After a Puerto Rican teen is murdered by three white adolescents, the case comes to Assistant District Attorney Hank Bell (Burt Lancaster). Realizing that he used to date the mother (Shelley Winters) of one of the suspects, he wonders if the boy is his son. Despite Bell's personal involvement, the district attorney (Edward Andrews) keeps him on the case. However, as Bell discovers street gang involvement in the case, he and his wife (Dina Merrill) begin to face physical threats.

Simon Wells, a middle-aged American tourist, is on a boating holiday off the south coast of England. He has recently divorced and left his career as an insurance executive. In Weymouth, he meets 20-year-old Joan, who lures him into a brutal mugging at the hands of King, her brother and his motorbike gang. The next day Joan defies her overprotective brother and joins Simon on his boat.

World War II veteran Richard Dadier (Glenn Ford) takes a teaching position at a rough New York City school for boys. The staff warns him that the students are nearly impossible to control, but the optimistic Richard remains unfazed. Soon, though, he realizes that his class isn't merely rowdy -- they can be downright dangerous. The students, led by the thuggish Artie West (Vic Morrow), threaten their teacher and his family with violence, yet Richard refuses to give up on the troubled teens.
