Acts Of The Apostles (Movie)

This is kind of a long video because I took two sermons, put them together and added background music.

If you don't like long sermons or religious and Biblical speeches, then this video might not be for you.

There is a ridiculous amount of utter balderdash bleated by loony lefties and silly socialists about the ‘evils’ of capitalism. They regard anyone able to make a financial profit from their own endeavours as reprehensible, little more than a war criminal. This is because such critics are so totally useless at making money, they want to castigate anyone who displays success in this field.

I have no time for idiots and buffoons who whinge about ‘love’ and ‘non-profit making firms’. If a firm doesn’t make a profit then it goes out of business, their employees are made redundant and that’s all there is to it. The title of the piece (first recorded in 2009 and issued on Musik Als Globale Waffe with truly horrendous results, for much of which I must be held culpable) is derived from a book by Tory MP John Redwood. The title is so preposterous I knew I had to use it! Of course, national currencies have long since been replaced with the ubiquitous Euro...a fate the British refused to tolerate, bless ‘em. That’s the island mentality for you: beefeaters belching in the cloisters, messing tights, watching Match Of The Day...on a raft with sharks circling.

The feel of the Franc in a big Swiss bank is definitely what I’m worth
and the lure of the Lira only brings me nearer to a perfect heaven on Earth.
The shine on a Schilling is more fulfilling than any religion you choose,
for the Yankee Dollar, not a clerical collar, is the faith all people use.

The worlds’ affairs in stocks and shares must never let the market crash;
there’s money to be made so let’s be paid in plenty of hard cash.

The power of the Pound has a marvellous sound, especially in ones’ pockets,
while a billion Yen builds all our men computers, schools and rockets.
The rattle of the Rupee and a million or two p gives me jitters of joy
and a barrel of Yuan in a bullet proof van is even better than a Chinese boy.

Why waste your days in a love lorn haze with an unrequited romance?
There’s money to be made when we all trade in a world of global finance.

In 2007 we recorded our first rendition of this number (on the album Rock In Opposition: Phase 4). Quite frankly, it was a mess and really we should have waited until we could do it justice. This is strange when you realise it is one of the simplest, easiest pieces I have ever written. Quite how we continually managed to muck it up so severely is beyond my comprehension.

Since I was made redundant (thanks to Hackney loony leftie council) in 2016, I have applied for 57 different jobs, all of which proved unsuccessful so far but that will not stop me from continuing my search. Previously I’ve never been unemployed for more than a couple of months but more pertinently I can honestly say even during a particularly traumatic spell of poverty when I had no job and nowhere to live, I never begged for money on the streets. To me, this is utterly repugnant behaviour.

If you need food – take it. Loot supermarkets, occupy town halls and protest but never, under any circumstances, become a beggar. When you beg for money what you actually say is ‘I’m a failure who has neither dignity nor self respect’. I despise such scum. Besides, most beggars are simply work-shy idle layabouts who need a good kick up the arse before they are sent to the nearest job centre.

When I go to work as the sun comes up,
there you slouch with your little tin cup.
What I earn in a month you scrounge in a week,
yet more free money is what you seek.
Dressed in rags that you’ve designed
especially to fool those kind
and generous people who are blind
to what you really are.

You’re nothing but a dirty, lazy little yob –
go and have a bath and find yourself a job.

When I leave work at the end of the day,
there you are, standing in my way,
your hand held out as if to say
‘please give me what you earned today’.
So come on and join me, everyone:
use a club, axe, knife or gun.
Bashing beggars can be fun,
so clean your street today.

You’re nothing but a dirty, lazy little yob –
go and have a bath and find yourself a job.

This is another work from the late 1980s written for The Apostles but never recorded. It is my response to the government directive to allow drug addicts to receive free syringes on the national health while most diabetics were obliged to pay for theirs. This affected us particularly because Dave Fanning’s brother Andrew was diabetic and so was Sean Stokes, who was then the guitarist in the group.

Note: I am not averse to people taking drugs. On the contrary, I encourage it. We all have a right to alter our state of consciousness and no government can ever be allowed to divest us of this right. While I personally prefer not to take drugs, I refuse to impose my lifestyle on anyone else – but if you do take drugs and you happen to become addicted to a certain substance, don’t go squealing to me about your suffering – I’ve no sympathy for a man who gives himself a sore head.

Let me say hello to all the junkies in this town.
I want to see you suffocate, I want to see you drown.
I’ll be so satisfied when you’re no more around.

You are a coward, you’re too scared to live your life.
I’ll dance upon your grave while I smile at the sky.
The world will be a better place after you die.

Let me give you a needle the colour of an ace of spades;
I’ll be so happy when your last dawn finally fades.
You’re an insult to mankind – I hope you die of AIDS.

You’re turning blue – that’s the last time you’ll be high.
We’re sick of you so hurry up and die.

Here is another track from our 33rd album, Better Dead Than Red. Ragnar Redbeard is a pseudonym for a writer whose mid 20th book Might Is Right caused consternation on its first appearance. Its contents were not easily assimilated by readers who had just lived through world war two yet, ironically, that mighty conflict only serves to offer confirmation of the sentiments it contains.

The middle section contains further quotes from his book that particular inspire me. Musically, I arranged this as a pop song with a central section that includes avant garde elements. I asked Colin not to play any hi-hat or cymbals on his drum kit but concentrate purely on the skins. Fritz enjoys himself immensely on a rather battered but still serviceable horn he borrowed from Dieter Gerhard, himself a classical musician (long since retired). By the way, yes, I am aware I’ve swiped the melody of the final line of each verse in New Order and transplanted it to serve the same function here. As a conservationist I’m all in favour of recycling.

The birds used in this work are Rooks and a pair of Choughs. The latter remain the least known British member of the Corvine family (imagine Crows with bright red beaks and legs) and are found in Ireland, the extreme west coast of Wales and parts of Cornwall. We dedicate this work respectively to Boyd Rice whose work has continued to inspire us since 1990.

Might was right when Caesar bled upon the stones of Rome
and might was right when Joshua led his hordes on Jordans’ foam.
Might was right when German armies entered Paris gay.
It’s the gospel of the ancient world, the logic of today.

Sword strong races own the Earth and ride the conquerors’ car
and liberty’s never been won except by deeds of war.
Might is right when empires sink in storms of steel and flame
and it is right when weakling breeds are hunted down like game.

Then what’s the use of dreaming dreams that each shall have his own
by forceless votes of timid fools who blindly sweat and moan?
A curse is on their cankered brains; their very bones decay.
Go trace your fate in the iron game’s the logic of today.

That the strong must ever rule the weak is grim primordial law.
On the planet’s brutal threshing floor the meek are beaten straw.
Then ride to power on foemens’ necks; let nothing bar your way.
If you’re fit, you’ll rule and reign is the logic of today.

Prove you’re right by deeds of might, of splendour and renown.
If need be, march through plains of Hell to dash opponents down.
If need be, die on scaffold high in mornings misty grey,
for liberty or death is still the logic of today.

This number was atrociously mangled by The Apostles in 1985 when it appeared on the album Punk Obituary. Unusually it was also mangled (perhaps not quite so atrociously) by UNIT when we tried to resurrect it in 2007 (for the album Rock In Opposition: Phase 4). In 2018 I decided to radically modify the arrangement and remove all the extraneous instruments that cluttered up the previous accounts. This is the definitive version although I admit in places my saxophone playing is a bit tatty.

Like a character who doesn’t exist, taken from a fictional book;
if I died, I wouldn’t be missed (unworthy of a second look).
I’m an error that doesn’t equate the probability of chance.
I’m too early, they’re too late, not given a second glance.
Like an oak, ash, beech or birch, I took time to mature;
but still I find after my search you’re a virus with no cure.

Like a rebel in the P.L.O., fighting for my land
against a cold and callous foe I cannot understand,
I feel I struggle on my own against an enemy I cannot see
from the void to the great unknown: one to infinity.
I cannot cry, wail, sob or weep: there are no tears to hide.
My emotions have gone to sleep; in fact, I think they’ve died.

This is one of my earliest works although I had the music complete (in 1982) 4 years before I finally found a suitable lyric for it. The Apostles murdered the poor ballad on their album Punk Obituary and then, in 2002, irritated by the limitations of my voice, I committed a serious error: I asked Sheng Wai Leung, one of the teenage boys from Hackney Chinese Youth Club, to sing it because he claimed (wrongly) he was a pretty decent singer. He may have been pretty but a decent singer he was not. Still, it made a change from my own feeble caterwaul....or so I believed.

After the fun and frolics that caused a major eruption in the group (see the anthem Forbidden Love on this You Tube site where I explain the story), Sheng refused even to look at me, let alone speak to me. Like so many young Chinese lads, he was a bigot but also a coward – he was too scared to say openly to my face what he thought of me. Christ, why is the world so full of cunts? Anyway, finally I decided the ballad merited a proper recording. I admit I regard the music as rather moronic and the lyric is a weak, whining moan of which I am rather ashamed but other people like it so I’ve retained it in its entirety.

Have you ever been attacked in the street, kicked to the ground?
Have you ever been a victim of bully boys pushing you around?
Have you ever had a broken bottle or a club in your face
or gangs of frightened cowards wrecking your place?
Well, there’s a proverb and it strikes a noble chord:
he who lives by the sword will die by the sword.

Too scared to belong to the human race,
it’s only themselves they dare not face.
I refer to spineless scum acutely insecure:
they never knew their fathers, that’s for sure.
Anybody can be dangerous when he’s part of a horde:
he who lives by the sword will die by the sword.

Remember: bullies and bigots live on borrowed time,
for them there comes a day when they will each pay for their crime.
There’s always someone else who’s tougher than them,
someone who plays far rougher than them.
Well, upon these bastards I bestow this award:
he who lives by the sword will die by the sword.

We recorded a version of this in 2002 which, although decent enough, contains clumsy moments that annoy me. I also tweaked the lyric here and there to improve it. It appears on the album Revenge & Retribution, recorded in 2018.

I have no Caucasian guilt and I will not accept the blame
for a government that murdered in Imperialisms’ name.
That government is there because of blood and tyranny.
That government was certainly not authorised by me.
I’ve heard so many left wing bigots preach naiveté;
it’s unfortunate they overlook some recent history.
Whether Hungary, Prague or Cambodia, innocent folk are slain,
so let those snivelling socialists all hide their heads in shame.
I am not responsible for what your country’s done.
If you’re looking for the perpetrator, I am not the one.

Socialism does not work, it’s plain enough to see.
The human race is not mature enough for liberty.
Their brave new world is based upon extremism and hate,
yes, their communist utopias are in a sorry state.
The plunder of all Africa by European greed
is another fine example of a typical human creed.
Racialists are black and white, they preach a hymn of hate.
You’ll find them on the loony left in every town and state.
I am not responsible for what your country’s done.
If you’re looking for the perpetrator, I am not the one.

Human nature has proved throughout recorded history,
most people can’t be trusted with responsibility.
It’s not for me to criticise the views that people hold
but it’s shame they all believe each fairy story they are told.
I never sent six million Jews to lonely German graves.
It wasn’t me who sold or purchased any negro slaves.
India was never ever colonised by me,
for when all these crimes occurred I wasn’t even born, you see.
I am not responsible for what your country’s done.
If you’re looking for the perpetrator, I am not the one.

Paedophiles and muggers prove our nation’s in a mess.
We need a strong new order to control human excess,
so join up, form a citizens militia. Lend a hand
to restore some law and sanity into our troubled land.
Drug dealers and street gangs prove our nation’s in a mess.
We need a strong new order to control human excess,
so join up, form a citizens militia. Lend a hand
to restore some law and sanity into our troubled land.
I am not responsible for what your country’s done.
If you’re looking for the perpetrator, I am not the one.

I first heard this gently satirical song on a CD of ancient recordings by Scottish folk trio The Corries, for whom I have considerable respect. I added extra chords, a bass guitar line and vocal harmonies plus some feisty fanfares for Fritz. I also changed the lyric of the 1st verse to represent my perverse sexual desires...not that anyone outside Scotland will understand it, of course.

You’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.
Wi’ ye bare blue stride an’ ye bonnet tae tha side,
you’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.

As I went past the hammer works ma hairt began tae beat
watching a’ they factory laddies trockle doon tha street.
Wi’ they gyte an’ glaikit paggerin’ an’ a pawky dunt an’ ding,
whit widna gie tae be far ben wi’ ilka braw wee yin.

You’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.
Wi’ ye bare blue stride an’ ye bonnet tae tha side,
you’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.

Och, the Scots it is a novel tongue; the meaning’s hard tae tell.
It’s in an’ oot the henny noot. It’s tapsalteerie all
but we are only daein’ oor best. We try tae dae it well
yet whit this song is all aboot we dinna ken oorsel’.

You’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.
Wi’ ye bare blue stride an’ ye bonnet tae tha side,
you’re ma wee gallus bloke nae mair.

Here’s a track from our 32nd album, Revenge & Retribution. I doubt we’ll alter this since it’s fine as it stands. Originally recorded for Time To Think, a hardcore punk project formulated by Pete Williams in the early 1990s, I wanted a number for vocals and drums only, purely to add variety to the cassette (most hardcore punk bands record the same number 20 times and shove them on a record – boring). The lyric is severely out of date now but I’ve not altered it – thus it is a historical document only.

This is a track from our 32nd album (Revenge & Retribution, previously awarded a thoroughly daft Greek title which we quickly abandoned). Here’s another number from our 32nd album (Revenge & Retribution, previously given a daft Greek title that we abandoned) and one first recorded by Time To Think shortly after the Earth’s crust cooled. I’ve deliberately retained the arrangement used for Time To Think (out of deference to Pete Williams whose searing vocal I sorely miss). Yes yes yes, I know, I’ve stolen those bridge passages from You’re Just A Joke by AYS but sod it, steal from the best and you can’t go wrong. (Apologies to John Cato.)

This piece was written for Time To Think in 1992, a project Pete formulated with myself and his pal Andrew Ross. It was basically our intention to subvert hardcore punk rock and mutate it into an idiom more adventurous and interesting. I don't believe we succeeded. None of these pieces were ever recorded properly in a studio so, for our next album (our 32nd) we recorded a brace of these pieces so finally the public can hear them as we intended them to sound.

This is the opening track on our 32nd album, Revenge & Retribution. The title amuses me and is motivated by a quote from The Red Flag which I inserted originally as one of my brief piano interludes but the tune is so wretched, I had to replace it with a much better one. I couldn’t resist the quotes from Johnny Todd, especially as I enjoy playing that bass guitar line on a keyboard. As for the British Grenadiers, I’ve no idea...I simply felt it fitted the mood of the music.

We recorded a crap version of this in 2009 for the album Musik Als Globale Waffe so it was always our intention to record it again, properly this time. The lyric is by Bobby Knotts, older brother of Alan Knotts who has been a correspondent of ours for more years than either of us care to admit.

Written for Time To Think (the project instigated by Pete Williams, then the drummer of UNIT) in the early 1990s while heavily under the influence of Boyd Rice and Ragnar Redbeard, this is an electric folk song with a message all Marxists will detest...which can only be a good thing, of course. I strongly recommend the book Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard (the pseudonym for Arthur Desmond) written in 1890 but still profoundly relevant today.

There once was a lassie who lived in Dunkeld,
a beautiful maiden no man had held.
At drooling suitors and lonely men she sneered.
On petulance and vanity she was reared.
A dashing young poet, a handsome bard,
thought he’d charm her heart, so hard.
She led him on and on until one day,
with a callous little grin, she sent him away.

A noble pipe major came frae Ayr,
blithely bold, becoming and fair.
He bought her clothes. He bought her rings,
the signs of weakness romance brings.
The piper met the poet, so forlorn,
whose heart, he said, by that lass was torn.
She left the piper purely out of spite
to play with his pipe alone at night.

Along came a stranger who took her by force.
He said he’d make her love him and she did, of course,
but after a fortnight her body was found:
a headless corpse rotting on the ground.
The man, you see, knew what to do.
He simply taught her a lesson or two.
He left behind a symbol of his hunt:
a knife still stuck inside her cunt.

I recorded a crap account of this in 1992 with Pete Williams for his cassette project Time To Think. This lyric is severely dated now (or at least I sincerely hope it is) but the number merited a decent recording despite its almost moronic simplicity. Anyway, it's never too late to give the British punk scene a kicking...it's what those white middle class cunts deserve.

I wrote this for Danny O’Rawe and Alan Knotts. While I most emphatically do not support the methods employed by the IRA during the 1970s and 1980s in Britain (there can be no mitigation for the murder of innocent people) I most definitely do support their beliefs and the reason for their rage. Notice when people struggle against a tyrannical regime abroad, they are called freedom fighters but when they struggle against oppressors in Britain, they are called terrorists. This is a track from our 32nd album, Revenge & Retribution.

The history of Eire, so green and so fair,
is written in the tears that mothers cry:
for 400 years every one of your peers
has sucked and bled our emerald island dry.
With each new invasion and armoured persuasion,
we wonder just how many more will die.
Long live the IRA, we’ve shaken quite enough of your red hands!
Long live the IRA, let us kick those English bastards from our lands.

The house of Hanover sent sweet William over
to rob, thieve and steal away our land.
We saw murderers join at the bridge on the Boyne
and stinking Billy had never looked so grand.
He ordered the slaughter, that day by the water,
as men and womens’ blood ran in the sand.
Long live the IRA, recall the sacrifice of Bobby Sands.
Long live the IRA and kick those English bastards from our lands.

From Dundee to Dover, you’re well heeled in clover
and why? Any history book will show.
We sold you our grain for your personal gain
yet our suffering you did not care to know;
our potatoes were late though it’s hunger we hate so
that some of us to America had to go.
Long live the IRA, we shall not bend our knees to foreign laws.
Long live the IRA, let us kick those English bastards from our shores.

That day of shame, the English came,
proud Erins’ men were drowned in blood and gore.
Not satisfied, as hundreds died,
the English crown demanded more and more;
where famine failed, the rest were jailed
or sent to die in trenches in the war.
Long live the IRA, each of us has bitter tales to tell.
Long live the IRA, let us kick those English bastards all to hell!

From 1999 to 2011 UNIT consisted of young musicians from south east Asia...plus me. Most of them were utter cunts. This brief epitaph is what they deserve. Of every Chinese and Vietnamese person ever to be a member of UNIT (and there were shed loads of them), only UJ and Michael Hoang have remained loyal friends. The others don’t even speak to me. That’s the kind of people they are. Well, if they ever hear this track, they’ll know what kind of person I am, too...far more of a cunt than they’ll ever be.

I wrote particularly intricate bass guitar parts for Herr Fritze (overdubbed – he’s good but even he has yet to learn how to play 3 bass guitars simultaneously although I suspect he’s working on it). I thought this made a pleasant change from my usual practise in which I chuck cart loads of vibraphones and organs around then swamp them under synthesisers and sprinkle the whole melange with a barrage of birds. You can only go so far with that routine before the public cries ‘enough already!’

I heard you on Alchemy Radio.
I heard you on The Spinning Man show.
I heard you on Don Campau’s radio show.
I heard you on Radio Overflow.
I heard you on Resonance radio.

As I listened to your playing, it remained a mystery
how you could ever be in the same pop group as me.

Yet there’s a deeper mystery much harder to define:
that’s how you could ever have been a friend of mine.

In February 2018 we commenced work on our 32nd album. Our key words are ‘fast’ and ‘aggressive’ in response to what life in modern Britain has become. This track provides a typical example of the kind of music we feature on it. So far we have completed 18 tracks for the project with a further 14 planned. Fabian Fritze and Colin Murrell do not appear on this particular track although they are actively involved in the others.

Beware of memories you receive. Question what you now believe.
Pick up signals you perceive. Ask yourself what you believe.

Just what is the media for? Why take less when you need more?
Newspapers, television and more – this is an information war.

Of this you can be sure:
it’s nothing short of a total war.
It’s nothing short of a total war!

This odd little track was originally recorded by The Apostles in 1987 but only in our rehearsal room on a cassette. The resultant mess was actually issued as a vinyl LP called Equinox Screams...for which I ought to formally apologise but I won’t. It forms one of a series of generally inconsequential numbers never considered sufficiently important to merit recording in a studio but since then my relationship with these works has changed (I include Diane, Tomorrow’s Children, Revenge and Rock Against Communism among these tracks) so here is my new arrangement of it, complete with 3 bass guitars...and no proper keyboards. Regard this as a companion to Rock Against Communism. It’s punk rock, Jim, but not as we know it.

I saw you beating up a wog in the street,
boots with metal studs on your feet.
You think you’re tough and yet your mind is weak.
Your future looks pretty bleak.
You have an army but no brains to rally ‘em,
just like a snail on valium.

All your friends are slowly leaving.
Do you know what you believe in?
Do you know what you are?
You’re a Nazi baby, a nasty baby:
domination is the price of fascination.
You’re a Nazi baby, a nasty baby:
euthanasia in India and Asia.
You’re a Nazi baby, a nasty baby:
your anatomy couldn’t ever flatter me.

Although you’re cute, you have no brain in your head.
You’d look much nicer dead.
You’re so embarrassed granddad was black
as you salute the union jack.
So you look forward to a master race
with a lobotomy behind your face.

Here’s one we prepared earlier. It depicts a specific kind of white, middle class rat bag found only in Britain. I suspect people in this country have met such odious ponces, especially if they lived through the early 1990s. I incorporated my penchant for scientific language into this verbal assault...with splendid results.

I’ve seen you on street corners, your dog on a piece of rope
like an electron round a nucleus that has no isotope:
too much work’s required to jump to another energy state.
You’d rather not arrive at all than turn up 2 hours late.

In orbit round your body fly your satellites here and there;
your atmosphere reveals an ecosystem in your hair.
Your non-event horizon is abysmal to behold:
if any god created you, I hope he broke the mould.

You’re as far from common decency as Saturn from the Sun.
A nanosecond in your company is a light year away from fun.
Your brain scan leaves a nice straight line on my magnetic tape:
your mind is a singularity from which intelligence can’t escape.

Your specific gravity is located in a tin
that you purchased with the pennies from the hat you keep them in,
but since you will not use your cash to live your life at all,
I hope you find a big black hole into which you can fall.

We recorded this in 1998 with Group No.1 (Martin, Coles, Burton, Fanning, Williams – the white band) in an arrangement deluged with jangly guitars...ugh. We had another go at it in 2006 with Group No.2 (Martin, Cheung, Thanh, Tran, Ngo) which marked a dramatic improvement and yet...and yet somehow it failed to satisfy me, mainly because the intricate bass guitar part could not be heard distinctly.

Group No.3 (Martin, Fritze, Murrell) avoided the number but now Group No.4 (Martin, Knight, Fritze, Murrell) has finally managed to record a decent rendition of this lovely number originally written in 1962 by Bridget Fry and her husband, musicologist Fritz Spiegel who arranged it for Piccolos, Harmonium, Snare Drum and Bass Drum whence it was utilised as the theme tune for Z Cars, a typically daft police series of the kind favoured by the BBC at the time.

It seems every UNIT album (except for Animalevolence) must contain a number that gives Marxists and Marxism a damned good kicking. Revenge & Retribution has New Order, Better Dead Than Red has Rock Against Communism and Media Morte In Vita Sumus has Miserable Marxists so here is our contribution to Unterladen Und Hoeren.

In a Marxist state the individual has no place;
any expression of dissent results in a boot against his face.
The masses tell you what to wear and how to act.
Anyone who disagrees is punished...and that’s a fact.

You can defer legality to justify brutality.
This is the harsh reality imposed by a mob mentality.

In a socialist society nobody needs a name
because everyone behaves, looks and sounds the same.
When human life is ordered by a mindless mass,
its achievements are superficial, puerile and crass.

You can defer legality to justify brutality.
This is the harsh reality imposed by a mob mentality.

‘To each according to his needs’ is their directive,
utilised as a form of oppression – it’s most effective.
If anyone suffers, there’s no need to apportion blame
when its perpetrators claim they’re simply a collective.

You can defer legality to justify brutality.
This is the harsh reality imposed by a mob mentality
so keep the red flag flying
and you’ll see good people dying.

In 2011 I completed my last will and testament, put my affairs in order and stood a full bottle of Grants whisky plus a bottle of tranquilisers (Mogodon) on my bedside table. This did not represent a moment of despair or depression; on the contrary I welcomed my impending death – aware I represented a complete failure (hardly anybody read my books or listened to my music) I decided I had nothing to contribute to the planet so it was time to remove myself from it.

This is one of 4 numbers I completed in 2011 for the album Per Ardua Ad Astra which I decided would be the final UNIT disc on which I appeared. However, perhaps due to my emotional state, the performance was rough and the tempo too brisk. I have rectified these anomalies and this is how the number should have sounded. I still question the validity of my continued existence on a planet already over-populated but now I have access to free recording studio time, I may as well make take advantage of it.

In that final hour when your friends turn sour
and nothing more remains to be done,
I’m painfully aware how it feels to be there;
I can promise you you’re not the only one...
When everything you’ve said about the horror in your head
is now a burden too brutal to bear
and the truth of the matter, if you cut out the patter,
is that nobody seems to care...

If hatred you received from people you believed
were previously friends of yours
has given you distress, well I must confess
that prejudice is probably the cause...
On that dreadful day when there is nothing more to say
and you ask yourself what it’s all for,
when you’ve tried to sort it out but there’s no longer any doubt
that you really cannot take it any more...

you need not tolerate all their bigotry and hate
in a life of misery and fear,
for there’s a place I know that you and I can go
where suffering and pain disappear.
Once you are there, you will soon become aware
that your previous life was really just a bore;
it’s a final, beautiful, merciful release
where people like us can at last find peace
and nothing matters any more.

I am particularly proud of this piece and I rank it among my best works. However, credit should be given where it is due: the 2 quiet sections between the 3 verses are based on part of the second movement of the Symphony No.2 (1968) by Otto Klemperer, the famous German conductor (1885-1973) who suffered all manner of physical ailments in addition to mental illness yet managed to remain active until his death. I remember I watched his cycle of Beethoven symphonies (presented on BBC as part of the anniversary celebrations – Beethoven was born in 1770) which he conducted over a period of 6 weeks in 1970 and this introduced me to the work of Ludwig Van Beethoven.

Here in this black corridor, a shaft of moonlight on the floor,
listening out for your call, I tried to make sense of it all.
Knocking again at your door, though you’re not here anymore...

there’s no escape from it all: every door is a wall.
Darkness and silence are here as if waiting for you to appear.
Is that a noise I can hear? (It sounded as if it was near.)
Into the blackness I peer, paralysed completely by fear...

but the only ghosts I could find were those that inhabit my mind.
This is my empty charade mocking the plans that we made.
I tried to stifle a yawn, silently waiting for dawn.
There’s nothing left here at all, only an echoing hall...

I was alone at the end, mourning the loss of a friend.
I was alone at the end.

So these are your feelings? They look pretty grim.
I would not treat anyone the way you treated him.
What is the point building relationships with anyone?

I tried to find reason – it didn’t make sense:
cold, callous brutality was your last line of defence.
What does it matter after everything is said and done?

I cried out in the darkness, forgetting just then
that the pain soon returns nine times out of ten.
I used to rage blindly against any and everyone.

I used to ask questions: what, where, when, why and how;
but eventually I realised, they really don’t matter now.
I still recall some of the people who I used to know.

You used to upset me – it seemed so unfair;
but now you can forget me for I no longer care.
All that remains are bitter memories from so long ago.
I cannot feel...not anymore...I used to feel pity...now I’ve nothing left.

The friends who I never had become, whatever the cost,
the friends who I never lost but I remember the night you stayed...

I simply hadn’t the heart, I couldn’t tear you apart.
I wouldn’t know where to start but I remember the plans we made...

I slowly crossed off the list the friends who didn’t exist;
at least they’ll never be missed but I remember just empty air...

Another night on my own, recalling people I’ve known,
reminds me I’m still alone but I remember I used to care...

We only made 1 previous recording of this (for School Farm Bungalow in 2004) and it remained virtually forgotten for decades. It forms part of a trilogy of pure pop songs (the others being The Boy Next Door and Karate Kid) with deliberately flippant lyrics of no particular substance written to create brief moments of respite from all those grim, bleak social realist and political polemical numbers I seem unable to stop churning out year after year. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

Yesterday a vision that I used to have began to fade.
Anyway, I was just another extra on a set I’d made.
You could say the ghost of all my fantasies was finally laid.
My minds’ eye paints a picture of a girl in front of me:
she could come from Greenland from what I’ve seen and
a dream inhabits my reality – I’ll never take her home with me.

Tell me why I can never have a lover just like Chau or Dave.
Why do I simply disregard the good advice they kindly gave?
Maybe I will take my bitterness and anger with me to my grave.
My minds’ eye paints a picture of a girl I’d like to see:
she could come from Finland the state I’m in and
a dream exists in my reality – I’ll never take her home with me.

I don’t know, to have a lover, who on Earth you need to be.
Now I know that there are so many others far worse off than me,
even so, is it a crime to ask for company?
My minds’ eye paints a picture of a boy so easily:
he could come from Glasgow or even Mars though
a dream’s invaded my reality – I’d never take him home with me.

We recorded a crap version of this for the 2004 album School Farm Bungalow. The flute playing by UJ was the only decent aspect of it...so we decided to give it another go. This rendition is more successful – the groove becomes a bit elastic toward the end but everyone had such fun playing it, we decided to leave it as it is.

All those songs about the girl next door
are nothing but vinyl coloured lies:
she’s 50 years old if she’s a day
and she doesn’t fancy me I’m glad to say.
Why can’t you confront your deepest fear?
Did you know that your dreams hardly ever come true?
Then again I’ve simply no idea
whether any of this really matters to you.

Oh I really love you, don’t you know?
By the way, can I borrow your stereo?
Oh I really love you, yes I care
and do you have any tea bags going spare?

Now and then I recreate myself
and I’m no longer scared to look in the mirror,
(I conjure up a boy of 23
with a body and a face that others want to see),
but when I do, I’m reminded of reality
and the face which stares right back at me
makes Frankenstein attractive basically
even if what I am is not what you see.

Oh I really love you, don’t you know?
By the way, can I borrow your video?
Oh I really love you with no pretence
but can you lend me fifty pence?

Can’t you see it’s easier for you
what with your well paid job and pretty face, too?
But if, to be like you, I need to play your game,
well, I’d rather sleep alone, thank you all the same.

We only made 1 previous recording of this (for Kämpfbereit in 1996) and it remained virtually forgotten for decades. It forms part of a trilogy of pure pop songs (the others being The Boy Next Door and Life Still Dreams) with deliberately flippant lyrics of no particular substance written to create brief moments of respite from all those grim, bleak social realist and political polemical numbers I seem unable to stop churning out year after year. This refers to an Irish lad I met when I commenced my brief and unsuccessful career as a karate student in 1989. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

The first time I saw him, I’ll never forget,
he was smoking a B & H cigarette, my eyes betrayed me:
he returned my stare with a diffident glare
though I hadn’t said anything yet.

There’s amusing trace behind that elfish face.
In my bed he wouldn’t look out of place but who am I kidding?
As Sensei called ‘yoi’ I saw that boy
and my imagination was a disgrace.

He punches Oi Zuki with a fist of steel
and kicks Mai Geri with a vicious zeal but I was only a red belt.
It isn’t my Kata that is the matter, I simply can’t admit this is real.

I bet he has a girlfriend, I bet he’s straight;
I suppose I want to know though maybe I’ll wait or should I ask him?
But later still with an hour to kill, he smiles at me the way he will...
does he know I’m in an awful state?

In my mind I have what I desire
through dubious means – oh what a liar!
How I deceive myself. I don’t give in but how can I win
when my feelings are on fire?
You have me jumping like a yo-yo for you’re the demon of the Dojo.

Also known by its alternative title 1•1 x 1010, this was issued on a cassette by The Apostles (in a performance that, unusually, was not nearly so wretched as most of their other recordings) and recorded again by UNIT for Rock In Opposition: Phase 4 but we acknowledged it to be a work in progress. Here, finally, is the definitive rendition of it. Note: the text is merely a science fiction story, a harmless fun filled frolic. I do not for one millisecond believe intelligent life exists elsewhere in the galaxy and neither does anyone else unless they are gullible, naive and bereft of even a rudimentary grasp of basic mathematics.

There are 3 recordings of this. The 1st appears on our formative project We Are Your Gods, recorded in 1997. The 2nd we completed in 2015 for the album Fast Clean Cheap. It's the track that closes the album. We recorded it again in 2016 in a radically different arrangement for the album School Playground, again as the final track on Disc 1. Disc 2 contains 2 of my avant garde classical works performed by the Japan Schools Orchestra.

Like a photograph fading into sepia images of yesterday,
capricious fragments scatter my life – a history of decay.

Who will recall the nights of valour, of waving flags,
vainglorious rain soaked days reduced to tattered rags?

Who will write down the words I said?
Will I be remembered when I’m dead?

Like a rusting railway track no longer used except by weeds,
who will remain to write a list of all my glorious deeds?

I have so many memories of the races won,
but are they merely faded pictures in the sun?

Who will write down the words I said?
Will I be remembered when I’m dead?

Alice Fairfield, Ruth Foxton, Janet Caxton, Karen Cooper,
Sandra Benson, Andrew Stanton, Lee Perkins, Terry Cashmore,
Billy Harper, Danny Wentworth, Barbara Jackson, Susan Wilkins,
Eric Cooper, Paul Novak, Wayne Gibson, Wayne Johnson.

The pages of my book are withered and torn – the ink has bled,
so of course it seems a shame so much of it was never read.

Who will recall the times I sat and cried alone?
Who will remember all the people I have known?

Who will write down the words I said?
Will I be remembered when I’m dead?

This number sounds as if it is derived from one of my weirder dreams but in fact it originates purely from my imagination which probably gives any psychiatrists reading this more information than I’d prefer to divulge. Do I really want to be a bird? Not so far as I’m aware. To me, it merely makes an intriguing story: a young man wakes up one morning and he knows he’s soon going to be transformed and he is ecstatic about the prospect. Naturally I am obliged to include the actual sounds of a Siskin, Chiffchaff, Nuthatch, Twite, Bullfinch and Magpie in the soundtrack.

I woke up with the Pigeons, tired and yawning.
I walked over your ridge on a new day dawning.
I walked under your bridge on a May day morning.

I climbed a tree and sat among the Siskins.
I perched on the canopy and chattered like a Chiffchaff.
I scuttled down the trunk and nattered like a Nuthatch.

The songs I heard – I understood every word.
I know it’s absurd to imagine I’m a bird
but I must be ready for the transformation.

I scampered down your hill, eager with expectation.
I simply couldn’t keep still, fidgeting with frustration.
I had an hour to kill prior to your presentation.

I hid in a hedge and twittered like a Twite.
I stood on a ledge and babbled like a Bullfinch.
I balanced on the edge and muttered like a Magpie.

The songs I heard – I understood every word.
I know it’s absurd to imagine I’m a bird
but I must be ready for the transformation.

Ever since the 1980s I have occasionally had dreams that feature small objects in complex geometrical shapes, made of a strange, flexible wood that move, slowly and with meticulous precision, over any surface and across any terrain. In the dreams, I know these are ‘my studies’. Sometimes a character in my dream will actually refer to them as such. It may mean nothing, of course; then again, it may mean everything. I decided it was time to acknowledge their presence.

These are my studies. They move rather slowly.
They look as if they’re made of balsa wood.
They slide across each other. They never run or jump.
Sometimes they disappear but never for long.

I see them in the woods and in the potting shed:
a commentary upon everything I do.
Now and then they are so thin, barely able to begin
to interest me in what they represent.

At other moments, in other places,
they offer solace that I gladly accept
and yet I wonder and now I ponder...
will they survive when I cease to exist?

If They Come In The Morning by Angela Davis...Seize The Time by Bobby Seale...Soul On Ice by Eldridge Cleaver...3 books by members of the Black Panther Party I read in 2019. (I first read Soul On Ice in 1998.) You might think after reading these books by brave and heroic people who have suffered genuine hardship and oppression that perhaps I would finally stop writing bleak, grim and relentlessly depressing ballads about my own life...after all, what do I have to moan and whine about in comparison? Well, here’s yet another one. It is an honest expression of how I often feel...self indulgent? Possibly. Truthful? Definitely.

I sit alone, waiting for morning
to start another wasted day.
The sunrise sees me tired and yawning;
my life begins to slip away.
Why am I here? Why do I bother
and does it matter anyway?

Just for the moment I thought I might succeed.
An acknowledgement of my work – that is all I need;
some recognition of my worth, posterity guaranteed,
but then the fantasy fades, replaced by pain
as darkness and the silence returns again.

Paraphrased from a William Burroughs chapter ‘The Algebra Of Need’, the title and text refer to the propensity of humanity to rape and pillage the planet for personal profit and public pride: look at our buildings, our banks and our fast food franchises. Pity about the Amazon rain forest and all that but (shrugs and sighs) you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. These parasites destroy the land from unborn feet and make for our children a wasteland. That it takes a 16 year old Swedish schoolgirl (Greta Thunberg) to issue the lone voice of reason to a cynical and indifferent world in 2019, 50 years after the ecologists warned us against the folly of our actions, presents a savage indictment of our species.

I acknowledge this is not technically one of my more accomplished lyrics nor does the music rank among my best works. When I wrote it, I was simply too angry to exercise that discipline and self control with which I am usually associated. However, rather than wait until I calmed down and risk presenting a piece whose visceral power is neutered by a desire to concentrate on technical finesse, I decided to allow the piece to stand on its own merits, despite its obvious limitations. Angela Davis was a founder member of the Black Panther Party. Note: the lovely illustrations are by Eugene Khutoryansky.

How many men must die...so you can satisfy...the algebra of greed?
How much must you spend...in order to defend...the algebra of greed?
Much merriment and mirth...in the forth of Firth...from Inverness to Perth...
tempers begin to boil...to calculate the toil...against the cost of oil.
Don’t you wonder why...so many people die...so you have what you need?
Don’t you ever tire...of your brutal desire...to breed and breed and breed?
There’s been another birth...how much is it worth? Will it cost the Earth?

I wrote this work originally in the late 1980s for The Apostles but it is one of a brace of works (the others include The Fighters, For Adults Only and The Answer) we either never recorded or (in the instance of The Fighters) mangled it in the studio with a temporary arrangement that satisfied nobody and ought never to have been released.

Unlike the other 3 members of what I refer to as the ‘Apostles Quartet (The Fighters, The Answer, For Adults Only and Look & Learn) this piece is radically different from its originator. The lyric is similar and the music is marginally the same but the tempo is twice as fast and I added a further 11 chords plus a part for 2 saxophones and a two-part vocal harmony.

Any school teachers who hear this piece or read this lyric might be offended. Well, guess what? I really don’t give a damn – how does that grab you?

Teachers burn – look and learn!
Just take a look at all our schools:
children oppressed by vicious fools.
For thirteen years they steal our time
yet go unpunished for their crime.
They try to push us till we crack,
so take up arms and fight them back!
Burn down schools – no more rules.

Neither slave nor master!
Teachers are bullies and nothing more,
it’s what their cowardice is for.
They teach us only to obey,
to worship blindly all they say.
You know it’s courage teachers lack
so take up arms and fight them back!
Burn down schools – no more rules.

Headmaster: run faster!
We’ve been assaulted and abused,
intimidated and confused;
attacks upon our body and mind,
all this in schools is what you find.
Let’s pile their bodies to the sky
and, laughing, watch those cowards die!

Revenge is justified: each teacher must be tried
for crimes against mankind and torture of the mind.
So send them to the showers: vengeance is ours!

We recorded this originally for the 7” EP ‘Richard Dawkins’ issued by BBP in 1997. It was the first release issued under our name UNIT whereas previous projects were released under the moniker Academy 23 as there was a group in Germany called UNIT at that time. I was not involved in 5 or the 6 tracks for that EP so when they murdered The Reptile Kid, I really had no right to complain about the result...but I still did. What a cantankerous old bastard I can be. This is far closer to how it ought to sound. The title is a paraphrase of a character invented by William Burroughs for his novel The Wild Boys. This is the rough mix – the proper version will be on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst.

Our vocal tribute to Paul Novak is already available on Bit Chute so here is the instrumental work. Recorded in 2013 for our album The Colours Of Life. This, like its vocal counterpart, is in 7 throughout because Novak was a difficult character: sullen, surly, taciturn and prone to sudden eruptions of extreme violence. He allowed me to visit him at Bleak House (my name for his home in Medstead, east Hampshire) I think because he felt sorry for me. He was a year younger than I yet infinitely more intelligent. His father was (and hopefully still is) a truly magnificent individual.

This is a traditional Scottish pipe tune (coupled here with another popular bagpipe tune, The Liverpool Hornpipe) given a new lease of life here. I first encountered these pieces on a library LP of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. We resent our folk music being sequestered by military thugs whose job is to protect the royal family so we saw it as our duty to restore our music to its rightful place among the working class people who wrote the tunes originally. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

I wrote this music in 1982 - then added bits to it over the next 3 decades. The lyric I completed circa 2010 as the 3 previous texts used were not satisfactory. This is featured on our 30th album Fast - Clean - Cheap.

For only forty thousand years mankind has lived its hopes and fears;
from the Pleistocene to plasticine we’ve grown –
a fleeting history is all we’ve ever known.

All your religions, all financial deals you’ve tied,
your petty politics and patriotic pride,
are less than atoms in a sky that’s light years wide.

Our nearest galaxy is Messier 31,
one thousand million stars not so unlike our Sun;
it’s the most distant object naked eyes can see,
over two million light years between it and me.

Five thousand million years the Sun has shone each day,
a nuclear reactor 93 million miles away,
oblivious of the predator, indifferent to the prey.

All nature has maintained its resistance
to homosapiens repeated insistence of a purpose behind our existence,
so when I look into the sky I realise there is no reason ‘why’.

I wrote this for The Apostles in 1984. They wrecked it (as usual). We recorded it again for the album Fast Clean Cheap and I consider this the definitive rendition. However, Keilan decided it might sound effective in a hardcore punk idiom. I remain to be convinced although it does possess a frantic, nervous energy that contrasts with the plangent despair of the text. This is featured on our album Der Kunst Ihre Freiheit.

Standing alone at half past ten,
you feel rejected now and then;
outside the station in the pouring rain,
that feeling hits you once again.
Nobody knows you. Nobody knows you are alive.

You squat in Kings Cross, a razor in your hand,
for your parents refuse to understand.
Your face is bleeding, your eyes are full of tears;
confronted by your hopes and fears.
Nobody knows you. Nobody knows you are alive.

Your life is limited, there’s little you can do,
as you care what other people think of you.
You’re isolated from people you have known;
is that why you are so alone?
Nobody knows you. Nobody knows you are alive.

Remember your mother and father and how they cried –
does it hurt you when you realise how they lied?
So now it hits you they would not miss you
if alone tonight you died.
Nobody knows you. Nobody knows you are alive.

Here is one of those classic tracks written for The Apostles that they subsequently wrecked. This is how it is supposed to sound. We recorded a keyboard arrangement of this for the album Revenge & Retribution but it failed to satisfy me so we had another attempt at it and here, finally, is the definitive rendition. This is the rough mix – the proper version will be on our album Der Kunst Ihre Freiheit.

You were playing the lads in the football field when mother called.
She wanted to know what it was that made you cry,
as you wept with bitterness hatred and confusion
with the full force of the truth came your reply.

They told me to go back home where I belong
yet still I don't know what I've done wrong.
My home is here within this bitter land
but why they hate me I still don't understand.

2 years later you're employed in a factory making tools.
They drew the picture of a monkey on the toilet door.
You complained to the foreman quoting paragraph 5 in the rules
so they informed you that you weren't required anymore.

They told me to go back home where I belong
yet still I don't know what I've done wrong.
My home is here within this bitter land
but why they hate me I still don't understand.

Outside the Asian centre under the bridge in Finsbury Park,
2 guardians of the white elite considered you their foe.
You fought against their self appointed prejudice.
That’s when you felt the fire of hate begin to glow.

They told me to go back home where I belong
yet still I don't know what I've done wrong.
My home is here within this bitter land
but why they hate me I still don't understand.

Prejudice and slavery made Britain great.
Abolish nations and you demolish hate
but when the backlash comes its harder to decide
which white folks are really on your side.

I wrote this in 1982 with my school pal Paul Novak as the subject. I was hopelessly besotted by him from 1978 to 1980...and beyond. I wonder if he’s ever heard this? Probably not. Anyway, a satisfactory account of this has never been recorded so here it is, albeit 37 years later than we intended. This is the rough mix – the proper version will be on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

I saw the pictures that you drew on the wall;
they’re something else, I can’t believe it at all:
a world of people and creatures in places
where every one of them has fear on their faces.
I think you must be someone of another kind,
either that or you’re out of your mind.
Have you ever even listened to a word I’ve ever said?
Would you care if suddenly I dropped dead?

I’ve never seen you laugh. I’ve never seen you cry.
People are scared of you – don’t you wonder why?
I’ve seen your friends crack up in front of you
but you don’t want them – isn’t that true?
You are so weird, you are so strange.
Why don’t you try being human for a change?
Have you ever even listened to a word I’ve ever said?
Would you care if suddenly I dropped dead?

But still you colour in the pictures that you draw
and yet I wonder what the hell it’s all for.
You say you don’t want any feelings at all,
in fact you’re quite prepared to watch your friends fall.
I don’t believe you care about reality.
I don’t believe you care what happens to me.
Have you ever even listened to a word I’ve ever said?
Would you care if suddenly I dropped dead?

This is another ancient work written for The Apostles (which they subsequently wrecked, as usual). The Chinese format of UNIT attempted to renovate it on Rock In Opposition: Phase 4 in 2007. The result was an improvement (but then it could hardly be any worse) but my poor vocal performance marred the effect. Finally we have managed to record a reasonably proficient rendition of this piece, one of a number of blues orientated works I’ve written over the past 3 decades. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

Lying half dead in a ditch, ‘Please help me.
he cried for help but no-one cared. Please help me.
People turned away because I’m bleeding.
they’d other things to do that day, I’m pleading.
so they ignored him instead I’m crying.
as anyway he’d soon be dead. I’m dying.’

Have you noticed when somebody is run over by a car,
how intoxicated by the vision of morbidity they are?
No-one wants to lift a finger. No-one ever offers aid.
Anyway, I’m sad to say, this is the way people are made.

I’m gonna jump in my car, babe, and drive round to your place.
Yeah, when I jump in my car, darling, and drive round to your place,
I’m gonna knock you down, honey, and run my wheels over your face.

This ballad is respectfully dedicated to every boy and girl who ever spent time in a children’s home, especially if their residence there was caused by the loss of their parents. It was never my intention to write another of my grim, depressing epistles; on the contrary this is a celebration of victory...a hard won, difficult victory, true, but it speaks of a boy and a girl from similar circumstances who triumph over adversity. As the great Japanese writer Yukio Mishima stated in Forbidden Colours: as the water rises, so does the boat.

A boy has been alive for 14 lonely years;
he turns his head away so no-one sees his tears.
They put him in a home with other girls and boys;
sitting alone at night is what he most enjoys.
The Milky Way, resplendent, glitters overhead
and later he watches Antares glowing red.

His drunken stepfather would beat him up for fun,
resentful that the boy was not his real son.
As for the mother, well, I don’t believe she cared;
a rift between them that could never be repaired.
So now he stares at stars so very far away,
determined to survive each bleak and bloody day.

A girl has been alive for 14 lonely years;
she turns her head away so no-one sees her tears.
They put her in a home with other girls and boys;
sitting alone at night is what she most enjoys.
The Milky Way, resplendent, glitters overhead
and later she watches Antares glowing red.

Her drunken stepmother would slap her face for fun,
as she inherited a daughter, not a son.
As for the father, well, I don’t believe he cared;
a rift between them that could never be repaired.
So now she stares at stars so very far away,
determined to survive each bleak and bloody day.

After I wrote the text I swiped from my earlier work In The Name Of Science, because it complements the work. People who claim we are visited by alien entities from elsewhere in the galaxy merely display their ignorance of space research, basic cosmology and elemental mathematics...plus a monumental conceit that asserts there ‘must be’ other life forms in the universe because we exist. The naked ape is (so far) the most intelligent creature created by nature...although when you look at Marxist paper sellers, loony leftie demonstrators or moronic Moslems, this seems difficult to believe.

Life in the galaxy does not exist
except on this spherical rock.
Send out your signals and send out your probes –
the silence continues to mock
every attempt by your white coated drones
to prove that we are not alone.
Why don’t you face it? There’s nobody there
so hide away under a stone.

Why do you search for signals
out in space that do not exist?
Look at the state of you – dashing around
in case there’s a planet you missed.
15 million years ago
you reckon the cosmos began:
billions of stars and billions of galaxies,
try counting them if you can.

That gives plenty of time and space
for intelligent life to evolve
but it’s not there and that is a quandary
you are determined to solve.
Yet after decades of searching in space,
looking at sun after sun,
how many aliens have you detected?
Not a single one!

All life began in the Precambrian
from plankton up to you and I,
swimming and crawling and flying around
in water, the land and the sky.
Here on this planet is where life began
so look at it logically:
anywhere you care to search for the start,
it always ends with the sea.

This number is, like its cousin The Newstead Arch (also on this site), inspired by a dream I had in June 2018. Whereas the former work featured a 14 year old boy, here the protagonist is a 10 year old girl (unless she really is 100 as the lyric suggests) of possibly extra-terrestrial origin. The Whitchurch tunnel still exists – it managed to survive the wanton destruction instigated by Lord Beeching in 1963 in which he ordered the closure of 4,000 railway stations and the removal of 6,000 miles of track, nearly one third of Britain’s rail network. There are no words for the complete contempt I have for this vile aristocrat. The musical inspiration for part of this number is I Should Have Known Better by Wire although I never actually quote from it. Again I sought to utilise 3 bass guitars in a harmonic progression, a practise normally denied to this instrument.

The girl was 10 years old...
or maybe she was a hundred.
A zero does not signify ‘nothing’.
Check your semantic reactions.

I stood in the Whitchurch tunnel
waiting for the rain to stop.
I could hear the sound of laughter
from the track bed on the top.

When I stepped outside the sun shone,
not a single cloud remained.
There before me stood a girl;
no sign that it had ever rained.

She alerted my attention
to a steam train overhead.
While I saw her mouth move I could
not discern a word she said.

(I thought it might be important.)
Steam locomotives fill my head;
they run on my one track mind.

This is one of an extensive series of portraits of people I knew in and around school during the 1970s. Each boy and girl is provided with a vocal ballad and an instrumental depiction of their character. I commenced the series in 2011 shortly after I completed my 1st autobiography (Faded Fragments Of Distant Dreams). Since 2018 we’ve begun to incorporate trios and quartets of bass guitar parts into our numbers since 3 of us are perfectly competent bassists and I refuse to regard the bass guitar as ‘part of the rhythm section’. Such an attitude is an insult to the instrument and its players.

Figueras was a boy of mixed ancestry – half Latin American, half English. I knew him for years, from Anstey Junior School through all my years in Amery Hill School. He attended the same boxing club in Alton used by Terry Cashmore (who is also celebrated in our catalogue of school day tributes – check out Terry Cashmore and A Song For Terry Cashmore if you’re intrigued). The vocal tribute (A Song For Paul Figueras) is also available on this site.

We recorded this initially in 1982 then made a second attempt in 1996, neither of which were satisfactory. Perhaps this time we have managed to record a definitive account of it. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

Welcome to our religion, a corpse on a stick dictates our law,
telling us all to worship lies and murder, blood and gore.
Money will buy salvation but Jesus needs that little bit more.
God laughs when he sees us burn a witch for Jesus!
(With your money we can buy eternal life for which we die.)

We are unworthy sinners, kept alive by a funeral fire;
terrified of living, scared of sex and all desire,
we love death and torture – each of us is a practised liar.
Happy is God who sees us kill a queer for Jesus!
(Our pride and cowardice never ends;
we’ll even take away your friends.)

Ninety thousand women put to death as witches
makes us proud to praise the Pope and all his bloody riches.
Tortured by the Talmud, guilt and fear are all we feel;
captured by the Koran, tormented in a trial by ordeal;
brainwashed by the Bible and a god who isn’t even real.

Burn a witch for Jesus, kill a queer for Jesus,
ruin your life for Jesus. Let us all pray God sees us!

First recorded for the 1996 album Kämpfbereit, this new rendition is how it should have sounded. This is the ‘rough mix’. The proper production can be heard on our album Der Zeit Ihre Kunst, available on our Band Camp site from September 2019.

Weak minded cowards, like peas in a pod,
will one day have to face the fact: there is no God.
There’s never been a heaven or a fiery chariot;
sadly, there wasn’t even Judas Iscariot.
It is logic, not Lucifer, who suffers a fall
the day you obey Luke, Peter and Paul.
Christ was a myth, not a spirit in the sky.
The bible is nothing but a fabricated lie.
Jesus Christ and LSD will not ever set you free.
Remember: christianity preaches fear and slavery.
Why be a brainless, blethering bod?
Face the fact: there is no God.
Why be a cowardly, creeping clod?
Face the fact: there is no God.
Celebrate now, shout ‘heiligetod!’
Rejoice, rejoice, there is no God!

The holy bible is just libel
written by men who lust for power.
The minister, rather sinister,
he locks choirboys in his tower.
The good Pope? Not a hope!
He’s a traitor to all people.
Here’s the Dean; but where’s he been?
Sitting in drag upon his steeple!
The high priest? Not in the least.
A lower life form doesn’t exist.
The pious nun? Pull the other one.
She’s a whore the choirboy kissed.
The local vicar? There’s no-one sicker,
making money from guilt and fear.
The holy trinity has no divinity;
it even hates you if you’re queer.
The holy church? You search,
but all you find are thieves and liars.
Christianity is insanity –
let us cleanse it with our fires!
Remember what the church said it would do
to the last free man on Earth: ‘Aisle altar hymn!’

This is yet another number initially wrecked by The Apostles in 1986. However when UNIT first tried to renovate it, the result was not a success. Perhaps because I considered the music rather old fashioned, I tended to forget about this anthem but finally, in July 2019, I remembered it and now we give it the rousing rendition it so richly deserves.

In a dark alley of a northern city
an angry mob advances with no pity
upon a burning building of authority.
The dispossessed are now in a majority:
you can hear their shouts from all around:
they’ll burn your palaces to the ground!

At the sight of government buildings burning down,
combined with years of suffering under you, they’ve turned around
and now they’ve taken back the means of production from your reign
so that equality, trust and freedom may return again.

They are a mass of seething fury,
elected as your judge and jury.
You stand accused of murder,
vanity and evil crimes against humanity.
They’ll tear you from your seats of power –
your deaths will be their finest hour!

One of our best pop ballads, a lovely tribute to a lovely girl whose musical skills and ability to play the piano while smoking a cigarette and drinking a glass of whisky must make her eligible for canonisation.

Barbara Jackson was a girl with glorious green eyes,
short black hair and beauty that no make-up could disguise.
In music she was always at the top of the class:
there was no examination that she could not pass.
I liked her best of all out of every girl in our year
so isn’t it a shame that I was born a bloody queer?

Barbara – I love you – yes I do!

I made everybody think I fancied her like mad.
I suppose the way I acted was probably rather sad
but I possessed a secret far too wretched to reveal –
a love for certain lads that no boy should ever feel,
yet I was thick and ugly (everybody made that clear),
so perhaps it’s just as well that I was born a bloody queer.

Barbara – I love you – yes I do!

I went on a school trip with Barbara, Susan and the boys;
I suspected pretty soon that they’d engage in carnal joys.
Miss Brown and Mr Jenkins took secret pictures like spies
and the wrist job Barbara gave me took me rather by surprise
but I made damned sure I told them all, to hide my dreaded fear
that one of them might find out I was born a bloody queer.

Barbara – I love you – yes I do!

We perform a tribute to Paul Novak, one of the strangest boys I ever met while in my final 2 years in Amery Hill School (1979-1980). The song is respectfully dedicated to he and his magnificent father. Our instrumental tribute (simply called Paul Novak) is also available on Bit Chute.

Paul Novak was really rather weird;
throughout the school he was shunned and feared.

Girls fancied him, it cannot be denied,
but they avoided him for they were terrified.

He hit me in the chest. He punched me in the face.
The way he treated me was a bloody disgrace.

You could never call him a friendly lad
yet I still fancied him like mad.

His father wrote books nobody ever read
to try to keep the family clothed and fed.

That boy had violence in his head
so you had to be careful what you said.

I tried so hard to be his friend
but it nearly drove me round the bend.

He was an awkward, surly, miserable sod
yet I idolised him like a god.
Yes, I idolised him like a god.

This text is a tribute to the teenage Triad gang from Singapore featured in the film 15 by Royston Tan. The slogans in the middle (read in Cantonese by Zhang Yao Min) are the actual Triad mottos used by the Hup Soon Heng Triad gang.

Hey, Tan, are you still alive? Are you still in Hup Soon Heng?
Are you fearless, brave and lonely, just like you were then?
Do you still see Erick? How’s he been? Do you still hate Vinh?
I tell you honestly it bothers me, the trouble you might be in.

You barely know what you’re living for
on the streets of Singapore.

At the teahouse in Serangoon Central
a brother was beaten up by a gang
so you all took revenge and left a pile
of bodies in Pasir Panjang.
From Bukit Panjang you ruled the streets
all the way to Keong Saik Road
but are blood, pain, death and misery
the fruits of the seeds you sowed?

There’s nothing cool about being poor
on the streets of Singapore.

All the years, your hopes and fears,
so often laughed at by your peers,
a wasted life now ends in tears,
a scream of rage that no-one hears.

A second to err – a life time to pay.
Eternal friends and eternal foes do not exist.
The worlds’ most lethal drug is despair.
We shed only blood, not tears.
The greatest enemy of life is yourself.
The first greatest pain of life is love.
The second greatest pain of life is rage.

Heaven is cheap. Women are cheap. Hell is cheap. Men are cheap.
The sky is cheap. The Earth is cheap. The body is cheap
but the soul is not cheap.

Do you still have all those piercings? Do you still dye your hair?
Have you spoken with your dad at all? Does he even bloody care?
Have you had any more tattoos done?
Did you break some poor girls heart?
I’d like to take away your pain but I wouldn’t know where to start.

They gave you less when you demanded more
on the streets of Singapore.

You, Erick and Armani ran the streets from Johor to Batu Pakat
in your minds or in reality – only you know the truth of that.
You were 15 at the time which means you’d now be 21,
so when you look back over 2 decades,
are you proud of what you’ve done?

You live your lives beyond the law
on the streets of Singapore.

All the years, your hopes and fears,
so often laughed at by your peers,
a wasted life now ends in tears,
a scream of rage that no-one hears.

Chun and Chen, you’ll go insane,
your lives become a shabby mess again and again.
Chun and Chen, not yet men,
one day you may achieve success but God knows when.
Vinh Soh, friend and foe,
I think you’ve been to places I don’t ever want to go.
Shaun Tan, I tell you, man,
there have been boys like you since time began.
Melvin Lee, in you I see
a bloody marriage of beauty and brutality.
Hup Soon Heng!

Nathanael

Two disciples who didn’t have two names? Do you know who they are?

Why study the Apostles?

“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:19-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:45‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭18:15, 18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:46‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Nathan El “gift of God” or “God gives.”

Nathanael was of Galilee
——
... Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.”
‭‭John‬ ‭21:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The Place of Jesus’s First Miracle
—-
“And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:”
‭‭John‬ ‭2:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Nathanael had to have been a student of Scripture because he was aware of the Messiah coming.

The first action of Philip was to find Nathanael! He had to put forth some effort! And then when Philip spoke, he spoke from the Word of God and he pointed to Jesus Christ!

Nathanael Was Prejudice and a Skeptic But Philip Didn’t Argue
——-
“And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:46‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus said come and see me, not come and see the Christians.

“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
‭‭John‬ ‭7:37‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus Already Knew Him
———-
“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:47‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus said that not only was Nathanael an Israelite physically but he was also one spiritually. He was not a hypocrite like the Pharisees or scribes.

Whether he was a hypocrite or not, all men need Christ.

He was an ignorant man. He knew of the Messiah but he didn’t know that Jesus had come until Philip told him.

“Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭9:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus knows who you are; he knows all the questions in your mind; he knows your heart whether you are saved or not saved. If you really want to know if there is a Saviour that can save your soul:

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

One day it will be too late.
—-
“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:”
‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭55:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Nathanael was looking for the Messiah, but perhaps from Bethlehem, the city of David, or perhaps Jerusalem or some other place given in prophecy.

Nathanael Confesses Christ
——-
“Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:49‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Philip Called Jesus Son of Joseph
—-
“Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:45‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Some people find Christ right away, others may take years.

Some People Stumble Upon Jesus, Some Seek Jesus But the Reward is the Same
———
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13:44-46‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Rabbi Means Master
——-
“Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Clean Cut; Episode 177
What's the usual purpose of a creed? What kinds of doctrines are described by this creed? What beliefs are implied by this creed?
All well-reasoned comments welcome.

If you're new to the series, I hope you'll check out the previous episodes, as they contain a lot of deductions, which I'll be building on.

Mark 2 - Levi/Matthew

Levi Had a House
————————
“And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:14-15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭5:27-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭9:9-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Happened After Palsy Miracle
———
“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭9:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Publicans Were Not Allowed Near Temple or Synagogue
—————-
“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Capernaum a Small Area
————

“And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭8:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Matthew Was Humble
——-
Matthew had the experience with handling money so why wasn’t he the treasurer?

“This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.”
‭‭John‬ ‭12:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.”
‭‭John‬ ‭13:29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Purpose
————
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭19:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Follow
——
If you read Luke 9:62 in its entire context, it speaks of people who said that they would follow Jesus only after they took care of some personal matters first (Luke 9:59-61). Jesus said that if you're to be a part of His ministry you must look ahead and not dwell upon the matters of this world. This is what Matthew did in Matthew‬ ‭9:9-10‬. Jesus wants us to seek Him first and then all other things shall be taken care of (Matthew 6:33).
