Iceland's Fagradalshraun Volcano lies quiet for a spell before suddenly spewing red molten lava geysers high into the air, visible from the capital Reykjavik in an awe-inspiring display.
Up until a week ago, the volcanic activity was continuous and low key, but now it is alternating between quiet spells and furious outbursts.
One geyser was measured at more than 460 metres at dawn last Wednesday, according to the national meteorological office.
The powerful bursts throw up rock fragments called tephra, some still hot, that land several hundred metres from the crater, which is located in an uninhabited area on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland.
The eruption, which began on 19 March, is the first on the Reykjanes peninsula in more than eight centuries, and it has been nearly 6,000 years since the last activity at the precise site.
Volcanologists have predicted that the activity will continue for several months - if not decades. But they are certain that the eruption is far from superficial, coming from the Earth's crust.
"This is the most primitive lava that we have seen since the last Ice Age" some 10,000 years ago, said Edward Marshall of the Institute of Earth Sciences.

Much like the United States’ anthem, the Icelandic national anthem was originally written for a particular occasion and it probably did not occur to either the poet or the composer that the song was destined to become a national anthem.
In Iceland, nationwide celebrations were held throughout 1874 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the first Norse settlement of the island. (This is the “Iceland’s thousand years” that are referenced in the anthem.) To mark the occassion, the Bishop of Iceland decreed that church services on August 2 of that year were to be held based on the anniversary, and the text to be presented was Psalm 90. Rev. Matthías Jochumsson then decided to write a poem based on the Biblical text and the millennial anniversary. While abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland, he met up with Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson, who Jochumsson asked to compose music for his poem.
While popular, it was not considered a national anthem. Icelandic independence was still over 40 years away. At the time that “Ó, Guð vors lands” (O, God of Our Land) was written, Icelanders usually sang “Eldgamla Ísafold” by Bjarni Thorarensen as a national anthem. However, that song had anti-Danish (the colonial power) lyrics and was set to the tune of the British national anthem. Therefore “Ó, Guð vors lands” (O, God of Our Land) was played as the national anthem when soverignity was proclaimed in 1918. The anthem has three verses, but the first is usually the one sung.

First my overview - I tried very hard to provide an experience of what I perceived as "in the fashion of how Iceland is meant to be experienced". I did this by many means. How I took my photos, to the music choreography, to motions via panning and selected transitions. This collection of pictures tells the story, not particularly my best photos taken.
I found Icelanders and the land itself has a quietly told and proudly revered history. The land is young, raw and diverse. I brought my love of photography to its rugged and beautiful shores; I left with respect for the people and their country. I tried my best to capture some of ... "what is Iceland".
Please remember that I took these photos under whatever conditions "mother nature" provided. Most were cloudy and many were in the rain. Not to mention we moved 11 out of 14 nights to a different hotel, and all the shots were taken "on the move", in fact... I did not include any photos of Iceland's largest waterfall due to heavy rains that prevented any photos at all.

Album one (1) - The Arrival (approx. run time: 13:30 min., Reykjanes Peninsula - Southwest Iceland)
This was a long day for us. An all night flight, customs in the morning, car rental, many sites while we burn day light until the hotel is available. Sites like ;
o The Reykjanes Peninsula Area - Peninsula on which Keflavik Int. Airport, the capital... Reykjavik sit.
o Hveragerdi - slopes with strange steaming crevasses and yellow sulfur markings.
o Medlina - The Mid-Atlantic Ridge; a Division between the North American Continental Plate and the European Continental Plate (i think).
o Blue Lagoon - Spa heated lakes of water from a geothermal plant (outside shots only).
o Hallfrimsskirkja Church - a modern basalt church, from where (bell tower) I took a few elevated surrounding photos.
o Reykjavik City scenes - the marina, streets, sculptures, Buildings, Homes and lastly... The Fron Hotel (great place – I highly recommend it).

Album two (2) - The "Golden Circle Tour" (approx. run time: 10:36 min., Southwest Iceland also)
Includes a three part tour starting with Geysir, then onto Gullfoss ("golden waterfall") then ending with Pingvellir National Park. Each of these sites was spectacular. This tour is just outside Reykjavik and can be done in a single day (I would not recommend this approach). Pictures of any type don't capture the beauty and respect these sites deserve. Kerid (a volcanic crater) also pictured is a beautiful and haunting site.
o Geysir - is actually the name of their most popular geyser. Many geysers are home here LITLI GEYSIR is just that a little version of Geysir, BLESI is another small geyser I photographed. This area looks prehistoric. The "forces of nature" at work at these sites is astounding. We stayed at the Hotel Geysir. A very nice place. Perfect location to visit both the Geysir & the Gullfoss locations.
o Gullfoss - "Golden Falls" one of Iceland's largest waterfalls saved by an Icelandic female who walked to Iceland's capital to protest the building of a dam. This site is awesome.
o Pingvellir National Park - where early settlers decided to form a commonwealth in AD 930 - this is the site they choose to hold their national assembly.
o Kerid - a 6500 year old volcanic crater.

Album three (3) - Waterfalls of Iceland (approx. run time: 10:42 min.,
Southern Iceland)
This albums theme is Waterfalls. First a few shots on the drive from the town of Selfoss to the town of Skogar of farms, roadside farm animals, and churches to the. The waterfalls (four total) were photographed during this full day journey to Skogafoss.
Not sure of the names of the first and second waterfall, however, the third is Seljalaandsfoss is a narrow but high waterfall, plunging over the mountainside of West Eyjafjoll. A path lies at the bottom of the cliff where it cascades down, offering a safe and easy opportunity to walk behind the waterfall.
The last waterfall Skogafoss, stands a towering 60m tall. Home to the town of Skogar, Skogafoss is one of Iceland's largest and most impressive waterfalls.

Album four (4) - Glaciers of the Southwest (approx. run time: 20:21 min., Southeast Iceland)
This album is all about Glaciers. Not before in show you some cool Sandstone Rock formations, Basalt Rock Formations, Dyrholaey a sheer promontory 120m (photo from a long way away, birds were nesting and it was posted "No Entry"), a stop for some beautiful scenery, The town of Vikurskali, Then Skaftafell National Park. Home of Svartifoss and Vatnajokull glacier.
We travel parts of the park, to a replica of a sod home that overlooks the Vatnajokull glacier flood plain (over 60m by 80m across). Svartifoss waterfall and views of the glacier close up.
We then visit a most beautiful view of the Vatnajokull glaciers flood plain with the glacier as backdrop. We finish with Jokulsarlon, where I photographed the icebergs calving in the bay there. A most stunning site to behold.

This album is large and contains very strange backdrops, diverse scenes, coastlines, deserts, mud pots, volcano cones, steam & sulfur vents. We then drive the desert and drive around Lake Myvatn.
o NAMAFJALL - a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and mud pots.
o HVERIR - slopes with strange steaming pools and yellow sulfur markings and vents.
o KROFLUSTOD - drive by Krafla Power Station (geothermal plant) o Hverarond - famous boiling mud pots & steam vents (one of
Iceland most fascinating and infernal sights (it really does... "send
shivers down one's spine")
o Viti Crater - a colorful explosion crater, about 320 meters wide,
from where I took a few elevated surrounding photos and the
heated pools, sulfur markings and vents.
o Hverfjall - we climb up a 2500 year old crater (tephra ring).
o Dimmuborgir ("black castles") - hauntingly shaped 2000 year old
contorted volcanic pillars.

Album six (6) - The long way home. (approx. run time: 15:07 min., the Snaefellsnes Peninsula - far Southwest)
This album is a very well executed closing to this DVD, a drive of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
o Borgarnes - a quick drive through town and photos of children celebrating the Icelandic Independence.
o Godafoss ("fall of the gods") - a rainy view of a colorful, powerful waterfall.
o Anastadastapi - a small fishing village that lies beneath the Snaefellsjokull glacier with strange coastal rock formations.
o Snaefellsjokull glacier - a drive up Snaefellsjokull Glacier Mountain (where in Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is the subterranean route to the earth's center).
o HINDISVIK - the dedicated coastal farm of a famous naturalist where sea lions & seals can be seen.
o Hvitserkur - legend to be a troll turned to stone by the sun.
o Helgafell ("holy mountain") - this place is mentioned in "The Book
of Settlements" and is considered highly sacred. It was believed
people entered this mountain upon their death.
o Stykkisholms ("Stykkisholmur") - the principal, coastal town of
the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
o Songhellir ("singing cave") - if one listens... it is rumored one can
hear singing (no comment).
o Fjoruhusid - a wonderful cafe near the shore with dramatic costal
cliffs.
o Londrangar - Christian pillar taller (75m) & Heathen pillar shorter
(the book I have saw fit to "not mention" his height - lol).
o Greenland - aerial views over Greenland @ 36K ft.
Iceland is moving to pass legislation to ban circumcisions.
