If you've been following our story, you know that we recently received a Startup Business visa, which gives us 6-months of residency to launch a business in Japan. We're starting a small honeybee farm and guesthouse on Ōmishima, one of the islands on the Shimanami Kaido, which is part of Imabari, Ehime.

As part of our business plan, we intend to have a total of 10 honeybee colonies by the end of the Startup visa time period. First, we built 9 Japanese-style beehives (the 10th will be a FlowHive) but we only ordered 1 colony from a Japanese honeybee mail order. We were a bit hesitant to order bees by mail, as our previous experience in the US was to purchase honeybees directly from a local beekeeper. The colony arrived safely, but they had no queen!

This is only a temporary setback for the growth of the colony. But thankfully, they had eggs laid from their previous queen, and were able to make a "queen cell". They made their own baby queen! They do this by feeding the baby bee only royal jelly. We monitored the colony as they created their own replacement queen, and ensured they stayed healthy. So cool!!! In this video, you'll see our hive check to ensure the queen has been successfully born, has gone on her mating flights, and returned to rule the colony. You'll even get to see a glimpse of her majesty!

The day after filming this video, we met with a local beekeeper who has decided to take us under his wing, and offered to sell us "splits" from his colonies. Our new honeybee sensei. This is perfect timing, so we will not have to order the remaining 9 colonies by mail! Everything here on Ōmishima seems so serendipitous.

China should not be allowed to buy Australian or US / Europe / Canada or anywhere else farmland!! Can we buy farms there??? No!!!
