"Simba" - 5x7” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Some friends commissioned this pet portrait for their niece when her beloved cat, Simba, died recently. They said she trained him to take walks with her and caused quite a stir around their neighborhood. He must have been a very special cat and I hope I captured not just his likeness, but his spirit in this painting.

"Lurking" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Someone asked me to paint a whale underwater but I haven’t been able to find a good reference image yet. Instead I found this shark and was instantly captured by the eerie drama of the scene. The whole painting went really smoothly and someday I’d like to do a similar piece with a hammerhead shark.

"Snow Day" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

It’s been a while since I’ve done any animal paintings, so I wanted to try another. This piece was inspired by all the snow we’ve had here recently. At first, I created a more detailed background, but when it detracted from the horse’s form and movement, I simplified it. This inspired me to also simplify the color palette and give the illusion that the horse was a part of the snow itself. I really enjoyed accentuating that illusion and may try a similar piece with water in the future.

"Starlight Star Bright" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This piece was a bit of an experiment. I wanted to try painting a night sky and had fun creating the stars with a splatter technique but the foreground trees felt rather flat when I was finished. I thought adding some fire would give them more interest and almost added an alien tripod in the background, but in the end settled for a simple full moon.

"First Snow" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I was originally going to do this as a Christmas painting and tried adding ornaments and light strands to the little tree, but in the end it just didn’t fit with the piece as a whole. Instead, I created a more dramatic sense of lighting to give the scene a touch of magic. This is definitely not my favorite piece, but the background trees were enjoyable and I will probably revisit the subject in the future.

"Derbyshire Dawn" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint another broader landscape like “Once Upon a November” and chose this scene because of the dramatic lighting. The unusual perspective provided a nice challenge and I enjoyed using various tones to achieve a sense of distance. I loved the mysterious quality of this scene and thought it would be an apt way to start off the new year. The orange light in the background could be a beautiful sunset or a raging forest fire; this is exactly how 2021 feels to me—will it end in prosperity or disaster? "Tropical" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I’ve been itching to paint another beach scene and figured now was a great time as we head toward snowy weather. This has to be one of my favorite paintings ever! The whole thing went incredibly smoothly and I had a lot of fun with the beach and shoreline. Sara tells me it looks like a photograph and perhaps it does, but the nice thing about painting is I can change the subject however I want it to be. In this case, the beach in the original photo was filled with people…too bad I can’t paint away crowds like that in real life!

Canvas, what size? Too big for a pocket and too small for a stadium.
You cut it in the middle, why such violence? But it was repaired with stitches.
Dripping? What for? Why do you dirt your paintings?
Why don't you paint other things? Something more "real"?
Why do you do all this?

Why the sky, the earth and all that exists?
Do our questions satisfy what we want to hear or do we use questions to open doors, the connection, to our inner truth, the inexplicable, the universe?

What we perceive is the reflection of what we are right now.

"Once Upon a November" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

The first place Sara ever took me to was Goat Hill Overlook in New Jersey. It was actually a bit chilly, but we had some nice hot stew and a blanket to keep us warm. Two years later and we’re getting married so I wanted to paint this piece to commemorate our first meeting. The whole painting went pretty smoothly. The color relationships were fun to play with, although the atmosphere in the distance took a bit of reworking. Overall, I think it captures the romantic mood of that day.

I wanted to paint another sunset piece that contrasted well with “Light in the Forest” and chose this scene because of the dramatic lighting and colorful clouds. After doing so many recognizable landmarks, I wanted to go back to a general forest scene. This image inspired me with the bright, yellow sunlight casting such dark shadows across the foreground. That contrast of light and dark made this piece somewhat challenging, but I enjoyed playing with the purples in the reflected light. "Fall at Loux Bridge" - 5x7” - Acrylic on Canvas -

One of the most picturesque bridges in Bucks County, Loux Bridge was built in 1874 by David Sutton. Bucks was once home to over 50 covered bridges but now only 12 remain. This was by far my favorite to paint, with its quaint white walls and quiet creek. I enjoyed the challenge of capturing its charm!

"Trick or Treat" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Happy Halloween! To celebrate this spooky holiday, I thought it would be cool to paint a jack-o-lantern. The glow effect in the mouth and eyes was a lot of fun to create, but the lettering was a bit of a pain. Next year I think I’ll just paint some Halloween candy! :P

"Black Magic" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This piece was a lot of fun and went extremely quickly. The only thing I had to watch out for was making the fur look too bright against the dark background. I really enjoyed adding the purple mist and orange eyes, and look forward to doing more spooky paintings next year!

Dream Pond (Big Band) —- If you live to learn and see. Come to the pond in the evening. Take the trail that the sun’s last shinin’ on! Not all that long ago I had to play each instrument into the sequencer one at a time. Don’t even mention the drums. Mind numbing, it was. Modern technology has afforded me the ability to control the entire band with my left hand. Add to that canned intros and endings and y’all gots an on the fly arranger. I have the left hand set to trigger chord changes when a minimum of three keys are pressed at once. Under Style Play: Jazz - P2 - Bigger Band Right Hand: Smooth Band Intro = 2 Vari = 2 End = 1 Now don’t that make this look utterly simple!?! You may notice my left hand tends to re-strike a chord at times when it seems unnecessary. It is, unnecessary! Recorded by Mark & KORG Pa4X. Pa4X at the Pond.

"Ablaze" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is the companion piece to “Crackle.” In that painting, I wanted to highlight the warmth and ambiance that a roaring fire can provide, but with this piece I wanted to showcase the darker side of fire. It was difficult getting the smoke right between the trees, but I hope I managed to portray the danger and threat inherent in such a scene.

"Crackle" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After how well the fire dragon in “Time to Go” turned out, I thought it would be cool to hone my skills with some more fire paintings. I chose this scene because of the great contrast of the roaring, orange blaze against the quiet, blue twilight. This whole painting went really smoothly, but the most enjoyable part was adding the small crackling sparks around the fire.

"The Myrtle Tree" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is the companion piece to “Old Train Car,” another commission by a client. The most difficult part of this painting was dividing the foreground from the background while still creating a sense of depth. That made this one of my most interesting paintings to date and gave me more confidence to experiment with similar scenes in the future.

This is the companion piece to “Into the Light.” I loved the mysterious feeling in this scene and the way the bird was framed so perfectly by the foreground leaves and misty sunlight. "Into the Light" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint another springtime scene and loved the way the light illuminated this forested path. I really had fun playing with the different color relationships, creating contrast between the foreground and background. The sun rays gave this piece a somewhat mystical feeling, but it still felt like it needed something more. I added the heron to give it that last touch of magic that it was missing.

The image that inspired this painting was actually just a snowy forest path at sunset. I wanted to add a bit more interest and thought about how winter and Christmas are slowly drawing nearer. "Autumn Snow" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint another snow scene, but this time with some more color. I chose this image because of the orange tree in the foreground and the contrast it created with the snow. The soft light in the back trees was somewhat difficult to achieve, but I thought it added a nice touch of mystery to this piece. I accentuated the highlights in the snow to draw the viewer’s eye from that orange tree to the soft light, to make them wonder where that path may lead to.

"Alight" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I thought it was time I tried painting some insects and wanted to try a scorpion, but my fiancée, Sara, is highly adverse to almost all forms of creepy crawlies. She told me she’d only tolerate paintings of three types: ladybugs, butterflies, and dragonflies. Since she’s not only my editor and videographer, but also my photographer, I knew if I went ahead with the scorpion, it would probably never see the light of day! In fact, I believe Sara would have probably knifed that painting when I wasn’t looking, and then blamed it on its “looking too realistic.” In the end, after finishing this piece, I realized I really don’t enjoy painting insects, which I’m sure is a great relief to Sara!

After trying some road and mountain paintings, I really wanted to get back to my favorite subject: forests. This scene struck me with its abundant green foliage and tranquil creek. "A River View" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After “Morning Heights” I wanted to paint another mountain scene, but this time from a more distant angle. I really enjoyed adding the light green to give the mountains depth and the pine trees were a nice change from the oaks and maples in my usual paintings. The most difficult part was creating areas of interest in the foreground. I probably should have added a bear hunting trout or salmon, but wanted to move on to another scene.

"Morning Heights" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After painting numerous paths and forests, I wanted to try something different. I thought mountains would be a nice change and chose this scene because of the unique angle and the brilliant orange sunrise. I really enjoyed playing with the colors in this piece—accentuating the blues and purples and contrasting them with the yellow-orange gradients in the sunburst. "After the Storm" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I’ve wanted to paint a storm scene for a while now and chose this image because of the puddles in the foreground. It was actually difficult to find the right tones for those puddles, but once I did, everything came together smoothly. The clouds were probably my favorite part and made this painting one of my most enjoyable to date. I hope it portrays the awe and relief we feel after a storm, when we come face to face with the power of God in nature and our own vulnerability.

Hi everyone,

If you enjoy this video, please subscribe and hit the notification bell as it really helps me out. Leave me a comment down below if you have any feedback or suggestions. I now have a Ko-fi page setup if you'd like to help me buy art supplies https://ko-fi.com/studiolumitar

In this video I'll be painting an A4 sketch I did recently of some succulents. I browsed a bunch of photos on a royalty free photo site and picked out a bunch of varied plants so that I would have a lot of interesting colours to work with. I'm really pleased with how this is turning out so far, and there should be a part 2 video coming up once I complete it.

In this video I discuss what I learned so far from this piece in terms of the bombay inks I'm using, and I also chat about the progress I'm making with watercolour paints. I'm using a set of Mijello Mission Gold watercolour paints, and will likely do a video about them soon once I feel confident enough with them.

Materials used in this video:
Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay Inks, set 1 and 2
Gold Line brush size 8
WHSmith Watercolour Paper 300gsm
Lineart was done with Faber-Castell erasable pencil
Video created with Wondershare Filmora

"Brilliant Path" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is the Delaware Canal towpath near the Thompson Neely house. It’s a beautiful place in every season, but my favorite time is in the fall when the multitude of colors creates a brilliant backdrop to the calm, tranquil water. Those same colors provide a unique challenge in autumn paintings like this one. They make it tricky to get the lighting and shadows just right, but when the whole scene finally comes together it’s a joy to see!

After painting a great predator of the sea, I thought it’d be cool to paint a great predator of the sky. This eagle captured my imagination with his fierce expression and dangerous vibe. "Silent Predator" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

To finish off this summer’s ocean series I wanted to paint another sea creature, but this time from an underwater perspective. I chose this scene because of the way the light filtered through the water and cast patterns on the sand and shark. The shark was actually challenging at first. I repainted it several times but still wasn’t satisfied with it until my fiancée suggested adding some aqua green. She was right! The whole piece came together beautifully after that and I was able to achieve a much better sense of depth.
