Shallit Lecture given at BYU on March 17, 2008. The Celts living in the middle of Europe were the fearsome opponents of the Greeks and Romans and in c. 390 B.C. they actually besieged Rome. The classical writers have much to say about their warlike activities but where did they come from? Until recently it used to be thought that they emerged in Eastern France and Southern Germany and spread westwards to Spain, Brittany, Britain and Ireland taking their distinctive language with them which survives today as Breton, Welsh, Gaelic and Irish. But recent work is suggesting that the Celtic language may have developed in the Atlantic zone of Europe at a very early date, and DNA studies offer some support to this. So who were the Celts? We will explore the evidence and try to offer an answer.

I address the question of King Arthur, whom I argue is more important as a literary and legendary figure than as a historical one, then I address the question of Britain and the Anglo-Saxon invasions of the 5th century and argue that they cannot have been peaceful and that recent studies have not properly distinguished the DNA of Anglo-Saxons from that of Brythonic Celts. Finally I return to the figure of Arthur as a returning hero, and stress the importance of this perennial archetype as a esoteric representation of a spiritual awakening of the people.

To clarify, what I do not say clearly in the film: Barbarossa, Charlemagne , King Arthur, King Harold Godwinsson and other European kings whose return from the grave has been prophesied are regional variants of an ancient legendary motif of the perfect king who represents the perfect harmony of earthly power legitimised by transcendent and spiritual principles. This will not be achieved by a king climbing out of his grave, but by a spiritual re-awakening of the European peoples.

CORRECTION: At one point I state that "nobody ever called themselves by that name" (Anglo-Saxon) This is incorrect. I had thought that Anglorum was used more than Anglo-Saxon but I have subsequently learned that there are several ecclesiastical texts in which the English were termed Anglo-Saxon during the Anglo-Saxon period.

In the rolling hills of Ireland's County Tipperary, a labourer harvesting peat from a dried-up bog spots the remnants of a corpse and stops his machine just in time, revealing a headless torso almost perfectly preserved and stained dark brown by the bog. Archaeologists recognize the corpse as one of Europe's rare bog bodies: prehistoric corpses flung into marshes with forensic clues often suggesting execution or human sacrifice. The corpse will eventually be dated to the Bronze Age, over 3,000 years ago.

Many of these were victims of shocking violence, showing evidence of axe blows, hanging, and stab wounds. Like a crime thriller, follow archaeologists and forensic experts in their methodical hunt for clues to the identity and the circumstances of this and other violent deaths of bog body victims.

The last episode examines the emergence, history, meaning and threats to the Celtic identity. Today the struggle to define an identity continues. This final segment is a discussion on the degree to which modern people may view themselves as Celts, with examples of modern Celtic-inspired practices like military discipline and warfare, the Welsh Eisteddfod, modern Irish music and art, and the efforts of the Bretons and Cape Bretoners to preserve their native languages in the face of societal assimilation by their ruling nations.

Some of this episode was filmed in Portmeirion, Wales and makes references to the 1960's series The Prisoner.

In the second episode the program examines the heyday of the Celts, the La Tene era. It was tribal, and women were often the leaders: warriors, bards, druids, artists and craftsmen. The Celts were the first European people north of the Alps to rise from anonymity. This program looks at who the Celts were, where they came from and what made their culture so distinctive.

For 800 years, a proud, vibrant, richly imaginative warrior people swept ruthlessly across Europe. The ancient Greeks called them "Keltoi" and honored them as one of the great barbarian races. Follow their fascinating story from their earliest roots 2,500 years ago through the flowering of their unique culture and their enduring heritage today, enhanced with stunning reconstructions of iron-age villages, dramatizations of major historical events and visits to modern Celtic lands.

Episode 2: Heroes in Defeat
https://www.bitchute.com/video/WPXsyR3OAbUp/

Personal note: A good documentary but it could've been better. It started well in trying to understand who the Celts really were. But then, as the series went on, it morphed into a general history of Britain and Wales. Also, the structure is a bit problematic because I like a chronological order myself, without jumping on and off places and time. Overall is a pretty good documentary though, and you'll definitely learn something. Especially if you know nothing to little about the Celts.

The Celts were the first masters of Europe. Their leaders were men and women of legend like Vercingetorix the Gaul. They had powerful priests called Druids who memorised the secret knowledge of generations.

But it all ended in tragedy. This vibrant culture was wiped out of Europe and the Celts were driven to the Atlantic fringes by the legions of Rome. They became the eternal victims, the romantic underdogs of history. Yet, 2,000 years later, their impact still casts its spell today. But how much is myth and how much is true?

This film investigates what ‘Celtic’ actually means, from the first time the term was used in the 7th century BC to the ‘Celtic Christianity’ of the early Middle Ages. There are also insights into various aspects of ‘Celtic’ life and language taken from interviews with a number of historians.

Anthropologist Prof. Alice Roberts and archaeologist Neil Oliver go in search of the Celts - one of the world's most mysterious ancient people. In Britain and Ireland, we are never far from our Celtic past but in this series Neil and Alice travel much further afield, discovering the origins and beliefs of these Iron Age people in artefacts and human remains right across Europe, from Turkey to Portugal.

What emerges is not a wild people on the western fringes of Europe, but a highly sophisticated tribal culture that influenced vast areas of the ancient world - and even Rome. Rich with vivid drama reconstruction, we recreate this pivotal time and meet some of our most famous ancient leaders - from Queen Boudicca to Julius Caesar - and relive the battles they fought for the heart and soul of Europe. Alice and Neil discover that these key battles between the Celts and the Romans over the best part of 500 years constituted a fight for two very different forms of civilisation - a fight that came to define the world we live in today.

In the first episode, we see the origins of the Celts in the Alps of central Europe and relive the moment of first contact with the Romans in a pitched battle just north of Rome - a battle that the Celts won and that left the imperial city devastated.

The Real Story of Ireland: Part 2 - Michael Tsarion on Resolving Reality Radio - 20/2/19

Resolving Reality
Published on Mar 7, 2019

Welcome to Resolving Reality.

This 10th episode features my first returning guest to Resolving Reality Radio - Irish author and researcher Michael Tsarion.

Michael is a much-respected voice and veteran within the so-called “alternative” research community, and has published many fascinating works including several books about Ireland and ancient Irish history, including “The Irish Origins of Civilisation” volumes 1 and 2.

This is a follow-up interview to “The Real Story of Ireland” - my first talk with Michael on the subjects of Ireland's origins, history, culture and sovereignty..and how Ireland has been transformed progressively from a culturally-unique place, into the typical, westernised, global state we see today.

Visits Michael’s websites Michaeltsarion.com, Irishoriginsofcivlisation.com, and also be sure to check out Unslaved.com, to absorb his many works, collaborations and interviews alongside his partner at the Unslaved website - David Whitehead.

In this interview, we talk about the many factors that have transformed Ireland over the ages, and how consistent trauma and chaos have played a role in keeping the Irish people suppressed.

We also cover Ireland's transformation in a global context, the mechanisms of control and the use of “divide-and-conqueor” tactics, including the engineered Catholic/Protestant divide.

Also mentioned is the connection between Marxist ideology and Irish Nationalism, Christianity and morality in modern Ireland, the new threat of islamo-Communism, and much more.
