The German Luftwaffe entered World War II in September 1939, employing as its main day fighter the Messerschmitt Bf-109, one of the classic fighter aircraft designs of all time. When war broke out, it was already riding high on a reputation derived from its successful blooding in the Spanish Civil War. 1941 saw the introduction of the Focke Wolf Fw-109 over the English Channel. Its superiority over the Spitfire Mk. V saw it rapidly become the Luftwaffe fighter arm's 'second iron' and was to play a major role in the widening conflict from 1941 onwards.

Hanna Reitsch, born on March 29, 1912, was a German aviator and one of the most celebrated pilots in National Socialist Germany, testing out dangerous new innovations in aviation. Reitsch was also one of the closest friends of Adolf Hitler during World War 2. She died on August 24, 1979.

Reitsch is the only woman awarded the Iron Cross First Class And the Luftwaffe Pilot / Observer Badge in Gold, with Diamonds during World War II. She set over forty (40) aviation altitude and endurance records during her career, both before and after World War II and achieved a number of international glider-plane records that still stand to this day. A story of human endeavour, the contest between British and German airforces in 1940 which became a defining point of the Second World War. This documentary was released to coincide with the 65th anniversary of one of the most important battles in history. In the summer of 1940, 2936 pilots took part in an historic battle against the German Luftwaffe. The pilots became known as 'The Few': 544 of them lost their lives, many killed in action and others never heard of again, officially listed as missing in action.

Isolated after the defeat of France and the retreat from Dunkirk, Britain's only line of defence against a planned German invasion were the Spitfires and Hurricanes of the RAF. From July to September 1940, the Luftwaffe attempted to shatter the RAF's resolve, launching their last bid to defeat the British pilots on 15th September, when the Germans flew over 1000 sorties in a single day. Defeated in the heavy fighting on that day, the Germans switched their tactics to start the bombing raids against London, and cancelled their invasion plans.

The series contains interviews with the surviving British and German pilots who took part in the conflict, unseen footage from the 1969 'Battle Of Britain' feature film as well as CGI demonstrations and re-enactments. A chronological account of a country preparing to defend itself against a rising empire.
The series also explores the myths that surrounded the campaign giving an objective account of a defining moment in history.

Episode 1: By May 1940, the die was cast and the war started in earnest. This episode examines the build-up to the Battle of Britain, studying the technological advances that the RAF pioneered, to the start of the Battle itself. At the heart of the RAF production were two world-class fighters – the Hurricane & the Spitfire, able to compete against the best that the Luftwaffe had to offer.

As a pilot, the profession brings one above the rest as a matter of course. As a military pilot, flying brings one into danger as a matter of duty. As a man, Hans-Ulrich Rudel rose above all others, certainly in the context of World War II and within the German Military. Flying over 2,000 missions in the Stuka dive bomber and bearing the highest decoration of any soldier, Rudel survived over 30 crashes and was able to take out over 800 enemy vehicles, hundreds of tanks and even a battleship. After the war he was the top candidate for the German Reich Party, and spent much of his time consulting with presidents of South American nations as a military adviser.

The first Me-321 A-1 production aircraft entered service in May 1941 with Grossraumlastensegler 321 at Leipheim, initially towed by Ju 90s and later by the He 111Z and the Troikaschlepp arrangement of three Bf 110s. The later Me-321 B-1 variant had a crew of three and was armed with four 7.92 mm (.312 in) MG 15 machine guns. In spring 1942, the remaining Me-321s were withdrawn from service in Russia in anticipation of the planned Operation Herkules, the invasion of Malta, in which a fleet of the gliders hauled by He 111Zs were to be used. The plan was abandoned due to a lack of towing aircraft.

In 1943, the Me-321s were returned to Russia to be used in a projected operation to relieve General Friedrich Paulus' besieged army at Stalingrad, but by the time they reached the front line, no suitable airfields remained and they were sent back to Germany.

Following the cancellation of the Stalingrad operation, the Me-321 gliders were either mothballed or scrapped, though some were converted into the powered variant, the Me-323 with six 895 kW (1,200 hp) engines. This was the biggest land-based cargo aircraft of World War II. A further proposed operation — in which the remaining Me-321s would have landed troops on Sicily — was also abandoned, due to a lack of suitable landing sites. Ultimately, 200 Me-321s were produced.

The Messerschmitt Me-262 Schwalbe ("Swallow") was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began but engine problems prevented the aircraft from attaining operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. Compared with Allied fighters of its day, including the jet-powered Gloster Meteor, it was much faster and better armed. One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II, the Me-262 was used in a variety of roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance and even experimental night fighter versions. Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made) against the loss of about 100 Me-262s. The Allies countered its potential effectiveness in the air by relentlessly attacking the aircraft on the ground and while they were taking off or landing. Maintenance problems and a lack of fuel during the deteriorating late-war situation also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. In the end, the Me-262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction and the small numbers that were deployed in operational service.

The Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet,[N 1] designed by Alexander Lippisch, was a German rocket-powered fighter aircraft. It is the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to have been operational. Its design was revolutionary, and the Me 163 was capable of performance unrivaled at the time. Messerschmitt test pilot Rudy Opitz in 1944 reached 1,123 km/h (698 mph). Over 300 aircraft were built; however, the Komet proved ineffective as a fighter, having been responsible for the destruction of only about nine Allied aircraft (16 air victories for 10 losses, according to other sources).

The Junkers Ju-88 was a World War II German Luftwaffe twin-engine, multi-role aircraft. Designed by Hugo Junkers' company through the services of two American aviation engineers in the mid-1930s, it suffered from a number of technical problems during the later stages of its development and early operational roles, but became one of the most versatile combat aircraft of the war. Affectionately known as "The Maid of all Work" (a feminine version of "jack of all trades"), the Ju 88 proved to be suited to almost any role. Like a number of other Luftwaffe bombers, it was used successfully as a bomber, dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, heavy fighter, and even as a flying bomb during the closing stages of conflict.

The Junkers Ju-87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a two-man (pilot and rear gunner) German ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, the Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in 1936 as part of the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War.

The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings, fixed spatted undercarriage and its infamous Jericho-Trompete ("Jericho Trumpet") wailing siren, becoming the propaganda symbol of German air power and the blitzkrieg victories of 1939--1942. The Stuka's design included several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high acceleration.

The Junkers Ju-52 (nicknamed Tante Ju ("Auntie Ju") and Iron Annie) was a German trimotor transport aircraft manufactured from 1932 to 1945. It saw both civilian and military service during the 1930s and 1940s. In a civilian role, it flew with over 12 air carriers including Swissair and Deutsche Luft Hansa as an airliner and freight hauler. In a military role, it flew with the Luftwaffe as a troop and cargo transport and briefly as a medium bomber. The Ju 52 continued in postwar service with military and civilian air fleets well into the 1980s.

Often described as a "Wolf in sheep's clothing", it masqueraded as a transport aircraft, but its purpose was to provide the Luftwaffe with a fast medium bomber.

Perhaps the best-recognised German bomber due to the distinctive, extensively glazed, bullet-shaped "greenhouse" nose of later versions, the Heinkel was the most numerous and the primary Luftwaffe bomber during the early stages of World War II. It fared well until the Battle of Britain, when its weak defensive armament, relatively low speed, and poor manoeuvrability were exposed. Nevertheless, it proved capable of sustaining heavy damage and remaining airborne. As the war progressed, the He 111 was used in a variety of roles on every front in the European Theatre. It was used as a strategic bomber during the Battle of Britain, a torpedo bomber during the Battle of the Atlantic, and a medium bomber and a transport aircraft on the Western, Eastern, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and North African Fronts.

Formed in 1935, the German Luftwaffe secretly began designing formidable military aircraft while other countries leisurely explored aviation. the Luftwaffe launched many of the greatest combat aircraft of the era. The Fw 190 was a deadly success. The Me 109 became the German's reliable workhorse. The Me 262 was the only truly successful jet fighter bomber. With these planes, German Aces gave the Allies an awesome challenge in the skies. FW 190 "Butcherbird" - Armed with great speed, climbing ability and agility, it penetrated Allied bomber formations, and forced them to higher altitudes. Many who flew the Fw 190 call it the war's best fighter. Messerschmitt Me 109 "Legend" - The Bf 109, later known as Me 109, is credited for more than half of the German kills in WWII. This successful plane became the backbone of the Luftwaffe. Me 262 "Swallow" - The development of the Me 262 was plagued with controversy and setbacks, but in combat the jet's performance was unequalled. With speeds of almost 550 mph, the Me 262 flew lethal missions over Europe in 1944 and 1945.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109, often called Me-109, was a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the early to mid 1930s. It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, retractable landing gear, and was powered by a liquid-cooled inverted-V12 aero engine.

Die Abwehrerfolge der Deutschen Jagdwaffe und der FLAK, im Bombenkrieg über Deutschland bis Ende 1944, finden selten Erwähnung, da das Ergebnis der in 1945 weitgehend in Trümmern liegenden deutschen Städte so unübersehbar war. Dabei sind diese Zerstörungen zu großen Teilen auf die Bombardierungen von Januar bis zum Mai 1945 zurückzuführen, als die deutsche Luftwaffe nur noch ein Schatten ihrer selbst war, ohne Piloten, Treibstoff und einsatzfähige Flugzeuge.

Dabei überlegten die Amerikaner 1943 ersnthaft die Luftschlacht über Deutschland abzubrechen, da ihre Verluste einfach zu groß waren. In der „Operation Double Strike“ beispielsweise sollten im August 1943 220 viermotorige US-Bomber die deutschen Kugellagerwerke in Schweinfurt ausschalten. 158 Flugzeuge wurde abgeschossen oder beschädigt.

Der als „Roter Baron“ legendär gewordene Manfred von Richthofen kam 1892 in Breslau als Sohn eines preußischen Kavallerieoffiziers zur Welt. Die Familie zog später ins schlesische Schweidnitz. Als ältester Sohn (er hatte eine zwei Jahre früher geborene Schwester) war klar, dass er die Familientradition fortsetzte und auf die Kadettenanstalt ging. 1911 trat der begeisterte Reiter und Jäger ins 1. westpreußische Ulanen-Regiment ein.

Der Rittmeister war ein tatsächlich sauberer Held. Im Gegensatz zum dreckigen Krieg der Materialschlacht galten die Jagdflieger im Ersten Weltkrieg als „Ritter der Lüfte“, die einander ehrenvoll zum Duell stellten und miteinander rangen, bis der Stärkere obsiegte. Auch das war zwar eine Überhöhung, aber immerhin nicht ganz so extrem wie bei Bodensoldaten.
Sein erstes Dreivierteljahr als Jagdflieger verging 1916 weitgehend ereignislos. Immerhin: Der Anfänger Richthofen wurde nicht abgeschossen. Erst als er ins Jagdgeschwader des damals wichtigsten deutschen Fliegerasses Oswald Boelcke versetzt wurde, entfaltete der 24-Jährige sein Talent: Am 17. September 1916 gelang ihm der erste Abschuss.

Zwei Monate später traf er auf den damals bekanntesten britischen Jagdpiloten Lanoe Hawker. Manfred von Richthofen flog eine Albatros D. II, damals das neueste deutsche Modell. Die Maschine war schneller und widerstandsfähiger als Hawkers DH-2. Richthofen verfolgte den Briten 35 Minuten lang. Hawker versuchte, seinen Verfolger durch geschickte Manöver abzuschütteln. Richthofen ließ sich jedoch nicht aus der Ruhe bringen und brachte sich in eine günstige Schussposition. Als die zwei Flugzeuge kurz vor den Gräben der Front waren, konnte Richthofen einige präzise Salven abfeuern; Hawker wurde tödlich getroffen.
Richthofen erwies sich als Naturtalent, vielleicht, weil er als Kavallerist Übung darin hatte, sich bei höherem Tempo zielgerichtet zu bewegen, und hatte außerdem einen ausgeprägten Jagdinstinkt. Nach seinem 18. Luftsieg erhielt er im Januar 1917 die höchste preußische Tapferkeitsauszeichnung, den blauen Orden Pour le Mérite, genannt „Blauer Max“.
Gleichzeitig übernahm er die Führung der bisher erfolglosen Jagdstaffel 11 in Douai. Drei Monate später verzeichnete diese Einheit bereits 125 Abschüsse bei nur zwei eigenen Verlusten. Beim Gegner war diese Staffel gefürchtet; „fliegender Zirkus“ nannte man seine Truppe wegen der farbenfrohen Bemalung ihrer Flugzeuge.

Richthofen selbst stieg vom Albatros D. II auf eine D. V um, die er signalrot anstreichen ließ, weswegen ihn die Briten „Roter Baron“ tauften und die Franzosen „Diable rouge“ (roter Teufel). Anfang September 1917 wechselte er, genesen von einer schweren Verletzung, die ihn kurzzeitig erblinden ließ, erneut – von dem Albatros-Doppel- auf einen wesentlich kleineren Fokker-Dreidecker um.
Der war nur wenig mehr als halb so schwer und deutlich schwächer, erreichte aber eine größere Einsatzhöhe und war unvergleichlich viel wendiger. „Wendig wie die Teufel“ sei die Fokker und könne „klettern wie die Affen“, ließ sich Richthofen, inzwischen ein Medienstar in Deutschland, zitieren.

19 bestätigte Luftsiege errang Manfred von Richthofen auf seiner neuen Maschine, die letzten beiden am 20. April 1918 um 18.40 Uhr und 18.43 Uhr. Am folgenden Tag startete er zum letzten Mal.

Offiziell wurde der prestigeträchtige Abschuss des deutschen Fliegerheroen dem kanadischen Staffelführer Arthur Roy Brown zugerechnet. Es ist jedoch wahrscheinlich, dass einer von drei australischen MG-Schützen am Boden Richthofen im Tiefstflug tödlich getroffen hatte.
Er konnte sein Flugzeug noch notlanden und wurde umgehend zum nächsten Notverbandsplatz gebracht, starb aber an seiner schweren Verletzung. Sein Dreidecker wurde von australischen Soldaten in Souvenirs aufgeteilt; davon existiert ein kurzer Film.

Baron von Richthofen wurde am 22. April 1918 von australischen Soldaten mit allen militärischen Ehren und Salutschüssen beigesetzt.
