Defence in Depth - Verteidigung in der Tiefe
Barton concentrates on the second phase of the battle, from the middle of July to the middle of September 1916. Barton reveals how an Allied advance on objectives which should have lasted days and weeks took months and resulted in yet more carnage on the Somme battlefield. Whilst British tactics were unvarying, that of their German enemy evolved using the changing landscape of the battlefield. The slowness of the Allied advance during this period Barton explains by the emergence of new German tactics - defence in depth.

First Day - Erster Tag

Barton explores the events leading up to and on the notoriously bloody first day of the offensive. Walking the battlefield, he explains the failures that led to over 20,000 British deaths. Barton argues that to get a better understanding of events, you should not only confront what the British did badly but what their enemy did better. The Germans were able to skilfully use the landscape of the Somme to maximise casualties amongst their enemy. And based on research in German archives, Barton shows just how much they knew in advance about Allied plans through captured documents and interrogations of captured British prisoners and deserters who were persistently 'spilling the beans'.

Engineers are the unsung heroes of the battlefield, often finding themselves fighting in tractors rather than tanks, and having to blow-up their way through what others go round. Engineer Donald Campbell tells how he drove his digger into the middle of a raging fire-fight, allowing troops to move on and out thanks to the bridge he had constructed.

Home made bombs - called improvised explosive devices or IEDs by the military - are a constant threat, liable to maim anybody unfortunate enough to come across them. Pete Norton tells how, knowing full well the risks he was taking, took the long walk to an IED in Baghdad which then exploded injuring him badly. Plus amazing footage of a US marine being blown up by an IED.

It is a fact of war that soldiers get injured and killed, but their comrades display amazing courage and take immense risks to save lives on the field. Men like Lieutenant Simon Cupples of the Mercian Regiment, who put himself at risk no fewer than five times to save his injured mates. Plus the US Marines who faced incoming fire on the rooftop in Fallujah trying to save their dying friend.

In this episode, what it's like to come under surprise attack, and how troops combat such tactics. The men of 3 Para tell how they had to fight their way out of a massive Taliban ambush. And in Iraq, a medal-winning United States Marine tells how he ran straight into insurgent machine gun fire to save his men.

In the streets of Iraq, battles are raging where soldiers have to fight the enemy at very close range, sometimes only a few metres. Soldiers from 1 Royal Horse Artillery tell how nine men, heavily outnumbered, were left trapped inside a house shooting insurgents who were beating at the doors. Plus the story of David Bellavia, an American infantryman who killed insurgents with his bare hands in Fallujah.

Former SAS soldier Andy McNab fronts this hard-hitting series, uncovering the real truth and stories behind British and American soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. In this episode, the amazing story of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment who spent four months under constant barrage of mortars, machine guns and small arms in Al Amarah, south of Baghdad. The soldiers themselves tell how they lived under the strain. Plus the US marine sniper who came under siege, not only from the enemy forces but also from his fellow marines while perched on top of an oil tank in Iraq.

Ep 3/3. In the last century of their rule four Plantagenet kings are violently deposed and murdered by members of their own family. It is the bloodiest episode in the entire history of the English monarchy. As the Plantagenets turn in on themselves England is dragged into decades of brutal civil war.

Episode 2/3. England's longest-reigning royal dynasty fights to expand their power across the British Isles, and win back their lands in France. In this golden age of chivalry, a clear sense of English nationhood emerges and parliament is born.

Ep 1/3. Henry II forges a mighty empire encompassing England and much of France. His sons, Richard the Lionheart and John, then turn on their father and each other, bringing the dynasty to the edge of annihilation.

Ep 1/3. In the first episode of an exciting three-part series, Professor Robert Bartlett explores how the Normans developed from a band of marauding Vikings into the formidable warriors who conquered England in 1066. He tells how the Normans established their new province of Normandy -'land of the northmen' - in northern France. They went on to build some of the finest churches in Europe and turned into an unstoppable force of Christian knights and warriors, whose legacy is all around us to this day. Under the leadership of Duke William, the Normans expanded into the neighbouring provinces of northern France. But William's greatest achievement was the conquest of England in 1066. The Battle of Hastings marked the end of the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy and monarchy. The culture and politics of England would now be transformed by the Normans.

Im, slowly going to rebuild the library but it will take months.

Nostalgic Documentaries and films. I have a passion for old and lost media mainly old History channel stuff from the 90s and early 2000's that you can't find anywhere. These shows were the pinnacle of the History channel. Most of these shows are unavailable on DVD and are not viewable on any streaming service.

Im also seeking to upload some old and lost Movies that are personally dear to me and are again hard or impossible to find anywhere. I seek no reward or monetization from this. On that note its only a matter of time before before this is all gone so enjoy it while you can. Feel free to download this videos for your own collections before they no doubt get removed.

Please feel free to subscribe, comment, discuss and enjoy my content. I am 100% non profit.
