in 1989 and the years following. Gaming titans like Will Wright and Peter Molyneux released their first commercially successful games and we started to see techniques that were mostly used in the film industry start to be used in pc games.

Time continues to roll on and pc gameing is making strides towards a golden era. We start to see games are having more modern trappings like 3d rendering engines and physics modelling. We also had the start of a game, the legacy of which continues to this day.

1985 was a bit of a barren year for pc gaming. PC Gaming no longer ruled the roost with competition coming from the rise of the NES and Arcades. However there were some good releases in this year of retro pc gaming.

the bards tale - rpg set to rival ultima

In 1987 we had a major new hardware release (the Amiga 500) and a new distribution methodology (apogees shareware model). We also had a grandaddy of all point and click adventures (maniac mansion) and the game that spurred Sid Meiers to continue to make player driven open worlds (Pirates)

In the inagural episode of 'Games that Changed The Game' we go back to where it all began. 1962 and the birth of SPACEWAR! This game was the birth of modern video games, no matter what the hardware was it was played on. As such there is no where else to start in our series of important games than here.

In this video i go over the history of the game, how it came to be developed and how it was recieved. I also rope in my mate Ali to help me play the game to see what its like to play now.

1986 was a bit of a bounceback year for pc gaming. Pc gaming began to spread its influence and many good games came out. Although alan sugar had set his sights on one of British computings stalwarts.

A lot of important PC games came out before 1983, so after my arbitrary cut off point of 1983 to start the history of pc gaming, i need a video that will take a look at the major releases that occurred before 1983. Here it is then, the first proper video of the series which will look at games from 1962 to 1982. 20 years of pre history

The introduction to a new video series exploring the history of PC gaming. In this video we'll set out how the series is going to work. We'll explorer when PC gaming history started, what exactly is a PC and how the series is going to run.
