In Episode 222 of Idea Diary - Today, I ramble about a HUGE A-Ha moment that I got from watching a Sunny Lenarduzzi video. I’ve always know that something sucks about Facebook, IG, Twitter, Linkedin, but Youtube is so awesome and valuable, and now I realize why. Youtube is EVERGREEN, which is content that is most likely to be valuable for a longer period of time; possibly forever. Plus, social media platforms like Youtube, Pinterest, Personal Blogs are more valuable for your brand, because people are searching for a certain topic, and then discovering YOU. No one is really on Facebook, Linkedin, or Instagram to find answers to questions. Those are more NOW platforms. No one really goes to old tweets to see what you tweeted about yesterday. They usually just follow, and keep up with the future posts. Divide you social platforms in your mind from EVERGREEN long-lasting content with SHORT-LIVED Today only content that really only works if you have a current audience. This is not to say that you can’t grow an audience on a short-lived social media platform, but it’s an up-hill battle. You’ve got to be super involved with all the trends, and possibly make it a full-time effort until you reach success. (I know there are a ton of people that may say it doesn’t take a bunch of time, but I would consider research and getting good at a platform like Instagram Fame takes tons of research to be a real expert. This is an exciting revelation for me.

I don’t know about you, but I am focusing solely on EVERGREEN Social. (Note: I would consider TikTok the best of both worlds, because the algorithm currently will feed old content to new followers.)

In Episode 218 of Idea Diary - Today, I ramble about Al Ries’ book, “The Future of Your Company Depends on It ” from 2000!

My Notes From the Book:
* Line Extensions can kill a brand, For Example when A1 Steak Sauce decided to invest 18 million into making an A1 Chicken Sauce, which obviously no one has ever heard of.
* Just buying and selling line extensions is not a business.
* Small towns have "general stores," large cities have tons of specialty stores. I think the internet creates millions of micro store opportunities.
* Specialization makes countries and companies rich. Also, it can make people rich.
* Technology and products do not converge to survive, and diverge. (However, I think over time technology is converging. Smartphones are now television, radio and telephone combined. I think when this book was written, Al was correct about this thought. However, the speed of technology at this point in 2022, I would like to ask his opinion on this point.
* TOYS R US was successful at the time this book was written, and was the category leader in toy stores. Amazon didn't kill TOYS R US, like we all assume. The investors of the company loaded the company with debt, and drove it into bankruptcy. Also, a cold warehouse style of shopping for toys drove the brand down in its category.
* Managers hired need to be specialized in their field. Remember "Bottom's Up Marketing" Senior Management/Executives, usually can't relate to customers, and Mid-level Management want to diversify strategies to make sure they don't fail, and lose their jobs. Which totally loses the branding and marketing focus. These two groups usually think that growth can do no wrong, but this is false.
* When starting your brand. Select your category. Decide if you want to be better, or different. Better is usually only an option for the #1 Spot in any category, and doesn't actually need to be the better product. Leaders own their category, and own a word in the mind of the consumer. To win a spot on the ladder, you need to be different.
* Defend your leadership by launching a second brand.
* The Market is created by new products and ideas.
* Business needs competition. If you are first and have no competitors, then you can experiment with line extension, but once you have competition you have to defend your spot on the ladder.
* What single product is your best hope for the future? 80/20 Rule. Out of 100% of your efforts, only 20% of your time working is what moves you forward.
* Centralized companies are more focused, and more successful.
* Focus takes time
* Focus is simple
* Focus is immediately understandable
* Focus is not a strategy
* Focus is not forever.

In Episode 216 of Idea Diary - Today, I ramble about Al Ries and Jack Trout’s book, “Positioning” from 1981!
Chapter 1: What Positioning Is All About
Positioning is not about creating something new, it's about manipulating what the people already think, It's about bridging your product's communication design and reputation with what already exists. Keep The Message Simple! Don't try to change someone's mind. It's impossible to change. FOCUS your brand. Be honest. Own a word in the mind of the consumer, and have a visual hammer! Look for your branding positioning solution in the customer's mind. Position is to accept perceptions, then restructure those perceptions to create this position you desire.
Chapter 2: The Assault on the Mind -Messages get lost in the number of media platforms we have in 1981, Just think about how much easier it is to get lost in the era of the internet and social media.
Chapter 3: Getting into the Mind -Communication can only happen in the right place at the right time. Be the first or think of a new category to be #1 Spot on the ladder. Don't name your brand something generic.
Chapter 4: Those Little Ladders in Your Head -The mind has no room for new stuff, unless it is related to something old and familiar. #1 Spot is first. Be proud to be #2 Spot. Own a word in the mind of the consumer, and have a unique position on the ladder of your category. Like BMW chose to focus on being the best car to drive within the import car category, and won the #1 Spot with that focus.
Chapter 5: You Can’t Get There from Here -Don't Fight Facts! Sometimes it's going to happen from the point you are at. Start over, or forget it.
Chapter 6: Positioning of a Leader -Leaders should not try to drive competitors out of business. Create a new category if you can to be number one, or be happy being #2. Only 2 brands will dominate a category. Strategy and tactics will define and differentiate your business, and Press will make your business exist.
Chapter 7: Positioning of a Follower - Copycat products fail to achieve reasonable sales goals. Being "better" than your competitor doesn't work. Look for blindspots of competitors, and create and market your brand based on that. Focus, and do not try to appeal to everyone. For example, Southwest Airlines decided to focus on being affordable over focusing on being a fancy airline, and they consistently had profits once they did that.
Chapter 8: Repositioning the Competition - To create a new idea or product, you must move old ideas out. Being "better" than your competitor is not effective advertising. When creating something new, compare it to something old. Like Sugar-Free products mentions "sugar," but the product has no sugar. The first car was called "horseless carriage" which was a reference to what a car was before there was a car.

Tactics dictate the most effective strategy for a company - not the other way around.
A tactic is an idea, a combative mental angel that differentiates your product from all others in your category.
Marketing is the strategy of a business
A company organizes all marketing activities in an effort to maximize sales
A strategy is the big picture (where the company wants to go) while a tactic is the details (what to do to get there)

1. Start with customer
2. Narrow down your tactic
3. breakdown how to implement strategy with middle management
4. Sell the strategy to the top executives

Senior management of a company are generally the most isolated from the real world of the consumer
Middle managers are tempted to not focus on one tactic and try all kinds of tactics which can water down the entire strategy
It’s a mistake trying to get the customer to fit into your Strategy
Planning process should leave room to pivot and drop things that aren’t working.

Example of top-down marketing failures:
GM trying to make computers
Xerox trying to make computers
Car makers trying to make cars that customers don’t really want.
