#bugout

In this video I am working on finishing our toy hauler / buhout trailer build. We are hoping to have it done in time to load the motorcycles in the back and head to the Florida keys for 2 weeks. We plan on making a pitstop at the 2021 Daytona Bike week. Be sure to follow along as we finish the trailer and head for sunny southern Florida.

This might be the most difficult task facing us all. Letting go of the little minutia of the day-to-day noise that intentionally entraps each of us into keeping our attention, of always having our skin-in-the-game. Is it possible to trust in the flow, to prepare, then let go? Letting go of the desired outcome may allow us to see the perfect outcome for each one of us as individuals. Just as we all began this game at a different place on the game board, all will land on their feet, yet in a different state of being. That is how growth, progress, and divine evolution moves each game piece one step closer to home.

This is a quick little survival tip for you that I learned from my Dad. Look for Ivy on the ground in the woods. Yup! Overgrown homesteads are difficult to see and we found several over the years by just noticing decorative ivy. If we saw Ivy, we started looking around. Why is this a survival tip? We would often find food. Apple trees, leaks, carrots, etc. Food! We also found old foundations, mason jars, and tools all of which could be used in a SHTF situation. Here's a brief video for you. Enjoy!

One of the things I learned growing up was spotting animal paths. Dad would point them out and have us look for them too. They were an alternate route from the main path as well for us. This is a survival skill for two main reasons. Hunting and water. These paths lead somewhere that meets the animal's needs. Water being one of them. They use them often so they are a hunting opportunity as well.

This is another big one! Many people will not make it simply because of this. In this video I teach the stealth principle of Light Discipline in a skit. The plot for this skit is I’m teaching a young teenager I found along the way in an abandoned small home. Night will be coming soon and I need my new friend to understand how we are going to do things and why.

Will you have a camp fire? Will you be using flashlights or a torch? If so, I will be looking for you at night. Your position will be known to me even though I am far away. This is an important topic to discuss and so many “How to survival a SHTF event” videos online don’t mention it.

This video is about how to maneuver your way on foot to a safe location. There’s more to traveling on foot than just being quiet. This is not all inclusive as I don’t like long videos and neither do you but I highlight here some main techniques and demonstrate the S.L.L.S. rule. I remind folks how to travel across fields, train track, and go over obstacles. Remember the video about how to hide? Moving out in the open can be caught in the corner of someone eye. It’s all about being aware of your surroundings, moving deliberately, and not drawing attention to yourself.

I could go on about this topic all day so don’t be surprised if I post more on this in the future. Thanks for watching!

The one things that drives me nuts is that buzzing sound of mosquitoes. Absolutely drives me crazy! Anyway, mosquitoes carry a variety of diseases here in the United States these days. Some of these can endanger your life like encephalitis due to The West Nile Virus. Rare though that complication is, illness from mosquito bites make a very sad survivor not to mention the itching and following infection from scratching. Just as a camper, the itchy bites all over will keep you up at night and just make for a miserable time. There are natural ways to protect yourself from their vampiric bite. In this video, I talk about the options you have while out in the woods to manage your mosquito burden. You need options other than herbs which are not always available like you will see here. There will always be dirt in the woods. Dirt +Water = Mud.

There is one critical and potentially fatal mistake in hiding in my opinion. It’s a mistake every one of you have seen in movies. There are so many reasons why you should never use movies and television shows as life examples of anything. This is definitely one of those reasons. Can you guess what this common mistake is? Watch this video and find out.

I also demonstrate how to hide in the woods. I could film hours worth of info on this topic so this is not all inclusive. I will more than likely so several videos over time on this topic. I believe avoidance of conflict is critical in surviving a SHTF situation so I would like to spend time on that which includes hiding effectively and quickly.

In this video, I talk about how I think one would and should behave in a Bug Out situation. I share with you what’s in my mind and what I think are important things to consider. The ladies out there might not like it, but I just call it the way I see it. There’s no politics in a real life emergency where every move you make can cost you your life. I give several points to think about, ponder, and use to work on your mental and emotional preparedness. It’s a discussion that I think needs to be had. As I have said many times before, there’s so much more to survival than having gear and supplies.

There are many ways to hang your food up away from hungry animals, especially bears. The method I like best is the easiest method of course. I think The Pacific Crest Trail, PCT for short, Method is the easiest. Especially if one is alone. In this video, I show you how to do this giving you options when you’re camping or for SHTF. Just an update regarding my thought about my channel. I am learning new things with the editing software all the time! This improves the visual quality as I use either my laptop or an old digital camera. Lots of digital noise in the footage and poor lighting. I am learning over time and expect that to continue so I can bring you a better finished product.

In this update I talk about the direction I see myself going. I talk about my goals for this channel at this point and what I am planning. I give a relaxed chat of my thoughts and chuckle over some things from my childhood with Dad. Some project take more “segments” to film than others. Some are bigger projects than others and some just need me to find the right location to film. I still have many things to share with you. I just really want folks to see our natural habitat the way I do. Everything we need is right there. I want you to be able to use these natural resources if you need to for yourself and your family. I also want you to be aware of principles that can help you along the way. I find much value in the lessons I’ve learned and I bet you will too.

In this video, Squirrel Bait introduces you to her survival prop and decoy. Props and decoys are important in a shtf situation. An abandoned child will make people stop and investigate. A hysterical or grieving Mom can be a handy part to play to invoke sympathy or create a distraction. Naturally I come up with this one!

In this video, Dad and I stumbled across an interesting tree we rarely see. I bet most of you have never heard of it. Dad forgot about being camera shy as he talked about this tree and gave me a quick lesson about compound leaves.

According to The University of Kentucky, the reason for its name is………..

“The seeds of Kentucky coffee tree were used by early settlers as a substitute for coffee. However, caution must be taken because the seeds and pods are poisonous. They contain the alkaloid cystisine that can be dangerous. Cystisine is thought to be neutralized in the roasting process. Cattle have died after drinking from pools of water containing fallen seeds and leaves from Kentucky coffee tree.”

The beans were roasted then ground up for a noncaffeinated bitter coffee substitute. Question: how to know the beans are roasted enough? Probably a good idea to just leave it alone and find some chicory root to roast and grind up instead. Risk versus benefit.

However, Dad says the pods were used in ponds to kill/stun fish. Now we’re talking! Cooking the fish will neutralize the toxin. My mind immediately went into motion with all the different ways to create fish pools in a stream. It’s an interesting tree and bonding time with my father. A survival resource even if we can’t eat or drink from the tree itself.

As you know, your Bug Out Bag is your lifeline. A friend of mine asked me why I chose the bag I did. I thought this would make a great video. There are already tons of info out there on bag options and factors to consider. In this video, I tell you about the bag I chose and why I chose it. My needs, abilities and expectations may be different from yours so I am not saying do what I do. I did think, however, my reasons may point out some practical features to be considered. I have tested this bag and was thrilled with the results. It's very manageable in rough terrain, crossing creeks and rivers, and hours of hiking in the Adirondacks. It's like it was made just for me. Score!

Bugging out is not camping or long distance hiking. You will be constantly on the move, careful to avoid as many people as possible, until you reach your destination. There will be a lot of running, ducking, hiding, lack of sleep and just trying to remain unnoticed in general. Your pack feels heavier by the hour.

Cooking will not be an option most of the time because a fire will give you away. Dakota holes take time and you are on the run. Food odor will lead hungry people and animals right to you even if you’re not cooking. A packet of tuna for example. Light weight but what an odor, right? I see many people online talking about this as a great item to pack along with dried instant meals. What about the smelly package? Trash should be buried as to not reveal your activity. Someone will come along behind you and track you because you clearly have supplies. No time to stop and bury trash on the run.

I like ziplock bags. I can use them later in a variety of ways and my staple bugging food is oatmeal. Very lightweight, no odor, and I can soak some in a container in my pocket or pack and eat it on the go. No cooking needed and no odor cold. It will get me by as I snack from the wild until I get to where I’m going. I have other light weight low odor items as well but I can haul A LOT of oatmeal without getting too weighed down. This way I will have food left as I get my new home established.

Remember……weight and odor when you choose your bugging out food. You have a better chance of reaching your destination.

When is it time to leave? What happens if you wait too late? What if you and your loved ones are not in agreement?

Have you discussed your thresholds with your family? That is, what does it take for you to pack up and go? I recommend you have these discussions with your family and/or group. Unless you live alone, being a unified front is critical. There are different types of Bug Outs. Which option is appropriate and when? Arguing before and during an evacuation can lead to dire consequences. Discussions such as these are part of preparedness. My husband and I engage in these scenario discussions whenever there is a new variable to consider.

I start off this video with one of my little skits to illustrate and, well, have a little fun. Enjoy!

Thanks for watching!

I always carry my walking stick with me when I go out in the woods. Every time! No matter what I plan to do out there or how far from the car I plan to go or what kind of terrain I expect. Why? Because I find my walking stick the handiest tool I carry with me.

In this video, I tell you what I use and show you all the different ways you can use a walking stick. Can you think of any more? A tarp pole perhaps.
