@KatyTurNBC speaks with @MichaelEMann and @LtGrusselHonore about this week's extreme weather events, climate change, and the consequences of science denial—all on the eve of the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
December 10, 1985 - A group of senators and scientists today called for national and international action to avert a predicted warming of the earth's climate resulting from a buildup of carbon dioxide and other man-made gases in the atmosphere.

At the end of the last ice age, geological fingerprints recorded in ocean sediments suggests glacier retreat of 50 meters a day, 18 km a year. For comparison the fastest retreating glaciers in Antarctica today are the Pope, and the Smith glacier system, retreating about 2.9 km a year. http://climatestate.com/2020/08/03/geological-fingerprint-suggest-rapid-glacier-retreat/
Significant changes have taken place on Denman Glacier and Shackleton Ice Shelf. The floating section of the glacier experiences vigorous ice melt in contact with the ocean, which suggests the presence of Circumpolar Deep Water. However, there is no historical oceanographic data near the glacier. http://climatestate.com/2020/08/01/the-denman-glacier-and-shackleton-ice-shelf/
A new study suggests that the East Antarctica Ice Sheet in the Wilkes Basin may have completely disappeared around 400,000 years ago. Currently the Wilkes Basin is only hold back by the Cook, Mertz, and the Ninnis glacier - the Cook Glacier shelf has already collapsed. There is also the Totten Glacier farther to the east, part of the Aurora Basin, also prone to warmer water at the grounding line, though the topography is not favorable for rapid retreat in this case. Nevertheless, observations remain scarce, and the Wilkes Basin ice sheet may be the real elephant in the room. http://climatestate.com/2020/07/27/the-east-antarctic-doomsday-glaciers-|-earth-under-water/

Miami, New Orleans and New York City completely under water it's a very real possibility if sea levels continue to rise. In Earth Under Water we'll see these events unfold as leading experts forecast how mankind will be impacted if global warming continues. They'll break down the science behind these predictions and explore ways humanity could adapt, including engineering vast dams near San Francisco, or building floating cities outside of New York. http://climatestate.com/2013/08/09/earth-under-water-worldwide-flooding-global-warming-national-geographic-documentary

Some scientists believe that in order to safeguard humanity's future, we need to leave Earth and colonize another planet. How we could build a Mars base today. Do we have to consider a Mars or Moon base, and could we do it in time?

If you followed CLIMATE STATE over the years you may be aware that we posted some related content to space colonization before. It seems perverted to explore space colonization only for means to secure our, and other species, yet this is the next logical step to advance our civilization, and maybe we will learn something important along the way.
Space exploration, people living in a colony, their stories and ideas, may also make our society more aware to the fragility of Earth.
