I felt a little bad that I've posted three separate arranges of Snowman since 2015, so I decided to change it up this year by doing a cover of Winters White from Earthbound as well, just so it wouldn't get left out. Since the DPCM channel was occupied by the sleigh bell samples from Earthbound and the triangle channel was being used as the bass (so as to avoid relying on the Saw channel for that purpose), I used the first 2a03 channel to act as a backup percussion this time around.

The holiday season is finally upon us, and as such the next few videos are mostly gonna be winter or ice themed. I figured I'd start off with one of the snow themes from Super Mario Maker 2, and while I mostly went with SMB3's Snow Theme because I'd already made a level in that style, I actually kinda prefer this out of the new Snow themes. I dunno, I think it just has the right flair of holiday cheer. As with before, if you want to try playing through the level in this video, the ID is CT7-5LW-T3G.

This is another request from gembound prism, and I decided to focus on using 2a03 this time around and see if I couldn't make a relatively full track work within three melodic channels. It was a little tricky because of the brass chords, but hopefully it turned out alright. One of the challenges this cover had was that some of the piano backing felt too quiet for me to accurately pinpoint, especially near the end of the loop, and none of the sheet music I came across incorporated that. As such, if there's a couple of inconsistencies with the backing I do apologize.

Let me tell you the grand tale of Riolu and Chimchar from Team Fire.
⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅs
http://riolu.link/rezawrces/music
Very creative team name, I know. Back then, I couldn’t think of a better name and wanted to continue playing. PMD2 Sky is one of my most favourite games and so is the soundtrack. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to experience this wonderful game as a child and to this day I get very emotional when I listen to the soundtrack or even see scenes of the game. That’s quite useful actually, whenever I have something in my eye I can just listen to some especially emotional or sad songs and it will be removed in no time.
The game has so many great songs that I couldn’t decide which one to cover first, so I just took the first song to begin the PMD 2 covers and to get some more practice before I do the best songs. At first, I finished the cover only using the 2A03 channels. I put up that initial version for download as well. However, I didn’t like the sound of the noise-only base drums at all but the triangle channel was entirely used up by the bass and juggling base and drums in the same loud triangle channel doesn’t sound good either. I also had the idea to use additional channels to attempt to create an echo, so I added the VRC6 channels, moved the base to the sawtooth channel, added triangle sounds to the base drums and had two more pulse channels to use for the echo or other things. I wasn’t sure if using the sawtooth channel as base is a good idea though as it doesn’t sound as good and the loud triangle base is certainly a very distinct feature of 2A03 music. Because I used an odd number of lines per beat, I had to add Gxx in every single line of the first echo channel to make it start half a beat later. Using more than 1 effect column with 7 channels however wouldn’t fit my video layout and I didn’t want to half the resolution just for a couple of pixels, so I edited the second effect column of VRC6’s Pulse 1 channel out. Just pretend the echo notes in that channel all have G04 behind them.
A year ago, I tried to draw a BotW landscape to use as my outro. It was supposed to have signs next to a pathwaytrailroutetrack with previous videos and everything. Unfortunately though, my pixel art abilities were not nearly good enough and after a couple of days, I gave up because it looked horrible. Then I had the idea of the stage that the video is being showed on and the standing signs turned into hanging signs. Now, with a lot more pixel art experience, I attempted to draw a landscape again and to my surprise it looked great. I’m always afraid to draw at higher resolutions because then one can see my non-existing drawing abilities in greater detail. I proceeded to draw Wigglytuff and it looked great, so did Riolu and Chimchar. I couldn’t believe that something I drew looked that great. I guess I did indeed improve and I shouldn’t be scared. Saying this feels very familiar.
Then I drew Chatot though and it looked horrible. At first, I thought that was because I had reference poses of the other 3 Pokémon in SFM and apparently I could only draw something that looks good with a perfectly posed reference. Next was Grovyle and it looked just as good as the first 3 but there was no Grovyle model for SFM as well, so I guess it wasn’t the missing reference. Apparently, birds are just as impossible to draw as hands. I considered removing Chatot because it’s ruining this otherwise beautiful piece (I call it "Cover Cover"), but Chatot just fits perfectly in Shaymins spot being looked at by Wigglytuff and I can’t have Wigglytuff without Chatot. In the end, I gave up on improving Chatot and the ugliness is kind of needed, it would look too good for a drawing by me otherwise.
Using the NES colour palette was once again fun and looks great, it just doesn’t have enough colours to nicely shade things. I considered using dithering but sometimes the only fitting colour is the same as the outline and I also don’t know if dithering would look good with my coloured lines in general. Maybe I should just try it some time. This time though, I settled for no shading since I also like flat unshaded styles.
I have no idea why I finished the fideo this late. It only took 60 hours to make, this would finally have given me some time before the next fideo to start working on my website and to finish the channel revolution. Apparently, the once again unusually large amount of RL stuff that happened during the last two weeks consumed the remaining time I had. Some big, positive and greatly needed things have happened recently though, so that’s good. There will be 2 more 8-bit covers before the obligatory annual Christmas fideo. I hope that I will be able to finish them quickly and finally have time for said things without having to stop regular uploads again. Until then, have a wonderful day and if you actually read all of this, have a delicious Toast Hyrule :)

The Night 𝙃𝙚 Came to Termina!
⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅs

At the beginning of the year, I had the idea to make an 8-bit version of this song and I was really excited to recreate the high ticking noise and everything else. But I put it on my fideo list to make it for Halloween, hoping that by then I would have a lot of FamiTracker experience and would be able to do the song justice.
Now I’d say I’ve just had enough experience to make it good enough. The base drum actually sounds like one unlike the terrible attempt I made in the GoT theme. Apparently 3 Triangle wave ticks are enough. During the creation process and when I was done I actually liked and was satisfied with how it sounded. In fact, I liked it so much that I listened to it for hours while drawing the pixel art. Maybe that’s why I’m not sure if it’s good anymore now as I usually don’t like a song anymore when I’ve listened to it too many times consecutively. I just couldn’t resist because I was so surprised that I actually for the first time made an 8-bit cover that I liked. Now however, I think it just sounds good because the song is so simple that it’s impossible to make a bad sounding cover. The only thing I’m still satisfied with is the percussion.
I’ve actually not watched the film before, I just knew the great music from Dead by Daylight but to get something for the visuals of the fideo, I watched it. I expected a scene of Laurie looking ouf of a window and seeing Michael Myers outside in the dark that I could recreate in a top-down video game style but I only found one potential scene: Michael Myers standing menacingly on top of the stairs, only his silhouette being visible in the dark and Laurie or rather the camera looking up to him. While I could barely see anything during that actual scene, in my head I had all kinds of ideas how a scene like this could look amazing. Myers, or as a Zelda reference the Skull Kid with Majora’s Mask and Myers’s’s knife, could be standing up there, his dark silhouette in front of a window that gives a bit of light to the top floor and lets us see the beautiful stars, but also Majora’s Mask’s eerie moon, the main focus lying on the mask’s glowing eyes. Of course, the Skull Kid has to be accompanied by Tael.
Unfortunately, the end result doesn’t even come close to the incredible scene I had envisioned in my mind. I had to redraw the interior of the house many many times, especially the stairs and railings to get the perspective right. There were also other things I wanted to add like maybe a generator or some other DbD reference and a pumpkin glowing in the bottom left corner behind the railing similar to the film poster I animated but I ran out of time. I really need a lot more pixel art experience, the visuals for these fideos take way too long to make and are not at all to my standards.
Regarding the integration of the film into my mind, I was disappointed by it. Amarizo watched it last year on Halloween and already told me that it was boring and apparently he was right. To me it just consisted of meaningless and boring scenes. Occasionally, Michael Myers shows up to do nothing or when he actually does something, he just kills people in unspectacular ways who to me were just actors pretending to be killed and not actually dying characters with interesting personalities that I learn about and get close to during the story. Another big part of the non-existing story that bothers me is the fact that Michael’s motive and backstory is just: He is evil. That’s it. He has been evil from birth for no reason and will forever be evil. In my opinion, this is just boring and unimaginative and really shows that the entire film has no content at all, just a couple of scary scenes that were not really scary. The only good thing about it is the music. And I guess a couple of nice sounding quotes by Michael’s psychiatrist. Maybe it’s a good thing though that it wasn’t more scary or brutal, I actually don’t like horror or violence at all. Instead of nightmares, I got some alright iconic scenes, great music and great quotes. I love quotes. Quote me on that.

I briefly started working on this 5 months ago and I wanted to get it done before season 8 ends. But of course things went differently.
This is my first attempt at percussion in FamiTracker. I used both the triangle and noise channel with volume slides, pitch slides and arpeggio envelopes. At first I thought the triangle drums sounded a bit weird but when there are other sounds playing at the same time it sounds alright.
There are multiple reasons why it took 4 weeks to get this fideo done. Some were out of my control like real life stuff and the troubles I had trying to make the animation. Clip Studio Paint is amazing and can do a lot of the things I always dreamt of but quite a few of them don’t always work, at least the way I need them. For a pixel art animation I of course needed nearest neighbour interpolation which is amazingly possible in a canvas setting. Unfortunately, this applies only to moving raster images, not to file objects inside an animation folder (but outside of animation folders it does?!) and not to camera movements. I love file objects, the ability to add a seperate file as layer is amazing and what I always wanted and so I use them whenever possible in animations. It took a long time to figure all these strange things out and to make it work the way I wanted it to. Adding every single one of the many 60 fps-frames that I animated and exported in Aseprite to their respective frames in Clip Studio Paint was annoying and time consuming as well. Actually, at first I wanted to animate the camera movements in Video deluxe since it has good position keyframing but of course no way to change the scaling interpolation. After the finished animation was exported in Clip Studio Paint, I had to resize every one of the 5900 frames to 3840p in Aseprite. I tried it multiple times but every time Aseprite (and other programmes) crashed because it ran out of memory. So I had to import the images into multiple Aseprite files and export them separately. The resizing alone took 4 hours. But I’m still incredibly glad that I can now use Aseprite to do this.
The biggest reason in my control were my usual self-doubts. A lot of the time I wasn’t motivated to continue because I thought the song and the animation will be terrible. Some times I actually liked my progress and had fun but in the next moment I changed my mind again. I’m not sure if this is good or good enough but I tried to convince myself that it might be terrible now but I need to continue if I want to improve. Just like my Developer Updates and Jeff Sings improved. Though it seems like people only watch my old and bad fideos. First the old DbD bug fideos and now Introducing Link was suddenly watched by six thousand people. I should be honoured that people actually watch it but it’s just really terrible quality-wise and content-wise and unfortunately these people don’t seem to take a look at or are interested in my better fideos.

I don't remember if I mentioned this in prior videos, but I'll say it again just in case: I LOVE Okina's first boss fight! I think it's one of my favorite final bosses in the entire series from a conceptial standpoint. Her fight takes place across all of the stages that you've been through up to that point, covering every single season in the progress, which is always a nice touch. Then the final spell comes along, and she just takes this game's gimmick and uses it against *you*. I absolutely LOVE when games do this, and it's mostly done well here, especially when you've probably been relying on it for most of your run (assuming this isn't just a challenge run where you don't use it at all). If she didn't also set your power to zero as well, I would have no issues with this boss fight! Her theme is also really good; not quite Pure Furies good, but good enough for it to get stuck in my head long enough for me to want to cover it.

This is the first actual song cover I’ve created using FamiTracker and I’m surprisingly pretty happy with how it turned out. For the main voice I used the triangle channel because it sounds kind of like a flute at high octaves, the downside is that it doesn’t allow many modifications or decorations except for vibrati which is why I considered using the FDS expansion with a triangle wave at first. In order to simulate the sound of the supporting voice, I used a volume envelope that starts loud, becomes quieter quickly and then slowly fades along with a bit of a tremolo. This creates an interesting sound with an initial attack that lingers a bit afterwards, just like in the original. Both pulse channels play the supporting voice alternately to make the most out of the lingering sounds and to prevent the overlapping lingering of the last two notes from causing a dissonance I added a faster fade as release in the volume envelope that is used on the second to last note of longer notes. (I wrote this paragraph a year ago when I made the song)
In regard of the integration of the drawings into the fideo, this was my first time drawing hair. For the first time it turned out acceptably I think, partly thanks to Amarizo’s helpful suggestions.

[8-Bit] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Ilia’s Theme
⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅs
Song: http://riolu.link/rezawrces/music
Game: http://riolu.link/tlok (playable in web browsers or as download)
It all started a year ago in New Jersey, I mean in Ordon, when I wanted to make an 8-bit version of Ilia’s Theme to use in my outro and while I’m at it a high quality version of the Overworld Theme to use in my intro. I started by recreating the already 8-bit Overworld Theme to learn how to use FamiTracker and to learn about 8-bit music in general. After I made Ilia’s Theme as well, I realised I really enjoyed making 8-bit music and that I should start making 8-bit covers of songs I love. In fideo form there had to be some sort of visuals as well, so I came up with the idea of making short pixel animations fitting to the songs along with the pattern and oscilloscopes from FamiTracker for those interested. Originally I didn’t want to upload the Overworld Theme as it’s almost the same as the original, but I liked the idea of making an animation of Link-Riolu in a first-Zelda-style environment killing an enemy with a sword. Link-Riolu was supposed to kill an enemy, then move a room to the right where the animation would loop and the same room with the enemy would appear again. But then I thought, why not make a couple of different rooms? Or why not a whole area? Or why not a whole game with a big map, interesting characters and an interesting story?
So I started drawing terrain textures which I have never done before. The rock walls were especially difficult. I tried many different versions and colours but I just couldn’t get something that actually looks like a rock wall. The current version was the best but then the next big obstacle appeared: Making many versions of this texture for all possible angles that all perfectly fit together in any combination. This was very tiring to do and I was very glad when I was done. The water animations turned out surprisingly well I think, considering I’ve never drawn or animated water before. Then I drew the walking animation for Link-Riolu and it was again a new challenge to draw a character in very few pixels. I couldn’t get something even close to acceptable at first, so I took a look at older Pokémon sprites for reference and proceeded to make the body very wide with barely any legs. It was good enough for my first attempt, so next I spent a lot of time creating the map, outlining the story and thinking of interesting characters. I’ve always wanted to write stories and create characters and I enjoyed doing so a lot. This was also the birth of Zelda-Kirlia. Unfortunately, you won’t be seeing the story or characters yet as I will stop working on the game to make other things for now.
When it came to implementing the ideas into the game, I had to spend days to get the transition between maps right. In TLoZ, enemies are not visible during the transition, so I created the entire map in one game map and then created lots of screen sized maps that each have a part of the whole map in them. When transitioning, first the player would be teleported from the screen sized map they are currently on to the relative position on the big map, making all enemies disappear. Then the player would be moved by one tile to the next part of the map, triggering the Map Scroll script. After the camera is centered on the next part of the map, the player would be teleported to the relative position on the respective screen sized map, making the enemies of that map part appear and completing the transition. However, there were multiple problems.
Firstly, the Map Scroll script starts the camera transition when the bottom right of the player’s sprite leaves the screen. This results in an instant start of the camera movement on bottom and right transitions, but on very delayed movements on top and left transitions. So I came up with the solution of making the player invisible as soon as the top and left transitions start and moving them at maximum speed to the next tile, activating the camera movement as soon as possible. To create the illusion of the player moving regularly, a copy of Link-Riolu’s sprite appears and moves 1 tile up or left at regular speed.
Secondly, there are no native ways (at least to my knowledge) in RPG Maker MV of triggering player teleports upon attempting to leave the map at the edge of the screen. Usually, teleports are triggered upon touching the tile on the edge of the screen. However, I wanted the player to be able to stand on the tiles on the edge of the screen without triggering the transition, instead triggering it only when leaving that tile in the direction of the next map. So I tried many different things for days until I found a looping check for button inputs that starts when touching the tile on the edge of the screen, ending the input check when pressing the movement key that leads back and triggering the transition steps upon pressing the movement key that leads out of the current screen. This worked nearly perfectly, exc

Was trying to think of something I wanted to do for one of Monday's timeslots, and Yearnings of the Wind got stuck in my head, so I went with that. Most of the work was done on the 4th, but the second half felt a little off regarding the bass so that ended up getting reworked just before rendering and uploading. It's a great song and I enjoyed arranging it, though I honestly prefer some of the songs that appear later in the game. Since I ended up using the stereo commands I've also added a mono version just in case you prefer that.

Ninja Gaiden is the kind of game where I keep wanting to 1cc it with the expectation that I can handle it despite having never beaten it before, and as a result I keep playing worse. I definitely will try to rectify that, but in any case this music is absolutely fantastic and I absolutely wanted to do a full cover of this song ever since doing the DIY cover a while ago. I made an effort to put the triangle in the lead for the majority of it, and while I think I went overboard on the arrangement this song was absolutely begging for it. I'm glad I worked on it, and I really hope you enjoyed it!

I was originally considering doing Monster Dance because it's really catchy. However, I realize I'd already done Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears earlier this year, so I ultimately went with Beginning as the last of this month's Castlevania tracks to round out the big three. It's clear just how much mileage the Konami sound team got out of DPCM drums, given how much I had to cut into the 3rd channel for toms just to compensate. Just like with Bloody Tears, I put this in the key of a bit so I could make the bass a bit lower. I still had a lot of fun working on this overall, though, and while I don't have any more Castlevania tracks planned for this month, I'll definitely plan some for next Halloween!

I wanted to do either this or the SMB3-style ghost house theme for Halloween this year, but ultimately I went with this because as far as I'm aware there's not a VRC6 cover of this song out there yet. There was an ulterior motive, however; I got Super Mario Maker 2 for my birthday, and the idea I had was to make a level, cover one of the songs that's present in that level, and use footage from that level as a sort of in-flight movie to go along with this cover. It's not completely new (I've done this a few times with other games in the past), but I figured I'd have a bit of fun with this week's video. If you want to check this level out for yourself, the ID is LSD-DYT-00G.

Lower Norfair's the kind of track I would have done eventually, so I decided to do a cover for October. However, it had also been a while since I did a cover with only the 'Blank' instrument. I'm not 100% sure that was the best option for this track, specifically, but it was definitely fun to try to work with that limitation. I also went with the DPCM vocals as I almost always associate Lower Norfair in particular with ominous choral sounds.

This was a request made by "alexis martinez la rosa jara", and my God, was it a doozy. Most of the track was fine to cover, but Ryusuke Fujioka was a BEAST when composing the song, especially when it came to piano and guitar shredding. It's one thing to try to attempt to port that to 8-bit without it sounding bad, but it's another to do it entirely by ear due to lack of references and sheet music online. As such, I apologize if I missed a few notes here or there. This is still a fantastic song, and I think it worked out really well in the Akumajou Densetsu style!
Speaking of which, at the time this gets posted song requests are open once again! However, I am going to be completing them on my own terms so as to maintain my own sanity, so I do apologize if I don't get to them right away.

Today is the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VI in North America (titled Final Fantasy III at the time), and is widely considered one of the greatest RPGs on a system already known for having so many good ones (mostly from Square, though it's not like Capcom, Namco and Enix hadn't gotten in on the fun). Given this, I decided to prepare a track in celebration well in advance, and since it happens to be October, I figured why not cover Dancing Mad, the final boss theme from FFVI and one of my favorite songs from the entire franchise? Of course, if I was gonna do that, I wanted to also try to add in DPCM vocals; thankfully I had more than enough room for it! I also tried adding elements from the Distant Worlds version, as well as add a couple extra touches near the end. I had a ton of fun working on this, and I really hope you enjoyed it!

I wanted to revisit this track ever since I did that combination cover of it and Upper Brinstar, but I just never found a good opportunity to. I figured since it's October, I might as well get around to it. Went with Sneventracker this time since I'd already done Vampire Killer using this program earlier. Unfortunately, Sneventracker has an issue where if you try to put in a note lower than A-1, it automatically defaults to A-1, so I either had to bear with the third square channel being higher pitched than I would like or transpose the song up a few notes so I could make it lower. I went with the latter, mostly because Bloody Tears has been in the key of D before.

It's October, which means Halloween is soon upon us! To get into the spirit of things, I'll theme these next several uploads around either spooky-sounding songs, final boss songs or Halloween-esque games, and while some of them are gonna be a stretch, I do want to make up for not celebrating Halloween on this channel since 2016. Of course I wanted to start with a Castlevania track, but I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do Lost Painting, Dance of Gold, or both. I ultimately went with Lost Painting since that song got stuck in my head (and I couldn't find a Akumajou Densetsu-style cover of it anywhere).
Also since the Lost Painting takes place in a different location than I thought, I figured I'd change the video layout up a bit. It'll be back to normal after this.

It's the last day before October, meaning this is the last chance I get to do something I want before I have to start posting Halloween-themed covers (even if I don't technically have to, I skipped out the last couple of years so I want to make up for it). Was drawing a blank as to what I wanted to post on Monday, had Cotton on the brain again so I just went with that. Decided to go with the Stage 2 theme, but that wasn't long enough so I threw in a cover of one of the cutscene theme. However, that also felt too short for one video and it would've felt weird to have only one of the cutscenes, so I also threw in the other cutscene theme. It's only now sinking in that I went a little overboard...
In other news, I've heard the Cotton Reboot development progress is going smoothly!

With the Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age coming out today, I figured I'd prepare something for the occasion, especially since I've been having a blast with the demo so far (though I still have not finished it yet, what with it being particularly lengthy compared to other demos I've played). I'd initially wanted to do the battle theme, but I think I lost motivation after seeing what else was on my to-do list. Then, when playing through the demo I wound up getting the Heliodor town theme stuck in my head, and decided to make an 8-bit version of that instead. Hopefully it turned out alright!

While this is a song from the Wii NSMB game, I am partially doing this (and uploading a day early) because of the 1 year anniversary of haniwa/ayyk92's art of what would be named Bowsette/Koopa-Hime, based on the Switch port of New Super Mario Bros. U (which this song also appears in). Even despite that, I had mostly been meaning to do this for a while now, as it's actually one of my favorite castle themes from the Mario series alongside the DS Castle theme. I honestly don't remember why I stalled in the past; I had an .ftm file from before that was just the drum roll at the beginning, but just never found the motivation to add more to it. Either way, I at least have closure on that.

This happens to be another request from gembound prism, and instead of using VRC6 as per usual I decided to do something different. Even though I haven't played any of the games, I do know of some of its history. Persona, as some of you are probably aware, was a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei, and the 'Shin' part got its beginnings with the Super Famicom release in 1992. Prior to that, there were two games titled 'Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei' and 'Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II', released for the Famicom. The latter is relatively important to me as someone who uses Famitracker, as it's one of the few games on the system to support the N163 chip made by Namco back in the day. As such, I decided to try doing this cover not only with the same sound chip, but with the same amount of channels and positions and by using waveforms from the original game.
Naturally, this was a bit of pain in the ass to pull off. The main reason I don't use N163 often is because I could not for the life of me figure out how to make it work up until this cover, as I was not aware that you needed to have the instruments in separate 'positions', otherwise they'd clash. Once I figured that out, actually making the song work was still a little annoying because the waveforms I used for this song didn't quite work for what the original was going for at first. I did eventually figure it out, but I may revisit the chip later on just to get some practice in.
Either way, it was still fun to work on, so I hope you enjoyed this!

Much like with 'Adventure', my first exposure to the casino theme from Dragon Quest IV was in Fortune Street by way of the "Arcade" space (mostly Slurpodrome), and it's catchy enough to get stuck in my head for days on end. I actually wasn't gonna cover this initially, but then I looked ahead in my schedule and saw that this was a Friday the 13th, and I figured I had to do it at some point. Also, I decided to experiment with having the first part of the melody layered twice in different fine tunes to create a ragtime piano effect (similar to how SMB2 does it), and I think it turned out well. Since there's two versions with different pitches I couldn't really decide which one I liked more. I went with the key of C like in the NES version since that's first in the .nsf anyway, but I also kinda liked the one in the key of F? I dunno, I've included both regardless so as to let you decide for yourself.

It's Cirno Day! As this is a year ending in a 9 I knew I'd want to do a Cirno cover again. The original plan was to do a straight cover of Beloved Tomboyish Daughter without anything fancy since I'd already done Cirno's Perfect Math Class well over a year ago. Then I listened to a couple of other Cirno chiptune covers, and thought to myself "I don't think anyone's tried doing this in a time signature of 9/8 or 9/6 yet, right?". Naturally, this snowballed into what eventually became Nine Fairies Over Eight. I had a lot of fun working on this, and I hope you enjoy it!
I'm also posting this really early (at around midnight my time) due to unforeseen router issues, and since I don't want to bank on it being fixed by the usual posting time and risk forgetting and being late I'm having to use my phone to get this set up.

I made this to coincide with a challenge run I was doing earlier this year, partially because it's such an ear worm that I had to do it. The fact this series is getting a new mainline entry is a stroke of good luck, though I never ended up posting this to coincide with that. I'm only posting it now because I don't have anything else I really wanted to put here today (in fact, this was originally gonna be when I posted Star Lavadom, but I made a last minute decision to put that first instead). This ended up being one of the requests I got earlier, and I'll be frank: I don't think I liked the original all that much. I think it has to do with how noisy the percussion is compared to the more melodic stuff, combined with how flat some of the instruments are in general. It's not a terrible song by any means, but I just didn't enjoy listening to it. It does pick up near the end of the loop. That being said, I did still have fun working on it, though! I decided to try doing this in the Kirby's Adventure style, to see how well this song would fit. I hope you enjoy this cover!

This was something I kinda wanted to cover this year since, after listening to it, it's actually really catchy. Initially I was gonna hold off depending on whether or not I was gonna do a full Touhou Week this year. Those plans fell through, so I wound up doing this anyway.
I tried going for a mix of classical and hard rock sound for this, since in ZUN's words, "you can't have a maid without hard rock", but I'm not 100% sure the instruments I used exactly fit that goal. Either way, I knew I had to have the choir in the middle, so I broke out FL Studio once again and made some choir .wav files to use as DPCM samples. Also, just like with Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17, I greatly prefer the in-game pitch compared to the MIDI pitch since I think the chords fit the song better, though as before I've included both since I still think they sound good in the original.

I was not exactly planning on doing more Bloodstained covers until after I'd played through the game (and in all honesty I only hadn't because my birthday was coming up due to an honor system where I don't buy games until afterwards), but a couple of viewers elsewhere requested I cover some more Bloodstained tracks, so I'm getting around to one of those now. Had to do this mostly by ear, but I think it turned out pretty well. Of course I stuck with the Akumajou Densetsu format (i.e. no triangle) since it's Castlevania-related. I've said this in the past, but Lotus Land Story is one of my favorite mainline Touhou games, and that still holds true for its Extra Stage. I knew I wanted to make a remix of the Extra Stage song...if for no other reason than it keeps getting stuck in my head with how many time's I've gone through it just trying to get to Mugetsu and Gengetsu. I'll be honest, I don't even remember how many times I've played this stage just trying to beat it, and I am honestly a little sick of playing that stage. I still think the song is fantastic, and even if it's not my favorite it's yet another really good track from a really good soundtrack. I also was not sure if I wanted to do a cover of the in-game version, the MIDI version, or Jynx's arrange that was made for the Re:LLS videos since they were all really good, so I decided to incorporate all three, though I think I went a little overboard with that idea...

As per usual, I've been watching Chuggaaconroy's recent playthrough of Chrono Trigger, and I think it might be one of the best Let's Plays I've ever watched. I knew how good the soundtrack to Chrono Trigger was even before that, though I didn't quite anticipate just *how* good it would actually be. Schala's Theme was one of the tracks that caught me off guard in just how emotional it was. I decided relatively recently I wanted to do a cover of it, though as I couldn't fit it into my Friday schedule I decided to put it in the Monday timeslot. Of all the things I would expect to get a revival this year, Cotton was not one of them, yet BEEP, a shop located in Akihabara that apparently now specializes in publishing, is handling a so-called 'Cotton Reboot' which aims to bring the series back to the Sharp X68000 as well as modern systems (Switch, PC, and PS4). I figured because of this, I'd do a cover of two of this game's songs. I've already posted the Intro on Twitter prior to uploading, but that was actually finished after the Stage 1 theme.
I am admittedly a little excited for this re-release, partially since I've only heard good things about it in passing and would like to play it, and while I'm unfortunately unable to get the X68000 version due to cost and not actually having the system to play it on, I am eagerly awaiting the Switch release!

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door celebrates the 15th anniversary of its Japanese launch today, and I decided to prepare a cover of its final boss theme to celebrate. I make no secret that this is one of my favorite games of all time, and while I realize it has its issues (the backtracking, it's the backtracking), I still think the things outweigh any issues I have. The final boss, the lore surrounding her and ESPECIALLY the music, are among those positives, and every single time I play through the game I always look forward to fighting the Shadow Queen.
I'd also wanted to do her first phase as well, but I got a little sidetracked along the way and gave priority to her second phase theme, so unfortunately I've held off for the time being.

Since the Final Splatfest for Splatoon 2 is upon us, I decided to do a cover of the most well known boss theme from the series. This song still holds up today as one of my favorite final boss themes, and is an absolute blast to listen to. Also if you are taking part in the Final Splatfest good luck to everyone, regardless of what team you're on!

BOSS IS APPROACHING!
- SEVEN FORCE -
DL Folder: https://mega.nz/#F!V5M0haKb!D1qcszUfKVdxKYQXnQGYCA
Gunstar Heroes is yet another game I've been meaning to get around to, partly because it inspired the creation of Cuphead (my favorite game of 2017) and partly because of all of the creative bosses it has. Seven Force stands the test of time as one of the most ambitious bosses I have ever seen in a video game, especially by Genesis standards, and its theme is just as good. That being said, while I think this song is kickass, I felt a little annoyed that the song was *merely* in 4/4, so I decided to take a shot at it in 7/8 with this remix. Not sure if it was the right call in the long run, but it was honestly bugging me a bit.
Also as a heads up, there probably won't be any of my usual content until the 15th at the earliest due to birthday shenanigans this week.

The first part of this track was done in acknowledgement of Gradius' 34th anniversary, but soon after I did the Stage 1 theme, since that got stuck in my head. I once again went with the Akumajou Densetsu style of VRC6, where I didn't use the Triangle, because it would be the most fitting for a Konami track. I also *really* wanted to get a Gradius clear done prior to this, but unfortunately, I was not able to get that done (I blame the moai. It's always the stupid moai!).

SCRAMBLE ZE FAIRIES!
DL Folder: https://mega.nz/#F!Y11lkCCb!dMkR5-0x4E3QJtNXlh8-4A
Panel de Pon, or Tetris Attack as it was known in the West, was a SNES puzzle game that is notorious for having a bunch of cute fairies that got replaced with Yoshi characters with the Tetris title (thus screwing this game over for future releases). Its sequels fared no better, as while the devs did rename it to the more sensible Puzzle League from then on, they had tried using the fairy characters again but ended up using other franchises instead (from Yoshi, to Pokemon, to Animal Crossing, to none at all), and the only time they made a sequel that revisited that concept was on the Gamecube, as a quasi-remake of Pokemon Puzzle League on the N64, and of course that never made it to the US or Europe. On top of that, the easter egg in the DS version got removed outside of Japan, so I'm partially convinced someone at Nintendo of America has it out for the fairies. (At least Smash keeps them in some peoples' memories?)
Either way, I wanted to do a cover from this game for a while, since probably 2017, if I remember right? However, for whatever reason every time I wanted to start doing it, I either stopped at the beginning or pushed it back in favor of something else. Eventually, I stopped stalling and decided to just do it, and post it no later than the 21st so I would have no excuse to stall further. I also did it in FDS so I'd break from the VRC6 mold for a bit.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night launches on Tuesday, and supposedly since they listened to their fans it'll actually be really good? I'd already done a cover from Bloodstained way back in 2016, but since my cover of Voyage of Promise got completely blown out of the water by Ippo Yamada's own cover heard in Curse of the Moon, I figured I'd try my luck again, this time in the actual Castlevania 3 style. I think I did a far better job than last time, though that's probably because I've had a lot of experience since then.
Of course, knowing my luck there'll already be a CV3-style cover of this from Jake Kaufman in the official soundtrack that makes my arrange sound dated by comparison.

I figured the Contra Anniversary Collection was coming out soon-ish, and I wanted to practice doing Akumajou Densetsu-style VRC6 covers, so I decided to try doing a Contra song in that style since it's also a Konami game. I found that using suspended chords fit the Jungle Theme really well and, combined with the sawtooth bass and percussion made it sound a lot more action-y (if that makes any sense). I also tried to make a guitar-like sound around frame 0A, but jury's out on whether that actually worked to this song's benefit.

This was another request from gemstone prism, and honestly I think I screwed myself trying to avoid using the triangle channel again. I ran into the same issue I had last time, where by not using the Triangle I didn't have enough channels to make the chords work, which is a pain in the ass when dealing with sweeping orchestral songs like this. The only reason I even bothered with it for this and Music of the Night was because I wanted to try and do something fancy like with Castlevania III's Japanese soundtrack, and unfortunately this was not a good fit for either since Castlevania typically balances its more orchestral sound with a rockin' percussion, and I don't have that luxury here. Thankfully, since I had the .ftm for Music of the Night on hand, I was able to speed up the process a bit.
Not sure how I feel about the cover itself, though. I liked trying to make a duet work by giving 'Christine' and 'Raoul' distinct voices (read: different Duty/Noise outputs), like I did with the original cover I did back in 2016. Unfortunately after working on this I'm feeling pretty burnt out on making Phantom of the Opera covers, so for my sanity I think I'm gonna hold off on making these types of covers for a while.
Also as a fair warning, I'm going to be out of town this weekend. I will not be posting any videos on Monday as a result, and though I should be home afterwards I won't be posting next Friday, partly because I don't know if I'll catch anything while I'm up there, but I would really like to get caught up on my planned tracks for this year.

Welcome to Ryme City!

Honestly, prior to launch I was cautiously optimistic about the Detective Pikachu movie. It looked better than the usual attempts at making a live action video game movie, but at the same time the video game movie curse exists for a reason (and the Sonic trailer is a fresh reminder why). My biggest concern going into it was that the music would either play it safe with lackluster remixes from the games or, worse off, be generic in of itself.
Then I saw the movie, and the music for Ryme City completely blew me away.
No, seriously, this one track sounds like it was taken right out of the Unova games and given an orchestral facelift, and given how much I adore the Unova duology, that's not something I say lightly. I should not be surprised, though; the composer for this was Henry Jackman, who had also worked on Wreck-It Ralph and produced quite a few great tracks there, on top of having actual video game composition experience (even if it's for Uncharted, of all things). Needless to say I *immediately* wanted to work on a GB cover of it. I was a little worried that only having three channels, one of which I had to also use for toms, would not be enough, but it wasn't too bad, actually! I think the best part about working with this is that I get to mess around with uncommon time signatures again (7/8 in this case).

This was a request from Greninja, and while I think I'd heard of this album before I've never listened to it, let alone thought I'd be making covers from it. Nevertheless, it was an interesting challenge. Since there's no sheet music or reference to go off of, I had to do all of this pretty much by ear, and while it wasn't as big of an issue in the first half, the second half had a piano-esque solo that I'm positive that I missed a few notes here and there. That being said, it was actually really fun to work on, and I like the end result (I even like how the triangle piano turned out).

Every year, there's a semi-official poll on the THWiki to figure out which characters, which of ZUN's music (including Seihou tracks) and which works are the most popular. How it usually goes is that Reimu is the best girl, either Septette for a Dead Princess or U.N. Owen Was Her is the best song, and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the best game. While I'm not entirely invested in it, I decided to take a peek earlier this year to see which song was the least popular, and it turns out Primrose Shiver was not only voted least popular song, I could barely even find any arranges of this song, let alone covers of this in Famitracker. I've always wanted to play through the Seihou games, and have in fact played a bit of VIVIT-99 earlier this year, but I've had issues loading Shuusou Gyoku in the past so I never got around to doing so. It's a bummer, because ZUN's soundtrack for this is pretty good! I also kinda like the cactus motifs this game has, even if I'm kinda sick of desert levels thanks to its overuse in the Mario franchise. This song is something I've wanted to cover for a while, and in fact it was already on my to-do list for this year. Although it didn't affect my desire to cover it, the VIVIT-99 April Fool's game made me decide to finally commit to it.
Also since there's two different official versions with different keys (in-game being A#-minor, and C-minor being the ZUN arrange), I included both in the .nsf/.ftm.

While the original Super Mario Bros. has been thoroughly discussed, mastered, and dissected over the past 33 years to the point there's not much to say about it that hasn't already been said, I much prefer the GBC port. This is not just because I grew up with this version, and not just because it was one of the first two games I ever played (the other being Pokemon Crystal), but I feel like it adds so many features and extra modes that it all but replaces the original in my mind. The You vs Boo mode was fun to try, the Challenge Mode made me memorize the layout of every level, the Fortune Teller, finding all the Yoshi Eggs, looking at all the character art in the album, all the banners meant for the Camera that I never got as a kid. Hell, this is part of why I tend to enjoy difficult games, as it gave me a way to try the Lost Levels since I took the whole 'too hard for Americans' bit as a challenge.
I could go on and on, but if I did this description would go on forever. However, the thing that ties this all together is the new music, which if I didn't know any better would sound like this was meant to be in the original to begin with. Chief among the new tracks is the credits theme, and while it's mostly a variation of the starman theme it still manages to be a legitimately good song in its own right. That's why, to celebrate this port's 20th anniversary next Wednesday, I decided to get a remix of that ready for today.

The inception for this came about when I was messing around in Famitracker while listening to Bad Apple!! ft. nomico. Namely, I was playing the in-game version during various portions, and Peaceful at the end. It's incredibly stupid, but one day I wondered if I should make a remix of this song with that in there so I would stop doing that. Then I had the worst idea: since Bad Apple is the most popular song from LLS that hasn't been used elsewhere (at the expense of every other song), I would put the melodies to every song from LLS' main soundtrack to the beat of Bad Apple with the sole exception of Bad Apple itself. The result is today's video.
I was not entirely sure I could actually do it, mind you – there's only so much you could fit into the base song at once. I even had to combine a few tracks to make it all fit without extending the base track further than needed. The end result, I think, was completely worth it, so hopefully you enjoyed this!
(Also this was not intended to be released right around the announcement of Touhou 17: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, but I'll take it.)

This was a request from a user named 'Triple Shiny', and I was honestly afraid to do this track at first. This is already an 8-bit song that has a lot of fancy music techniques, and trying to adapt it to a more powerful chip was begging for trouble. I'm actually still convinced I got a few backing notes wrong here and there. However, I think the end result was completely worth it. I once again used DPCM choirs (as I felt they fit the context this song plays in), and the .nsf and .ftm contain a version without the DPCM choirs, as well as a version without DPCM period.

If you're not familiar with Orb-3D, good, keep it that way.
If you actually want to know what Orb-3D is, it's a puzzle pong-like game for the NES (technically a port of a similar C64 game) where you have to lead a ball across a fake-3D space and solve various puzzles, ranging from bowling, tic-tac-toe, bingo, a memory game, chess, a weird eyeball puzzle, a spelling game, and even an actual MAZE. Your ultimate goal is to defeat the evil space wizard, Krohn, and stop him from destroying the universe. You have little-to-no control over your ball, and the only thing you can do outside of hit the ball with your paddles is go into the screen and hope you hit something (i.e. how you solve puzzles). While you're doing this, you also have to keep an eye on your fuel, and if you're running low you can go to Vern's Orb-O-Rama and fuel up, but the catch is you have seven openings to jump through (with small entrances that close up if you take too long), AND you have to pay with your score to do so (admittedly a neat idea, marred by everything else about this game), on top of your paddles *shrinking* every time you go to Vern's. This all would be frustrating, but tolerable, but it's made even worse when you consider that, while this game has roughly 5-6 songs (hence the 'medley') you only get to hear one or two for most of the game, meaning if you decide to commit to it you'll get stuck with an ear-worm (and not even that good of one).
If it sounds like the game is hot garbage, good news: it is *exactly* as bad as it sounds.
Suffice to say, from all I've seen and heard of this game I'm staying far away from it. That being said, I like some aspects of the music, and wanted to try making something good out of it, not because I think this trash fire is completely redeemable but because I wanted to challenge myself.

For the uninitiated, this song is from the DS adaptation of Cory in the House, a game that's become a running joke on the internet. Part of it stems from the show it's adapted from being considered 'the best anime', part of it being from ironic reviews claiming it's good, part of it being that it's a genuine guilty pleasure for some. I figured I'd eventually get around to doing a track from this game as a joke, so one day last year I decided to just do it and release it for April Fool's Day.

David Wise is a legendary composer, and he's more than earned my respect for his work on stuff like Battletoads and Donkey Kong Country. However, during his tenure at Rare during its NES era he also got to work on some of their other, not as well-known (or high quality) games. This happened to be one of them. Did you know that in Sesame Street 1-2-3, it has a hard difficulty that's effectively the same puzzle for a little over thirty minutes straight? I didn't. Did you also know that this song plays for the entirety of it (outside of a jingle that plays when you clear a puzzle)? I didn't. Want to know how I know that? You can thank ProtonJon for playing through it last year out of spite (and I'll be upfront about this, these next few videos are going to be because of his streams, so buckle up!).
That being said, this song's not that bad. I had fun working on this cover, even if it was a major ear-worm as a result. It could be a way worse song from a way worse game.

Tuesday marks the 25th anniversary of one of my favorite games of all time: Super Metroid. I wanted to celebrate this anniversary by doing a cover of its ending theme. However, somewhere along the way I decided to mix in Metroid 1's ending theme in that style. I think my rationale at the time was that Lower Norfair snuck parts of the Metroid 1 title theme in the middle, so it wouldn't be that unfitting?

An 8 bit song I made in a harmonic minor. I hope you enjoy :)

It's become somewhat of a running joke that everyone covers this song in Famitracker at least once. Instead I decided to cover it in the soundchip in the NES' first competitor in the 80's, partly because I wanted to avoid using Bambootracker for a fourth times in a row for Monday's timeslot. Nothing too spectacular here, since Kraid's Lair is a relatively simple song, but I hope you enjoy it!

I don't care what anyone says, that one shot at the beginning of Venom still holds up.

Whenever I go to search “Venom Star Fox Famitracker” on YouTube, all I find is either Venom Boss, 64's Venom, or Venom from Star Fox 2. I never find covers of the actual stage theme from Star Fox 1, which is funny because it does exist...as part of a cover of Super Smash Bros. Melee's Corneria music. This has bugged me for ages, and what I enjoy about Smash Ultimate is that you can FINALLY set that song to the proper stage. Regardless, I wanted to do a cover of this song since it was stuck in my head, and since it's a short enough song I threw in the Venom Bass stage music since I don't think I've seen this covered at all.

It's been a while since I've tried only using a 'Blank' instrument for one of these remixes, so when I decided to work on Lower Brinstar, I wanted to try that instead of making a set of instruments off hand. I did cheat a bit by having 3 DPCM samples for bass and choir. That being said, I think I did alright, especially since I've gotten used to how A0X commands work.

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in North America, and since I did quite a few Sonic 3 tracks last year I figured I'd at least do one for the start of this year. Angel Island Zone was a perfect fit for this, then, though remixing it was a bit of a hassle. I think if it wasn't the steel drum arpeggio, it was making that lead about halfway through not sound completely terrible. Hopefully it turned out alright?
