Colin Flaherty (Author of Don't Make the Black Kids Angry) Commentary News Video "How Ghana made itself the African home for a return of the black diaspora" black mecca black to africa
August 2019 will make it 400 years since the anchoring of an English ship in Jamestown, Virginia carrying a small group of enslaved Africans. While African slaves had been in other parts of the Americas region (including the United States) before 1619, that year is widely regarded as the commencement of the African slave trade to North America.
In all, the Transatlantic slave trade from Africa to the New World lasted four centuries (1444-1888) and involved nearly all the European powers.
When Brazil became the last country to abolish the slave trade in 1888, an estimated 17 million African women and men had been seized from the continent and transported to plantations across the Americas—a conservative figure that UNESCO admits excludes the many who died on the way and were thrown into the high seas. Many of the enslaved Africans came from West Africa and the present-day nation of Ghana was a significant place of origin. To mark the landmark anniversary, Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo in October, declared 2019 as “The Year of Return”, launching a series of programs that would seek to encourage people of African ancestry to make the “birthright journey home for the global African family.” The idea of a homecoming of “our brothers and sisters” who were taken away is one that Ghana has long fancied and championed.
Nkrumah and Ghana made a huge impression on Martin Luther King, which later inspired one of his famous sermons “Birth of a Nation’ upon his return to the US. Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali also made high profile visits to the country years later. The black star on the national flag is inspired by the Black Star Line shipping company founded by pan-Africanist orator Marcus Garvey, which had the grand ambition of facilitating the return of African Americans to the motherland.
Positioning Ghana as the home of global Africa and the place for a spiritual journey of self-discovery has been an idea promoted by governments since Nkrumah. The country has been host to the biennale PANAFEST/Emancipation Day celebration since 1992 and in 2001, the Right of Abode law was passed, giving anybody of African ancestry in the Americas, the right to stay in Ghana indefinitely. On the occasion of Ghana’s 50th independence anniversary in 2007, the Joseph Project was launched to also encourage the descendants of enslaved Africans to return. In December 2016, 34 ‘returnees’ became Ghanaians in a naturalization ceremony attended by then president John Mahama. “I have only restored to you what rightfully belongs to you and was painfully taken away,” president Mahama said after handing out the naturalization certificates.
Kambon, 39, puts Ghana’s hegemony as the home of black people, down to better packaging compared to some of its neighbours. Just like the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Ghana has the infrastructure to back its narrative—by way of the well preserved European slave forts and castles on the coast, where captured women and men were loaded onto ships, never to return home. The visibility of the castles have increased following recent high profile, emotional visits by the Obamas, CNN’s Don Lemon and Colin Kaepernick.
While this is not the first time Ghana is seeking to encourage a return, the rising popularity of ancestry DNA tests coinciding with police brutality and the reawakening of white nationalism have rekindled a desire with some African Americans to more about their roots now more than ever.

In just the last week, at least three teachers at one Middle School have been attacked by their students.
To do that, Ferguson-Florissant district spokesperson Kevin Hampton has helped the district promote a unique online reporting system.
"You can get to it through our app or website and it's a great way for people to share concerns that they have. It's a great way to share information and we receive a lot of information that way and are able to act on it," Hampton said.

At the heart of Howard University's campus you will find a sacred grassy area known as The Yard.
It's a cultural hub for the 152-year-old institution, where students and members of the historical fraternities and sororities congregate.
But students and staff feel some residents in the neighborhood who walk their dogs on the campus aren't respecting the space.
The Yard is more than just a place where students like to hang out. The trees represent an important part of black history and they honor the black sororities and fraternities that do important work for their community.
News4 spoke to a few dog walkers and dog owners who say they’re respectful of the private university. Others see it as an open space and say they don’t see signs preventing them from walking their dogs.
But many students and surrounding homeowners are hoping people think twice before allowing their animals to relieve themselves on The Yard.

All three suspects were found with a pellet gun a few blocks away and arrested. The three have been identified as 21-year-old Ivory Spratt, 20-year-old Kymon Anderson and 19-year-old Zamir Alshabazz.

Mass shooting events in suburban settings such as Parkland, Fla., get a lot of public and political attention. They involve multiple victims shot by the same person at one location — a shattering blow to a single community.
Yet the urban toll of gun violence is much higher — and in Philadelphia, a frequent event. Shootings in the city often take place in different neighborhoods and involve different residents. But for the victims’ communities and the hospitals responsible for treating them, having multiple bullet-ridden patients come to the emergency room all at once from various locations can be as devastating as the more widely reported single-site mass shootings.
A new study from Temple University found that Philadelphia has seen 244 clusters of three or more gunshot patients rushed to a single hospital at once in an 11-year period. On three occasions, six or more patients were brought in as a single cluster.
The study analyzed data from the Philadelphia Police Department on more than 14,000 firearm injuries between 2005 and 2015. Researchers looked at how many patients arrived at the same hospital within 15 minutes of each other — considered a patient cluster.
Seeing clusters of gunshot patients is a near daily occurrence in Philadelphia, said Jessica Beard, a co-author of the study and a trauma surgeon at Temple University Hospital. Doctors call the influx of patients “an everyday mass shooting.”

Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Lewiston man during a brawl last June. The death of 38-year-old Donald Giusti came at a time of rising ethnic tensions in the city and sparked a call for peace by immigrant community leaders.
Authorities say one of the juveniles, a 17-year-old male from Lewiston, was charged with manslaughter. His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. in Lewiston District Court.
Officials say a 13-year-old male from Lewiston was also arrested in connection with the incident, and charged with misdemeanor assault.
Giusti died after being severely beaten during the brawl last summer that Lewiston police estimated to involve as many as two dozen people. Some claimed that racial conflict contributed to the fight, which prompted the city to establish a curfew.

At her birth, her name was Cheri Laverne Dalton. But to the cadre of gun-toting revolutionaries, including Joanne Chesimard, who left a trail of blood across America in the 1970s and to her compatriots more recently in Cuba where she sought refuge, she was Nehanda Abiodun.
She was also still a fugitive from U.S. justice.
On an October day in 1981, Dalton joined a team of operatives from the Black Liberation Army and the Weather Underground in an attempt to steal $1.6 million from a Brink’s armored truck as it parked near the Nanuet Mall. In the ensuing firefight, one of three Brink’s guards was shot to death and another was wounded.
As Dalton and the other robbers tried to escape, another gun fight broke out and two Nyack police officers were killed.
Several years later, Dalton made her way to Cuba where the nation’s communist leader, Fidel Castro, hailed her as a revolutionary and granted her political asylum.

I was made aware that the organizers restricted this event to "Black Media" only. I chose to give my statement as scheduled and afterwards made myself available to the media gathered outside. I have expressed my concerns to the organizers of this event as my history of service in this community has ALWAYS been one of inclusion, of partnership and of communication.
The meeting, publicized as a community meeting to support only one of Savannah’s two African American mayoral candidates, also had the condition that only black members of the media could go inside the church where it was held.

NEW YORK — A 21-year-old man killed in New York City was chased for blocks by a group of at least 10 people who cornered him and gunned him down.
"Ultimately he's cornered, like an animal, in the back of a private residence, where he's shot multiple times," Shea said. "This is eerily similar to last June in the 48th Precinct in the Bronx when Lesandro Guzman was the victim of a mob chasing him through the streets in the Bronx."
The group of men split up. Some chased him on foot and others chased him in a car.
He hid behind a car as the attackers hunted for him. One of the men spotted him and the chase resumed.
One of the men threw a rock at the victim. A man shot the 21-year-old victim five times. The group ran out of the backyard and fled the scene.

When Meredith Watson decided to publicly accuse Virginia’s lieutenant governor of raping her, she knew she would face a backlash — most women who accuse powerful men of sexual assault do.
But she also feared that as a black woman, she would face added scrutiny because the prominent politician she named, Justin E. Fairfax, was African-American, too.
“You’re not supposed to betray your race,” Ms. Watson, 39, said in her first interview since she accused Mr. Fairfax last month of assaulting her when they were in college together at Duke University nearly two decades ago. Mr. Fairfax has denied her allegations.
But black women can face added blowback, including suggestions from other African-Americans that they are being disloyal to their race by calling out prominent men among them.
“As a matter of general principle, no one should challenge the fact that African-American women have been marginalized regarding sexual assault claims,” Mr. Fairfax said in the statement. “Nor should anyone challenge the fact that African-American men have been the targets of false allegations of sexual assault, whoever the accuser. We need a justice system that treats both accusers and the accused fairly and affords both due process.”
Aliyah Young, 17, a black activist in Chicago, often protests police abuse against black people, which factored into her decision not to call out her own attacker, she said.
Yet research suggests that black women may be less likely to report being sexually assaulted to the police because of negative experiences with law enforcement; prosecutors may be less likely to bring charges when sexual assault victims are black in certain situations, and jurors may be less likely to convict, studies https://www.brandeis.edu/projects/fse/slavery/united-states/kennedy.html suggest.

James Sapone, 48, who went by Anthony, was about to go out to dinner with his fiancée, Amy Sprandel, about 9 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of Cherokee Street when they were approached by a man, Sprandel said Wednesday afternoon.

A Cleveland teenager was sentenced Thursday morning on a slew of charges he pleaded guilty to earlier this month, including two counts of attempted murder in connection with a brutal attack on an elderly couple.
Eddie Burns was sentenced to 27 years in prison for the string of robberies and attempted murders. Burns, now 17, took a plea deal March 14, 2019, and pleaded guilty to 10 counts of a 56-count indictment.
The indictments state Burns went on a crime spree from August 10, 2017, to Feb. 7, 2018, leading prosecutor Mike O'Malley to call him an "urban terrorist."
The attempted murder charges involve the beating and subsequent robbery of a 76-year-old Cleveland woman and her 81-year-old husband on March 22, 2018. The husband was hospitalized and died a week later, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Burns was previously charged with the robbery of former Channel 19 reporter Lacey Crisp while she was out on assignment. He was also charged with robbing an Amazon delivery driver and a Spectrum Cable worker, in addition to others.
He has a juvenile record dating back to when he was 13 years old.

Karen Lynch, who is in her 70s, says she was standing outside of her home on Grove Point Dr. feeding the neighborhood cats as she does every morning when a black male suspect approached her with what appeared to be a gun and demanded money. She handed over four dollars, the only cash she had on her.
"I said here's the four dollars, take it and get lost, it's all I have," Lynch recounted on the phone from her hospital bed. "He turned around and walked away so I thought he was gone."
Lynch says she went back to feeding the neighborhood cats. As she continued down the sidewalk, she says the suspect reemerged, presumably thinking she was following him. That when Lynch says the suspect turned around and pointed his gun at her head, threatening to kill her.
Lynch threw the cat food in the suspect's face as self-defense, and batted the gun out of his hand. That's when she says the gun when off, shooting her in the leg. Lynch called 911 and the suspect took off for good this time.
Lynch says the bullet is still lodged in her leg, and she's being monitored in intensive care.

Five junior varsity football players at Damascus High School have been charged with raping four of their fellow male teammates on Halloween.
Sources confirm the five accused players used a wooden broomstick to sodomize the victims. The attacks, which school administrators have called "upsetting and unacceptable," happened following afternoon dismissal in the boy's locker room near the gymnasium. The four victims were picked, in part, based on their age and level of athleticism, sources add.
On Friday, Montgomery County Police charged three of the players with two counts of second-degree rape and two counts of attempted second-degree rape. A fourth player was charged with three counts of second-degree rape. The fifth player was charged with one count of attempted second-degree rape.

The juvenile suspect — also known as the so-called ringleader in the Damascus High School locker room sexual assaults — will be tried as a juvenile due, in large part, to ADHD.
“We believe this mental condition led to this behavior because it went untreated,” Wright opined in court. “There is a treatment model far superior to the punishment model for a 15-year-old child.”
The juvenile suspect was born in South Africa, but came of age in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where, like Wortman, people quickly noticed his abnormal level of agitation and unrest.
In 2014, the juvenile suspect immigrated to the U.S. with his mother and three sisters, now ages 17, 15, and 7, due to “political unrest” in the Congo. They settled in a Clarksburg, Md. townhome. The family is of Christian faith and values education. The suspect's mother is currently taking college courses, while his older sister was recently accepted into Penn State University.
During their multiple counseling sessions, Wortman claimed the suspect was polite, and even opened the door for his mother. He shared a desire to one day attend college and later become a Navy SEAL. He also expressed remorse for his actions.
“He’s very sad about it. He doesn’t understand why he does things,” Wortman testified. “He said he wants to ‘unbreak’ [his mother’s] heart.”
“It began in sixth grade,” said assistant state’s attorney Carlotta Woodward. “Now that it’s escalated to first-degree rape, now they have a problem, they’re saying it’s all because of ADHD.”
Prosecutors reminded the judge that the suspect— who is 6 feet 1 inch tall and 245 pounds — “selected small boys to victimize” and was “laughing” while wielding the wooden broomstick in the freshman locker room on Halloween Day.
“This was a premeditated, planned attack,” Woodward added. “And this wasn’t the first time The evidence shows the defendant was part of a similar attack earlier in the year.”

I’m so scared for my Black students. I can’t speak about any other demographic. I work with Black students every day and I am so scared about what I see. More and more they seem less and less interested in academic endeavors. We talk so much about having more technology in the classroom but today I saw that, even with an engaging web-quest lesson loaded with opportunities to use technology, watch videos, and work at their own pace, there were still those students who just refused to put forth any effort towards learning.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Black teacher but I couldn’t help but notice that it was all Black children who fit that disengaged demeanor. I got so frustrated that I had to ask a colleague to step in my room for me so that I could step out. I needed to release the tears that were welling up in my eyes. My educational philosophy coupled with my real life exposure to the school-to-prison-pipeline has created a hyper-vigilance in me to ensure that my students do their absolute best. I see Black children who aren’t doing what they need to in school and I get scared. It’s not an imagined or far-fetched fear. The fact remains that Black children who don’t do well in school are at greater risk of being further marginalized by society via incarceration and poverty.
Do you know what I see when I look at my Black students who are falling between the cracks? I see kids who are undereducated and over-disciplined. I see kids who are crying out for love and attention. I see kids whose creativity is mistakenly touted as disruption. I see kids who are simultaneously angry and misunderstood with no viable outlet for a positive expression of their angst.

Baltimore is a small town and it is officially divided into nine geographical regions, with over 200 different neighborhoods that are as individual as they are different. I have found that the only way to get a true sense of the lifeblood of this city is to immerse yourself in the different neighborhoods, walk the streets, visit the corner stores, and talk to the people. I would argue that there are two Baltimores, one white and economically advantaged, the other Black and economically challenged—separate and unequal. This system of economic apartheid is like a virus, in that it impacts every aspect of a person’s life from air quality to life expectancy, from clean drinkable water to lack of dependable regular city services, and from literacy rates to murder rates.
We live in the richest state in the country but within Baltimore City, a predominantly Black city, white residents make almost twice as much as Black residents. Unemployment rates for young Black men are three times higher than for young White men and 61% of Black children live in low-income households that have incomes that are less than two times the poverty level. Black Baltimore is struggling. To be clear: life expectancy within Black neighborhoods, like Upton and Druid Heights, where the median income is about $13,388 a year, is only 63 years and the residents have a three times higher rate of dying from heart disease, eight times higher rate of dying from diabetes, 15 times higher rate of dying from homicide, and 20 times higher rate of dying from HIV than in Roland Park, a predominantly white neighborhood, less than five miles away, where the median income is about $90,492 and the life expectancy increases by 20 years. Two Baltimores—separate and unequal.
I asked the students to give me a sense of what they believe is happening at their school and in this community. “White people hate us,” Peyton, an 11th grader, shouted, “because we’re Black and they think we’re poor.” “Facts,” Amir agreed, “They hate us. New York entrepreneur and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang said disaffected members of a “shrinking, insecure white majority” could begin targeting Asians for mass shootings within a generation.
“And who is going to be the boogeyman of the next 10 to 20 years?” Yang rhetorically asked his audience. “Who’s going to be the great rival to the United States in the eyes of American society? China, that’s right. And so, what do you think the attitude is going to be over time for the shrinking, insecure white majority that’s losing their jobs for, let’s say, Chinese Americans or Asian Americans?”
The Venture for America founder made the comments in December 2018 at an event called “A Glance at US Politics from Asian Americans,” hosted by Yuan Media, but is likely making the rounds on Twitter now thanks to the Democratic candidate’s growing name recognition.
Yang recently gained the 65,000 contributions from individual donors necessary to appear in the first Democratic debate, likely thanks in no small part to a February appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast. He is calling for a $12,000 universal basic income (UBI) of $1,000 cash per month for every individual in the United States.

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - When an Atlanta man walked into his house on Arthur Street Friday morning, he was startled when he saw an intruder. Police say that's when the homeowner grabbed his gun.
"He noticed a door was open, a man came out of a room yelling and screaming, the homeowner pulled out his firearm and fired several because he felt like his life was in danger," said Atlanta Police Officer Stephanie Brown.

This video is a compilation of media coverage of the Monday, March 4th, 2019 brutal Robbery that occurred along the 7400 block of Waring Avenue just after 4:00 p.m. In the various stories, one thing stands out — the statement made from our Los Angeles City Council member that crime is down doesn’t match up with neighborhood / merchant sentiment and with official LAPD crime maps and even our own reporting. In fact, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer himself toured the business district on Tuesday, March 12th and told Melrose Action that “there’s been 13 – 13 street robberies recently compared to 4 – 4 a year ago” and we are going to do all we can to stop it (paraphrasing here), a sharp contrast to Council member Koretz statement made outside of Pinks’ Hot Dogs… Years ago, City Attorney Mike Feuer was the past council member for our area.
L.A.P.D. Wilshire Station detectives tell us that the suspects are still at large and the investigation is ongoing. Our L.A.P.D. Senior Lead Officer Ian O’Brien wants the community to know that they have in fact increased patrols in the area and are hyper-focused on crime suppression operations in the area. If you have any information about this crime or other crimes please contact our L.A.P.D. Wilshire Station detectives at (213) 922-8205.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 26th, 2019 at the Blu Jam Cafe located at 7371 Melrose Avenue. Seating is limited, arrive early. Please thank our gracious host and long time community partner Blu Jam Cafe Chef/Owner Kamil Majer for hosting.

JESSUP, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - A man convicted in the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Prince George’s County girl has been released from prison Tuesday after serving less than nine years behind bars.
In 1996, Nia Owens was sexually assaulted and strangled on her way to Northwestern High School in Hyattsville.
After more than a decade, police arrested Matthew Bethea in 2010. He was convicted of second-degree murder, but he got a plea deal, making what’s known as an Alford Plea, where a suspect maintains his or her innocence.
Because of the plea deal, Bethea was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The sexual assault charges were dropped. His sentence was eventually reduced even more for good behavior, and now, he walks away as a free man who doesn’t have to register as a sex offender.
Wood believes her daughter was sexually assaulted by two men. That unknown DNA was put in the national database known as CODIS, but there’s never been a match.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CBS Local) — A Kansas City man assaulted a young woman visiting town for cancer treatment and shot a service dog who tried to intervene in the attack, prosecutor said.
The victim was checking out of a Platte County motel when she, her boyfriend and brother were “jumped by two men and robbed,” according to a GoFundMe https://www.gofundme.com/lolly page set up to raise money for the dog’s veterinary bill. The three victims each suffered numerous injuries.
At some point, the victim’s 3-year-old Border Collie named Lolly attacked Williams and he allegedly shot the service dog, according to a probable cause statement.
Lolly was taken to an area animal hospital, where she had surgery to repair the gunshot wound to her left side and a ruptured spleen. Her intestines had fallen out due to the impact of the bullet, which veterinary staff also repaired. In addition, she had a three-inch laceration to her rear leg.
Mardrecuis D. Williams, 25, was charged with three counts of second-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and one count each of unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree trespass and causing substantial injury to a service dog.
The female victim told police that she suffers from a condition that causes joint pain, dizziness and panic attacks. Lolly helps provide balance during her dizziness episodes and provides comfort during panic attacks, she said.

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — Surveillance video on a Martin County school bus shows a bus aide yelling at a student to take off a "Make America Great Again" cap, then grabbing it off of his head.
According to Gunnar Johansson, 14, students were allowed to wear a hat to school this week if they made a donation to March of Dimes.
He decided to wear a Make America Great Again hat in support of President Donald Trump and “to show my pride in Trump America,” Johansson said.
Within seconds of boarding a bus to Hidden Oaks Middle School, a bus aide told him to remove the hat and put it in his backpack..
“Boy, if you don’t that hat off this bus… take it off,” an unidentified bus aide said, according to surveillance video.
“I was really confused, I was like ‘I can’t wear this?’ “Johansson said. “She, like, threatened me with a referral and threatened to turn the bus around. I said ‘write me up, I didn’t do anything wrong’, and then she yanked my hat off. It was crazy.”
He continued the bus ride without wearing his hat, though other students wearing hats were allowed to keep wearing them.
Johansson’s mother, Jackie Putt said she decided to file a police report after learning she would not be able to see the video of her son until the investigation by the school district is closed.
The school board does not have a policy that prevents students from wearing political attire. Johansson said other students were wearing MAGA hats during the day, and he was allowed to wear it at school.
Putt said she is proud of how her son handled the incident.
“We all have a right to who we want to vote for, this is America,” Putt said.
“Standup for what you believe in,” Johansson said.

Larson was on hand to accept the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film Wednesday night at the Beverly Hilton when she dedicated her speech discussing the recent “Critic’s Choice” study, published by USC Annenberg on Monday. Citing the study, Larson said, “Of the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017, less than a quarter of the critics were white women, less than ten percent were underrepresented men, and only 2.5 percent were women of color.”
“Am I saying I hate white dudes?” the Oscar-winning actress asked repeatedly throughout her speech. “No, I’m not,” she answered.
“I don’t want to hear what a white man has to say about ‘A Wrinkle in Time.’ I want to hear what a woman of color, a biracial woman has to say about the film. I want to hear what teenagers think about the film.”
“If you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color, there is a chance that a woman of color does not have access to review and critique your film,” she said, while revealing plans to roll out an opt-in program that will provide studios with access to underrepresented journalists and critics. “Do not say the talent is not there, because it is.”

Score one for the bigots.
The fact that there’s so much glee about news that the actor Jussie Smollet allegedly lied about a late-night attack by two MAGA-hat wearers last month indicates how racist and homophobic some people are.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter has already tweeted, “Alright, this particular hate crime turned out to be a hoax, but let’s remember, ALL OF THEM are hoaxes. #Smollett.”
The thing is that even if Smollett is found to have lied about what supposedly happened to him during the wee hours of Jan. 29, after leaving a Chicago Subway restaurant, racism remains America’s original sin.
Hate crimes increased substantially after President Donald Trump’s 2016 election. You can’t unsee those disturbing 2017 images of torch-wielding white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man was killed and five other people were wounded in a mass shooting early Wednesday morning after a rap event at a gentlemen's club, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
Just after 2 a.m., according to police, a silver Chevrolet Tahoe riddled with bullets arrived at Memorial Hospital, dropping off six people, including Willie Addison, with gunshot wounds.
Investigators said they learned that the six people in the Taho attended a rap music event at Paradise Gentlemen's Club on Baymeadows Road, between Philips Highway and Interstate 95 in the Deerwood Center area, just prior to the shooting.
Investigators said they believe at least one shooter fired from another vehicle that pulled alongside the Tahoe and that the shooting was a targeted act of violence against the people in the Tahoe.
Surveillance video from nearby Wacko's Gentleman’s Club captured moments right before the shooting. In the video, an SUV drives past on Emerson Street, followed by two more vehicles before witnesses who were outside said they heard gunfire.
According to Florida Department of Corrections records, Addison, who is described in court documents as a certified gang member, was released from prison in June after serving six years in prison for burglary and perjury convictions.
