#growing

Only two days since the replacement seeds were put in water, and one has already sprouted. So looks like I already have an X2021-01 now. I am going to give it a few days for the tap root to grow out a bit more before planting in a cup of dirt. Will revisit on Monday.

Meanwhile, it doesn't look like I had anything to worry about with X2021-00 slipping out of its shell in the water. Now planted, it is surviving, though currently, mostly just stretching and chasing the light. No roots have formed yet of course.

Thanks for looking, and as always, feel free to check out my "sponsor", namely me, and all the neat stuff I have up available on my eCrater, Etsy, and eBid stores.

As of May 8, 2021, all designated sun flower zones are dug up, weeded, and otherwise ready for planting. Plus the west side of the yard is ready to receive grass seed.

There is still quite a bit of ground leveling and smoothing, and even raising that needs done. But no hurry on that. We will do that bit by bit as the sun flowers grow and can withstand a little burying.

Alright, back on the 8th of May, one of the two seeds sent to the germinating cup sprouted. The other has not, and still hasn't at the time I am actually uploading this: 2020-05-12.

Then a couple days ago, I noticed that the one that sprouted also managed to slip out of its shell and has been laying in the bottom of the cup. Though doubtful about whether or not it was salvageable, I went ahead and planted it in a cup of dirt and put it under the light that the avocados and some of the sun flowers are sharing. We will see how it goes (update actually coming shortly after this).

Although I doubt the other is going to sprout, I am keeping it in water for a while longer. I am also starting another two in continuation of this experiment.

And as of now, the one that germinated is now known as Ravenplume Wildling 2019-02 (RPW2019-02) and also Experiment 2021-00 (X2021-00)

So thus far, X2021-00 went from the initial drop into the water on 30-APR to sprouted on 08-MAY, 1 week from start to tap root; not bad, I suppose.

That is it for now. Since it is a day after this one was made, I will be making another update tonight.

West end of the yard is ready for grass. Also, we have even more baby wildling sun flowers coming up; a second Skyscraper and three dwarf sun flowers.

Today, I plan on getting the west facing strip for the Skyscrapers done, then all I have left is spot weeding while my partner here works on prepping the east end of the yard for grass, and we edge in front of the fence.

Got the west side of the yard all cleared and ready for new grass yesterday, as well as ready for the sun flowers that will go around this section of porch. Looks like we do have at least one single wildling among the Skyscrapers we grew against the tall fence last year. Really surprised there are not more. Then again, most were harvested with a large majority of seeds still intact, and plenty served as friend makers for the birds last Fall as well. I am thinking it is time to get some actually germinating inside so they can be planted perhaps late this month or early June. In fact, the next journal entry will involve experimenting with germinating methods.

Last year was our first foray into growing sun flowers. All we did was buy a couple different varieties of seeds at Bi-Mart, and just planted them in the ground out front. Even though we started rather late in the season, we still had excellent results and plenty of seeds.

This year, I am taking this a little more methodically and even somewhat planning out our strategies (just planning in the head, nothing really written down.)

Already, we have some clusters of sun flower wildlings growing out there now, which I am doing my best to keep moist. We also have a dozen in dirt in an egg carton, which we are just keeping out front as well, for natural sunlight. We have one being kept inside at the moment that was germinated in a cup (can't remember if it was in dirt or just in a cup of water). It had a bit of a mishap when it was being transplanted into a larger cup, and almost broke in two. Remarkably, it survived, and is recovering quite well. I think this was one of the Sky Scrapers, so when it is ready to be planted out front, it will go along one of the tall fences, either the one separating the front yard from the back yard, or the fence between us and the neighbors. And we are naming this one, and are hoping to get more seeds off it this year, as its recovery means it likely has some hardiness genetics we want to preserve. This one is now known as Phoenixblume; what with it coming back from the dead like it did.

Lastly, this grow journal is also going to include a time lapse of this section of the yard to show the sun flowers growing up from seedlings to full fledged flowers, to what I call the Winterblumes (just the creepy dead husks of the plants in the Fall, which will then get taken down in the Winter). This little time lapse video will be a single shot per day (which started today). Just not sure how many seconds per frame to do. Will experiment with that as I go along, though thinking perhaps 3 seconds per shot at 30fps.

Here is the start of my first actual wacky weed grow journal for 2021. I mean, I still have the Bitter Sweet Pie plant made from a cutting my neighbor gave me last year hanging in there about ready for planting outside in another 2 or 3 weeks, but I wanted to go ahead and get a couple Ravenplume Wildling 2019 seeds germinating in hopes of being able to use them for figuring out cuttings and sexing (before flowering). Ultimately, I am hoping for these to end up being full fledged siblings, brother and sister, so I can finally have my first baseline strain. Thing is, the 2019 Wildlings have 2 different Tardis mother plants and the same Sour Banana Sherbert Father plant. I just do not know which will be which until they start maturing. So for breeding, they have to be both A plants or both B plants. If I manage that, they will be kept as mother and father plants from which I will make cuttings, while these two remain house plants. If they are both female A or both female B, one will get planted outside and grow up as normal, the other will be the perma mother plant for that line. If they are both Male A or both Male B, then one becomes a house plant, and I rehome the other. If I end up with a single A and a single B, same sex, they both get to be house plants until a full sibling comes along. Meh, sounds like it is getting complicated as I try to explain, so I will stop for now.

For now, let's just get this going and see what we get.

I guess this can be considered a grow journal, only it is not about cannabis (new journal for that coming soon).

For the past 2 to 3 years, we have been playing around with germinating and growing out avocados from pits harvested from fruits purchased at Grocery Outlet. So far, we have had one major success, that is the one downstairs in the kitchen in a nice big planter. It is really having a nice growth spurt this year. Also got a couple others in various stages of development (one from around last Summer, and one that I think germinated back in January.)

Anyhow, now that I have a better inkling of how to do this, I am going to document a plant going all the way from seed to at least what we have downstairs. I do not expect to get any fruit off of these, as I am likely at too high a latitude for that (just about 20 miles south of the northern 45th parallel), so these are going to just be decorative house plants. And hopefully as I get these techniques down, I will be able to start doing more for others, either as No Reason Whatsoever Day gifts (sis in law has been trying to do this for sometime too with no luck, so she has dibs on one upcoming tree) or to even sell off locally.

For now, let's just get this one going and see how it develops.

Late this past Summer, my neighbor gave us a Bitter Sweet Pie clone he had an extra of. We kept her downstairs in the grow room for aabout 3 months perhaps, and sadly kept forgetting about her. When it started getting cold here, we brought her back upstairs and she is staying on my night stand for the Winter, under a good lamp and getting watered and misted daily.

When we brought her up, about the only green remaining on her was one tiny crown up top, and a couple other little ones downstem. However, now it looks like she is on the road to recovery. After a recent watering, we tamped down her starting potting soil and added some really good Black Gold from Sungro. Found a couple sealed 8 quart bags for $2.95 at the Salvation Army recently.

That top crown now has really started to grow out, as are the little ones further down. Not only that, I am seeing green in the stem now, and even some of the leaves that were totally dry and brown are starting to come alive again.

Now I am thinking that if we manage to pull this off and bring her back from the dead, I am going to declare us necroplantsers (and hope that term catches on).

This is really more of a check in than a full fledged update, as right now, I think the only thing to do from here on out is wait until the girls are ready to harvest. They are all covered with sugar right now, but if I understood various sources correctly, that sugar needs to turn to honey, aka go from white to gold. In fact, and someone can correct me if I am wrong here, but I think a good way to remember is "Trichomes white, buzz too light. Trichomes yellow, stone a fellow."

So I am guessing by the end of October, the girls may be ready to start harvesting. I will likely start with Wildfire, since she is the oldest, or at least the one that flowered up soonest. She is small enough, that after leaves and other scrap are removed, all her buds should be able to cure in the actual bud room down in the basement grow facility.

Bessie can also have a spot down there too, with her single but nicely budded stock and ample branches. Tink will do her curing in the downstairs bathroom. It is just being used for storage right now anyway, and it was good enough for last year's Tardis Lite.

I am also wondering if perhaps I should harvest Wildfire and Tink in phases, stretched out over a few weeks, or just get them all at once after I deem them golden enough?

September 30, 2020

Just a little update on how the girls are faring.

Wildfire, despite being such a late arrival and still "adolescent" in size, is proving to be a pretty productive girl regardless. It looks like she will have enough branches hanging to cure when it comes time to harvest, to fill the bud room down in the grow facility in the basement, parhaps with room for an additional branch or two.

That said, Bessie is coming along quite nicely herself. She may be only a tender gal with a single stalk (at least I think only a single), I can tell that what I will get off her is going to be pretty nice.

Now Tinkerbell here, she has had some problems. First, it looks like some naughty boy somewhere in the neighborhood had his way with her, and pollinated a few of her branches. However, I am just going to call this a happy accident. I am sure that just like the Tardis Lite I have been puffing on this year, a lot of which was also pollinated, it will still be suitably potent. And the seeds will be designated as my 2020 Wildlings. And what with their sire being unknown, that makes them different enough from the 2019 Wildlings to where the 2019s and 2020s can be used as subjects for attempts at breeding, with such being documented here as part of a grow journal as well as for my upcoming Noobs Helping Noobs project.

So, here is how my three girls, Tinkerbell, Wildfire, and little Bessie are faring through this really bleeped up Summer.

Tinkerbell is looking like she is going to fill in for the losses of, as a rough guess, Wonder Dog and Marvin, and Wildfire and Bessie together will make up for the loss of the previous Bessie, which got named back to Cratchet after proving to be male.

I am saying screw it on pollinating this time around. I just want to get a decent yield from what we got here. I can get back to being the mad scientist either next season, or this Fall and Winter with indoor grows.

I am still planning on taking a couple cuttings from Wildfire and revegging them after they root. Hopefully I can salvage the buds off of the cuttings and perhaps be able to keep them in water as they continue to mature and then cure. Will be interesting at least to see if they will be usable.

And even though these are all sisters, all from Ravenplume Wildling 2019 seeds, each one will have different one off names for their buds. Tink's will be Pixie Sass-2020, Bessie's will be Bally Ho Delight-2020, and Wildfire's will of course just be Wildfire-2020.

Until next time...

Well, it looks like we are into flowering season, and the three cuttings off Tink are no exception. Thankfully, it appears Tink is a girl after all. Now, her cuttings need to get put back into veg mode, so they are going down to the grow room, and getting put on an 18/6 cycle, joining Pixie Pie down there as post season projects.

And on that note, I suppose it is time to think about processing the pollen sacs from Wonder Dog, which for the time being, will just mean harvesting and letting them dry out so the pollen can be accessed. Hopefully I am not too late to get Wildfire and Bessie pollinated with Wonder Dog's pollen (calling it Operation Red Rocket). If it is too late, then perhaps the pollen saved from an early bird flowerer (flowered in June due to planting too early) will be viable.

Although there is nothing major to report yet, I figure just a quick next day follow up for these would be in order, showing that the cuttings are remaining green while we wait for them to root.

Well, looks like I am starting yet another grow separate from Pixie Pie. I decided that before she flowers, I would get some cuttings from Tinkerbell to hopefully root in this jug of water, then be sent to the grow room to develop and flower. If these root, then they are going to be designated Willowpaw Wildlings 2020 (or 2021 if they don't become harvestable until next year.) I figure my outdoor and indoor growing conditions are significantly different enough that indoor grows should take on a different brand from my outdoors. Thus, anything brought to flower outside are Ravenplume plants, while anything brought to flower indoors are Willowpaw. Heck, even the Ravenplume Wildling 2019 seeds that I plan on growing in the grow room will then get redesignated Willowpaw Wildlings, which will have some interesting implications for future projects.

Anyhow, for the time being, these three cuttings are just being kept out of the way outside in a jug of water. I've been told that althought it may take a little longer than had I used a rooting hormone and put them in starter dirt or whatever, they should still hopefully develop roots this way as well. Names will be announced as they root and get potted downstairs.

Sadly, the third of the Wonder trio of feral wildlings (which I had originally named Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog) is finally no more. The new Wendy, which took the name after the previous Wendy ended up being a Marvin, also ended up being a Marvin. Since I am not going to try to save pollen off this one, he was looking rather sickly anyway, he was just pulled, thrown out, and simply stricken from the record.

So then there were three. All that remains now are Tinkerbell, who I am going to attempt to keep pure just for the best buds I can hope for this year; Wildfire, one of the ferals that was briefly moved inside, then replanted, and the one formerly called Houdini. Since Bessie has been renamed back to Cratchet, after being found to be male, I figured Houdini would take on the Bessie name. She and Wildfire are still scheduled to be pollinated once they flower and I am certain Wonder Dog's pollen is good to go. Granted, I don't know if Bessie will flower or not, but I have a hunch she will have something to present for operation Red Rocket and make seeds.

Finally an update, and not a happy one, I am sorry to say.

Three flowered already, and all three were male. And to add insult to injury, two of those were the top two most promising plants as well, Bessie and Wonder Dog. Wendy was the other one (now renamed Marvin while Marvin is the new Wendy). But she was not as lush as Wonder Dog, but was still coming along fine.

Wonder Dog and Bessie were a major blow though. Hopefully, the pollen sacs from these three that are maturing on their branches in jugs of water will be viable, and can be used to pollenate Wildfire, I am guessing that since Tinkerbell, Wildfire, Wendy, and Houdini still haven't flowered that they may be actual girls, seeing how the boys flowered at around the same time, so perhaps females flower a bit later.

At any rate, it looks like this year's yield will be sadly much smaller than last year's (which I have still not finished processing). Fortunately, that should last well to the end of the year and likely beyond. And if I can avoid heavy pollenization of Tink and Wendy, I should have enough to claim a successful grow and dedicate little Wildfire to being my seed bearer for what should be my first baseline new strain. Just debating whether I should use pollen from only one of her brothers, or all of them, with the branches marked which male fertilized her.

If I don't get viable seeds, then I try again next year. That is all part of the learning process

Still, this is going to mean probably an extra trip to the dispensary. So come help support my vices by shopping on my eCrater stores for various generic stuff at https://secretarybird.ecrater.com and https://ravenplume.ecrater.com

It would be nice to have a bounty so great we can share with others this year.
Actually, we would share even if the bounty isn't great.

I am very disappointed in the tomatoes I grew from seed gathered from the volunteer Steubenville tomatoes back in 2018. The plants were sickly, and none of the plants yielded more than five tomatoes. Many of the tomatoes had bland flavor compared to the parent fruit.
