Best known for playing the title character in the film Superman (1978) and three sequels.
Born in New York City and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Reeve discovered a passion for acting and theater at the age of nine. He studied at Cornell University and the Juilliard School making his Broadway debut in 1976. After his acclaimed performances in Superman and Superman II, Reeve declined many roles in action movies, choosing instead to work in small films and plays with more complex characters. He later appeared in critically successful films such as The Bostonians (1984), Street Smart (1987), and The Remains of the Day (1993), and in the plays Fifth of July on Broadway and The Aspern Papers in London's West End.

On May 27, 1995, Reeve was paralyzed from the shoulders down after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. He used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life. Reeve returned to creative work, directing In the Gloaming (1997) and acting in the television remake of Rear Window (1998). He also made several appearances in the Superman-themed television series Smallville, and wrote two autobiographical books, Still Me and Nothing Is Impossible. Over the course of his career, Reeve received a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Emmy Award, and a Grammy Award.

Beginning in the 1980s, Reeve was an activist for environmental and human-rights causes and for artistic freedom of expression. After his accident, he lobbied for spinal injury research, including human embryonic stem cell research, and for better insurance coverage for people with disabilities. His advocacy work included leading the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and co-founding the Reeve-Irvine Research Center. Reeve died in 2004.

Previous recipients of Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society include: Jessie Jackson, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Irons, and Seamus Heaney. But it was not until the early 2000s that his career reached even higher heights from his appearances in two blockbuster film franchises: as Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003), and as Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (2002). Born in 1922 in London, England, Christopher Lee is of noble Italian ancestry on his mother's side (Carandini). His mother, Contessa Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano, was a noted Edwardian beauty and was painted by John Lavery, Oswald Birley and Olive Snell and sculpted by Clare Sheridan, a cousin of Winston Churchill. The Carandini family is one of the oldest in Europe and traces itself back to the first century AD. It is believed to have been connected with the Emperor Charlemagne, and as such was granted the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 2009, Lee (89) was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the film and television industries. And this year (2011), he received a BAFTA Fellowship.

The points to take away from this 30 minute talk are that, in the strongest sense of the word cause (as that which is truly responsible for an ultimate outcome), there can only be a single cause for all occurrences. And for it to truly stand as the cause, it must be accompanied by an actual explanation of how it produces its outcome, and not simply be a cause 'in name only,' or what I call a mere 'nominal' cause.

I discuss what we know without any doubt. It comes down to 'things present themselves in the form that they do' or 'experience happens as it does.'

If we presume there is a witness to this experience, we are making the mistake of taking that from the experience itself -- which is in itself unreliable. For the sense of 'me' is something built up over time from experience, and is not known a priori. That things present in the way they do is self-evident and cannot be coherently denied by anyone. Hence it is known beyond all coherent doubt. And, that truth must be coherent, we know from our intuition of non-contradiction. Finally, how we know our innate intuitions have to be right will have to wait for another day -- as it is a deep and powerful subject.

I explain what is meant in philosophy by the "external world" or "external causal objects." Sometimes the wording is "causally responsible external object." "The thing in itself" has also been used. We could also add to the list of references to it "real world," objective world," "outer world," "physical world," and "material world." Kant referred to it (below) as "things outside of us." These are all simply various words to reference to the same concept, a world of objects independent of our experience.

Errata:
At 19:14 I misspelled "conundrum."
At 25:17 I cited the year 1788. 1787 is correct.
At 25:25 I mistakenly said Immanuel Kant spoke of a "controversy" about our knowledge of the external world. I meant to say "scandal," which is what Kant said. The full quote by Kant is: "It still remains a scandal to philosophy . . . that the existence of things outside of us . . . must be accepted merely on faith, and that, if anyone thinks good to doubt their existence, we are unable to counter his doubts by any satisfactory proof" (Kant, Second edition of his Critique of Pure Reason, 1787).

The most notable philosophers who eventually appealed to 'common sense' to defend the existence of the external world were Thomas Reed, Bertrand Russell, and G.E. Moore. Common sense is a very controversial justification, as everyone feels their views are common sense.

In Part 6, I explain why attempts to do away with the theoretical ‘external world’ concept never worked, and by the time processes were being considered in science as a way to replace mere nominal occult causes to explain things, philosophers had built a bulwark around insisting on such an old fashioned method of positing occult causes. It had even become a litmus test for having ‘common sense’ to declare one’s unshakable faith in its existence — preening metaphysical thought from progressing in tandem with the physical sciences. They were discovering evolutionary processes, while philosophers were left behind clinging to their occult theoretical nominal cause. And that is why the ‘mind-body problem’ has appeared intractable.

I explain why the process that I described in the previous talk avoids the problem of falling into solipsism that other theories that attempt to avoid the problematic external world fall into. Solipsism is the unintended consequence of such theories, whereby the world logically winds up being in an individual's own mind, or an expression of his own ego, a wholly subjective experience. Such a solipsistic view is in fact portrayed in the 1999 movie "The Matrix."

Unfortunately, parts of this talk, I realized later, were not very clear. I plan to clarify those parts in a subsequent video. In particular, I don't think my point was clear in cutting up the can of Spam. It is a thought of mine that the notion of an "external world" might be in part based on the fallacy of thinking of our experiences being located "in" our brain, or in the past "in" our mind. I point out that the process model I suggest that our head/brain are in the phenomenal world (since it evolves with it); and the world is thus not in our head. Your head is in the world, the world is not in your head. Perception is something without location, as it precedes the schema of space. It's not a critical point, just a point of interest to me. So I apologize if this left some listeners flummoxed.

"Proof of An External World" (1939), a paper by G. E. Moore in which he admits he cannot actually prove the existence of the external world and likely never will. He winds up holding up his hand to prove the existence of the hidden 'external world,' which only demonstrates the existence of the experiential world, my precise point in this talk series.

There are two main questions materialism cannot answer. One is ontological and has to do with the mathematical laws of physics. The other is epistemological and has to do with our innate intuitions undergirding the laws of logic.

In this video I use the words "material" and "physical" in their colloquial sense. This video was recorded in Myrtle Beach on October 1, 2023.

This video marks the first time I ever tried to explain my idea. Filmed on Community Access Television (CAT) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, about a year after I published my first book "Evolution of Perception & the Cosmology of Substance" (June 2004). The show was called Ozark Live with Maureen Mullen. I was pretty nervous and in hindsight I didn't make a whole lot of sense. This is also the first time I appeared on television discussing an academic subject. I had appeared on TV once before in the capacity of a film producer in 1987 in North Carolina.

I'm not positive of the date of this video, only that it was in 2005. I keep it for posterity. Everything has to begin somewhere.

Philosophers talk a lot about "internal" and "external" experience. They refer continually to the external world or outer world. Some philosophers go further and claim there is no such thing as a private internal world of experience like dreams, thoughts, and memories. See, for example, "Augustine's Invention of the Inner Self" (Oxford University Press 2003). But does such talk of "internal" and "external" perception bring us any closer to explaining our experiential world? In actuality, this strange metaphysical dichotomy of in and out has resulted in numerous paradoxes and conundrums including the infamous mind-body problem. Here we begin to carve a path for a new way of explaining the same distinctions that these terms are meant to account for, without the metaphysical baggage they produce.
