Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" arranged as a guitar duo, James does the chords, Noel plays the melody. James solos 1st, Noel's solo bats cleanup for the grandslam home run, in a solo with pattern development that results in a good melody. A music solo with pattern development that results in a good melody, is the OPPOSITE of jazz musicians, who play the same patterns for each rhythmic category; 16th notes? they play solo X. Triplets or Sextuplets? jazz musicians play solo Y, and adapt each one to the key of the particular song. Try this experiment: Take a recording of one jazz player's solo on one particular song "LIVE"; then compare it to his or her solo on a different "LIVE" recording - it's the same ideas, patterns, for minutes on end. Jazz musicians don't improvise or create music "on the spot" they just play the same rehearsed riffs over different songs for 5-10 minutes, until the audience is certain that they absolutely hate jazz, for its meandering, vapid, noodling. The small percentage of good jazz musicians stick to the "composition" aspect of a solo, with expenditure & replacement of energy, influencing the melodic contour, the articulation, stress & phrasing influencing the rhythmic grouping. Also for God's sake, GET VOICE LEADING LESSONS from me or AT LEAST JOIN A CHOIR FOR A FEW MONTHS so you learn how to balance the different voices of your arrangement with something better than TWO LOUD OCTAVES played homophonically!

Just jamming to a 6/8 78 bpm drum beat on my Hiren Roy sitar. #sitar

Here is a noodling session on my Weber bandit resonator. I just zoned out and played whatever came to mind on a dadgde tuning. Once you get in the flow of playing your conscious mind kind of disappears and your muscle memory takes over letting you find note combinations that you would never consciously think of. Improvising a great form of meditation to fully distract your conscious mind's noise.

Thanks for listening :-)

Here is another installment of #gibsunday where you play something on a Gibson style guitar on Sunday. I almost missed this one but chopped it out at the last minute.

I kept the beat simple on this one at a standard 4/4 120 bpm with the independent Slingerland kit by Toontrack. Once the drums were in place I played whatever came to mind at the time on my 120 year anniversary Les Paul. This thing is probably one of my fanciest guitars and gets very little play time (I am afraid to ding it accidentally). It has a perfect bookmatched curly maple top in an ocean blue burst color. The controls are pretty unique as well with each knob being a push pull that split the pickups and put them in parallel as well as in a direct signal without any eq. I didn't mess too much with them in this improvisation. Instead I sliced up the wav file and added different effects via Bias fx 2. This plugin is amazing and pretty much blows away all the other software guitar fx I've tried. I added a few clean ambient tones along with a sludgy grunge tone for the heavier chord parts.

Overall it turned out pretty good for a quick jam. I named it Introspection because it kind of reminds me of internal thoughts roiling around when you get some quiet time to yourself.

Thanks for listening :-) #gibsunday

Here is an improvisation for #Gibsunday. I've been posting a lot for #teletuesday and #straturday and my poor Gibsons aren't getting enough play time. Thus #Gibsunday was born lol.

For this improvisation I took my Epiphone Les Paul and played to a simple 4/4 120 bpm beat. The drums are via Superior Drummer's dream pop EZX with some basic electronica drum patterns. The first guitar track acts as the bass and rhythm where I split the signal between an octave effect that dropped the pitch to make it more bass-like. The other part of the track has some basic drive and reverb on it. The lead track is has a chorus, reverb and drive on it via Bias FX 2.

The overall mood came out a bit gothic/post punkish with the electronic drums. Who knows what style it falls under. Thanks for listening :-) #gibsunday

Here is an improvisation on my Takamine classical guitar to a custom 200 bpm drum beat programmed in Superior Drummer 2. I used the vintage custom set with the slingerland kit for the drums. My guitar is tuned to dadgde. Once the drums were in place I just played whatever came to mind on the guitar then adjusted the drums a bit more to add fills here and there to finish the song. Thanks for listening :-)

Here is an improvisation that started on my red stratocaster plus then I started layering in the other tracks over it. My musicman stingray 5 bass was the next layer to go into the mix. With the bass and rhythm track in place I programmed in the drums via Superior Drummer and the Independent EZX. Next I added in a couple of leads on my G&L Comanche and home made partsocaster. I also added a cello track via the Miroslav Philharmonic vst and my You Rock midi guitar All guitar effects are from Bias FX 2 with mastering of the overall composition in Adobe Audition.

Thanks for listening :-) here's hoping spring comes soon, I'm sick of this long winter.

Quick morning jam on a '98 Epiphone Joe Pass from an older instagram video I made about 1 year ago.

Amp: 1982 Roland Cube 60, mic-ed up with a ribbon mic on the center cone and a Shure SM57 off axis.
Pedals: I actually used a Digitech Bad Monkey with the gain set very low, just to add bit of compression to the tone and also a Boss RC-2 loop station

Special thanks to Rhino from Unicorn Music in Freiburg, Germany for hooking me up with this INCREDIBLE instrument.

Improvising guitar melodies and solo licks for a potential tune which may end up as a song with lyrics or an instrumental. One kind of likes the way the Lydian mode plays off the Mixolydian mode over a droning B note which sound and tone can be manipulated with the modal sounds creating perhaps a kind of mysterious landscape. To be continued...

Guitar clips taken and edited from one long improvisational practice session in the dark depths of autumnal Somerset, UK.

Trying to find guitar melodies, licks and ideas via improvisation for a new song called 'Spring Water'. While improvising to tease out ideas, many a bum-note is played and included in this warts n' all video! They say you can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs! Not sure if that is a good analogy or not! Anyway, this is how I would go about finding melodies and ideas to go with a music track.

Bit of a rough, ready and loose guitar improvisation jam. I haven't jammed or improvised for a long time, so thought I'd let loose and blow the cobwebs away. I like improvising with the guitar even though my playing is a bit sloppy in the video. Improvisation is always a great way to find new ideas for songs and solos too! :)

Gear and stuff used: Charvel San Dimas guitar, Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface, BIAS FX 2 Elite guitar effects, EZ Drummer, EZ mix and Reaper.

I'm walking along and I come across a tasty coconut (obviously not real); I try to simply break it, no luck. I try to smash it on the ground; no luck. I miraculously have a hammer and chisel in my pocket; no luck. I try to smash it open with my head, hand, and foot; no luck. I try to smash it with a giant mallet that is laying nearby (the broom); no luck. Lastly, I try something thats not so forceful; I pee on it; unbelievably it opens. At the end, I take a bite from the pee soaked coconut, and walk away with it.
