It's the 35th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros.! As such, I figured I'd prepare a VRC6 remix of what's probably the most famous video game theme of all time! I'm honestly surprised it took me this long to get around to this theme. While it's primarily based on the original, I incorporated elements of the Super Mario All-Stars and Vs. Super Mario Bros. variants. Hope you enjoy!

Wednesday was the 1st anniversary release of Touhou Kikeijuu ~ Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, so to celebrate I did a cover of the final boss theme from that game. Nothing really interesting to say about this cover, though; I just wanted to get the full name of the game in the description thanks to title character limits...

Sanae Kochiya's theme is probably my favorite boss theme from this game. It's not my absolute favorite song from Mountain of Faith, but it's incredibly catchy enough to get stuck in my head. A hard-rock style song like this would make for a really good PC-98 remix, so I decided to try my hand at arranging this song!

It's a little overdue, but it's finally here! Earlier this year, I reached 1000 subscribers on YouTube! I was trying to think of what to do to celebrate, but then I remembered I had a project on standby from last year. The plan was to arrange all of the songs found in Ninja Gaiden's cutscenes in VRC6. I think I only got three songs in before the project was put on hold. Since I reached 1000 subscribers on YouTube, I decided to revisit this project in full.

Of course I underestimated just how many cutscenes Ninja Gaiden had. I've decided to work in any song that made it into a cutscene, but that also includes songs that appear in stages or bosses as well, with a grand total of 22 songs. Not counting those, I think it's still about 17 songs. Either way, I ended up with a lot more material to work with than I anticipated. That being said, I really enjoyed working on this, and I hope this was worth it to you all!

I've been playing this game a lot since I last made a Tale of Phantasia arrange, and I honestly am liking it more than I expected going in. I think the second act is where things start picking up...but also where some of my gripes start appearing. In any case, this song ended up getting stuck in my head thanks to this, and I figured I'd try to arrange it in the Game Boy sound format.

I was playing through Mario Golf GB the other day, and I was reminded of how good the music is in this game! Of course, I was also reminded fairly quickly why I don't usually play golf games. I think I can chalk it up to me being bad at golf and the AI taking notice of it and playing better to rub salt in the wound. It's not uncommon for me to play pretty well in the first half, but choke in the second half. Either way, I think the game's pretty good, and the music got stuck in my head so I decided to arrange one of the songs in VRC6.

I haven't been doing very many Touhou arrangements that aren't from the PC-98 games, so for a change of pace I decided to make a remix from a more recent Touhou game. It was tricky deciding between this and and "At the End of Spring" from UFO, but I ultimately went with this because I recently put Mountain of Faith on my to-do list to 1cc this year. Hmmm, perhaps I should've saved this for fall instead?

I've started a playthrough of Chrono Trigger this month as part of my Game Clearing goal, so I figured it'd be fun to make an arrange of Secret of the Forest. This is a really good song for one of the first areas of the game, and it helps set the tone for this game nicely. It also admittedly got stuck in my head a while back, so that's partially why I went with this song. I went with a triangle lead because I think it worked better for this song.

Finally it’s done. I thought I could just quickly cover this simple song and draw some slutty anime shit and get it out on April 1st as well, but here we are, more than two months later. Hopefully, it has been worth the weight. As you might have noticed, I’m the Link-Riolu of the Past. But if you followed me on Twitter or Discord (or read my description novels and paid attention to easter eggs in fideos), you already know that I changed my name. There will be a novel about it on my website soon (hopefully), here is a very short Twitter quote:

My quest for the Holy Name has not led me to love at first sight but I’m committing to the best one now. I hope I can get used to this new name, which is mine, which belongs to me, which I possess the ownership of, which I conceived but which is of course already taken.

This fideo is quite different from my other 8-bit stuff but I hope it’s still enjoyable. Either way, the next one will be a "proper" one again (probably a Mystery Dungeon), so don’t freak out, as Jeff would say. But it’s not the only thing that’s finally done, as you might have noticed as well.

Get a leg up, will ya?

DL Folder: https://mega.nz/folder/tt0iCYrS#KuT4_p7mqmiPIsTeJOe75g

I'll be honest with you: I was *this* close to not posting a video on Friday. See, I knew if I was gonna post anything on Friday, it would be a Xenoblade arrange because of the release of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition today. The initial plan was to make one based off of a certain late-game song that I noticed had a few similarities with another late-game song in Chrono Trigger, complete with Chrono Trigger instruments. However, by the time I was able to get working on it, I was cutting it too close for my liking. Since it's technically a spoiler(?) I didn't feel it was worth the risk at this time. I then decided to instead try doing an arrange of Gaur Plain, and at first things were going smoothly. However, I found out that due to the way AddmusicK works I couldn't add many large custom samples or make the song too long, or it would go over the RAM limit and echo buffer. Since Gaur Plain is normally four minutes long before looping, you can see why that might be an issue. I then decided I might try and make it in Famitracker, but when I started I was hating the results. Eventually, I decided to just accept defeat and arrange a shorter loop of Gaur Plain.

I'm glad I had this wake-up call, as I'll try and be more considerate when making SNES remixes down the line. However, since this is around the time that I usually take a break, there won't be any videos until around June 12th. I'll try and use this time to work on a buffer, including finally working on my 1000 subscriber special. Oh, and if any of you are playing Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition today, please enjoy!

This was a request from Boreworm Boreworm, and they actually gave me a bit of leeway with this one! They specifically requested that I do another Gradius cover, not any specific song, so I decided to go for Tabidachi + Burning Heat. There was actually another Gradius request from another user, but I'm making that its own video down the line instead of lumping the two requests together. Burning Heat actually has two separate pitches depending on the version, so I've included both versions. I went with the Famicom version for this video.

I wanted to do something for 'Mer-May' this year, and seeing as I'm not an artist by trade I figured doing a remix of something related to mermaids might be the way to go. Since I heard the NES version of 'The Little Mermaid' was pretty good I went with that. As you might've already seen this wasn't my only contribution to 'Mer-May', but two's better than one!

Panel de Pon *finally* got announced for a Western release next week via the SNES Online app, meaning Lip and her fairy friends can finally come over to the west! As such, I decided to celebrate by arranging another song from Panel de Pon on short notice. I went with Neris' theme mostly because of Mer-May, even though I have another Mer-May remix lined up for next week. ...does Neris count as a mermaid, even though she's a fairy?

This was a request from Saul Guzman, though I decided to make this remix in 0cc-Famitracker for once. From what I can tell, Journey to Silius does not have any 0cc-Famitracker remixes that use the Sunsoft 5B chip. Naturally, I felt obliged to fix that. I might do more Sunsoft 5B covers of Sunsoft games later on, but probably not anytime soon since they're a bit more annoying to work with compared to the likes of VRC6. I did have a lot of fun working on this, however!

DL Folder: https://mega.nz/folder/ok9CmALA#kfAGnAkrHsk58dxH5RHWMw

Ms. Pac-Man is one of my all-time favorite arcade games, and one of the first games that got me into gaming as a kid! It's the kind of evergreen game that every time I see an arcade machine of it I'm always tempted to play it just for old time's sake. As it happens, I've been meaning to do a medley of Ms. Pac-Man in the vein of Yuzo Koshiro's arrangement of Pac-Man for Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS for over a year now, but I either didn't have the time for it before or had trouble making the instruments work within the N163 expansion chip. That's no longer an issue, so please enjoy this medley!

Honestly, after remixing 'Selene's Light' I'd wanted to remix 'Witching Dream' as well to have a matching pair of Stage 1 themes. I don't know why I held off, however; it might've had something to do with me making too many SNES Touhou arranges in a row. Either way, I do still enjoy 'Witching Dream'!

Apologies if I sound like I'm gushing a bit more than usual, but there's a bit of context to today's video. I decided to play through Katawa Shoujo at the start of the year, thinking it'd be a nice cooldown game for Saturday. It wound up being one of my favorite games that I played this year, if not one of my favorite games ever. I don't know how the devs did it, but nearly every single character was likable (and those I didn't like, they gave me very good reasons not to), every single route ended up being great stories in their own right, and the game even provided some quality of life features that if they're not standard, they should be (though admittedly I don't play VNs that often). Accentuating all of this was the background music, which perfectly captured the mood in every case with such standout songs as "Shadow of the Truth", "Nocturne", "Parity", "Out of the Loop"- really, just the entire soundtrack is golden. I knew I'd eventually have the urge to do something from this game, so I went for "Painful History".

"Painful History" ended up being one of my two favorites from the soundtrack by the end of the game, probably because its a good character theme for Hinako Ikezawa and fits the melancholy mood of her route so well. I do think Hinako is a great character for a variety of reasons (her affinity for games like chess and pool, for one), though she's admittedly not my favorite character. I dunno if that says more about Hinako or more about how the game's writing is so strong that Hinako's *only* 'a great character'. I'm hesitant to delve deep into what I mean out of not wanting to spoil the game, so I'll leave it at that.

Star Fox 64 was one of my favorite games that I missed out on in the N64 era (my first exposure to the game was through Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Masterpieces mode, of all places), and it's one that I think aged very well. Of course, I was extremely saddened to hear that Rick May, Peppy Hare's original English VA, passed away earlier this month. As a sort of tribute, I blazed through Star Fox 64's good ending for the first time in years and eventually did a Famitracker cover of its main theme. If you have not played Star Fox 64, I highly recommend it!

Today is the 30th anniversary of Fire Emblem, and as such I decided to do a remix of one of the more well known songs from the series! While I don't consider myself a huge fan of Fire Emblem compared to other Nintendo series I do enjoy some of the music. I also enjoy Yuka Tsujiyoko's music in particular, though that's mostly because she composed for two of my favorite games! I went with the Game Boy sound chip this time because I found it strange that there weren't any GB remixes of this song before considering its popularity.

For as early and unpolished as Story of Eastern Wonderland is, I kinda like some of the stages compared to those of later games. They seem to have a more ambient and low-key atmosphere that a lot of Touhou games don't seem to replicate. End of Daylight is probably the best example of that, especially the FM version due to the SSG channel recreating environmental noises for added effect. Inevitably, the song got stuck in my head and I decided to recreate it in Famitracker.

This was a request from Ah'Mani The Music Gamer and Plotagonist 2020, and honestly listening to the song I think it's a really good song that builds up in tension near the end. I recently got around to beating DuckTales Remastered (partially because of its initial delisting), and I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it! The soundtrack for this game (in both versions) was probably the best part, so naturally I went ahead and did an arrange of one of its songs. The plan was to do an arrange from one of the other songs in the game (and this might be a bit controversial, but I kinda prefer a lot of the other songs to the Moon theme), but I've honestly been so behind on maintaining my buffer of songs to post that I don't know if I would've had enough time otherwise.

Also if you're wondering why this went up and got taken down earlier, it's because there was a rendering issue that I didn't catch until immediately AFTER the video went live. Cyberlink PowerDirecter 14 has a weird bug where it sometimes ignores your rendering settings and outputs at a lower bitrate/framerate. It's really annoying and has caused me to have to babysit the program just so it outputs correctly. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

I don't know if I've mentioned this here, but I've actually only ever beaten one Zelda game before. This is in spite of having been around for the N64 era and having played this game back when it was new. What kept happening is that I picked up a Zelda game, played it for up to about the first dungeon, then stopped because there were other games that attract my attention instead. I'm trying to fix that this year, and I figured I'd start with the game that kicked off this 'Zelda curse'. Since I was doing that, I wanted to do a quick arrangement of one of the more well known songs in the game.

Two distinct themes for the 80's arcade beat 'em up, Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja. Both are American patriotic tunes, the Japan version being a remix/variation of the "Star Spangled Banner," while the US version was a variation of "Hail To The Chief." In both versions of the game, you set out to rescue President Ronald Reagan from a band of evil ninjas.

It is April Fool's Day once again, and similar to last year I wanted to arrange a song from a terrible, TERRIBLE video game and make something passable out of it. As it so happens, I'd wanted to see what one of the worst RPGs on the NES would sound like if it were ported to the system with the most classic RPGs. I decided to try using Final Fantasy 6 samples, though admittedly I was going back and forth on whether to use samples from that game or Chrono Trigger.

Before i started gaining experience as a producer and an artist i created a lot of badly produced/thought music. I created five albums, that i'm not really proud of, but those five LPs have some moments or good ideas that are not to be improved or taken anywhere further.
Arcade Warrior is the project I created pretty recently, in 2019 that contains all 30 tracks of chiptune-like experimental music i created something around 2017 and released a year later, under my previous nickname. Second album contains 8 original tracks and two covers - Star Wars "The Imperial March" and "Dragonborn from a famous video game "TES: Skyrim"

Give me back my boat!

DL Folder: https://mega.nz/#F!shsxhaQJ!sN3IkBn4QhQtQKSZmTPaRA

For the uninitiated, KiKi KaiKai is an arcade shmup made by Taito starrting Sayo-chan, the miko of some nondescript shrine who has to fight off mischevious youkai (such as Puka Puka, Kasabe, Ichidou, and the bane of my existence, the Hashiritai) in order to save the Seven Lucky Gods and the boat they're riding on. It got a couple of remakes on the Famicom, the PC-Engine and GBA, as well as a couple of fairly well-known sequels on the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo (you might know of the first sequel as Pocky and Rocky!). I'm mostly doing a remix because the original came out on the Switch as part of Arcade Archives (and I ended up beating it about a week ago, somehow), so if you're in the mood for an arcade-era Japanese-themed shmup, I highly recommend KiKi KaiKai!

...now why does this setting sound familiar?

Frankly I'm a little surprised I never got around to remixing *this* song in my first few years of doing 8-bit covers. I definitely started doing it in Famitracker a couple times, but never had anything concrete that I felt comfortable with uploading. I'm fixing that now partially because I wanted to get it out of the way, but partially because I haven't actually seen any Game Boy covers of Zelda II's soundtrack. I'm sure it exists somewhere, but I was certain that I would've found it by now...

Animal Crossing: Wild World, along with Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, was my first game for my first console, a white DS lite. I played it a lot and have many good memories of it. I remember playing it in bed sometimes and falling asleep while doing so, waking up the next day not only to an empty DS with all progress lost, but to be greeted by Resetti as well. The museum was my favourite place and I loved gathering exhibits. Fossils were the most interesting to me, followed by fish. Insects were alright but I didn’t care about the paintings. These old paintings, that are indeed quite impressive from a technical view, were the only topic in art class at school, so until a couple of years ago I thought I hated art and found it boring. But then, thanks to the interwebs, I realised that there are many other forms of drawing arts and I do actually like some of them a lot. If only I had realised that earlier. The museum’s music is very great and nostalgic as well, my favourite versions are fossils and paintings. Blathers was one of my favourite characters, I always enjoyed talking to him and related to his sleep cycle and sleepiness. The observatory was amazing as well, I was really sad that they removed it in New Leaf. Also, I always thought it would be great to have a flora museum to collect all flowers, trees etc. in one place. The insect area is a little like that, but I would like a proper one. For New Horizons, I wish that they bring back the observatory and add a flora section.

On the Lynx, it was a 2D game that made excellent use of the platforms capabilities, while the version on the Jaguar fell far below expectations as it tried to take Virtua Racer head-on and failed miserably. Don't let that dissuade you from the Lynx version though, which could link up to six units for a multiplayer race.

I initially wanted to do a PC-98 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon cover in lieu of the Rescue Team DX launching today, but the track I had in mind was for a different game in the series (and was very much not coming along well). Instead, I decided to do a Gradius track because I had one of the songs stuck in my head one day.

Also as a heads up, Monday's video will be delayed to Tuesday thanks to a last minute change in plans.

Beach Cave. The very first dungeon. The beginning of an incredible journey. This song makes me especially nostalgic. It reminds me of the first hours spent in a dungeon. Back when the game was new and magical and I explored every floor completely instead of trying to get to the stairs as quickly as possible before I die, starve or run out of PP. And this song, partly because of the nostalgic factor, is one of my favourites from the game.

Figured it was about time for the obligatory Battletoads remix this year, so I went with everyone's *favorite* stage, Turbo Tunnel. While the majority of this remix is based off the NES Turbo Tunnel I also worked in parts of the Turbo Tunnel found in Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, which has quite a few differences in its leads. Also I recorded some footage from Turbo Tunnel off of my NES so you have something to watch while listening!

I've already arranged this song in 2a03 format back in 2018, but looking back I noticed quite a few mistakes with it that I wanted to go back and fix if I ever did another cover of this. Then I decided since I was starting to learn MML last year, I'd do a cover in PMD and port what I've done here to SPC format using ripped F-Zero instruments (which may or may not make sense depending on who you ask). I'm posting the PMD port today because I like the output of this more, but I may post the SNES version later down the line.

Codename Kids Next Door is probably my favorite western cartoon, and I think I decided one day that I wanted to do a quick cover of its title theme. It was a little tricky to arrange it using the 2a03 limitations, but hopefully I got pretty close. I've been curious about the "Tales of" series for a while now, so I decided to start with Tales of Phantasia on the SNES since that has a full vocal opening song, which is pretty impressive by SNES standards. I'm honestly a little surprised at how fun combat is in this game, and that's probably what's keeping me going so far. Of course, good combat is only made better by catchy battle music, and Take Up The Cross is so catchy I knew I just had to try and remix it! I went with the Game Boy style because it's been a while since the last GB cover.

I guess partly because I had to waste a lot of time to research, think about and do something for the two baby tortoises my mum apparently spontaneously bought but that’s a different story. My plan was to spend one week learning web development stuff and the next week making the next fideo. I was listening to music when I was learning and Dragonspiral Tower started playing. Why not cover that next, I thought, it sounds great and rather simple. Then again, I felt guilty for choosing a song that is simpler and shorter. After all, everything I do has to be better than last time.

This cover is based off of an album from Hobby Atelier Carrot Wine called "ROCKGIRL Touhou Ganshoujo", which contains a series of Mega Man-style remixes of the soundtrack to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (and a few extras). This song was also originally based off of "Voile, the Magic Library". I figured it might be a neat challenge to try and recreate one of the songs from it in Famitracker, since I haven't been doing many 2a03 covers lately. I know I'm posting this a little earlier than usual, but I was really in the mood to do another Dragon Quest arrange, especially with having finally beaten Dragon Quest XI S last month, and with today/tomorrow being the 32nd anniversary of Dragon Quest III's Japanese release I figured I'd arrange the battle theme from that game, as it's managed to get stuck in my head lately. Late last year, I mentioned that I found it funny I arranged the Airship theme from the SMB1 style in Mario Maker before arranging the one I actually grew up with. This was actually something I'd wanted to do years earlier, but never could get it to sound how I like it. I decided to finally rectify that this year and start from scratch. It naturally uses the timapni DPCM sound from Super Mario Bros. 3, but most of this cover is based on the Super Mario Galaxy version which I really liked.

This one was actually a request from カレー【音MAD】 from a WHILE ago, but I couldn't get to it at the time since it was made when I wasn't actually accepting requests at that time (something I probably should've given its own update video for). I decided to do it now since I felt a little bad for not having done so. This song apparently has two different keys from different sources (D# for in-game, C# for soundtrack purposes), so as per usual I've included them both depending on what you prefer. I stuck with D# for this video because that's what I'm more used to, though I do actually like both!

Had an urge to do a PC-98 cover of Black Sabbath's Paranoid late last year, at least partially due to reading a certain 4koma from Setz that involved this song. This is the last video I'll be posting for the year (and the decade, apparently). Eastern Dream quickly became one of my favorite songs in Touhou when I first heard it, and made any issue I haad with EoSD when trying to 1cc it completely worth the effort. It was a song I'd been meaning to cover for a while, and I figured it would be a great way to end the year. As is the trend with most of my EoSD covers, I based it off of the in-game version out of preference, since I felt the in-game pitch was stronger (though the Key of A version is definitely no slouch!), though if you prefer the MIDI pitch, I've included that as well.

As for upcoming videos in 2020, unless something major gets in the way, I will be resuming videos starting on the 24th. Happy New Year, and I'll see you all in the new decade!

While this song did debut in Phantasmagoria in Dim. Dream, this is loosely based off ZUN's SC-8850 and Dolls in Pseudo Paradise arrange. There's actually a story behind this, though! See, one day I was on the road and decided to load up some Touhou music. I played the SC-8850 arrange of Reincarnation, and at some point I thought to myself "Why does this sound like it's using the instruments from Star Fox 1 (except higher quality)?" It bugged me so much that eventually I decided to actually make a SF1-style remix of that song. To make this happen, I finally decided to mess around with samples in AddmusicK and ripped .brr samples from one of the Star Fox .spc files. It's honestly kind of a dumb reason for making this, but it's what I'm sticking with.

Also if you want to put this into Super Mario World via AddmusicK, the samples needed for conversion are in their own folder. I've also included the way I tuned them in case you need them.

Moonsong (and by extension the Outer Wall itself) is arguably the most iconic of all the songs and stages Pixel made for Cave Story, and it's something I knew about even before I tried playing through it this year. It's the kind of song that I could listen to for hours on end. As today is the 15th anniversary of Cave Story's original release I knew I absolutely wanted to do a cover of Moonsong, and since this is the last PC-98 cover I'm doing this year I wanted to do this PMD cover with some of the instruments I'd made for my cover of Mimiga Village for the beginning of this year. It's not really that important, but I figured it'd be neat to see how far I'd come, or something like that.

Also yes, as promised, I did beat Cave Story this year (even if I stalled for a while). I think it's a fantastic game that absoultely deserves to be in the running for best indie game ever made, and while it's clear that the original release was made by one person, it still held up surprisingly well. Wish I could say I was able to beat the most infamous portion in time for this video's release (and I'm still gonna try for it over the course of 2020), but I think I screwed up with my setup somewhere and I keep having to grind out my weapons in order to stand a chance, and that's honestly killing my enjoyment of that one level...

If Snowman was meant to be one of those songs that can get stuck in your head for years on end, it worked because apparently I'm doing this a second time now (third counting my past on YouTube). Since I'm trying to learn MML, however, I figured I'd try doing it in PC-98 this time instead of two variations of Famitracker like before. I also partially based this off of the Earthbound/MOTHER 2 arrangement for once, since I don't think I'd done that before. In any case, see you in 2021 when I inevitably post another Snowman cover!

It's beginning to look just like an Ice World.

The holiday season is finally upon us, and as such the next few videos are mostly gonna be winter or ice themed. I figured I'd start off with one of the snow themes from Super Mario Maker 2, and while I mostly went with SMB3's Snow Theme because I'd already made a level in that style, I actually kinda prefer this out of the new Snow themes. I dunno, I think it just has the right flair of holiday cheer. As with before, if you want to try playing through the level in this video, the ID is CT7-5LW-T3G.

Ever since Nintendo announced they were gonna remake the Famicom Detective Club games (in Japan only, at the time this is going up), I was itching to do an arrangement from those games, and I figured since I was learning MML and PMD, I might as well do one for the PC-98 (which was home to quite a few visual novels). Starting with this cover, I decided to try using macros and transpose commands to make the process slightly smoother. I primarily based this on the SFC version as opposed to the FDS original, partly because it's longer, but mostly because I wanted to try and do this by ear instead of relying on a MIDI or any visual aid.

Also as a reminder, this is the last video I'll be posting until the 6th of next month. I don't think I'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, but I'd rather plan ahead in case something comes up.

Just like old times.

This was the other song I covered around the same time as Selene's Light. It ended up getting done first, but I felt more comfortable posting Selene's Light first as that was something I hadn't covered yet. Just like last time, this was ported using AddmusicK with SMW's default instruments. The one major issue I ran into when writing the MML for this (and am expecting to run into in the future) is with regards to looping - the song kept trying to play one of the melodies in a different key than intended despite not even trying to transpose the song. I think this was because I tried using the labeled loops Wakana outlined in the music porting tutorial but they weren't a good fit for this track. It also doesn't help that the SPC won't play the full song up to that point if all of the notes and rests aren't there. As a result, I had to cheat a little by having the notes leading back into the loop right at the start, but muted until after the loop.

That's not to say I don't think this turned out well. I am very satisfied with the results here, and I'm glad to have revisited this song. Hope you enjoy it!
