Rodas also admitted to a domestic violence offense in Garden Grove. A 37-year-old woman in an "on-again, off-again relationship" with the defendant said he choked her on Aug. 1, 2020, and began issuing a slew of threats on social media and in text messages from Sept. 1-4, according to Garden Grove police.

A Jewish couple from Tennessee has filed a lawsuit against the state’s Department of Children’s Services after a state-funded Christian program denied them foster care services for religious reasons.
According to the lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Elizabeth and Gabriel Rutan-Ram signed up for the foster-parent training class and home-study certification process last January at the Holston United Methodist Home for Children.
On 21 January 2021, the same day the Rutan-Rams were scheduled to begin the foster-parent-training class at Holston, an employee “emailed Ms Rutan-Ram to inform her that Holston would not serve the Rutan-Rams because of the couple’s Jewish faith”.

A Clearwater police officer was the foster parent caring for the 7-month-old who was fatally attacked by a pit bull mix, officials said Saturday.
The city’s public communications director Joelle Castelli confirmed that a detective with the Clearwater Police Department was the licensed foster parent caring for the child who died Friday, but would not comment further.

Police said the child was being watched by the parents of one of her foster parents when she was bitten by a pit bull mix named Lynnie. The Department of Children and Families said there was no history of abuse or neglect involving the family prior to the incident.
The dog was seized by Animal Control and is being held under rabies quarantine for 10 days. It’s unclear if the dog will be euthanized.
The Clearwater Police Department and the Department of Children and Families are investigating.

The man charged with raping a young girl who traveled to Indiana as a 10-year-old for an abortion pleaded guilty to rape Wednesday and was immediately sentenced to life in prison.
Gerson Fuentes, 28, was charged with two felony counts of rape in an indictment filed in Franklin County, Ohio, last year in a case that made national headlines after Roe v. Wade was overturned. Fuentes, a Guatemalan national, confessed to raping the child in an interview with police, according to documents filed in Franklin County Municipal Court.
He was charged with the rape of a minor and was supposed to stand trial in January, but the case was delayed.
Fuentes was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole after 25 years and will have to register as a Tier 3 sex offender.
Prosecutors said the victim’s mother did not object to the plea and agreed to the sentencing recommendation.

Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch said that the court considers Fuentes’ crime among the most serious offenses and that it was “hard pill” for the court to agree to the joint sentencing recommendation, apparently referring to the possibility of parole.
"If that family hadn’t begged me to take this joint recommendation, this would never be happening,” Lynch said.
The child tested positive on a pregnancy test and sought out an abortion, prosecutors confirmed in court Wednesday.
Fuentes was the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother, and the girl was under age 10 at the time of the rape, prosecutors said.
The girl had to travel to a neighboring state to terminate the pregnancy, her physician, Dr. Caitlin Bernard, told The Indianapolis Star last summer. Ohio’s “fetal heartbeat” law, which outlaws abortion, was enacted hours after the Supreme Court overturned abortion protections in a 6-3 ruling in June last year.
The Indiana Medical Licensing Board reprimanded and fined Bernard for speaking publicly about the girl's case in violation of patient privacy laws.
But the board cleared her of more serious allegations she was accused of by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, among them that she failed to report child abuse and that she was unfit to practice medicine. Bernard sent a cease-and-desist letter last year asking Rokita to stop making “false or misleading statements” about her.
Bernard's attorney, Alice Morical, said in a statement in May that Bernard was grateful to be exonerated of such allegations by the board.
"Dr. Bernard bravely stood up for access to compassionate medical care and she is a consummate professional who deserves to care for her patients without reproach," Morical said.
Indiana University Health, where Bernard works as an OB-GYN, investigated the issue last year and determined that she had complied with patient privacy laws.
Indiana has also passed a near-total abortion ban, with exceptions for rape, incest and potentially fatal medical complications, but a judge temporarily blocked it last year.

Justin Sladyk, a former DoorDash employee, pleaded guilty to breaking into a woman's Suffield apartment and sexually assaulting a sleeping teen in East Granby.

HARTFORD — A man who has worked as a food delivery driver admitted in court Wednesday to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl as she slept in her East Granby home and, in an unrelated case, breaking into a Suffield woman's apartment in a span of a month in 2021.
Justin L. Sladyk, now 22, who has listed an address on Hatchet Hill Road in East Granby, pleaded guilty in state Superior Court in Hartford to first-degree burglary and fourth-degree sexual assault in the separate cases as part of a plea bargain.
Under the agreement, Sladyk could receive up to eight years in prison. But his lawyer, Douglas D. Rudolph, will have a right to argue for a shorter prison term at Sladyk's sentencing, scheduled for Oct. 18.
The plea bargain could allow a sentence without immediate prison time. But Judge David P. Gold told Sladyk during Wednesday's hearing that he is "likely to be sentenced to a term in prison."
Whatever sentence Sladyk receives probably will include five years of probation, with the possibility of 12 or more additional years behind bars if he violates release conditions.
The police investigations of Sladyk began Aug. 30, 2021, when residents of the Suffield apartment reported the break-in.
One of the residents told police the intruder might be a DoorDash employee who had delivered food to her several weeks earlier and produced an emailed receipt that included the driver's first name, Justin, according to a report by Suffield police Detective Shawn St. John. Police contacted DoorDash and learned the driver's full name, address and telephone number, the detective noted in the report.
DoorDash did not immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment.

Sladyk later told officers he had been at a friend's house in Winsted, drinking beer and smoking marijuana, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. the date of the break-in when he decided to return to Suffield, the detective said in the report.
When he arrived back in the area, Sladyk said, he wanted to talk to a resident of the apartment about a message she allegedly posted on Facebook about a DoorDash driver coming back to her apartment after a delivery and trying to "shoot his shot" with her, the detective reported. St. John explained that the expression refers to an attempt to get her contact information.
Sladyk acknowledged he knew no one would be up at 3:30 a.m. and said he entered the apartment by opening a window and unlatching a security chain, the detective said in the report. Sladyk said he walked upstairs and opened a bedroom door by the light of his cellphone flashlight, according to the detective's report. Sladyk said he found the woman standing in front of him, and she tried to spray him with something, the report stated. He pushed her to the floor and fled, the detective said in the report.
During the investigation, Suffield police obtained a search warrant for Sladyk's cellphone and found a video of him apparently sexually assaulting a sleeping woman at 4:43 a.m. July 13, 2021, according to a report by state Trooper First Class Andrew J. Crook.
In a subsequent exchange of text messages with the girl's father, Sladyk said, "I wasn't fully there after having drinks," the trooper said in the report. But Sladyk added, "I wasn't up to much of anything" and later denied to police that he knew anything about the video, according to the trooper's report.
The girl and her parents decided at first not to report the incident to police because they lacked corroborative evidence, but she decided to press charges after learning of the video, the trooper said.
