The recipe I made in the video is from America's Test Kitchen, I have put the whole recipe below in case anyone would like to try it.

RECIPE:
Slow-Cooker Cajun-Style Chicken with Sausage and Corn
Serves 6

INGREDIENTS
12 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (5 to 6 ounces each), trimmed of any yellow or white fat (see note)
Salt and ground black pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more as needed
2 medium onions, chopped medium
6 medium garlic cloves, minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 2 tablespoons)
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced into 1-inch pieces
1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves or 1 teaspoon dried
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 ears corn, husks and silk removed, cut into 2-inch lengths (see note)
¼ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 (12-ounce) jar roasted red pepper, rinsed and cut into 1-inch strips (about 1 1/2 cups)
¼ cup minced fresh parsley leaves

*BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Although we prefer the texture and flavor of chicken thighs here, you can substitute 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts; the cooking time will remain the same, but the meat will be a bit drier. Don’t substitute frozen corn here, as it will have a mushy texture and will add little flavor. Serve this spicy Cajun stew with hot sauce and a crusty loaf of bread or white rice to help sop up the sauce.

1
INSTRUCTIONS
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until just smoking. Brown half of the chicken on both sides, 5 to 8 minutes per side, reducing the heat if the pan begins to scorch. Transfer the chicken to a plate, leaving the fat in the pan. When cool enough to handle, remove the browned skin from the thighs and discard. Transfer the chicken to the slow cooker. Return the pan with the fat to medium-high heat and repeat with the remaining half of the chicken.

2
Pour off all but 1 tablespoon fat from the pan. (Add additional oil to equal 1 tablespoon if needed.) Add the onions and 1/4 teaspoon salt and cook until softened, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the broth, scraping up any browned bits, and bring to a simmer. Pour into the slow cooker.

3
Add the kielbasa, thyme, and cayenne to the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours. Quickly nestle the corn into the slow cooker around the edges, replace the cover, and continue to cook until the chicken is tender, about 1 hour longer.

4
Transfer the chicken to a large serving dish and tent loosely with foil. Set the slow cooker to high. Whisk the remaining 1/2 cup broth and the flour together until smooth, then stir into the slow cooker. Add the roasted red peppers, cover, and continue to cook until the sauce is thickened and no longer tastes of flour, 15 to 30 minutes longer.

5
Stir in the parsley and season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the vegetables, sausage, and some of the sauce over the chicken and serve, passing the remaining sauce separately.

We've got Zinnias highlighting the activities of Sandhill cranes, butterflies, hummingbirds and cats! This is the first year in 48 years I've gone to town with Zinnias because I was not familiar with them until recently. Take a break from the seriousness of life and experience a short 3 minutes of peacefulness that ends with a beautiful sunset. I've found Zinnias are great for attracting pollinators as well as contributing to the beauty of the area and the deer don't eat them. You can't go wrong with Zinnias. Enjoy!

I (Candice~Marie) and Allan define "Toad Choker" and explain why your gardens will love it!

Fence was shorting out at one spot due to uneven ground. It's much easier to find that spot at night.

Due to the goats destroying the old fence, I've upgraded to a PermaNet Plus 12/48/3 which is a bit harder to install but should be more difficult for the goats tear up. Also the old fence would not energize due to damage, and as you can hear in the video this one works just fine. Should only take a couple shocks before the goats learn their lesson.

I irrigated this new chicken run area the week before rotating them here and it seemed to pay off. Unlike the rest of the pasture this area actually has green grass for the birds to eat.

In their never-ending quest to eat the chicken food (which is poisonous to goats btw), the goats are destroying everything.

I started looking up goat recipes after shooting this video.

Original date: 2020-08-11

The goats have settled down into routine where they mostly stick close to the geese.

The geese are starting to turn into front porch animals though, probably because of the shade. I want all that goose manure deposited on the pasture, not on my driveway!

Original date: 2020-07-17

1 month, 1 week ago

I don't know how this happened but the geese have become addicted to drinking from the garden hose. If they hear me using it anywhere in the yard they'll come running over.

Original date: 2020-08-03

1 month, 1 week ago

I found a watering solution that works for both the goats and the geese. Goats obviously have no problem with this and most of the geese don't climb inside to use it as a toilet.

Since a couple of them can and do climb inside though I need to empty this and refill it daily.

Original date: 2020-07-17

Even though both in the this video and the one shot this morning there is plenty of shade in their pen, it looks like half the chicks died from heat exhaustion.

Mostly likely the shade that was present around noon was not sufficient for all the chicks to be out of the sun so only half of them made it.

1 month, 1 week ago

The newest batch of chicks spent their first night outside. They'll separated from the larger birds for another week for safety reasons.

1 month, 1 week ago

Geese aren't big fans of people who are moving around. Once you stand still though they'll come over to say hi.

Original date: 2020-08-03

1 month, 1 week ago

This goose was having trouble walking when I let them in for the evening. The next morning all the geese were fine so I have no idea was going on.

Original date: 2020-07-25

1 month, 1 week ago

These ten chicks will double our flock size. The difference between this batch and the first two is that it's August now so even the nighttime temperature is high enough that no brooder is necessary.

Original date: 2020-08-01

1 month, 1 week ago

I've added another pool since all the geese are old enough to get in and out on their own, but I don't think I'll keep this around very long.

The water really should be changed twice a day, so it's quite labor intensive to keep operating.

Original date: 2020-07-09

1 month, 1 week ago

At night the geese sleep in the chicken run while the chickens sleep in their coop. When morning comes the geese are released to free range and the chickens are released into their run.

The geese are always awake and waiting for me to let them out.

This area is one of their favorite places because it is well shaded.

The grass is already showing signs of overgrazing though so soon I'll need to use temporary fencing to block it off until the grass recovers.

Original date: 2020-06-26

The goslings have grown enough now that the older geese no longer attack them on sight, so it's time to let them free range.

So far so good, but where are the rest of them?

Original date: 2020-06-26

Geese love water and love swimming in it.

Unfortunately though waterfowl don't understand the difference between water to swim in, water to drink, and water to use as a toilet.

Keeping their water clean is an ongoing challenge.

Original date: 2020-06-07

Our existing three French Toulouse geese are joined by six additional French Toulouse goslings and sixteen African goslings, also from Metzer Farms.

The goslings will need to stay separated from the older geese for a few weeks until they get big enough for the geese to recognize them as part of the same flock.

Original date: 2020-06-10

1 month, 1 week ago

According to what I've read by other people with more experience in raising geese, it's a bad idea to overly-tame your geese because it can make them aggressive when they grow up.

Oh well, I guess I'll deal with that in the future if it ever becomes a problem.

Original date: 2020-05-24

1 month, 1 week ago

The chicken coop is getting crowded at night with 10 chickens and three rapidly-growing geese.

This electric netting gives them plenty of room while keeping the predators out.

Original date: 2020-05-24

1 month, 1 week ago

The geese free range during the day but sleep in the chicken coop at night to provide them with better protection from predators.

In fact we've already lost one goose. One of them escaped from their pen at night and made noise that attracted the attention of our weimariner. She's been doing a lot better during the day but the stimulation at night was too much and her instincts took over.

On the other hand the chicken flock has been expanded by four leghorn hens to bring the total number of chickens up to ten so it's not all bad news.

Original date: 2020-05-18

The growth rate of goslings is incredible.

Original date: 2020-05-13

Geese are ready for grazing the same day they are born, and have a much lower need for a brooder than chickens.

Original date: 2020-05-04

Thinning trees generates a lot of brush, so what should I do with it?

The solution I arrived at was to pile it on the banks of a pond and allow it to slowly decompose. After a few years those brush piles should have turned the rocky soil that make up those banks into soil more suitable for growing pasture.

Original date: 2020-04-25

1 month, 1 week ago

My first order of geese have arrived. These birds are French Toulouse geese hatched on April 27th at Metzer Farms and they are huge fans of dandelion leaves.

Original date: 2020-04-29

1 month, 1 week ago

At a week and a half old, the chicks are sturdy enough to leave their brooder and explore the great outdoors for the first time.

It's only been two weeks, so our resident weimaraner still believes she's supposed to hunt these birds.

Original date: 2020-04-14

1 month, 1 week ago

I need to thin the trees in the back of the property to open up some more grazing area, but not too much because the pasture I want to grow will need some shade to make it through the Texas summers.

Original date: 2020-04-04

1 month, 1 week ago

I was lucky enough to stop by a Tractor Supply store that wasn't completely sold out of chick so I picked some up along with minimal supplies to get going.

The dogs are excited about hunting these birds. It will take a while before they learn the difference between livestock and prey.

Have you seen all of those generators out there that bear a very similar appearance to each other? Those are the clones of the bigger more expensive generators (usually last years models) that are mass produced and then sold cheap at the big box stores. In reality most of these are actually very solid generators that can last many years if properly cared for.

Meet our flock of fiber animals and find out why we picked Border Leicesters to start our flock. These sheep are a great multi-purpose breed to add to your homestead and are great for beginners! If you're thinking about adding sheep to your homestead, you should look into Border Leicesters.

If you've watched some of our lamb videos from last spring, you might recognize some familiar characters. Also, see how big the lambs are now!

Just a super short video introducing who I am to the platform.

I have plans to post anywhere from two to five times per week. Topics will be what's going on around the homestead; from making soap to new recipes, cheap and frugal ideas as well as making the next batch of wine, tincture or even my cannabis harvest!

In our 6th Vlog - We build a brooding box / chic house out of old reclaimed materials. We acquired most of the materials from wood from an old shed we tore down, metal from an old trampoline frame, and chicken wire.
We have eggs in our incubator that will be hatching soon.
After they hatch, we will update with a video of this brooding box being put to use.

Warning! (Live birth 0:48-1:25)

Last, but not least! Our ewe, Babe, delivered twins in the middle of the pouring rain. Luckily, it was not a thunderstorm. Babe is notorious on our farm for having issues with lambing and for trying to walk off from her babies. Will she be a good mama this year? Watch to find out and to see the twin babies :)

Our baby chickens aren’t babies anymore! At about a month old, they are more like rambunctious and awkward teenagers. They won’t actually be mature and start laying eggs until they are 5-6 months old (think chicken menses).

Watch to see how they’ve grown and what kind of antics they’ve been up to along the way!

These girls still have a couple of weeks before they go outside into the wide world, but they’re coming along nicely.

We're Mike and Jessie, married for 17 years, two daughters and at a point where we decided that keeping up with the Jones' and running the rat race to get ahead wasn't worth it any more. After getting out of the military, we decided to go back to Square One, in Central Arkansas, where self-sufficiency is the key and going back to our roots is the way we live forward. We weren't raised this way and homesteading doesn't come natural to us any more than it comes natural to others diving off into this journey. So, after you've rendered 1/2 gallon of beef tallow, you might be wondering what to do with it. French fries are definitely not keto friendly (though they are delicious and I won't judge you for having a cheat day and making some homemade sweet potato fries :p). Here are some ideas for you that are keto friendly.

If you missed my tutorial on how to render your own tallow in a slow cooker, check it out here: https://www.bitchute.com/video/luRoXBJOlhMG/
