In this video we draw a Borg drone from the Star Trek series using various graded pencils, blender and eraser. All Star Trek fans will know that the Borg are a collective of various humanoids which make up the hive mind. Each humanoid has been stripped of its individuality and belongs to the Borg collective. However, the Borg drone featured in this speed time lapse drawing video seems to have developed what may look like an individual personality and might be expressing its own hostility - perhaps this Borg drone has gone rogue!

I try not to remake old pieces of art too often anymore, but this one really fit the whole winter theme, and allowed me to do things unlike a new piece of art. Though that may be what I do next when I return to this sort of theme. Just with ice, and only ice.

This was my final project for the class Advanced Character Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The goal of the project was to use multiple layers of vellum paper to create a sense of 3-dimentional depth in the overall scene. The story is simple: an animate flower tries to find the perfect vase.

I’m always looking for ways to improve my work and a simple thumb up or down doesn’t tell me specifically what I’m doing right or wrong. So instead, I’d prefer if people leave a comment discussing the video.

SOFTWARE USED: Photoshop CS5 and Corel Painter 12

This video diary series is about keeping creative and getting artwork done! NB: once again, my trusty webcam, or rather, cable management system - has let me down and there is some webcam freeze... oops!

TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Introduction and preamble: Halloween 2020 - why Horror is so much fun as a genre, using Photoshop CS5 (i.e. PSCS5 or CS5), the possibility of finalising touches in Corel Painter 12, how the video structure will work and allowing imagination to help create the final image

04:40 - Rough blue lines: initial layout, discovering the scenario and letting imagination run wild

07:06 - Roughs continued: foreground, mid-ground (i.e. mids) and backgrounds, wanting to get depth in drawings, leading the eye into a central point, telling a story with poses and visuals and... what helps create a "cool" image

12:21 - Line art begins: using techniques that include brush size variance and Wacom tablet pressure for effect

16:44 - Line art: stopping the video and why?

17:02 - Picking up the pace: from where the last video stopped

📓..The sketchbook is a tool with many possibilities, for me its to train model similarity for my oil paintings & sketch before i start a sculpture, and to train my patience. Its also a great tool to get many fast sketches under the belt for evolving, and also to be effective with time.
i will try to find time to do a few sketches a week.

Drawing Epicurus, a philosopher who thought that life was supposed to be a balance between seeking self fulfillment, as well as discipline in order to attain the full perception of what life is. A stoic and one of the key founders of hedonism. Bear in mind when old school hedonism is referred to, it's not it's modern definition of wanton pursuit of lust and greed, but the old school of thought expressed above. Epicurus is also the source of the brilliantly stupid quote which roughly surmounts to, if evil exists, are the gods evil to allow it to exist, or are they just not as omniscient as we believe they are?

Here is a timelapse drawing of an abstract quadrant ballpoint pen doodle. Its fun to just doodle sometimes as a form of meditation to forget the troubles of the world. Once the ballpoint pen drawing was done I added some color in photoshop.

The background music is an improvisation to a drum beat I programmed in Superior Drummer. There are four guitar tracks that make up the composition. There's a lower fuzz style bass track that sounds like a synth. Then there is the main distortion rhythm track. Finally there are a couple lead tracks with delay. All the guitar tracks were recorded on my esp ltd Stephen Carpenter seven string.
