#composition

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this game? Yes, I know that it's actually the fourth installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. But, in 1991, this was the box (or would be, if I kept mine in mint condition), and this was the title I and many in North America came to know and love this amazing game as. It's the first time I came across an RPG with an immersive story, where it wasn't just a backstory, and then you go off and grind, find clues that will get you to the end, and save the princess, or whatever the final goal was. Final Fantasy II (US) gave us some basic background of the characters, but most of the story evolved throughout the game, and would be enriched by the other playable characters, as well as some memorable NPCs that helped you along the way. Sure, there were other RPGs with stories that evolved through the game, but the way it was done was unique to the Final Fantasy series, where you felt you were experiencing a play where you are not sitting in the audience, but part of the cast of characters helping to move things along to the next scene, wondering what new adventure awaits.

As known, the composer for this game, among the majority of Final Fantasy games, is the great Nobuo Uematsu. The sequencing of the MIDI was done by Andrew Thompson, who appears in many old MIDI playlists from the 2000's and earlier, often specializing on sequencing Final Fantasy MIDI music. Much of what I did was go into Cakewalk, update the synths with VST instruments. and expand the brass from just a trumpet to trumpet, French horn, and trombone. Beyond that, I panned and worked out the volume levels to try and balance things out. You can tell me if it all worked out.

You can also hear the SNES OST version here: https://youtu.be/lh5qQxFNzM0

This is one of my personal collection of old MIDIs I found off the old internet between late 90's up to about the mid 2000's. Though it may be possible to find the MIDI I used, or one similar here: https://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/

I remember when this was my 'New Look!' for Ioh. Now, I look at it and I'm like, "Holy sh*t, that was ten years ago?!" Ah, how time flies. Including the fact that the song itself is nearly twenty years old. But, hey, the synths are new. <.<

There was also an extended version, with a drum solo of sorts in the middle. Maybe if I find that, I'll try to remaster it too in Sonar-Artist and upload it here. Until then, enjoy the shorter version! =~.^=

From Chrono Tigger, originally composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu. Frog/Glenn is just a unique character, and working with his theme is fun.

This version is different from the OST justice, but you can compare for yourself: https://youtu.be/mpiAEOB0dhs

Other cool versions, of Frog's Theme and Reprise can be heard from Chrono Trigger: The Musical project here:

Would love to collaborate on something similar some day.

A pre-BandLab Cakewalk version of this piece can be found on my YouTube channel. I may port it over here, but, for now, here's the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gQgAeqdmkg

That was back in 2012 when I was trying to get back into composing MIDI again. Not bad, but maybe nostalgia thinks my better, if not best compositions were back in my high school to college era, between late 90's to early 2000's. But that's just me. Who knows? Maybe I'll have a middle age renaissance. lol

A piece I wrote for my sister in memory of our parents in 2011...

Since our parents are no longer with us, my sister, Janet, asked me to give her away at her wedding. In addition, she asked if I would write something for the dance of the father and bride, which I would dance with her in place of our father. I was honored.

She asked if the music could represent each of our parents. So, here's a little bit from the old country for our father, and a taste of the music our mother enjoyed from this country. I felt it to be appropriate to title this "Kotsirilos", the original spelling of our last name in Greek.

We hope you enjoy this...

Software rendition of my written piece...

A written short composition (of my making) with a sinister beauty to it...

This is a little sloppy still because I just wrote it 3 days ago and it's definitely a work in progress. I haven't written any of it down yet, and when I do it could use some slow practicing.

For now I thought I'd get out an "early" version while it's still fresh.

Also, this is fun as fuck to play.

This was a composition project from a few years back in which I was required to sit at a desk with a blank piece of paper and fill it with music before getting up. It was during a time when I was practicing composing without instruments, just on the page.

Thank you for listening to my music. I am a classical trained composer from Canada. Generally, I write music in the styles of neoclassicism and minimalism but I also experiment with atonal styles. I do not, however, think of myself as a composer of a style. The goal of my music is to create something enjoyable to play, listen to and look at. My main instrument is classical guitar but I can also play piano and violin. I studied composition at Western University in London Ontario. My two most influential teachers were Mark Steiger and David Myska.

I am available for collaboration or commission. Please contact me at [email protected]

Music: original compositions - Max Faust

1 year, 3 months ago

I generally don't like doing back to back updates on the same piece, but it is the main one I've been working on, when I can work on things. As noted, this is a drum and bass version. Started off last night with plucking down the overdrive bass, and, while I liked the throttle of it, it made sense tonight to put it up an octave and to add a sub bass to help it have tone and rumble at the same time.

And yes, I wrote the drums and bass all on Cakewalk using the staff view. It isn't the best notation software out there, but it works well enough. Would like to see some updates to it so that it has more composition tools to work with, but, for some of the more finer tuning, I can always go back to Anvil, or maybe try Sibelius again. Though I might wait until I have enough money to update the laptop. It's getting to that 4 to 5 year mark, and part if the reason I quit using Sibelius was because its updates and general performance was having too many glitches, and I wasn't too happy with Anvil's support or payment system. Sadly, this Toshiba Satellite isn't quite as good as my previous one was, either. Might consider going back to HP. But, we'll see. Just depends on what laptop has the most optimal setup for the things I'd like to do with it.

Beginning of a recent piece. For some reason the Drum cadences come to me first, and then I build up from there. Trying to figure out a bass line and chord progression now.

I'm not sure if I was really inspired by Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, The drum line is pretty thunderous, and industrial, so, something post-apocalypse is bound to come from that.

This is one of my high school era pieces from 1998. Back then, I was into trying to make music for a marching ensemble, as well as the usual pop/techno style that was popular at the time. Though I didn't really see this piece as techno at the time. The signature aspect of this piece is the panning, which the audio recording here doesn't seem to pick up on as well as I'd like it to.

I recorded this piece off my old HP. Composed it on my old IBM around 1999 and was toying with Quick Time's MIDI options. Unfortunately, saved the file wrong and no longer have an actual MIDI file for it. To remaster it, I'd have to transcribe the song, and I don't have the time, nor the patience to do that at the moment. But for a late 1990's synths, they're not too bad. Though had to clean out a few things with Audacity. Unfortunately, some of QuickTime's clipping I couldn't smooth out as well as I would have liked.

***Note:*** I had previously shared a version of this song on December 12th, 2017. That one used VST instruments in the bank of instruments that came with Cakewalk's Sonar music studio. It was also called Glam Rock and can be found here:
https://www.bitchute.com/video/9BBZ522C3ZsC/

Short for General MIDI Rock. It was first composed on my old IBM in 1997.

The SGM soundfont is close to how it would have sounded on the IBM after its upgrade from Window 3.11 to Windows 95, with the addition of the Soundblaster AWE 32 - the first sound card I had that was soundfont capable. The Ken Ardency drum kit is an upgrade on the AWE 32 drums. If you really wanted the old style Sound Blaster AWE drum presets, the Merlin Audigy soundfont is pretty close. Though that one is somewhat of an upgrade of the original AWE soundfonts for the Sound Blaster cards of the early 2000's. But, unless you have an ear for it, you really can't tell that much difference between the AWE series and the Audigy MIDI.

There were probably some technological differences from maybe 16 bit sound to 24 bit, though I'm not sure that there was any change from mono to stereo. I'm not even sure what would be the point, as each individual instrument is going to have sequencer adjustments in panning to give the stereo effect. But the surround and other effects in Audigy sound cards was impressive. Drums, I'm not sure if they were recorded in stereo, or if they did some sort of sequencing in the drum set's programming that creates the effect. As I remember it, the AWE series had a way for MIDI soundfont enthusiasts to play with the soundfont editor to create their own instruments and MIDI bank presets. It seemed at that time that it was possible to pan individual keys associated with a particular wave that is being used to represent the font. I didn't get far enough into it to know whether you could program what changes in velocity can take effect. I think that was something possible, but, again, I never got that technical in the editor. Yet I did use panning with the selected instruments, as well as adjusted them to what I find to be more adequate for recording for today.

The basic theme for the piece. Probably add a second theme, maybe a violin solo, possibly a guitar solo. We'll see. For now, enjoy a taste of what I started composing this past night. 😉

I started this piece back in 2003. Had the initial chord progression on the intro fleshed out. Finally, 16 years later in 2019, I have the rest of the parts in place.Still considering whether to do a solo in the middle or not. But it's pretty decent for now.

This piece is based loosely on material from a previous work. That original composition was my Composer’s Forum debut here at CSUF, and revising it illuminated my growth as a composer. The piece is inspired by the physiological state of the same name; the state of consciousness that comes between sleep and wakefulness. If you have ever found yourself still dreaming while you hear your alarm interrupt, or if crossing over from sleep to being awake is a process for you, then you know what hypnagogia feels like. The music follows the progression of falling asleep, dreaming, and then finally waking up the next morning. There are a few quotes from other tunes embedded in the middle section. If you can identify them, then I owe you a soda.

A jazz tune I made back in college around 2003.The pic is from an old RP at Chamber City in SL. Tending the bar is Amara Parmelee. My character, the leopard skinned fellow, was named Iohannes Crispien, or Ioh (like Yo!, not Lo - the annoying aspect of the capital i looking like the lower cased L >.<).

The first upload was on YouTube back in Mar 9, 2013 on YouTube:

Also known as 'Dungeon', and an update can be heard here: https://www.bitchute.com/video/aNEYMnHVsKvn/

This was either first year of college or senior year high school. A rather atmospheric piece. It's one of my first compositions that I played around with the pan settings which you can tell when the brass comes in.

Another college piece. I had always liked the pastoral and rhapsodic type musical pieces. They just have a certain flow about them. So, in this, I tried to recreate such a feeling and vibe, switching out themes that had been juggling themselves in my mind at the time.

Also, there are meter changes, and the piece is never really in the common. Will leave it to you, the listener to try and guess what meters are used. ;)

I always liked 'Für Elise' (Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor for solo piano). So, one day, just for fun, I decided to try to do a piano piece in the same style as Beethoven's. This was some time in my college days, probably around 2000. The MIDI file has the last modify date at Aug. 8, 2000. It even has the time stamp at 12:56 AM, which doesn't surprise me. Always have been a bit more of a nocturnal sort of creature. ;3
