This is part three of Lesson 2 in the Thermal Mermaid Soap Making Course. In this episode we'll cover 3 things: terms like soda ash and glyceriv rivers. Since Titanium Dioxide (white colorant) is one of the big culprits in glycerine rivers, you're most likely to struggle with the balance of getting bright white soap and avoiding the crackle that TD causes, so I'll give you my recipe for a nice hard bar of white soap that doesn't go over board with the TD.

Hi, guys. I didn't expect to film this for a video, but we decided to join a weekend market on a last minute notice. We litterally cobbled a table together just a few hours before we discovered this great location, and thought I would do a comparison to my market experiences in the North from this sunny weekend spot in South Alabama. Hopefully, any of you sellers out there will find a few helpful tips. Feel free to post any questions in the comments on selling soap at craft fairs or how to market soap products.

Here is lesson 2.5 in the soap making video course at Thermal Mermaid

In this video we'll cover some basic details with common additives in cold process soap making for beginners.
1. Adding clay - and comparing it to the texture of your base soap as well as how clay can affect the same mica colorants.
2. Health warnings about dried aloe powder. Yes, be careful!
3. A demonstration on titanium dioxide. 1st I'll add the titanium dioxide the right way, and then I'll show you what happens if you just throw too much of the powder in and what the finished result looks like. It's only a cosmetic difference, but here you'll get to see what that looks like.

This is one video in the cold process chapter of the Thermal Mermaid artisan soap making course.

Baby Bastille Goat's Milk & Chamomile Soap

A Bastille soap is simple and known to be made with gentile oils. Made with 70% olive and and other combination of your choice, this recipe s made with 70% olive oil and a traditional 30% coconut oil. It feature's the rich creamy goat's milk and has just a light hint of chamomile flowers making the soap smell like soothing sleepy time tea.

If you want to know how to make the best Bastille soap at home with the full recipe, look no further. This recipe makes 3 lbs. of soap that can be cut into 11 pieces at 4.5 oz. after cure time.

What you need:

1.24 oz. Distilled Water
6.83 oz. Lye (NaOH)
33.60 oz. Olive Oil
14.40 oz. Coconut Oil
1 cup of dried Chamomile Flowers
2 scoops of powdered Goat's Milk

Instructions & Notes:

Step 1: Place the oils in the crock pot on high.

Step 2: With safety glasses and gloves, slowly pour the lye crystals into the the cold distilled water. Mix until the crystals are completely dissolved.

Step 3: When the lye water solution and oils are within 20 degrees apart, slowly mix them together with a stick blender. Mix until completely emulsified. Cover the soap and allow this to cook for about 20 – 30 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on the crock pot to make sure it doesn't expand and spill over the top.

Step 4: Check the soap and mix any oils and water that may have separated back together. Allow this to cook into the second stage. This will change from a pudding texture to a loose apple sauce texture. Add 1 cup of chamomile flowers into the soap and mix well.

Step 5: Slow cook the flowers into the next stage of soap, mixing frequently. Cook until the soap becomes gelled and takes on a gelled Vaseline look all the way through the pot.

Step 6: Remove the heat and cover, and allow the soap to begin cooling. Mix two scoops of goat's milk powder into three ounces of water. Blend the powder into a smooth cream, and pour it over the top of the soap once the soap has cooled to below 150 de..

Bamboo & Grapefruit Goat's Milk Soap

This is a base recipe of soft plant oils with an invigorating fragrance and the moisturizing qualities of shea, cocoa, and goat's milk.

Instructions & Notes:

Step 1: Place the Coconut, Palm, Rice Bran, and Olive oil in a crock pot on high.

Step 2: Carefully, with your safety glasses, gloves, and mask pour the lye crystals into the cold water and stir until the crystals are completely dissolved.

Step 3: When the oils in the crock pot and the lye water solution are within 20 degrees from each other, slowly pour the lye water solution into the crock pot and mix with a stick blender until it is completely emulsified. Cover the crock pot and allow this to cook for 20 minutes.

Step 4: After twenty minutes uncover the soap and remix any separation. Fold the edges into the center and pull the bottom to the top. Add the cocoa butter, and shea butter into the mixture and allow this to melt. Cover and cook for another 20 minutes.

Step 5: Allow the soap to cook through from the first stage that looks like a thick pudding, through the second stage, which looks like a loose apple sauce, and into the third stage. During the third stage the soap will become gelled, and you will see that the texture is glassy like jelly or Vaseline. Make sure the soap is gelling through the entire pot by mixing this well and pulling the bottom up to the top. Remove the heat and leave the cover off the pot. While the soap is cooking add 1 cup of dried yellow flowers into the pot and allow this to slow cook and break down into the soap.

Step 6: While you are waiting for the soap to cool, blend the powdered goat's milk into 3 ounces of water. Whip the powder until it is completely smooth. Once the soap has cooled below 150 degrees pour the milk over the top and mix until it is completely incorporated in to the soap. Add the fragrance oil, and mix well.

Step7: Transfer the soap into a 3 lb. mold by the spoonful in alternating layers. Top the loaf ..
