I first tied the Blanton's Whistler (a.k.a. The Flashtail Whistler) way back in 2009 when headed to Canada for some early season Northern Pike fishing. Not only did it catch the pike I found if I got the fly down about 8 to 10 feet I was picking up four and five pound Smallmouth! It has become a staple in my box whenever I am in "big fish" waters. It is a straightforward fly to tie and I am surprised there are not more videos on it. This is the basic version I was introduced to but if you do a search on the Internet you will find other material and color combinations that I think would fish well also. I mentioned in the video an article by Don Blanton (the originator of the pattern) and I have included the link below. - Enjoy

The Myakka Minnow is a fun and quick baitfish imitation that can be created for a vast array of baitfish in both warm and cold waters. It was originally tied for targeting Bass and Panfish on the Myakka River in Florida. There is a link below to the article about the origination of the fly by Steve Gibson. A friend re-introduced me to this pattern this past winter so I thought it would make a good fly for Dressed Irons. Simple in it's make up and very durable, there is no end to the variations to this pattern. It is also a good "beginner" fly as having it perfect does not make it fish any better. Plus, if you have been looking for a fly to learn about epoxy and fly tying here it is. Hard to mess up these flies and in no time you have learned some new skills and have some fun patterns for the next season! - Enjoy
