Two teenagers who police say broke into a west Fort Worth apartment, then fatally shot a mother home caring for her young son, are members of a recently formed gang in the Las Vegas Trail area, police say.

One of the boys told investigators that the pair had broken into the Manitoba apartment of Yesenia Gutierrez on Friday afternoon after peering into a window, seeing a video gaming device, and thinking it would be an easy "lick."

When they kicked open the door, they found Gutierrez, 31, inside.

They demanded her phone — which she gave them — but then shot her in the head before running, according to information released by police Tuesday.

Yesenia Gutierrez's husband had been at work when he received a text from his wife at 11:04 a.m. Friday, asking him to answer his phone.

He tried to help her before grabbing their 3-year-old son to get him out of the apartment. Crying and covered in his wife's blood, he asked a neighbor to call 911.

Pinellas County detectives say that on June 22, a 60-year-old man was standing outside of his apartment on Grove Park Avenue in unincorporated St. Petersburg when he saw two men trespassing and cutting through the apartment complex parking lot. Detectives say the resident yelled at the men and told them to stay off the property.

Detectives say that the two men left the property and returned carrying rocks and a shovel.

Detectives say there was a verbal argument between the 64-year-old resident and the two subjects. During the argument, one of the subjects threw a rock and struck the resident in the head. The man fell to the ground and the subjects fled the scene on foot.

Last week, Saira Rao was running to represent Denver in Congress. This week, she says she’s given up on white people.

The Democrat, the daughter of Indian immigrants, on Thursday retweeted a New York Times column by Emory University professor George Yancy titled “Should I Give Up on White People?” that posted in April.

Rao wrote in her tweet above Yancy’s column, “Short and long answer: YES.”

I spoke with Rao about it Friday morning. After I pointed out that giving up on white people is a bold statement, the former candidate said, “I stand by it.”

Rao told me she had witnessed racism living in Virginia, New York City and Colorado, and they all take the same form, so it’s time for all white people to step up and end it. People of color have tried without success, she said.

“It’s incumbent on white people and not people of color to solve it,” she said in a brief interview, adding it’s the same as it’s incumbent on men to solve misogyny, because women can’t do it alone.

WILLOWBROOK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A video shows a 92-year-old man on the ground with a bloody face after he was attacked by a woman and several men with a brick in Willowbrook.

According to the eyewitness, the man was walking down the sidewalk and he passed the woman. The witness said for some reason that upset the woman and that's when it started.

"The woman pushed him and dropped him. She took the block of concrete and hit him in his head many times. That's why it was very bad," the witness said.

(CNN)A white woman has been fired after video emerged of her confronting and blocking the entry of a black neighbor at a St. Louis apartment complex.

The woman's employer said in a statement that she was fired after a review of the incident, the station reported.

"The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds," the statement said.

The incident occurred in the woman's private residence and not at a Tribeca-STL property, the statement said.

The episode was the latest involving white people who are captured on video either confronting or calling the police on black people going about their everyday lives, including waiting in Starbucks, working as a home inspector, shopping at Nordstrom Rack, sleeping in an Ivy League dorm common room and barbecuing in a public park.
Last week in New York, a white woman in Brooklyn apologized after video was posted online of her appearing to call New York police to say a 9-year-old black boy grabbed her behind.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Two men are charged with tampering with a victim and witness in a St. Louis city murder. Larry Strickland, 31 and Anthony D. Demyers, 33, face the witness intimidation charges in connection with the murder of Gentrail Wafford.

Court documents say that two gunmen identified as Terrance Williams and Brandon Cross shot and killed Gentrail Wafford during a robbery attempt in the 1400 block of Desoto on June 8, 2017. Wafford pulled out his gun to defend Roderick Silinzy, but was killed in the shootout.

Terrance Williams, 29, was charged in July 2017 for Gentrail Wafford's murder. The Circuit Attorney's Office says that investigators started to listen to his jail calls after the death of Roderick Silinzy. He was a cooperating witness in the murder case against Williams. He died from gunshot wounds after his car crashed into an abandoned building in May 2018.

Investigators learned that Williams was relaying the identities of cooperating witnesses in his murder trial to Strickland. They say he got that information through paperwork obtained by his co-defendant Brandon Cross. Strickland and Demyers allegedly worked together to dissuade Silinzy, and the two other witnesses from cooperating in the prosecution of Williams and Cross.

CHICAGO (CBS) — A teenager is recovering after a hammer attack Monday night at a McDonald’s near the Magnificent Mile.

She left in an ambulance, and needed three stitches to close a gash in her forehead.

Jasmine said, around 9:15 p.m., she walked by two women loudly arguing in the McDonald’s, and went to place an order. One of those women confronted the teen, and accused her of cutting the line.

According to Jasmine, the 36-year-old suspect then pulled a hammer out of her purse and several people started yelling. That’s when Jasmine slipped on some water or a piece of paper on the floor.

“I slipped and fell towards her, and she thought I was fixing to fight her and stuff. So once I came towards her, she hit me with the hammer,” Jasmine said. “She was already mad about the other lady. They was just arguing. So I just felt like she really took it out on me.”

Police charged the suspect, Hannah Walker of the 4200 block of West North Avenue, with misdemeanor battery causing bodily harm, on Tuesday.

HASTINGS, Minn. -- A Minnesota man told investigators that a married couple "freaked him out" before running them over in a minivan, just one day after being kicked out of an apartment by his family, according to a criminal complaint Monday charging him with second-degree murder. Prosecutors in Dakota County said 36-year-old Jonna Kojo Armartey fatally struck 58-year-old Diane Peterson and 74-year-old Roger Peterson of the Twin Cities suburb Eagan last Thursday as they were walking near a strip mall.

Police said they found the couple struggling to breathe, and they later died after being taken to the hospital. Medical officials said their wounds were consistent with blunt force trauma, reports CBS affiliate WCCO.

Armartey allegedly told investigators the couple "freaked him out," so he ran over them "going fast and hit them hard," according to the criminal complaint.

Authorities said Armartey and the Petersons did not know each other.

Ryan Schock fears the past is about to rear its ugly head in his town of tiny Leith in south-central North Dakota, and as mayor of the 18 or so people who live there, he wants none of it.

Five years ago Leith made national headlines in The New York Times, USA Today and elsewhere when a man named Craig Cobb began buying up lots around town and inviting fellow white supremacists to move in.

His plan - to turn Leith into a white enclave.

The mayor of a small town in North Dakota is moving to scrap its government over fears that white supremacists are attempting to take it over, one seat at a time.

Ryan Schock, mayor of Leith in south-central North Dakota, has gathered over 12 signatures for a petition that seeks to transfer the town’s governance over to Grant County, reported The Kansas City Star. Approximately 16 people are living in Leith.

Five years ago, Paul Craig Cobb, a prominent white nationalist and white separatist, moved to the small town and began buying houses and land with the intention of creating a white supremacist district, reported The New York Times. Schock tried to stop these attempts in 2013 but was unsuccessful.

Earlier this month, Cobb brought a few white supremacists into town for the city’s elections and managed to win seats on the council with write-in votes, reported The Bismarck Tribune.

“We have to dissolve the town because that idiot [Cobb] showed up," Schock said. “He wanted control of it, and now he can’t have it.”

Schock told KFYR-TV that abolishing the council will not mark the end of Leith. "Leith is always going to be here, the Leith signs are always going to be there,” he said. “It's just not going to have a council and a mayor anymore if this resolution goes through.”

OLINVILLE, the Bronx — A man who allegedly beat a 14-year-old boy on the Bronx River Parkway is in police custody, while cops hunt for several other men other men caught on video kicking, punching and stabbing the teen.

Officers found the teen unconscious and unresponsive after a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. He'd been stabbed repeatedly, police said. The teen was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Donald Giusti, 38, and a father of two, died Friday afternoon at Central Maine Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since late on the night of June 12 when the fight erupted.

O’Malley said it is a complex and unusual case because of the large number of teenagers and juveniles involved. He added that police have been conducting interviews at Lewiston high and middle schools.

“The logistics of interviewing juveniles gets to be complex because you have to find parents and get permission to speak to them,” he said. “I know people want answers quickly. I think perhaps TV has jaded us a bit. It has not been a week yet.”

O’Malley said police have been asked repeatedly about the ethnicity of the people involved, but that he would not release information on suspects’ ethnicities.

Police released sickening video of a man being sucker-punched and left unconscious with a fractured skull in the Bronx — before a group of people pick his pockets and the attacker returns to take pictures of his victim.

Two men are seen walking up to the 37-year-old victim shortly after 6 a.m. June 18 at Aqueduct Avenue and Buchanan Place in University Heights, where one of them punched him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground in the middle of the intersection, police said.

After the two men walk away, several other people gather around the victim and rummage through his pockets, removing his cellphone and identification.

The man who delivered the knockout blow then returns to take a cellphone picture of the man, who is still out cold.

New study confirms atrazine's effects across a range of species

With every passing year the evidence of atrazine's harmful environmental and human health effects grows stronger. Now a new study, summarizing over a decade of research, has further confirmed some truly scary stuff about atrazine, the most commonly detected pesticide contaminant of ground and surface water: atrazine both "demasculinizes" and "feminizes" vertebrate male gonads. (You can read the study here.)

First, you may be wondering, what the heck is the "demasculinization" and "feminization" of male gonads? Put plainly: atrazine shrinks testicles, reduces sperm count, and can even make males grow ovaries. Or, as the authors put it, "demasculization" is a "decrease in male gonadal characteristics including decreases in testicular size, decreases in Sertoli cell number, decreases in sperm production, and decreases in adrogen production." Feminization of gonads is "the development of oocytes in the testes or complete ovarian differentiation in genetic males." Here are some more quick take-aways from this important new study:

First, this is a very robust piece of work, summarizing experimental and epidemiological data going back to 1997. The study boasts an impressive list of twenty-two authors from major research institutions in the United States, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Croatia, Argentina, Brazil, and England. These results thus represent effects "described by independent laboratories in eight different countries on five continents."
Even more impressive, these "effects on the gonads are both specific and consistent and do not occur merely across populations, species or even genera or orders, but across vertebrate classes:" that is, across fish, amphibian, reptile, and mammal species.
How does atrazine cause these reproductive effects? The study concludes that atrazine exposure interferes with and reduces the production of male hormones (androgens) while increasing the effect and production of estrogen (female hormones).
Importantly, the study points out that while changes we can actually observe in the gonads of these animals are concerning, "functional impairments are likely of greatest importance." The study goes on to note that male salmon exposed to atrazine showed decreased mating behavior and milt (sperm) production; that "nearly identical reproductive impairments were observed in amphibians"; that in rodents atrazine exposure "resulted in as much as a 50% decrease in epididymal sperm number and decreased sperm motility";
But wait, there's more: in addition to the effects on gonads, the study also notes that "there are many other documented reproductive effects of atrazine in laboratory rodents: induced abortion, impaired mammary development, the induction of reproductive and hormone-dependent cancers...impaired immune function (also observed in multiple studies across vertebrate classes) and impaired neural development."

Here's the study’s bottom line: "Atrazine" the authors write "is prevalent and persistent in the environment" and "can have dramatic effects on ecosystems, environmental health and public health."

While it would be easy to dismiss this as a problem largely confined to fish, frogs, and rats, atrazine’s impacts hit humans below the belt too. The authors point out that "low fertility, low sperm count, and poor semen quality were also associated with atrazine exposure...in humans living in agricultural areas."

HAWTHORNE, Fla. - Deputies were searching Friday for four young men suspected of being involved in an armed burglary in Hawthorne, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said.

The four suspects, who might be teens, ran off on foot after breaking into a home about 9:20 a.m., deputies said.

One of the suspects, who are all black males, could be wearing a red shirt; one is shirtless; and it is not known what the other two were wearing, deputies said.

The young men are apparently well-armed, but no injuries have been reported and no shots were fired, deputies said. The guns involved in the armed burglary were one long gun and three handguns.

Teen Night Water Park Chaos - Black Violence Crime - 2018 Colin Flaherty reviews and gives commentary on news with headline "Police investigating reports of shots fired, large fights outside Summit Waves water park"

It's the second time police have been called to the water park in the past week for a major disturbance. On June 4, police were called on the report of shots fired at the end of a birthday party. Neighbors told FOX4 they heard multiple shots, but no one was injured.

Witnesses said the park was at capacity, and kids were jumping the fence to get in Monday night.

“After that, it was just shear chaos," said a mother who asked to be identified only as Jenny.

There are reports of lifeguards being assaulted and held under water. There’s also video of a lot of fights going on outside the water park as it closed early for lightning and dozens, maybe hundreds, of teens were left outside unattended.

The robbery spree covered 20 blocks in just over an hour and grew increasingly violent each time a victim was attacked. Now, Miami Beach police have released a video of the last assault in hope that the public might help avert another one.

In three separate instances on Sunday, two men accosted people walking on South Beach. In the first hold-up, the suspects showed the gun. In the second, one of the men pointed it at the victim's stomach. During the third attack, a woman was punched in the head and dragged on the sidewalk.

The third instance happened on Washington Avenue and 16th Street and it was captured on surveillance video. The video shows a man walking along the sidewalk, going out of view, then re-emerging with a woman he's dragging and whose purse he's trying to steal.

TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) - The armed African-American man took the elderly woman's purse and knocked her down, causing injuries.

Police are searching for a suspect they say hit another woman in the face with a metal box.

“Boom! Hits this woman, who’s got glasses on, hits her in the face. And she went down,” witness Carol Martin told CBS2’s Dave Carlin.

Martin said she saw the whole thing. She also said another woman had been clipped by the same box, possibly a make-up kit, a few steps earlier. That victim was overheard saying, “watch where you’re going,” causing the suspect to spew a long, loud string of profanity and hate as she kept walking, Carlin reported.

“She was talking, just talking filthy actually,” said Martin.

Police said the suspect then struck the second victim, shouting “take that you white bitch,” followed by “that’s what you get white bitch.”

A violent attack was caught on camera when a man beat a woman to the ground at a Brookhaven gas station Tuesday. Police said the attack was random.

Moments later, as the woman exited the store, Mansaray attacked her, punching her in the face and choking her neck.

Police said he even tried to burn her with his lighter. The woman eventually was able to fight him off.

Police said a 67-year-old woman was riding a northbound train at about 12 p.m. Thursday. She was reading on her Kindle when a man approached and, completely unprovoked, punched her in the face.

The victim's son told ABC7 Eyewitness News that his mother underwent eye surgery, but is now blind in her left eye. She had never met the suspect.

These are one woman’s thoughts on what happened in downtown Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. She knows not everyone will agree.

Her name is Deanese Williams-Harris and she works on the Tribune’s crime and justice desk. Like everyone else paying attention to Chicago news, she heard about the large groups of young African-Americans who flocked downtown and to North Side beaches for the holiday.

“If nothing else comes out of the story of groups of black young-adults being carted away on trains from the downtown area,” she wrote, “I hope parents and members of the black community will have conversations with our youths about how you should behave in a downtown setting in Chicago…We need to bring back manners.”

Neacy, as she’s known to friends, is 45, African-American and has raised two sons on her own in the South Side neighborhood of Bronzeville, where she grew up. That gives her valuable perspective, which is why I sought her out.

One of the first things she said about the Memorial Day trouble: It was one more sign of the problems rooted in Chicago’s segregation.

“It’s been segregated my whole life,” she said. “When is it going to change? People have been talking about change since the ’60s. The only thing that has changed is the buildings.”

“I think these kids are coming downtown because it’s not safe to be in their neighborhood,” she said. “They have dangers in their neighborhood they think they wouldn’t have to face downtown. Memorial Day weekend, they were venturing to a safe area where they wouldn’t have to worry about being shot.”

They’re also coming, she said, because they’re bored.

“Chicago needs to figure out: Why are our kids so restless? Why are they coming downtown? We don’t have any programs for them in the neighborhoods. So they’re going to venture out and see what else is going on. And you should be able to go downtown and enjoy the day.”

But for a black kid from the West or South side, she said, coming downtown, where most residents and tourists are white, can be fraught. Many come in large groups, she speculates, because they feel safer that way, even though their presence in roaming groups makes other people feel unsafe.

“Seeing a hundred black kids walk down the street, there’s going to be people who are scared. Is that right? Is that fair? No. Should they be scared? No. But that’s the reality.”

“Some of them are quiet and respectful,” she said, “but you have a few who basically behave any kind of way. Instead of getting angry with them, somebody has to step up and tell them, ‘This is how you behave in a public setting.’ ”

“Don’t just say they’re wrong, prove them wrong,” is one of Neacy’s mantras to young people in her community.

At least seven people were killed and 32 others were wounded by gunfire in Chicago over the sweltering Memorial Day weekend as more than 1,000 extra police officers patrolled the streets, beaches and parks.

This year’s Memorial Day weekend was less violent than last year, when 45 people were shot, 7 of them killed, according to data kept by the Tribune. Seventy-one people were shot, six fatally, over the same weekend in 2016 — one of the most violent Memorial Day weekends in years.
